Em ritmo alucinante nos campeonatos, com ouro e pódio em boa parte dos torneios que participou nesta temporada, Lucas “Hulk” Barbosa conseguiu um tempinho no seu frenético cronograma para trazer para você, estudioso leitor de GRACIEMAG, uma valiosa passagem de guarda.

Na aula, Hulk mostra sua duas opções prediletas para passar a guarda-x. O professor da Atos Jiu-Jitsu ressalta, primeiramente, a importância de manter uma boa postura, se livrando das pegadas do adversário, evitando que o guardeiro se estique para tirar-lhe a base.

Em seguida, Lucas troca o eixo de seu posicionamento por cima para se livrar com mais facilidade da arapuca da guarda, para em seguida jogar o corpo lateralmente e cair passando. Para concluir e estabilizar, Lucas mostra duas opções: ou anda para trás com os quadris e estabiliza no cem-quilos, ou gira por cima da cabeça e ganha as costas.

Na última sexta-feira, Augusto Tanquinho conquistou o peso-pena no WPJJC 2013, em Abu Dhabi, e confirmou mais uma vez que está no mesmo nível de astros máximos da categoria, como Rafael Mendes e Rubens Cobrinha.

Foi justamente contra Cobrinha, que o havia vencido nas duas últimas vezes que se esbarraram, que Tanquinho fez a final da divisão até 70kg. Uma raspagem deu a medalha de ouro para o carioca professor da Soul Fighters.

Em entrevista a GracieMag, Augusto Tanquinho listou o que aprendeu no torneio, analisou sua luta e destacou a receita principal para o sucesso.

GracieMag: Você e o Rubens Cobrinha já lutaram diversas vezes e se conhecem muito bem. Como analisa a final do WPJJC 2013, em Abu Dhabi?

AUGUSTO TANQUINHO: Foi uma luta mais estratégica, no meu ponto de vista. Entrei com uma estratégia e a segui até o fim para vencer. O Cobrinha é muito perigoso quando domina a manga cruzada e eu sabia que não poderia deixar ele ter essa pegada de jeito nenhum. A partir daí não amarrei, só não deixei ele levar a luta para o jogo dele, afinal um cara perigoso como o Cobrinha com sua principal posição encaixada seria mortal. Conheço bem o jogo dele e sei muito bem o perigo quando ele tem a manga cruzada dominada.

Qual foi sua estratégia, em detalhes?

Numa luta de 6 minutos, o principal é não sair perdendo. Minha estratégia foi sair na frente, raspando ou derrubando. E quando estivesse por cima, a tática era estourar a pegada cruzada o tempo todo e procurar por espaços para passar. No fim deu certo (risos). O Cobrinha tem uma base muito boa também e é sempre difícil raspá-lo. As pessoas estão acostumadas a me ver lutando mais por cima e acham que não tenho guarda, mas na academia treino muito mais por baixo que por cima. Assim consegui raspar e vencer.

E você havia perdido para ele há pouco, no Pan da IBJJF.

Acho que a minha estrela brilha em Abu Dhabi (risos). Acredito que tanto no Europeu como no Pan eu perdi no detalhe. No Europeu perdi de 2 a 0, e no minuto final ataquei um pé, fiquei por baixo e tomei os pontos. Já no Pan perdi nas vantagens, achei que tinha que ter ganho dois pontos quando ataquei o pé e saímos para fora da área de luta, mas o árbitro não deu os pontos. Enfim, não sou de reclamar de juiz, mas a vitória dessa vez veio por detalhe também, errei menos e aproveitei mais as oportunidades. Isso fez muita diferença nesse campeonato.

Você teve outras lutas memoráveis no WPJJC 2013?

Tive algumas lutas bem difíceis, fiz quatro até a final. Fiquei feliz, pois fui crescendo no decorrer do campeonato. Na primeira luta finalizei o Felipe Cavalcante com uma mão-de-vaca. Na segunda luta venci na decisão do juiz o Gilson “Neném” Nunes. Ele me surpreendeu bastante, e mostrou uma guarda bem complicada de passar. Como ataquei do início ao fim, garanti a vaga na semifinal. Na briga pela semifinal encontrei Michel Maia, gaúcho que tem ensinado em Abu Dhabi, e foi um lutão, estava perdendo de uma vantagem, mas consegui uma queda e venci por 2 a 0. Michel é muito técnico e forte no peso-pena.

Além da medalha de ouro e dos dólares, que aprendizado você trouxe na bagagem?

Aprendi que você deve acreditar em si do início ao fim em todas as lutas. E para ter bastante confiança no seu jogo é fundamental treinar e treinar. Isso é o segredo simples do sucesso.

GRACIEMAG.com: The promoters of Metamoris Pro, coming up on the 14th in San Diego, California, matched you up against Otavio Sousa in one of the no-points, 20-minute bouts on the card. Have you changed the way you train at all because of the rules?

KRON GRACIE: Not at all. I’m training the same as I always do. I’m training hard with my team here at the academy. Everything’s perfect. I fight targeting the finish, without thinking about points or time, so nothing has changed. I’m just training really hard because it’ll be a tough match. I’m rotating through the students on the team. There’s Patrick, who just got his black belt not long ago, and other really tough students who are helping me out too.

You got injured at the 2012 Worlds. How’s your knee?

It’s 110%. I’m as ready for war as can be. I’m just waiting for time to come.

What guidance has your father, Rickson, offered you about the new rules?

He’s made some special recommendations, but I can’t reveal them to you, can I (laughs)? He’ll be there in my corner on the 14th. Truth is, I always have my dad helping me, whether at the academy or over the phone when he’s in Brazil or traveling.

What are your thoughts on this no-points format?

To me it’s like a dream. I’m anxious to see how things flow. I think I’ll be a lot more at ease, since I’ll have time to work. I’m certainly a bit happier that we’ll have a bit more time to see who’s the better fighter.

Are the rules good for the sport and Jiu-Jitsu fans?

I think we’ll find that out after the event. As André Galvão told you, what’s important is that the fighters don’t go in there just trying for the draw. The rules are perfect for you to go on the attack and win the fight. That’s what’s important—wanting to win the fight. If the athletes are going for victory, and not just aiming to tie or not lose, the event will be really cool. Otherwise, it could be a boring 20 minutes.

What do you think of Otavio Sousa as an opponent?

Otavio is the current world middleweight champion and I think he’s really tough. He gave me a chance to face him, so I’m honored to fight the champion. Let’s see who wins.

What’s your angle on the current Jiu-Jitsu-tournament panorama?

In my opinion, it’s on the decline. I feel Jiu-Jitsu is getting worse. These days we see blue and purple belts who think Jiu-Jitsu’s all about grabbing the sleeve and trying those little sweeps… I feel they lose time with all that and the sport is getting worse with that kind of game. But no one can control that—not me; I can only do my best to see that Jiu-Jitsu keeps moving forward, upward. I feel beginners these days need to get inspired by Jiu-Jitsu as a whole, not just sport Jiu-Jitsu. I want to do this match at Metamoris so fans can see the real Jiu-Jitsu.

How do you see the future of competition Jiu-Jitsu?

In the future, I hope there’ll be more events like Metamoris, events that can make the fighters comfortable to express themselves and that are more interesting for the crowd to watch. I feel that that’s how Jiu-Jitsu will make it to TV and to an Olympic level. That’s the path, and not through the stalled matches we’re seeing these days. I feel there should be more rules against stalling in Jiu-Jitsu. Look at judo—you can’t stop, can’t do certain things.

What’s it like to train hard while managing an academy?

I feel it’s like having two jobs. It’s kind of hard; you have to do everything at the academy and still train not just to fight, but to try and be at your best. I try doing what I can as best I can. When it’s possible, it’s possible. Today I’m focused on training, but soon my focus will be back on training my students and investing in the business.

André Galvão had some kind words about you here on GRACIEMAG.com, saying you stick your neck out at championships. What did you think of that?

He’s a great guy who I respect a lot. I feel that when we realize there are guys out there like us, guys who are going after the same thing you are, that naturally generates mutual respect, even if you’re opponents on the mat. He, like the others, is a warrior who is always in Jiu-Jitsu to win it. I respect him and other top guys, like Marcelo Garcia, Roger, Rodolfo and others.

Do you ever think of doing MMA?

Of course, that’s certainly on my mind. I love competing, love representing Jiu-Jitsu and my team. Just let me get to a point where I can focus on that and it’ll happen. You can count on it.

UFC Rio 3 promised to be an honest show, but a new, Jiu-Jitsu brown belt, call-up has elevated UFC 153 to super-event status. José Aldo will take on former lightweight champion Frankie Edgar, who stepped in for an injured Erick Koch.

André Pederneiras, the featherweight champion’s coach, took the news in stride. “I got a call from Sean Shelby, the UFC matchmaker, at around midnight. He said Erick Koch had gotten injured and that Frankie Edgar would take his place. I was surprised, if just because of the late hour, but seeing as there’s still enough time to change the strategy, even with his game being completely different from Koch’s, I feel we’ll be successful once again,” Dedé is quoted as saying on sportv.com.

“Now I’m going to sit down and rethink my plans regarding the athletes I imported—they’re southpaws and the old opponent’s height. What I’ll have to do is hire some wrestlers who’re as tall as Edgar is. Gray Maynard coming will be more important than ever. I feel Edgar will be just as fast at featherweight as he was at his old weight,” adds the coach.

This will be Edgar’s first fight at featherweight, having decided to drop a weight class following his second loss to Ben Henderson.

UFC Rio 3 is set to go down October 13 at the HSBC in Rio de Janeiro.
