A Jiu-Jitsu champion of the world in 2003, ’05 and ’06, and the Dream bantamweight GP winner in 20011, Bibiano Fernandes is the latest gentle-art ace called up by the UFC. The thick-skinned shorty who swiftly dispatches opponents with double, sometimes triple, attacks already has a date and location for his octagon debut. The bantamweight from the Amazon will be taking on another Jiu-Jitsu whiz in Roland Delorme (8w, 1l) on July 21 at UFC 149, which will unfold in Delorme’s homeland.

Brazil’s “The Flash” is the 11th black belt IBJJF world champion in Jiu-Jitsu to enter the Ultimate Fighting Championship ranks, joining the likes of Amaury Bitetti, Fabio Gurgel, Roberto Traven, João Roque, Marcio Pé de Pano, Murilo Bustamante, Frédson Paixão, Gabriel Napão, BJ Penn and Fabricio Werdum. (Not to mention Sérgio Moraes and Delson “Pé de Chumbo”, who have done battle in the octagon, but only in TUF Brazil, so far.)

Campeão mundial de Jiu-Jitsu (2003/05/06) e do GP dos galos do Dream (2011), Bibiano Fernandes é o mais novo ás do Jiu-Jitsu contratado do UFC. O baixinho casca-grossa que despachava oponentes com a velocidade de seus ataques duplos, por vezes triplos, já tem data e local para a estreia no Octagon. O peso-galo amazonense encara o canadense também bom de Jiu-Jitsu Roland Delorme (8v, 1d), no dia 21 de julho, pelo UFC 149, que será realizado na casa do adversário.

O “The Flash” verde-amarelo é o 11º faixa-preta que foi campeão mundial de Jiu-Jitsu pela IBJJF a ingressar no Ultimate. Bibiano junta-se a Amaury Bitetti, Fabio Gurgel, Roberto Traven, João Roque, Marcio Pé de Pano, Murilo Bustamante, Frédson Paixão, Gabriel Napão, BJ Penn e Fabricio Werdum. Jiu-Jitsu black belt João Roque was a brilliant force in Japan’s MMA academies and rings. Now the fighter commands a full-fledged troop of fighters, having promoted dozens of black belts.

In the video below, João teaches a submission technique that can be used either in MMA or in no-gi contests, like in the ADCC. It’s worth noting that the heelhook isn’t allowed in sport Jiu-Jitsu.

Faixa-preta de Jiu-Jitsu, João Roque brilhou nos dojôs e nos ringues de MMA japoneses. Hoje o lutador comanda uma verdadeira tropa em Brasília, tendo formado dezenas de faixas-pretas. 

No vídeo abaixo, João ensina uma técnica de finalização que pode ser usada no MMA ou em disputas sem kimono como o ADCC. Vale lembrar que a chave de calcanhar não é permitida no Jiu-Jitsu esportivo.

This September 25 the 15^th Brazilian Team National Championship will take place in the Tijuca Tennis Club. Sign-ups are open (sign up here) and should you need to renew your IBJJF ID cards, they will be valid for the 2011 season, too.

It’s a tradition that the Brazilian Team Nationals includes some of the country’s most prominent teams, going for gold in stages defined by the best of five confrontations. The team to notch three wins first stays in the running. Another of the event’s peculiarities is that the brown belts are thrown into the black belt mix. This peculiarity has brought about emotion-filled victories, like Vitor Dórea’s (brown belt) over the seasoned Roberto “Roleta”, with a traditional foot-on-bicep sweep in the very last minute.

Alexandre Café was a shoo-in for GB in the competition. He dispatched Marcelo Garcia at the tournament in 2002.

At the first installment, in 1996, dominion at the highest rank went to Gracie Barra and Alliance. Beasts like Marcio Feitosa, Alexandre Soca, Rafael Gordinho and Bruno Severiano overcame Nova União, which boasted the likes of Vitor Shaolin, João Roque and André Marola. Among the heavyweights, Fabio Gurgel, Alexandre Paiva and Eduardo Jamelão led the way to their triumph over GB’s Roberto Gordo and Roleta. Another curiosity, GRACIEMAG made it onto the blue belt winners’ stand with editor of photography Gustavo Aragão.

The biggest champions at lightweight brown/black belt of all times are Gracie Barra and Nova União, with four wins apiece. Tied with the same score, the biggest heavyweight brown/black belt winners are Gracie Barra and Alliance.

Acontece no dia 25 de setembro, no Tijuca Tênis Clube, a 15a edição do Campeonato Brasileiro de Equipes. As inscrições já estão abertas (inscreva-se aqui) e no caso da necessidade de renovar a carteirinha da CBJJ, estas já estarão válidas para a temporada 2011. 

Já é tradição o Brasileiro de Equipes contar com os principais times do país, que buscam o ouro em fases definidas numa melhor de cinco confrontos. A equipe que conseguir três vitórias primeiro segue no páreo. Outra peculiaridade do evento é os faixas-marrons competirem na mesma categoria que os pretas. Tal particularidade já proporcionou vitórias emocionantes, como a de Vitor Dórea (faixa-marrom) contra o experiente Roberto “Roleta”, com a tradicional raspada com os pés no bíceps, no último minuto.
