In his last two fights, Kamal Shalorus fought as somebody else. It wasn’t him in there, he said, because, mentally, he was in a different place.

The former UFC lightweight hit a skid because of money problems — a lack of money, specifically — and it reflected in his losses to Khabib Nurmagomedov and Rafael dos Anjos.

“I didn’t even try,” Shalorus told GRACIEMAG.com. “I was trying to get out of the cage as soon as I could. I gave up.”

But that was then.

Reinvented, “The Prince of Persia” resolved his financial troubles by moving out of the expensive environment of Southern California and moving to Virginia, where he teaches wrestling and MMA to children at an after-school program. He also found time to get his contractor license, a useful document in his new cash cow of flipping houses.

Both the house-flipping and teaching have paid off in a way that is more than the income they bring him. Like fighting, the new ventures provide him a passion that relieve the stresses of career placement. Being able to teach kids, specifically, is an outstanding feeling, he said.

“It’s amazing. I love it,” he said of his time mentoring and instructing kids from 5 to 12 years of age. “These kids are so powerful and they have great energy. They’re very smart and learning fast. They’re so excited in my wrestling class.”

The children love his class so much, Shalorus explained, that instructors in other classes for different martial arts end up having close to no students because they mostly attend his class.

Tough spot for the new guy  on the coaching staff.

“They hate me,” he said, jokingly, when talking about his relationships with the other coaches. “Some kids are supposed to go to different classes, like karate, yoga, different programs. They don’t show up there; they come to my class. Then other classes are empty.”

The days of money troubles are now behind Shalorus. With the drama in his rearview mirror, the Iranian fighter looks towards a fight at One FC 9: Rise to Power, where he’ll battle Eduard Folayang.

The One FC bout, while not necessarily for the money, will provide Shalorus an opportunity to gain back something he said he lost while in the UFC: His pride.

“I need to get my pride back, brother,” Shalorus said, reflecting on his previous skid. “My pride was taken away. I needed to get it back — I needed a fight. Losing or winning doesn’t matter, but I need to put my 100 percent into a fight to show my skill. I didn’t (do that in the recent fights). That’s why I want to fight.”

The chance of collecting his pride is just over the horizon, as the Folayang fight will take place on Friday, May 31, in the Philippines. It’s a match that Shalorus feels is one he’ll win on the ground. Standing up with Folayang, a fighter Shalorus described as a “tough striker,” isn’t at all in the game plan.

The ground-and-pound, after all, is an art form to Shalorus, and he plans on getting his money, as well as his pride, in the gallery he’ll put on at One FC this Friday.

“Some people are musicians, some are painters, some make nice art. This is my art, this is my passion: Fighting,” he said. “I’m just going to play my symphony, enjoy and fight.”

As GRACIEMAG.com predicted, the South Korean Chang Sun Jung proved the power of his Jiu-Jitsu last night in Fairfax, Virginia, during the main event at UFC on Fuel 3.

The “Korean Zombie” didn’t just do that, he also put on a standup clinic against Dustin Poirier in the octagon. In the second round, Chang slapped on armbars, omoplatas, triangles—all duly defended by his American opponent. But the merit in Jiu-Jitsu comes from being patient and undermining the opponent with double attacks, and the Korean ultimately came up with the finish in the fourth round.

Following a flurry of solid strikes and a big flying knee, the contender for José Aldo’s belt finished up in grand style, sinking a suffocatingly snug arm-triangle.

THE BELLY’S ROLE IN THE MOVE

“He did everything just right. He sunk the triangle and thrust his belly over the opponent’s head,” noted professor of Jiu-Jitsu Elinor Batista, the leader of Garra Fight team. “The American didn’t tap in time and ended up passing out. There really was a lot of pressure behind it.”

The fight and the finish netted “Fight of the Night” and “Submission of the Night” honors for the stalwart Korean. Now “Knockout of the Night” went to Tom Lawlor, who took just 50 seconds in downing the veteran Jason MacDonald.

Como o GRACIEMAG.com havia previsto, o sul-coreano Chang Sun Jung comprovou a força de seu Jiu-Jitsu na noite de ontem, em Fairfax, pelo UFC on Fuel 3.

O “Zumbi Coreano” encarou Dustin Poirier não ficou apenas nisso, e deu uma aula em pé e no chão no Octagon. No segundo assalto, Chang encaixou armlocks, omoplatas e triângulos, todos muito bem defendidos pelo americano. Mas o mérito do Jiu-Jitsu é ter paciência e ir minando o oponente com ataques duplos, e o lutador asiático alcançou a finalização no quarto round.

Depois de acertar bons golpes e uma joelhada voadora, o candidato ao cinturão de José Aldo enfim encerrou a luta, e em grande estilo, com um justíssimo estrangulamento de mão.

O papel do abdome no golpe

“Ele fez tudo certinho. Encaixou o triângulo e jogou o abdome para cima da cabeça do adversário”, reparou o professor de Jiu-Jitsu Elinor Batista, que é líder da equipe cearense Garra Fight. “O americano não bateu e acabou apagando, realmente é muita pressão”.

O combate e seu desfecho valeram o bônus de melhor luta e melhor finalização da noite. Já o nocaute da edição foi para Tom Lawlor, que precisou de parcos 50 segundos para levar o veterano Jason MacDonald à lona.

Tuesday is UFC day. The most famous cage in MMA makes its way to the Patriot Center in Fairfax, Virginia, with a number of promising bouts featuring on the card for UFC on Fuel TV 3. Who’s the biggest star on the card? Probably Jiu-Jitsu.

The 12-fight card is headlined by South Korea’s Chan Sung Jung, the “Korean Zombie,” who will be locking horns with Dustin Poirier. Among the other matchups, there’s Jiu-Jitsu black belt Rafael dos Anjos taking on Kamal Shalorus, and seasoned Nova União/Boxe Thai ace Johnny Eduard facing the plenty experienced Jeff Curran.

On the main card, Donald “Cowboy” Cerrone will do battle with Jeremy Stephens. Both fighters are trying to get back on the winning track, with the former having lost to Nate Diaz at UFC 141 and Stephens losing to Anthony Pettis at UFC 136.

Despite his fearsome reputation as a knockout artist, Cerrone took to the UFC website to demonstrate his favorite move—the triangle, a position that’s yielded the American six of his 17 career wins. “It’s important not to let your opponent posture up,” he teaches.

Terça-feira também é dia de lutas no Ultimate. A gaiola mais famosa do MMA aterrissa hoje no Patriot Center, em Fairfax, nos Estados Unidos, e traz combates promissores pelo UFC on Fuel TV 3. O maior astro do card? Provavelmente o Jiu-Jitsu.

O evento vem com 12 combates, e a fera de chão coreana Chan Sung Jung, o “Zumbi Coreano”, faz a luta principal contra Dustin Poirier. Entre outras feras, o faixa-preta de Jiu-Jitsu Rafael dos Anjos terá Kamal Shalorus pela frente. Já Johnny Eduardo, da Nova União/Boxe Thai, cai para dentro do experiente Jeff Curran.

No card principal, Donald “Cowboy” Cerrone encara Jeremy Stephens. Ambos buscam reencontrar o caminho da vitória, já que o duro vaqueiro foi superado por Nate Diaz no UFC 141, e Stephens perdeu para Anthony Pettis na edição 136.

Apesar de ser um temido nocauteador, Cerrone demonstrou ao site do UFC o seu golpe preferido, o triângulo – posição em que o americano terminou seis das 17 vitórias. “O importante é não deixar o adversário fazer postura”, ensina.

An historic night in Arizona, WEC 53 marked the farewell to the promotion that now folds its roster and weight divisions into the UFC.

The fight that brought the WEC to an end after fifty-three shows could not have been more spectacular. In the lightweight title fight, Ben Henderson started out well against Anthony Pettis and dominated the first round. However, starting in the second the challenger took charge. He brought danger from back mount and landed solid strikes. The fight went back and forth, but Pettis always ended with the advantage. In the final round came the most striking moment. Anthony jumped against the cage and on his return three a spot-on kick to Henderson’s face. A well-deserved win for Pettis, who in the UFC will have a shot at the title against the winner of the fight between Frankie Edgar and Gray Maynard.

The fight between Dominick Cruz and challenger Scott Jorgensen was worth the bantamweight belt, but the UFC’s. The WEC champion dominated five rounds. Throwing all kinds of boxing combinations, Cruz mixed in knees and takedowns as well as defending well when on the receiving end. The new UFC champion holds a record of 17 wins and only one loss.

In the preliminary-card action, two Brazilian up-and-comers in the organization had their day. Renan Barão finished Chris Cariaso with a rear-naked choke in the opening round, notching his second win in the event in two fights. Promotional first-timer Yuri Marajó knocked out Ricardo Lamas also in the firs round. Now both go on to a career in the UFC.

Noite histórica no Arizona, no WEC 53, última edição da organização, que agora cede seu plantel de atletas e categorias para o UFC.

Não poderia ter sido mais espetacular a luta que finalizou o WEC, depois de 53 edições. Na disputa de cinturão de leves, Ben Henderson começou bem contra Anthony Pettis e dominou o primeiro round. No entanto, a partir da segunda parcial o desafiante passou a ser superior. Levou perigo nas costas e conectou bons golpes na trocação. A luta teve muitas reviravoltas, mas Pettis sempre terminava em vantagem. No último assalto o momento mais marcante. Anthony pulou na lateral das grades e, no mesmo impulso, voltou com um chute certeiro no rosto de Henderson. Vitória merecida para Pettis que, no UFC, vai ter a chance de disputar o cinturão contra o vencedor da luta entre Frankie Edgar e Gray Maynard.

A luta entre Dominick Cruz e o desafiante Scott Jorgensen valeu o título de plumas, só que do UFC. O campeão do WEC dominou os cinco rounds. Cheio de esquivas, Cruz variou bem com socos, chutes, joelhadas e quedas, além de se defender muito bem nos poucos momentos de sufoco. Agora, campeão do UFC, mantém o cartel de 17 vitórias e apenas uma derrota. 

Nas primeiras lutas da noite, vitória de duas apostas brasileiras na organização. Renan Barão usou o mata-leão para finalizar Chris Cariaso no assalto inicial e vencer pela segunda vez no evento. Estreante, Yuri Marajó nocauteou Ricardo Lamas, também na primeira parcial. Agora ambos seguem carreira no UFC.

Alan Belcher is getting ready to face Demian Maia at Ultimate Fight Night 22 on September 22. The Jiu-Jitsu black belt knows it will be no walk in the park against Demian on the ground. Thus, he’s repeating the winning formula from his last fight, when he submitted Patrick Cote with a rear-naked choke. Belcher works on his Jiu-Jitsu with Daniel Moraes and this time he’s doing so in Brazil.

Belcher is training at Gracie Ilha academy and the Jardim Guanabara Yacht Club, on the Ilha do Governador island neighborhood in Rio de Janeiro. Our collaborator Diego Marcello caught it all up close. One of the first questions out of the stalwart UFC fighter’s mouth was whether he’d be able to watch the Rio Open tourney that starts this Thursday in the Tijuca Tennis Club.

Another fighter who should show up in Brazil in the coming days is Kamal Shalorus of the WEC. Daniel Moraes will hold a super seminar on July 29 at the Jardim Guanabara Yacht Club, and the fighters will be there.

Aconteceu neste domingo, no Canadá, o WEC 49. Foi a estreia da organização no país. Apesar de ter dado empate na principal luta da noite, o evento contou com boas lutas. 

No combate principal, o ex-campeão Jamie Varner partiu com tudo para cima de Kamal Shalorus. Entretanto, para a surpresa do lutador, ao fim dos três rounds as papeletas anotaram empate. 

E dois atletas da Nova União brilharam no cercado. O primeiro foi Renan Barão, que estreara na organização. No terceiro round, o faixa-marrom de Jiu-Jitsu finalizou Anthony Leone com uma chave de braço. Depois, na mesma categoria de peso (pluma), foi a vez de Wagnney Fabiano ir bem contra Frankie Gomez, em triunfo por decisão unânime. 

A melhor luta da noite foi a vitória de Mark Hominick sobre Yves Jabouin. A melhor finalização foi a guilhotina aplicada por Josh Grispi contra LC Davis. Já o nocaute foi para Eddie Wineland contra Will Campuzano. Cada bônus valeu 10 mil dólares.     

No combate entre brasileiros, Diego Nunes bateu Raphael Assunção por decisão dividida.

O World Extreme Cagefighting (WEC) estreia no Canadá neste domingo, dia 20, e o assinante do Combate confere ao vivo a partir das 22h, somente no canal a la carte da Globosat especializado em lutas. O Rexall Place, em Alberta, receberá um card de peso, com o ex-campeão mundial da categoria peso leve (até 70kg) Jamie Varner recomeçando sua trajetória para uma nova conquista mundial contra o poderoso Kamal Shalorus no evento principal. Nas lutas preliminares, o peso pena (até 66kg) Josh Grispi batalha com LC Davis em uma luta que deixará o vencedor um passo adiante na disputa do título, atualmente com o brasileiro José Aldo. 

Jamie Varner (16-3-2) vem de uma derrota para Ben Henderson, ocasião em que perdeu o título. Ele está motivado em ser novamente campeão do mundo. 

“Estou focado na minha força e condicionamento. Kamal é o adversário mais duro que já ouvi falar”, disse. 

Kamal Shalorus (6-0-1) é novo no WEC, com duas lutas no currículo e ambas com vitória. “Jamie é um grande lutador e estou mais do que pronto para lutar com ele”, afirmou o novato. 

Em outro grande confronto da noite, Josh Grispi (13-1) tem pela frente LC Davis (16-2). Ambos são invictos no WEC, com três lutas cada. Enquanto Davis terminou todas por decisão ao final dos três rounds, Grispi finalizou todas no primeiro round. 

“LC Davis tem uma excelente técnica e é canhoto, o que é muito bom para mim. Mas ele é um cara perigoso, estou ansioso pela competição”, disse Grispi. 

“Josh Grispi é um lutador jovem, agressivo e alto para a categoria”, falou Davis.
