One of the attractions on tap for the October 14 Metamoris Pro event in San Diego, California, is the matchup between gentle-art professors Jean Jacques Machado and Nelson Monteiro, the two gentle-art idols from the early days of Jiu-Jitsu in Abu Dhabi facing off in a 20-minute match where only submissions count for the win.

Riding the wave of intrigue surrounding the match where neither points nor advantage points will be scored, the black belt Eddie Bravo, a student of the Machados’ from way back, brought up the way in which his teacher Jean Jacques overcame the lack of fingers on his left hand, living and touching proof of the adaptability so characteristic of Jiu-Jitsu.

“For those who don’t know, my master Jean Jaques Machado has no fingers on his left hand. That’s why his overhook is the best in all of Jiu-Jitsu. No one comes even close to his overhook. If he had fingers, he’d be grabbing the gi just like everyone else. Because he had no fingers he couldn’t grab anyone sleeve; he had to overhook everything. Over the years, he developed an Olympic wrestling overhook,” says Bravo in the following video.

“That’s why in Abu Dhabi, when everyone was trying to figure out what to do with the No-Gi game, we had all these legends in Jiu-Jitsu who were masters of passing guard and finishing, but they didn’t know what to do without the handles, and they were going up against all these wrestlers who were masters of controlling bodies without handles, but they didn’t know how to pass guard or finish. […] epic battles of nothing going on […] a sleeping pill. And then Jean Jaques came along and crushed everybody, finished everybody,” he elaborates.

Entre as atrações do Metamoris Pro, no dia 14 em San Diego, está a presença do professor Jean Jaques Machado contra Nelson Monteiro, numa luta de 20 minutos dois antigos ídolos do Jiu-Jitsu em Abu Dhabi.

No embalo da luta sem pontos ou vantagens, o faixa-preta Eddie Bravo, pupilo dos Machados, decidiu lembrar como Jean Jacques supera a falta dos dedos da mão esquerda, numa prova viva e emocionante da eficiência e da capacidade de se adaptar próprias do Jiu-Jitsu.

“Para quem não sabe, meu mestre Jean Jaques Machado não tem dedos na mão esquerda. É por isso que seu overhook (movimento de laçar o braço adversário com seu braço por cima) é o melhor de todo Jiu-Jitsu. Ninguém chega nem perto dele nesse quesito. Se ele tivesse dedos, ele faria pegadas no pano igual a todo mundo. Por não poder pegar nas mangas, desenvolveu este estilo particular, um overhook de luta olímpica”, diz Bravo, no vídeo a seguir.

“É por isso que em Abu Dhabi, nos ADCCs, quando todo mundo estava tentando descobrir como lutar sem kimono, vimos algumas batalhas contra wrestlers onde nada acontecia, verdadeiros soníferos muitas vezes. Foi quando Jean Jaques entrou em cena e arrasou com todos”, discursa Bravo.

GRACIEMAG.com: O Metamoris Pro do dia 14, em San Diego, escalou você e Otavio Sousa para uma das lutas, sem pontos ou vantagens, com duração de 20 minutos. Seus treinos mudaram com tais regras?

KRON GRACIE: Nada, os treinos estão como sempre. Estou treinando duro com meu time aqui na academia. Está tudo perfeito. Luto preocupado em finalizar, sem pensar em pontos ou tempo, então não mudou muito. Apenas estou treinando forte, pois a luta será difícil. Tenho treinado revezando os alunos aqui do time, tem o Patrick, que pegou a faixa-preta faz pouco tempo e outros alunos muito duros, que estão me dando uma força também.

Você se machucou no Mundial 2012. Como está o joelho?

Está 110%! Estou mais do que pronto para a guerra, só esperando o dia chegar.

Que orientações seu pai Rickson deu em relação às novas regras?

Ele fez algumas recomendações especiais, mas isso eu ainda não posso te falar, né? (Risos) Ele vai estar lá no meu córner no dia 14 também. Na verdade eu sempre tenho a ajuda do meu pai, seja aqui na academia ou por telefone quando ele está no Brasil ou viajando.

Como você encara esse formato de luta sem pontos?

Para mim é quase um sonho, estou ansioso para ver como a coisa flui. Acho que estou mais à vontade pois vou ter mais tempo para fazer o meu trabalho. Certamente estou um pouco mais feliz, vamos ter um pouco mais de tempo para ver quem é o melhor lutador.

As regras então são boas para o esporte e os fãs de Jiu-Jitsu?

Isso acredito que a gente vai ver mesmo depois do evento. Como o André Galvão disse a você, o importante é o lutador não entrar apenas para empatar. Essa regra é perfeita para você partir para o ataque para ganhar a luta. Isso é importante, querer vencer a luta. Se os atletas entrarem buscando a vitória, e não apenas irem lá para empatar e não perder, o evento será muito maneiro. Caso contrário, podem ser 20 minutos muito chatos.

O que você acha do Otavio Sousa como oponente?

O Otavio é o atual campeão mundial dos médios e acho ele um cara bem duro. Ele me deu uma chance de lutar contra ele, então me sinto honrado de lutar contra o campeão. Vamos ver no dia quem sai vencedor.

Como você vê o panorama do Jiu-Jitsu hoje nos campeonatos?

Na minha opinião, está caindo. Acho que o Jiu-Jitsu está piorando, hoje vemos faixas-azuis, roxas, com a visão de que Jiu-Jitsu é pegar na manga e tentar essas raspadinhas… Acho que eles perdem tempo com isso e o esporte piora com esse tipo de jogo. Mas ninguém tem o controle sobre isso, nem eu, só posso fazer o meu melhor para que o Jiu-Jitsu siga em frente, para o alto. Acho que hoje o praticante iniciante precisa se inspirar no que é o Jiu-Jitsu como um todo, e não no Jiu-Jitsu esportivo somente. Quero fazer essa luta no Metamoris para os fãs verem o verdadeiro Jiu-Jitsu.

Como você vê o futuro do Jiu-Jitsu de competição?

No futuro, espero que tenham mais eventos como o Metamoris, eventos capazes de deixarem o lutador mais à vontade para se expressar, e mais interessantes para o público ver. Acredito que é assim que o Jiu-Jitsu vai chegar à TV, e vai chegar ao nível olímpico. O caminho é esse, e não com as lutas amarradas como hoje em dia. Acho que no Jiu-Jitsu deve haver ainda mais regras contra a amarração. Veja o judô, não se pode parar, não se pode fazer algumas coisas.

Como é treinar duro e administrar a academia?

Acho que é como ter dois empregos. É um pouco difícil, precisamos fazer tudo na academia e também treinar não apenas para lutar, mas para tentar ser o melhor. Eu tento fazer o que eu posso, da melhor forma. Quando é possível, é possível. Hoje estou com foco no treino, mas já já volto o foco para treinar os alunos e para investir no negócio.

O André Galvão te elogiou aqui no GRACIEMAG.com, como um cara que bota a cara nos campeonatos. O que achou?

Ele é um cara muito gente boa a quem respeito muito. Acho que quando a gente percebe que existem caras parecidos com você, caras que estão atrás da mesma coisa que você, isso gera naturalmente um respeito mútuo, mesmo sendo adversários no tatame. Ele, assim como outros, é um guerreiro que está no Jiu-Jitsu para ganhar sempre. Respeito muito ele e outros caras de ponta, como o Marcelo Garcia, Roger, Rodolfo e outos.

Você pensa em abraçar o MMA um dia?

Claro, isso está na minha cabeça certamente! Adoro competir, adoro representar o Jiu-Jitsu e meu time. Deixa apenas eu ter condição de focar nisso que vai acontecer, podem apostar.

GRACIEMAG.com: The promoters of Metamoris Pro, coming up on the 14th in San Diego, California, matched you up against Otavio Sousa in one of the no-points, 20-minute bouts on the card. Have you changed the way you train at all because of the rules?

KRON GRACIE: Not at all. I’m training the same as I always do. I’m training hard with my team here at the academy. Everything’s perfect. I fight targeting the finish, without thinking about points or time, so nothing has changed. I’m just training really hard because it’ll be a tough match. I’m rotating through the students on the team. There’s Patrick, who just got his black belt not long ago, and other really tough students who are helping me out too.

You got injured at the 2012 Worlds. How’s your knee?

It’s 110%. I’m as ready for war as can be. I’m just waiting for time to come.

What guidance has your father, Rickson, offered you about the new rules?

He’s made some special recommendations, but I can’t reveal them to you, can I (laughs)? He’ll be there in my corner on the 14th. Truth is, I always have my dad helping me, whether at the academy or over the phone when he’s in Brazil or traveling.

What are your thoughts on this no-points format?

To me it’s like a dream. I’m anxious to see how things flow. I think I’ll be a lot more at ease, since I’ll have time to work. I’m certainly a bit happier that we’ll have a bit more time to see who’s the better fighter.

Are the rules good for the sport and Jiu-Jitsu fans?

I think we’ll find that out after the event. As André Galvão told you, what’s important is that the fighters don’t go in there just trying for the draw. The rules are perfect for you to go on the attack and win the fight. That’s what’s important—wanting to win the fight. If the athletes are going for victory, and not just aiming to tie or not lose, the event will be really cool. Otherwise, it could be a boring 20 minutes.

What do you think of Otavio Sousa as an opponent?

Otavio is the current world middleweight champion and I think he’s really tough. He gave me a chance to face him, so I’m honored to fight the champion. Let’s see who wins.

What’s your angle on the current Jiu-Jitsu-tournament panorama?

In my opinion, it’s on the decline. I feel Jiu-Jitsu is getting worse. These days we see blue and purple belts who think Jiu-Jitsu’s all about grabbing the sleeve and trying those little sweeps… I feel they lose time with all that and the sport is getting worse with that kind of game. But no one can control that—not me; I can only do my best to see that Jiu-Jitsu keeps moving forward, upward. I feel beginners these days need to get inspired by Jiu-Jitsu as a whole, not just sport Jiu-Jitsu. I want to do this match at Metamoris so fans can see the real Jiu-Jitsu.

How do you see the future of competition Jiu-Jitsu?

In the future, I hope there’ll be more events like Metamoris, events that can make the fighters comfortable to express themselves and that are more interesting for the crowd to watch. I feel that that’s how Jiu-Jitsu will make it to TV and to an Olympic level. That’s the path, and not through the stalled matches we’re seeing these days. I feel there should be more rules against stalling in Jiu-Jitsu. Look at judo—you can’t stop, can’t do certain things.

What’s it like to train hard while managing an academy?

I feel it’s like having two jobs. It’s kind of hard; you have to do everything at the academy and still train not just to fight, but to try and be at your best. I try doing what I can as best I can. When it’s possible, it’s possible. Today I’m focused on training, but soon my focus will be back on training my students and investing in the business.

André Galvão had some kind words about you here on GRACIEMAG.com, saying you stick your neck out at championships. What did you think of that?

He’s a great guy who I respect a lot. I feel that when we realize there are guys out there like us, guys who are going after the same thing you are, that naturally generates mutual respect, even if you’re opponents on the mat. He, like the others, is a warrior who is always in Jiu-Jitsu to win it. I respect him and other top guys, like Marcelo Garcia, Roger, Rodolfo and others.

Do you ever think of doing MMA?

Of course, that’s certainly on my mind. I love competing, love representing Jiu-Jitsu and my team. Just let me get to a point where I can focus on that and it’ll happen. You can count on it.
