O MMA feminino continua a crescer e ganhar espaço neste esporte de maioria masculina. Neste ritmo, o Invicta FC, evento exclusivo de mulheres, tem como mais nova contratada a atleta Zoila Frausto Gurgel (12v, 2d).

A competidora assinou contrato no dia 5 de fevereiro e já tem sua primeira adversária definida na organização, a  curitibana finalizadora Jennifer Maia. Elas se enfrentam na próxima edição do Invicta, em abril, sem data confirmada.

“Estamos animados em dar as boas vindas à Zoila, uma estrela deste esporte”, disse a presidente do Invicta, Shannon Knapp. “Ela acumula um ótimo retrospecto e vem crescendo no ranking. Estamos confiantes que a chegada dela vá alavancar ainda mais a imagem do Invicta”, disse.

A atleta de 29 anos é esposa do lutador do Strikeforce Jorge Gurgel, e tem um cartel de seis vitórias e apenas uma derrota. Ex-atleta do Bellator, Zoila foi a primeira campeã peso-palha da história da organização, após quebrar a invencibilidade da japonesa Megumi Fuji, que possuía um cartel de 22-0 até ser derrotada por Zoila, a “Princesa Guerreira”.

Female MMA is gaining ground in what has been a male-dominated playing field.

Keeping up with the pace, Invicta FC, an event exclusively for women, has added Zoila Gurgel (12-2) to its roster.

The competitor signed the contract on Feb. 5 and already knows who her first opponent in the promotion will be: the tapout artist from Curitiba, Brazil, Jennifer Maia. They will face off at an Invicta show in April, the exact date of which has yet to be confirmed.

“We’re excited about having Zoila, a star of this sport,” said Invicta president Shannon Knapp. “She has a great background and has been moving up in the ranks. We’re confident that her arrival will improve Invicta’s image even more.”

The 29-year-old is the wife of MMA veteran Jorge Gurgel. Zoila was the first 115-pound champion of the Bellator promotion, having ended Megumi Fuji’s unbeaten career, which stood at 22-0 until then.

2013 marks the completion of Ronaldo “Jacaré” Souza’s first decade as an MMA fighter, having made a spirited debut back at the inaugural Jungle Fight show, in the Brazilian state of Amazonas. And his 10-year anniversary present couldn’t be more appropriate: a berth in the UFC, the biggest stage in MMA.

On Tuesday evening, UFC Tonight confirmed that “Jacaré” Souza, Roger Gracie, Gegard Mousasi and a list of other Strikeforce hires will be work their trade in the octagon in 2013.

Vacationing in the North Brazilian city of Belém do Pará, Jacaré spoke to GRACIEMAG.com about the UFC and his latest win, when he tapped Ed Herman out via kimura at the Strikeforce finale last Saturday.

“The coolest part about the hold is that any white belt can do it, the only difference being the years of training that went into proper placement and adapting it to my physique,” the two-time absolute champion of the world told GRACIEMAG.com in the following interview.

GRACIEMAG.com: You’re now an experienced fighter who is confident and has a high-level MMA game. Will you nevertheless be feeling tense when you walk out to the octagon?

RONALDO JACARÉ: So far I haven’t felt any tension. Just joy. Being in the world’s biggest MMA event is a major joy. Tension I’ll only feel when I’m about to walk out to fight. The butterflies I feel in my stomach on the way to the cage are the same as I used to feel during my Jiu-Jitsu days. It’s the same feeling. But as I like the adrenaline, I’m stoked!

A decade in the sport, 21 MMA fights, 17 wins and 13 submission—what’s changed in your Jiu-Jitsu since 2003?

It’s changed a lot. It’s not easy to simply transport competition Jiu-Jitsu to the MMA game. And that’s something I learned over time. The guys defend really well, slip away, and sometimes the fight gets tricky. The Gi Jiu-Jitsu game is really different from the Jiu-Jitsu used in MMA. I’m in constant evolution, and the only secret to winning is lots of training.

Where do you feel you stand in the middleweight rankings now you’re in the UFC? On our Facebook page folks are already asking to see you up against the best—Weidman, Anderson…

Whoa, I feel I’m down at the bottom of the division. I just arrived on the scene now, and I have to move up step by step to make it to the top ten in my weight class. I want to carve a place out for myself little by little, and I’ll give my all to do it. I feel I’m going through great evolution and will make it.

Is there anyone in the UFC you’d like to face? Is there anybody in the UFC who inspires you?

I don’t pick opponents. That’s the responsibility of the UFC matchmakers now. I admire fighters who go on the attack. I’m a fan of Minotauro, for example. Regardless of what happens in a fight of his, win or lose, I’m his fan. He’s a martial arts and Jiu-Jitsu icon, and it’s gratifying for us Brazilians to have a guy like that representing us.

You said you wanted to end your tenure at Strikeforce with a finish, and you did. How did that feel?

Mission accomplished, you know? I started my career at Strikeforce with a finish, and Saturday I got a finish. It was an immense joy, since Jiu-Jitsu came in with me and left with me. But still, I haven’t shown all I’ve got yet. I always give it my best; but I still haven’t shown everything I’ve got yet.

What’s the secret to getting a Kimura so tight like you did against Ed Herman?

The coolest part is that the Kimura is a move that I can do and that a white belt can do, too. The only difference being that I practice it, study it every day. Also, everyone is a different size, has different strength. You have to work on it a lot to adapt it to your body. You can compare the way all the Jiu-Jitsu fighters in the world do it, and each fighter may do it slightly differently. And it works for them all.

To wrap up, Jaca, there are already GRACIEMAG readers calling for you to fight Sonnen right off the bat and teach him to speak kindly of Jiu-Jitsu.

O astro do Jiu-Jitsu Ronaldo “Jacaré” Souza celebra em 2013 dez anos exatos como atleta de MMA, desde a estreia cheia de garra no Jungle Fight 1, no Amazonas.

E o presente não podia ser mais apropriado: uma vaga no UFC, o maior evento da modalidade. Na noite dessa terça, o repórter Ariel Helwani confirmou no programa “UFC Tonight” que Jacaré, assim como Roger Gracie, o campeão até 84kg Luke Rockhold, Adriano Martins, Ryan Couture, Nate Marquardt e diversos atletas do Strikeforce vão lutar no octagon em 2013.

Curtindo férias em Belém do Pará, Jacaré falou ao GRACIEMAG.com sobre o UFC e sobre a última vitória, conquistada no dia 12 de janeiro, sobre Ed Herman, com uma kimura ainda no primeiro assalto. “O mais legal do golpe é que qualquer faixa-branca pode aplicar, o único diferencial são os anos de treino para ajustar e adaptar a técnica ao seu físico”, ensinou o bicampeão mundial absoluto (2004/05).

GRACIEMAG.com: Você hoje é um astro experiente, confiante e com um jogo de MMA do mais alto nível. Ainda assim, vai rolar alguma tensão quando você cruzar aquele portão gradeado do octagon?

RONALDO JACARÉ: Por enquanto, não senti tensão alguma. Só felicidade mesmo. Estar lutando no maior evento de MMA do mundo é uma felicidade muito grande. Tensão eu só sinto ali na hora, antes de lutar. O frio na barriga que eu tenho a caminho do cercado é o mesmo dos tempos de Jiu-Jitsu. É o mesmo sentimento. Mas como eu gosto de sentir aquela adrenalina. Fico amarradão!

Uma década no esporte, com 21 lutas de MMA, 17 vitórias e 13 finalizações. O que mudou no seu Jiu-Jitsu de 2003 para cá?

Mudou bastante. É muito complicado simplesmente transportar seu Jiu-Jitsu de competição para o jogo de MMA. E eu aprendi isso ao longo do tempo. Os caras se defendem muito bem, esc0rregam e a luta complica às vezes. É muito diferente o jogo de kimono e o Jiu-Jitsu usado no MMA. A minha evolução continua constante, e o único segredo é muito treino.

Como você se vê na categoria até 84kg, agora no UFC? No nosso Facebook, o povo já quer ver você contra os melhores, Weidman, Anderson…

Calma, eu acho que estou lá embaixo na categoria. Cheguei agora, e tenho de subir degrau por degrau para chegar entre os dez melhores do meu peso. Quero conquistar meu espaço aos poucos, e para isso vou dar o meu máximo. Sinto que estou numa evolução muito grande e vou chegar lá.

Há alguém que você gostaria de enfrentar? Há alguém que seja uma inspiração para você no UFC?

Eu não escolho adversários. Fica na responsabilidade dos matchmakers do UFC agora. Eu admiro os atletas que lutam para frente. Sou fã do Minotauro, por exemplo. Independentemente do que aconteça numa luta, ganhando ou perdendo, sou muito fã dele. Ele é um ícone da luta e do Jiu-Jitsu, e é gratificante para nós brasileiros ter um cara assim nos representando.

Você disse que queria terminar no Strikeforce finalizando e conseguiu. Qual a sensação?

Missão cumprida, né. Entrei no Strikeforce finalizando e sábado saí finalizando. Foi uma alegria imensa, pois o Jiu-Jitsu chegou comigo e eu saí aplicando ele de novo. Mas olha, eu não mostrei tudo que eu tenho ainda. Sempre dou o meu melhor, mas eu ainda não mostrei tudo que eu tenho pra dar, não.

E qual o segredo daquela kimura tão justa que você aplicou no Ed Herman?

O mais legal é que aquela kimura é um golpe que eu posso dar e que o faixa-branca pode dar também. O único diferencial é treiná-lo, estudar a técnica todo dia. Tirando isso, cada um tem um tamanho diferente, uma força diferente. Você tem de treinar sempre, para adaptar a chave ao seu corpo. Você pode comparar a mesma chave com todos os lutadores de Jiu-Jitsu do mundo, e talvez cada lutador faça com um detalhezinho diferente. E para todos funciona.

O faixa-preta de 31 anos, lutador de MMA desde 2006, não deve ter moleza: seu oponente, Anthony Smith, tem oito finalizações em seu cartel no MMA, e ainda oito nocautes, com 17 vitórias e oito derrotas no currículo. Como o gás de Roger vai reagir à pesagem? Como seu Jiu-Jitsu vai funcionar contra um cara experimentado? Veremos sábado.

2. Ronaldo Jacaré vs Ed Herman

Atleta não menos monstruoso na arte suave, Ronaldo Jacaré é bicampeão mundial absoluto de Jiu-Jitsu e venceu 12 de suas 19 lutas por finalização. Praticamente certo no UFC após a renovação para mais cinco lutas em seu contrato com a firma que comanda o Strikeforce e pertence à Zuffa, Jaca tem um bom teste no sábado, contra o ex-UFC Ed Herman – Herman finalizou 13 vezes em suas 28 lutas de MMA. Será que Jacaré vai mostrar mais uma vez para o mundo como anda seu boxe?

3. Daniel Cormier vs Dion Staring

Peso pesado com uma trocação muito justa e poderosa, Daniel Cormier (10v, 0d) é visto como um futuro campeão do UFC. Mas como será seu Jiu-Jitsu? Cormier já finalizou uma vez, em 2010, no sempre usado mata-leão. Quem sabe não tenhamos chances de ver um pouco mais de sua movimentação no chão, nesta luta que promete no último evento do Strikeforce.

4. Jorge Gurgel vs Adriano Martins

O cearense Jorge Gurgel finalizou dez vezes em 14 vitórias, mas não terá moleza desta vez. Adriano Martins é campeão amazonense de Jiu-Jitsu e lutou muitos Mundiais até a faixa-marrom, e ainda tomou gosto pelos nocautes. Quem vence, amigo leitor?

5. Josh Barnett vs Nandor Guelmino

Ex-campeão dos pesados do UFC, Josh Barnett, que figura no card principal do evento, tem 31 vitórias no MMA – 19 por finalização. E ainda tem a marra de ter vencido Rodrigo Minotauro, no Pride. Barnett estava sem perder no MMA desde 2008, até ser superado por Cormier na decisão dos jurados, na disputa do título em maio do ano passado. Já o austríaco Nandor Guelmino, 37 anos, já finalizou seis vezes no MMA, sempre com um golpe novo. Será um rival à altura de Barnett?

6. Nate Marquardt vs Tarec Saffiedine

A luta principal do Strikeforce traz o ex-UFC Nate Marquardt, que tem 44 lutas de MMA na carreira e bateu apenas duas vezes: para Genki Sudo e Ricardo Cachorrão, quase uma década atrás. Nate já venceu muita gente boa do Jiu-Jitsu, anulando Demian Maia, Rousimar Toquinho, Dean Lister e outros. Contra ele veremos Tarec Saffiedine, belga de 26 anos que contabilizou três vitórias consecutivas no Strikeforce, mas contra oponentes ainda sem tanto nome.

We at GRACIEMAG.com, who besides MMA have Jiu-Jitsu running in our veins, put together a list of the six fights that get our engines running most of the 12 on the program for tomorrow’s event in Oklahoma, USA. Check our favorite match-ups in no particular order, and comment whether you agree:

1. Roger Gracie vs. Anthony Smith

A ten-time Jiu-Jitsu world champion, the first and only three-time winner of the World Championship absolute division and with four submission wins in MMA to his name, Roger is carrying big expectations into this event. If he wins with authority, the son of Professor Maurição Gomes and Reila Gracie will, as he himself says, have one foot in the UFC’s door. The 31-year-old black belt, who’s been doing MMA since 2006, has his work cut out for him: his opponent, Anthony Smith, has eight submission wins and another eight knockout wins on his 17-fight MMA ledger. How will Roger’s gas tank react to making weight? Will his Jiu-Jitsu work against such an experienced adversary? We’ll find out on Saturday.

2. Ronaldo Jacaré vs. Ed Herman

A no less monstrous gentle-art representative, Ronaldo Jacaré is a two-time champion of the world absolute division and has won 12 of his 19 fights by submission. He’s pretty much guaranteed to ply his trade in the UFC, now that he’s renewed his contract for another five fights with Strikeforce’s parent company, which is owned by Zuffa. And he’ll have a good test ahead of him on Saturday, when he faces former UFC fighter Ed Herman—Herman has 13 submission wins on his 28-fight MMA record. Will Jacaré try showing off how his boxing is coming again?

3. Daniel Cormier vs. Dion Staring

A heavyweight with crisp and potent striking, Daniel Cormier (10w, 0l) is already  being touted as a future UFC champion. But how’s his Jiu-Jitsu? Cormier has one submission win to his name–a rear-naked choke he used back in 2010. Could we get another glimpse of how he moves on the ground?

4. Jorge Gurgel vs. Adriano Martins

Jorge Gurgel has gotten the tapout in ten of his 14 wins, but he’ll have his work cut out for him this time. Adriano Martins is a Jiu-Jitsu champion from the Brazilian State of Amazonas and has been in his fair share of World Championships up to when he was a brown belt, and now he’s got a penchant for knockouts. Who’ve you got winning it, gentle reader?

5. Josh Barnett vs. Nandor Guelmino

A onetime champion of the UFC heavyweight division, Josh Barnett has a whopping 31 wins in MMA—19 of them by submission. And he’s even got a win over Rodrigo Minotauro under his belt, from when they squared off at the now-defunct Pride FC. Barnett hadn’t lost in MMA since 2008 before losing a judges’ decision to Cormier in a title fight in May of last year. Nandor Guelmino, 37, has gotten the tapout in MMA on six occasions, each with a different hold. Could he be on par with the likes of Barnett?

6. Nate Marquardt vs. Tarec Saffiedine

The Strikeforce main event features former UFC star Nate Marquardt, who in his 44-fight MMA career has only tapped out twice: to Genkie Sudo and Ricardo Cachorrão nearly a decade ago. Nate’s victims include a Who’s Who of Jiu-Jitsu aces, like Demian Maia, Rousimar Palhares, Dean Lister and others. He’ll be taking on the 26-year-old Tarec Saffiedine, who is riding a three-fight winning streak in Strikeforce, but against smaller-name opposition.

After a marathon ten-hour flight, Adriano Martins touched down in Oklahoma City, where he’ll be fighting Jorge Gurgel this Saturday at the Jan. 12 Strikeforce show. Upon arrival, a happy surprise: Martins was designated by Ronaldo “Jacaré” Souza as a training partner.

Martins, a Jiu-Jitsu champion and savvy knockout artist, said he’s not going to change his style any for the fight—he wants to keep on the feet.

Após uma maratona de dez horas de vôo, Adriano Martins chegou à cidade de Oklahoma, onde fará sua luta contra o compatriota Jorge Gurgel no Strikeforce, sábado, 12 de janeiro. Ao chegar, uma feliz surpresa: Adriano foi designado a treinar com Ronaldo Jacaré.

O atleta, campeão de Jiu-Jitsu e nocauteador, disse que não vai mudar seu estilo de luta, quer a briga em pé. Para ele, seu maior desafio no momento é a balança, onde precisa diminuir mais cinco quilos para bater o peso da categoria dos leves.

O card do próximo Strikeforce, no próximo dia 29, está recheado de candidatos à finalização mais bonita da noite.

Na luta principal, Gilbert Melendez representa o Jiu-Jitsu ensinado por seu professor Cesar Gracie. Na luta feminina, Cat Zingano disputa com Amanda Nunes quem tem mais chão, força e técnica.

Nas demais lutas, só fera: Guto Inocente, Jorge Gurgel, Jorge Santiago, Yuri Villefort… Duro de escolher quem será o faixa-preta de Jiu-Jitsu mais comentado ao final.

Entre todos eles, há um campeão da arte suave que faz sua estreia do alto de uma longa carreira.

Com 23 vitórias em 29 combates, o amazonense Adriano Martins faz sua estreia no Strikeforce em Sacramento após anos de batalhas de kimono no Tijuca, e nos ringues do Jungle Fight.

Principal representante da Top Life, em Manaus, Adriano encara Isaac Vallie-Flagg e defende os treinos no calor amazônico. “Não preciso estar lá fora passando por dificuldades, porque sei que nosso Estado tem como me ajudar, apoiando não só eu como outros atletas daqui” disse ele ao colaborador Arthur Castro. Adriano conta com o apoio de grandes empresas amazonenses.

Adriano fechou um contrato de quatro lutas com o Strikeforce, e a primeira é contra este americano de 13 triunfos em 17 lutas – Isaac vem de vitória sobre Gesias Cavalcante, por decisão dividida dos jurados.

O brasileiro embarca sábado para os Estados Unidos com sua equipe e lá finaliza o processo de perda de peso. “Essa é a parte mais difícil, pois preciso perder 16kg para bater 70 um dia antes do show. Para obter sucesso  na carreira internacional, estou me espelharndo em lutadores renomados como meu conterrâneo José Aldo, Anderson Silva e Vitor Belfort “, comentou.

Também entre os leves, Gilbert Melendez e Pat Healy se engalfinham pelo título.

Já Cat Zingano é vista como uma das grandes estrelas da noite.

“Ela tem toneladas de talento, e agora está chegando ao Strikeforce para se testar contra as melhores. Com uma sólida carreira no wrestling e sua própria escola de Jiu-Jitsu, no Colorado, ela é uma lutadora completa, que representa uma ameaça a todas as concorrentes do peso-galo”, disse o produtor Scott Coker ao MMAJunkie.com.

The card for the next Strikeforce show, coming up on the 29th, is packed with candidates for the “Submission of the Night” award.

In the main event, Gilbert Melendez will be carrying the flag of his Jiu-Jitsu teacher Cesar Gracie. In the female fight, Cat Zingano and Amanda Nunes will lock horns to see who’s got more grappling, skill and technique.

The rest of the card is also studded with stalwart fighters: Guto Inocente, Jorge Gurgel, Jorge Santiago… Predicting the Jiu-Jitsu black belt to make the most noise is a tough pick.

Among them, one gentle-art whiz will be making his promotional debut after a lengthy career.

With 23 wins in 29 fights, Amazonas State native Adriano Martins will be making his Strikeforce debut in Sacramento, California, after years of gi-clad combat at the Tijuca Tennis Club, as well as MMA action in his native Brazil at events like Jungle Fight.

The biggest name out of Top Life team, Adriano will be taking on Isaac Vallie-Flagg to prove the training in the equatorial heat of his home is all he needs. “I don’t need to be abroad going through a rough time, because I know our state can help me, backing not just me but other athletes from these parts,” he told our contributor Arthur Castro. Adriano is sponsored by a number of big companies from the state of Amazonas.

Adriano sealed a four-fight deal with Strikeforce, of which this fight against Isaac – an American with 13 wins in 17 fights, as well as a split decision win over Gesias Cavalcante – is the first.

The Brazilian and his team will be taking off for the United States this Saturday. There, he will go through the final process of shedding weight. “That’s the toughest part, because I have to lose 16 kg [35 lbs] to make 70 one day before the show. To achieve success in my international career I’m modeling myself on renowned fighters from my homeland like José Aldo, Anderson Silva and Vitor Belfort,” he said.

The show will also feature a lightweight title fight, with Gilbert Melendez defending his crown against Pat Healy.

Now Cat Zingano is also being touted as one of the big stars of the night.

“She’s got tons of talent, and now she’s arriving at Strikeforce to test herself against the best. With a solid wrestling career and her own Jiu-Jitsu school in Colorado, she’s a complete fighter who’s a threat to all the competition at bantamweight,” promotional president Scott Coker told the MMAJunkie.com website.

Milton Vieira put on a fine display this Saturday in Las Vegas, on his Strikeforce debut.

The king of the arm-triangle faced Sterling Ford, and after landing a high kick that rocked the American, lo and behold, out came the arm-triangle, ending the match at 4:49 minutes of the first round. With the win the black belt notches his 13th career victory, his ninth by submission.

In the evening’s main event, Jorge Gurgel was unable to repeat his better performances of the past and had his work cut out for him against Joe Duarte, who took the unanimous decision after three rounds, bringing his winning streak to four.

Now Danilo “Índio” Villefort started out well in his first appearance for the organization. Villefort brought on the pressure and came close to submitting Nate James with a rear-naked choke in the first round. But in the rounds that followed, James stifled Villefort’s efforts and was declared the winner by unanimous decision.

In the female fight Ronda Roussey took Sarah D’Alelio down and latched on to her arm, winning by armbar in just 25 seconds.

Miltinho Vieira fez bonito em sua estreia no Strikeforce, neste sábado, em Las Vegas.

O rei do triângulo de mão encarou Sterling Ford e, depois de acertar um chute alto que balançou o americano, deu o bote no pescoço com o seu golpe letal, o triângulo de mão. Aí foi só arrochar para encerrar o duelo, precisamente aos 4min49s. Com o triunfo, o faixa-preta chegou à 13ª vitória na carreira, a nona por finalização.

Na luta principal da noite, o cearense Jorge Gurgel não conseguiu repetir as últimas atuações e passou um aperto contra Joe Duarte. Ao final dos três giros, as papeletas marcaram vitória para Joe por decisão unânime. O lutador engatou a quinta vitória seguida.

Já Danillo Índio Villefort até começou bem em sua primeira apresentação na organização. Botou pressão e chegou perto de finalizar Nate James com um mata-leão, na primeira parcial. Mas, nos rounds seguintes, foi anulado pelo jogo de Nate, que, após três assaltos, foi declarado vencedor por decisão unânime.

No combate feminino, Ronda Roussey quedou e catou o braço de Sarah D’Alelio, finalizando com um armlock. Isso tudo com apenas 25s de luta.
