The Dallas Open took place last weekend and had Jared Dopp as the big winner of the gi section, while Gabriel Marangoni stood out without the gi.

Gi

A black-belt under Rafael Lovato Jr., Dopp won half of his double gold in a super-heavyweight final versus Jimmy Lugo. In the open division, it came down to him and middleweight champ De’Alonzio Jackson, and Dopp again succeeded. Gabriel Marangoni, meanwhile, became featherweight gi champion, but it was in the no-gi section that he really shone.

No-gi

Much lighter than his competition, he beat medium heavyweight champion Samuel Snow in the absolute final. Also worth pointing out is the performance of Lucas Pinheiro, of AMBJJ, who beat both light featherweight fields and took bronze in the gi absolute division.

O casca-grossa faturou o duplo ouro na competição ao bater a fera Jard Dopp (Ribeiro JJ) na final do pesadíssimo e após a desistência de Inácio Neto (Gracie Barra) que se lesionou e não pode fazer a final do aberto, deixando o caminho livre para Aly garantir o topo do pódio.

The brown belt division is know for reserving some serious thrills to whoever pays attention to the upcoming talents featured there.

Here’s another great example of that, when Mahamed Aly and Jared Dopp met in the first round of the ultra-heavyweight division.

Mahamed is the current brown belt open class world champion and Jared, a no-gi world champion himself, just returned from a silver-medal campaign at the +99kg division of the 2015 ADCC.

Aly called it the “best no-gi match of his entire career”.

Dopp was not happy with the final outcome.

This was their second encounter in Dallas.

Saturday, in the gi, Dopp beat Mahamed with a last minute takedown (click here to watch).

João Miyao at the 2015 Worlds

The ADCC announced today the final name added the roster of athletes for the event that takes place August 29-30, in São Paulo, Brazil.

Jared Dopp was invited to complete the +99kg division.

The roster would be complete with the addition of Dopp, but along with the new name came the news of a drop out.

In the -66kg division, João Miyao won’t be competing.

The ADCC did not release the reason why Miyao is out of the competition and also is yet to confirm the name of his substitute.

With that, there’s only one spot left for the 2015 ADCC.

The blue belt males opened up the first day of the 2013 No-Gi World Championship on Saturday, Nov. 2 as they do at most tournaments. With ten mats spread throughout the Long Beach Walter Pyramid, main stage the matches unfolded with new divisions added into the mix often. The brackets circulated giving athletes a break in between each match and time for many different shapes, ages and sizes to take on their opponents at the same time.

The open class divisions were fought at the end of the day with the athletes giving everything they have left from the long hours of matches. For the blue belts, Caio Terra’s lightweight student Benjamin Silva won the open weight gold to match the gold he earned in his division. A total of nine matches for him, six of them ended in submissions. Since moving to Caio’s gym and being persuaded to move down to the lightweight division from middleweight, his tournament results have skyrocketed. His training partners have become family at GMA Institute of Martial Arts and the advice Caio has given him paid off: “Stick with plan A and don’t worry about plan B until it happens. Go out there and play your game, don’t worry about names and what they’re doing.” The blue belt female division was won by Tara White who trains under GMA member Andre Galvao. She fought Virginia Perez from Cyborg’s GMA Fight Sports.

The open class for the male purple belts lasted the longest with many names in the bracket who could have topped the podium. Narrowing down to the last matches, both small and large competitors were still working towards the goal. In the final, Isaque Bahiense faced Gerard Dany that was decided by points. From the start of the match, Gerard’s large frame was in control of Isaque, nearly taking his back. Isaque defended the second hook avoiding the hooks and was able to escape the dangerous position but was put in the same situation once more. After turning to put his back on the back and end up in bottom half-guard, a good bridge gave him the momentum to come on top, sweeping to earn two points in the last twenty seconds and winning the division. The purple belt females came down to their final with matches that ended in mostly submissions by the eventual winner. Amanda Santana from Marcio Cruz BJJ submitted her way to the gold with an armbar submission in the final to end her day with double gold.
