Twice the winner of the World Championship absolute division, in 1999 and 2000, the black belt Rodrigo “Comprido” Medeiros made his competition return last Saturday, August 18.

The leader of team Brasa Warrior in the USA took to the mats at the Chicago Open, held at the Odeum Expo Center in Villa Park, Illinois, where he captured gold in both the master superheavyweight and absolute divisions, closing out with his student Jonatas Novaes, who ended up with top spot on the podium.

Bicampeão mundial absoluto em 1999/2000, o faixa-preta Rodrigo “Comprido” Medeiros retornou ao Jiu-Jitsu de competição no último sábado, dia 18 de agosto.

O líder da Brasa Warrior nos EUA disputou o Chicago Open, no Odeum Expo Center de Villa Park, em Illinois, Estados Unidos, e por lá faturou a medalha de ouro no superpesado e a prata no absoluto master, ao fechar a divisão com seu aluno Jonatas Novaes, que ficou com o lugar mais alto do pódio.

With a twofold victory over GFTeam middleweight Vitor Henrique, Gracie Barra Jiu-Jitsu professor Otavio Sousa snapped up another two gold medals for his extensive collection.

Otavio won both the middleweight and open weight divisions at the Chicago Summer International Open, an IBJJF-sanctioned event held this Saturday at the Odeum Expo Center in Villa Park, Illinois.

The fact the competition reached maximum capacity is testament to how much the sport is growing in the region, and a number of other standouts surfaced there.

Alliance athlete Gabriel Goulart won the medium heavyweight division and took bronze in the absolute. From the GB competition team, Bruno Amorim took the other absolute bronze and silver at lightweight, with Philipe “Furão” taking first.

In the master black belt division, Rodrigo Comprido returned to competition after the Worlds and closed out with his student Jonatas Novaes (Brasa Warrior), who went home with the gold.

At brown belt, the absolute title went to Thomas McMahon, with his Ecuadorian colleague Francisco Iturralde in second.

Com uma dupla vitória sobre o peso médio Vitor Henrique, atleta da GFTeam, o professor da Gracie Barra Otavio Sousa faturou mais duas medalhas de ouro para sua ampla coleção.

Otavio foi o campeão dos médios e do aberto do Chicago Summer International Open, realizado nesse sábado no Odeum Expo Center de Villa Park, em Illinois.

O torneio da IBJJF, que atingiu sua capacidade máxima de atletas confirmando o crescimento do esporte na região, viu ainda outros destaques.

O atleta da Alliance Gabriel Goulart venceu o meio-pesado e beliscou o bronze no absoluto. Da GB, Bruno Amorim ficou com o bronze absoluto e a prata no peso leve, com Philipe “Furão” em primeiro.

Na faixa-preta master, Rodrigo Comprido voltou após lutar o Mundial e fechou com o aluno Jonatas Novaes (Brasa Warrior), que levou o ouro.

Na faixa-marrom, o título absoluto foi de Thomas McMahon, com o colega equatoriano Francisco Iturralde em segundo.

O Jiu-Jitsu invadiu o Etobicoke Olympium Gym, em Toronto, no Canadá, sábado passado. Por lá, rolou o Toronto Open, mais um evento aberto da IBJJF, e o velho ditado “olho por olho, dente por dente”, foi colocado em prática nas áreas de luta.

Se Jonatas Novaes (Brasa) bateu Oliver Geddes (Gracie Barra) na final do meio-pesado, o inglês deu o troco no derradeiro combate do absoluto. O pupilo de Roger Gracie, que é fã da meia-guarda, logo chamou para sua posição preferida. De lá, teve calma e paciência, para trabalhar por baixo e não se desesperar, mesmo quando Jonatas chegou ao cem quilos. O faixa-preta repôs a meia e depois atacou uma chave de pé reta para só soltar o golpe quando o brasileiro deu os três tapinhas. Veja abaixo:

Ainda na faixa-preta só que no master, Jorge Britto ficou em primeiro no médio.
No placar geral, a primeira colocação ficou com a Toronto BJJ, seguida pela Mendes Bros e Renzo Gracie.

Jiu-Jitsu invaded Toronto, Canada’s Etobicoke Olympium Gym last Saturday, when the IBJJF Toronto Open unfolded and the old adage “an eye for an eye, tooth for a tooth” was put to practice in the contest area.

While Jonatas Novaes (Brasa) outdid Oliver Geddes (Gracie Barra) in the medium heavyweight final, the Englishman dished out comeuppance in the absolute. The Roger Gracie pupil, a half-guard buff, was swift in making it to his favorite position. There, he calmly and patiently worked from the bottom without despairing, even when Jonatas made it to side-control. The black belt replaced half-guard and then attacked with a straight footlock, only letting go once the Brazilian had tapped out in desistence. Watch the match below:

Also in the black belt contest, but in the master age group, Jorge Britto took first in the middleweight division. In the overall team contest, Toronto BJJ took first, followed by Mendes Bros and then Renzo Gracie.

A black belt in Jiu-Jitsu and owner of a number of IBJJF titles, Jonatas Novaes saw MMA action this Saturday, June 16, at SF Shofight 20. At the Springfield, Missouri event, the Rodrigo Comprido students was quick on the trigger and took just 51 seconds before landing a high kick um chute alto,

that landed in full, dropping dazed former UFC fighter Drew Fickett to the mat. Following up on the ground, the Brazilian dropped fists to finish what he started.

In other fights on the Shofight card, Lyle Beerbohm took a unanimous decision over Marcus Aurélio, and Kendall Grove overcame Derek Brunson by split decision. In the main event of the evening, John Gunderson tapped out former UFC fighter Karo Parisyan with a first-round guillotine.

Faixa-preta de Jiu-Jitsu dono de variados títulos da IBJJF, Jonatas Novaes esteve em ação pelo MMA nesse sábado, 16 de junho, no evento SF Shofight 20. Em Springfield, Missouri, o aluno de Rodrigo Comprido foi rápido no gatilho e só precisou de 51 segundos para acertar um chute alto, que fez o ex-lutador do UFC Drew Fickett descer grogue. No chão, o brasileiro desceu o braço para liquidar a fatura.

With a number of IBJJF titles on his CV, Jiu-Jitsu black belt Jonatas Novaes has an MMA fight scheduled for the June 16 SF Shofight 20 event. The fight will be held in Springfield, Missouri, and the Rodrigo Comprido student will take on speedy former UFC fighter Drew Fickett.

“He’s got a lot of experience. I know it’ll be tough, but I have faith in God, I’m leaving there with the win,” said the Brazilian who now counts nine wins on his MMA record. Now his American opponent is 59-fights old, and has won 42 of them.

When you let a Jiu-Jitsu fighter make it to side-control,it’s an indication that he’s heading in the right direction—and that you’ve got problems on your hands. He has passed your guard, amounting to three points on the scoreboard, and now he’s all set to mount and/or finish you. Both at tournaments and in training, the chest-on-chest position causes discomfort, and if the guy on top drops his hips the pressure becomes all the greater.

To review the position, start by studying the attack, as our GMA in Texas João Crus did, teaching two attacks from side-control and even a trick to thwarting an attempt at a reversal.

Now, GRACIEMAG.com lays out 5 important lessons for you to get out from between a chest and a hard place, provided by some stars of gi-clad combat.

1. DON’T CLUTCH YOUR OPPONENT TO YOU

As pointed out by João Paulo Marques, a black belt from Mossoró Combat and training partner to the UFC’s Gleison Tibau, “Ideally you wouldn’t let your opponent get to that position. But once he’s there, never clutch him to you. Try hiding your neck and arms, and try to get him away from you so you can replace guard.” Should your opponent clutch your neck, João Paulo suggests you pummel your arm under for an underhook and slide to his back. “It’s a clever and really efficient escape.”

2. DON’T JUST SIT THERE, GET MOVING

“Always keep moving so as not to let your opponent be at ease,” recommends Rodrigo Comprido. “Shrimp out your hips to open up the room needed for escape,” says the two-time absolute world champion, one of the main draws of the 2012 Pan and inaugural World Jiu-Jitsu Expo.

3. ELBOWS NEAR YOUR KNEES

“The most important thing to do to not get trapped in side-control is to use your elbows and knees as protection,” asserts Renato Tavares of ATT Vero Beach. “Always keep your elbows near your knees, not leaving room for your opponent to exert control, and making room for you to escape or sweep.”

4. STRING TOGETHER SEVERAL ESCAPES

“In side-control, the best hint I can give is for you to not stop moving when your opponent is passing,” says Jonatas Novaes, winner of the absolute division at the Chicago Winter Open. “Don’t let him settle in just because he’s got your side. At that moment that he’s arriving there he’s still not firm in the position, so it’s easier for you to get out. Now if he’s already passed and scored the points, you’d best take a breath and wait for the right moment to explode out of there. Try combining several escapes, making him defend a lot and open up room for you to replace guard or half-guard. Don’t forget to protect your neck and arms to keep from getting tapped out.”

5. WATCH HOW TO PRESS FOR GUARD REPLACEMENT

Professor Marcos Schubert of Gracie Barra Curitiba has posted a number of techniques on YouTube.com, and in the video below he shows how to wriggle out of side-control. Schubert highlights the importance of placing one hand on the shoulder and the other on the hip, pressing away to open up room with which to shrimp out your hip and replace guard.
