The UFC is venturing for the first time into China and its over-a-billion-strong market, a fraction of which would do heaps for Dana White’s audience. Will the show win over the popular tastes in those parts?

With the main event between former middleweight champion Rich Franklin and Hollywood star Cung Le, the die is cast.

But before the big show can begin, the fighters had to take on another stern opponent: the scale. Official weigh-ins went down this morning, and only Hyun Gyu Lim was unable to make weight. His fight with David Mitchell has now been canceled.

This Saturday the UFC makes its first incursion into Chinese territory, pitching tent in Macau. What follows is GRACIEMAG.com’s list of the five fights on the card that are bound to get the Jiu-Jitsu crew out of their seats. The main event doesn’t even figure in the equation, to give you an idea of how potent a mix there is to come.

Which is the one you’ll make a point not to miss?

1. Thiago Silva vs. Stanislav Nedkov

It’s no easy task that he’s got ahead of him, but Thiago Silva has to win to keep in the UFC top brass’ good graces. After all, three failures in a row would have anyone nervous about their job security. Now, while the Bulgarian beast Stanislav Nedkov boasts a Jiu-Jitsu black belt of his own, it’s the perfect fight for the light heavyweight Silva to use his sweep- and submission-heavy ground game. Might the Brazilian soften the undefeated Nedkov up on the feet before finishing him off on the ground? Or will he wear the Bulgarian out on the ground to knock him out on the feet? Either way, we’re bracing for a barnburner, standing or on the ground.

Prediction: Thiago Silva

2. Dong Hyun Kim vs. Paulo Thiago

Dong “Stun Gun” Kim and the policeman from Brasilia are in the same boat: they’re both coming off a loss and need a win to stay relevant in the welterweight division. Kim will have the crowd on his side, and he will be looking for all-out standup exchanges, using his characteristic long-range kicks and punches. Officer Paulo Thiago will need to curb the Korean’s enthusiasm, and Jiu-Jitsu may be the way.

Prediction: Paulo Thiago

3. Takanori Gomi vs. Mac Danzig

A beast from back in the days of Pride FC, Takanori Gomi will be looking to take his American foe down and work him over with ground and pound. Gomi will likely try to steer clear of the striking game, as Mac Danzig is proven in the Thai boxing department. Who falls first? Who wins?

Prediction: Mac Danzig

4. Zhang Tie Quan vs. Jon Tuck

Chinese lightweight Zhang Tie (15w, 3l) is a brown belt in Jiu-Jitsu and has 12 submission wins to brag of. The coolest part is that he likes keeping the fight standing at the start, throwing potent punches and counter-attacking with his takedown game. That’s the style undefeated UFC first-timer Jon “Super Saiyan” Tuck of Guam will need to decipher. Tuck is a well-rounded fighter himself, so the odds are the match-up will make for a great fight.

Prediction: Zhang Tie

5. Riki Fukuda vs. Tom DeBlass

An experienced New Jersey-based Ricardo Cachorrão black belt, Tom DeBlass has held heavyweight and light heavyweight titles from other promotions. Now a middleweight in the UFC, Tom is hoping to get back to his winning ways, since failing to take down and finish the lanky Cyrille Diabete losing via split decision. Now he’s set to face Riki Fukuda, a Japanese fighter who has been around the block himself, having fought in the Shooto, Pancrase, K-1 and Deep promotions. The Chinese crowd probably won’t be too keen on a Japanese fighter, so Tom’s task is to win them over, sidestep Fukuda’s fists and go for the finish.

Prediction: Tom DeBlass

Apesar da pedreira búlgara Stanislav Nedkov também ostentar a faixa-preta de Jiu-Jitsu, é a luta perfeita para o Silva dos meio-pesados usar seu jogo de solo, rico em raspagens e finalizações. Será que o brasileiro vai amaciar em pé e despachar o invicto Nedkov no chão? Ou então cansar o búlgaro no chão para derrubar em pé? Seja como for, nossa torcida é para um lutaço, no chão ou em pé.

2 . Dong Hyun Kim vs Paulo Thiago

Dong “Stun Gun “ Kim está na mesma situação que o policial de Brasília: está vindo de derrota e quer a vitória para seguir vivo no Ultimate. Kim terá a torcida a seu lado, tem chutes e socos fortes de longa distância como característica em seus combates e vai buscar a trocação franca com o brasileiro. O caveira Paulo Thiago vai precisar domar bem a empolgação do coreano, e o Jiu-Jitsu pode ser a saída.

3 . Takanori Gomi vs Mac Danzig

Monstrinho nos tempos do Pride, Takanori Gomi volta ao UFC novamente com o intuito de botar o rival americano para baixo  e trabalhar o ground and pound. Em pé, pode complicar para Gomi, afinal Mac Danzig é um ótimo lutador de muay thai. Quem vai cair primeiro? Quem vence?

4 . Zhang Tie Quan vs Jon Tuck

O peso leve chinês Zhang Tie (15v, 3d) é faixa-marrom de Jiu-Jitsu e conta com 12 finalizações no seu cartel. O mais maneiro é que o doido gosta de manter a luta em pé no início, de onde solta fortes socos e, no contra-ataque, encaixa seu jogo de quedas. É esse estilo que o invicto Jon “Super Saiyan” Tuck (6v), atleta da ilha americana de Guam, vai precisar decifrar. Estreante no UFC, Tuck também tem um jogo completo. Promessa de lutão.

5 . Riki Fukuda vs Tom DeBlass

Experiente faixa-preta de Ricardo Cachorrão em Nova Jersey, Tom DeBlass já foi dono de cinturões no peso pesado e no meio-pesado. Hoje no peso médio do UFC, Tom quer reencontrar o caminho das vitórias, após não conseguir botar para baixo e finalizar o esguio Cyrille Diabaté. Perdeu na decisão dividida, e agora encara o rodado Riki Fukuda, japonês que lutou no Shooto, Pancrase, K-1 e Deep.  A torcida chinesa não deve apoiar muito um japonês, então para Tom é ganhar a galera, desviar das patadas de Fukuda e finalizar.

Neste sábado, 10h da manhã, o UFC aporta pela primeira vez na China, na província de Macau. E o faixa-preta de Jiu-Jitsu Thiago Silva (14v, 3d) é um dos destaques.

O paulista colecionador de cabeças vai fazer penúltima luta da noite, contra a pedreira búlgara Stanislav Nedkov (12v, 0d), também faixa-preta da arte suave. Thiago vem de duas derrotas e um no contest e precisa de uma boa atuação para continuar prestigiado.

This Saturday, the UFC sets up shop on Chinese soil for the first time. And there, in China-administered Macau, Jiu-Jitsu black belt Thiago Silva (14w, 3l) will be looking to reencounter his winning ways.

The heavy hitter from São Paulo will be starring in the co-main event, facing Bulgaria’s Stanislav Nedkov (12w, 0l), another black belt in the gentle art. Thiago is coming off back-to-back losses and a no contest and is in dire need of a win to steer his career back on course.

As GRACIEMAG.com predicted, the South Korean Chang Sun Jung proved the power of his Jiu-Jitsu last night in Fairfax, Virginia, during the main event at UFC on Fuel 3.

The “Korean Zombie” didn’t just do that, he also put on a standup clinic against Dustin Poirier in the octagon. In the second round, Chang slapped on armbars, omoplatas, triangles—all duly defended by his American opponent. But the merit in Jiu-Jitsu comes from being patient and undermining the opponent with double attacks, and the Korean ultimately came up with the finish in the fourth round.

Following a flurry of solid strikes and a big flying knee, the contender for José Aldo’s belt finished up in grand style, sinking a suffocatingly snug arm-triangle.

THE BELLY’S ROLE IN THE MOVE

“He did everything just right. He sunk the triangle and thrust his belly over the opponent’s head,” noted professor of Jiu-Jitsu Elinor Batista, the leader of Garra Fight team. “The American didn’t tap in time and ended up passing out. There really was a lot of pressure behind it.”

The fight and the finish netted “Fight of the Night” and “Submission of the Night” honors for the stalwart Korean. Now “Knockout of the Night” went to Tom Lawlor, who took just 50 seconds in downing the veteran Jason MacDonald.

Como o GRACIEMAG.com havia previsto, o sul-coreano Chang Sun Jung comprovou a força de seu Jiu-Jitsu na noite de ontem, em Fairfax, pelo UFC on Fuel 3.

O “Zumbi Coreano” encarou Dustin Poirier não ficou apenas nisso, e deu uma aula em pé e no chão no Octagon. No segundo assalto, Chang encaixou armlocks, omoplatas e triângulos, todos muito bem defendidos pelo americano. Mas o mérito do Jiu-Jitsu é ter paciência e ir minando o oponente com ataques duplos, e o lutador asiático alcançou a finalização no quarto round.

Depois de acertar bons golpes e uma joelhada voadora, o candidato ao cinturão de José Aldo enfim encerrou a luta, e em grande estilo, com um justíssimo estrangulamento de mão.

O papel do abdome no golpe

“Ele fez tudo certinho. Encaixou o triângulo e jogou o abdome para cima da cabeça do adversário”, reparou o professor de Jiu-Jitsu Elinor Batista, que é líder da equipe cearense Garra Fight. “O americano não bateu e acabou apagando, realmente é muita pressão”.

O combate e seu desfecho valeram o bônus de melhor luta e melhor finalização da noite. Já o nocaute da edição foi para Tom Lawlor, que precisou de parcos 50 segundos para levar o veterano Jason MacDonald à lona.

Confira, no vídeo abaixo, como finalizar de forma parecida com o kimono. Repare que o cadeado bem fechado e a direção do seu tronco contra a cabeça do oponente são importantes para o golpe dar certo.

Tuesday is UFC day. The most famous cage in MMA makes its way to the Patriot Center in Fairfax, Virginia, with a number of promising bouts featuring on the card for UFC on Fuel TV 3. Who’s the biggest star on the card? Probably Jiu-Jitsu.

The 12-fight card is headlined by South Korea’s Chan Sung Jung, the “Korean Zombie,” who will be locking horns with Dustin Poirier. Among the other matchups, there’s Jiu-Jitsu black belt Rafael dos Anjos taking on Kamal Shalorus, and seasoned Nova União/Boxe Thai ace Johnny Eduard facing the plenty experienced Jeff Curran.

On the main card, Donald “Cowboy” Cerrone will do battle with Jeremy Stephens. Both fighters are trying to get back on the winning track, with the former having lost to Nate Diaz at UFC 141 and Stephens losing to Anthony Pettis at UFC 136.

Despite his fearsome reputation as a knockout artist, Cerrone took to the UFC website to demonstrate his favorite move—the triangle, a position that’s yielded the American six of his 17 career wins. “It’s important not to let your opponent posture up,” he teaches.

Terça-feira também é dia de lutas no Ultimate. A gaiola mais famosa do MMA aterrissa hoje no Patriot Center, em Fairfax, nos Estados Unidos, e traz combates promissores pelo UFC on Fuel TV 3. O maior astro do card? Provavelmente o Jiu-Jitsu.

O evento vem com 12 combates, e a fera de chão coreana Chan Sung Jung, o “Zumbi Coreano”, faz a luta principal contra Dustin Poirier. Entre outras feras, o faixa-preta de Jiu-Jitsu Rafael dos Anjos terá Kamal Shalorus pela frente. Já Johnny Eduardo, da Nova União/Boxe Thai, cai para dentro do experiente Jeff Curran.

No card principal, Donald “Cowboy” Cerrone encara Jeremy Stephens. Ambos buscam reencontrar o caminho da vitória, já que o duro vaqueiro foi superado por Nate Diaz no UFC 141, e Stephens perdeu para Anthony Pettis na edição 136.

Apesar de ser um temido nocauteador, Cerrone demonstrou ao site do UFC o seu golpe preferido, o triângulo – posição em que o americano terminou seis das 17 vitórias. “O importante é não deixar o adversário fazer postura”, ensina.
