The co-main event saw ADCC champion João Assis fight Mikey Perez, who replaced Jeff Monson last-minute for the no-gi match. After many attempts at passing Perez’s guard, Assis won via unanimous decision to win the heavyweight belt.

Also victorious was Edwin Najmi. The black-belt under Rômulo Barral faced Nathan Mandelsohn, who replaced DJ Jackson. Najmi won via unanimous decision to win the welterweight belt.

Who are your favorites for the 2015 ADCC?

The 2015 ADCC is finally here.

Milton Vieira was the last athlete to be confirmed for the -77kg division.

With all the names laid out, we now can go about a brief analysis of each one of the seven weight categories.

Of course, as we still don’t know how the brackets will be drawn, there’s no way of knowing what’s going to be the path to gold medal for each of the athletes.

Therefore, we’re gonna take a look on the names and pick the most likely to be in the semifinals.

We will not pick the most likely finalists, once that is too much influenced by the setting of the brackets.

Here we go.

Male -66 kg

The absence of Rafael Mendes left the division wide open for anyone to challenge the reigning champion Rubens Cobrinha. Augusto Mendes, Gianni Grippo, Ed Cummings, Bruno Frazatto and Justin Rader are the strongest candidates to be in the semifinals alongside Cobrinha, who is the overall favorite.

Garry Tonon, a surprise in 2013, is now a consolidated talent who has all the tools to make a real run for the title. Lucas Lepri, Gilbert Burns, AJ Agazarm, Ben Henderson and Dillon Danis should also be looked at carefully.

Rodolfo Vieira, Alexandre Ribeiro, Felipe Pena, Tom DeBlass, Hector Lombard, Cassio Francis are some of the obstacles Assis will have to jump over to make it to the top of the podium one more time.

GMA member Stephan Goyne of Bay Jiu-Jitsu has put together an opportunity to learn from recent World No-Gi champion and ADCC champion Joao Assis.

The checkmat black belt will travel to the bay area for a three-day seminar from Nov. 14 to 16. There will be six chances to train with him, all two hours each with an open mat at the end.

The World Jiu-Jitsu Expo announced another attraction for this year’s event.

ADCC champion João Assis will fight Rolles Gracie in a 15-minute no-gi match.

The 2014 WJJE takes place October 18-19 at the Long Beach Convention Center, in California.

Other than the superfight between Assis and Gracie, the event will also feature many other attractions.

Marcus Buchecha, Leo Veira, the Mendes Bros and Roberto Cyborg will be teaching seminars.

All seminars at the WJJE will be in the gi.

Three IBJJF events will take place during the Expo: IBJJF Pro League, the American Nationals Kids and the Long Beach Open.

Three other superfights are also already confirmed – Gianni Grippo vs. Augusto Tanquinho, Nino Schembri vs. Vitor Shaolin, Robson Moura vs. Marcos Parrumpinha.

O duelo de gigantes será sem o kimono, e vai botar em rota de colisão os faixas-pretas Rolles Gracie (Renzo Gracie) e João Assis (Checkmat). A luta será sob as regras sem pano da IBJJF.

Sangue azul do Jiu-Jitsu, Rolles foi vice-campeão acima de 99kg no ADCC 2007, e hoje treina e ensina em NY com uma galera de respeito. Já João Assis, vice do ADCC em 2011 e campeão em 2013 é um dos principais parceiros de treino do astro Marcus Buchecha na Checkmat na Califórnia. João é conhecido pelas quedas e pelos fortes ataques no pé.
