Fabrício Werdum has a date set with Alistair Overeem, a fighter he has beaten in the past, but who is today one of the greatest heavyweights in the world, the champion of both Strikeforce and K-1. And for added confidence at the June 18 Strikeforce GP, the Jiu-Jitsu black belt now has now reached the highest rank in another style as well.

“Everyone says that he (Overeem) has improved a lot since our fight. They say this and that. But I’ve evolved too. I’m improved my ground, my physical conditioning, my striking. I even got a black belt in muay thai from Rafael Cordeiro. So I’m focused on my own potential, I don’t care much what they say,” said the fighter in an interview on the R7 website.

On Strikeforce’s purchase by the UFC, Werdum is fearful the heavyweight GP will end up without a champion.

“Now the UFC bought Strikeforce, I feel it’s unlikely the GP will make it to the final. That’s my opinion, but I feel the UFC won’t invest in a tournament like this that would divide attention with their fighters.”

On the future, the Brazilian aims high: he wants revenge.

“My dream in 2011 is to win the GP and challenge the UFC champion. If it’s Cigano, better still: then we’d have a rematch. It would be a perfect year,” he says.

Fabrício Werdum tem encontro marcado com Alistair Overeem, lutador que já derrotou, mas que hoje é um dos maiores pesos pesados do mundo, campeão do Strikeforce e do K-1. E para o combate no GP do Strikeforce, no dia 18 de junho, o faixa-preta de Jiu-Jitsu agora também conta com a graduação máxima em outra modalidade.

“Muita gente fala que ele (Overeem) melhorou muito desde a nossa luta, que isso e aquilo, mas eu também evoluí. Melhorei meu chão, minha parte física e minha trocação. Inclusive, acabei de ganhar a faixa-preta de muay thai do Rafael Cordeiro. Então, foco no meu potencial, e não ligo muito para o que falam”, fala o lutador em entrevista ao site R7.

Sobre a compra do Strikeforce pelo UFC, Werdum teme que o GP de pesados acabe sem um campeão.

“Depois que o UFC comprou o Strikeforce, eu acho difícil que o GP vá até o fim. É minha opinião, mas creio que o Ultimate não vai investir em um torneio como este para dividir a atenção com os lutadores deles.”

Sobre o futuro, o gaúcho pensa alto. Pensa em revanche.

“Meu sonho para 2011 é vencer o GP e desafiar o campeão do UFC. Se for o Cigano, melhor ainda, daí já fazemos uma revanche. Seria o ano perfeito”,diz.

Current Strikeforce and K-1 World GP champion Alistair Overeem is one of the world’s top fighters these days. The Dutchman’s next challenge is to face off with Fabrício Werdum at the Strikeforce heavyweight GP in June.

Meanwhile, besides his usual fare of grueling training, the Overeem is reaping the rewards of success, in this case meaning a dinner with his country’s royal family.

“A great experience. I had lunch with Prince Willem-Alexander and princess Maxima. It was the most important lunch of my life!” he posted on Twitter.

Do you figure Dilma Rousseff or Barack Obama, the presidents of two of the greatest MMA superpowers in the world – Brazil and the USA, respectively –, may one day hold an audience with their nations’ famous fighters?

Atual campeão do Strikeforce e do K-1 World GP, Alistair Overeem hoje é um dos principais lutadores em todo o mundo. O próximo desafio do holandês é contra Fabrício Werdum, em junho, no grand prix de pesos pesados do Strikeforce.

O holandês Alistair Overeem vem se destacando como um dos grandes pesos pesados da luta mundial. Campeão do Strikeforce, o lutador surpreendeu feras como Peter Aerts para se sagrar campeão do torneio do K-1, o World GP.

A última conquista foi no Dynamite!!, torneio que encerrou a temporada do Dream em 2010, no dia 31 de dezembro. Numa série de dez lutas sem perder, Overeem precisou de apenas 19s para derrubar o ex-UFC Todd Doffee e ficar com o título interino da organização.

Holland’s Alistair Overeem has been on a roll and is in the spotlight as one of the greatest heavyweight fighters in the world. The Strikeforce champion surprised stalwart strikers like Peter Aerts to crown himself K-1 World GP champion.

His last win came at Dynamite!!, the tournament bringing Dream promotion’s 2010 season to a close, on December 31. On a ten-fight winning streak, it took Overeem just nineteen seconds to take out former UFC fighter Todd Duffee and win the organization’s interim belt.
