O Santa Cruz BJJ Pro teve um dia de gala nesse sábado, 28 de agosto, na Califórnia. João Miyao, Leandro Lo, Thiago Silva e James Puopolo foram os campeões das quatro divisões da faixa-preta. Os campeões levaram 4 mil dólares para casa.

Na final dos plumas, João venceu o veterano Gabriel Moraes (Alliance). Leandro Lo, da Cícero Costha, estrangulou Julian Marquez na meia-guarda na final dos médios.

Thiago Silva, da Checkmat, venceu Lucas Rocha na final dos pesados por decisão dos juízes.

James Puopolo venceu o pesadíssimo, após finalizar Tanner Rice no leglock.

No absoluto feminino, Chelsea Donner foi a grande campeã, ao vencer Amanda Loewen na final.

O faixa-preta James Puopolo se deu bem no pesadíssimo e no absoluto no Nacional Americano, iniciado nesta sexta 10 de julho em Las Vegas. Na final do aberto, James venceu Eliot Kelly (Yemaso).

João Miyao (Cícero Costha) manteve o bom desempenho e voltou a vencer no pluma. Já Paulo Miyao (Cícero Costha), seu irmão, ficou com a vitória nos penas. O leve teve Marcus Cole (Grappling Unlimited) como campeão.

No médio, Darragh O’ Canaill (Ribeiro) ficou no lugar mais alto do pódio. Inácio Ferreira (Gracie Barra) dominou o pesado, enquanto Guybson Sá (SAS) liderou o superpesado.

Neste sábado, 11 de julho, ainda ocorre o torneio de kimono do Nacional Americano, em Las Vegas, com direito a uma superluta entre Xande Ribeiro e Marcio Pé de Pano.

Ontem, Roger Gracie retornou em superluta contra Rodrigo Comprido e finalizou no braço aos 4min25s, após montar.

Other than the super-match between Roger Gracie and Rodrigo Comprido, day 1 of the American Nationals also featured the most important no-gi divisions.

Both male and female black belt open class champions were crowned.

James Puopolo defeated Eliot Kelly for the gold medal while Sarah Black beat Amanda Loewen for the absolute title.

Other than the open class divisions, the weight categories also had thrilling matches.

Brothers João Miyao (light-feather) and Paulo Miyao (feather) topped their divisions.

Guybson Sá (super-heavy), Inácio Neto (heavy) and Darragh O Conaill (middle) also walked out of the UFC Fan Expo with their gold medals.

In the teams competition, Gracie Barra won the main trophy with 218pts.

Zenith BJJ (72pts) and Carlson Gracie Team (62pts) completed the podium.

Day 2 this Saturday will feature the Gi divisions and the kids divisions as well.

GMA member Rafael Lovato Jr. of Lovato’s School of BJJ in Oklahoma City, OK will be in Oregon on the first of March to teach a seminar. The event will take place at his student James Puopolo’s school, Salem-Keizer Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Academy.

Currently teaching seminars in Australia, the black belt world champion will make his way over to the west coast prior to the Pan Jiu-Jitsu Championship.

Nas quartas de final do superpesado, o faixa-preta da GFTeam encarou a guarda do grandalhão James Puopolo, que tentou desequilibrar o carioca algumas vezes.

Depois de algumas tentativas de raspagens e botes, James não suportou o ímpeto de Vieira.

Com pegadas firmes na manga e o quadril justíssimo, o carioca cruzou o joelho e montou direto. Na posição dominante, a montada, Rodolfo tratou de grampear as costas e finalizar no estrangulamento.

On Nov. 19 Metamoris released ten names in the running to be the fill-in for an injured Kevin Casey on the Metamoris 5 card on Nov. 22 opposite Vinny Magalhaes.

The ADCC champion Magalhaes needed a replacement for his match and the organizers of Metamoris made an open invitation to not only offer the chance to go against Magalhaes but also $10,000 if the replacement submits him in the submission-only match.

The organization narrowed the contenders down to a final ten with the votes determined by Facebook likes, shares and comments. Even though the final amount of votes went to Jeremy Arel, Matheus Diniz was chosen to be the replacement with James Puopolo also in close running.

Ralek Gracie released this statement as the reason for choosing Matheus over Jeremy:

“This turned out to be a very tough decision and the public participation was crucial in helping us narrow down the top applicants, however, the number of “likes” was never intended to be the only factor in our final decision. There was a lot to consider but the difference for us was Diniz’s level of recent competition activity and being that his instructor is Marcelo Garcia (who he trains with daily) that’s a big endorsement for his ability to perform under pressure against Vinny. If Jeremy had been training with his instructor (Gordo) every day in Brazil for the last 6 months we probably would have chosen him. Vinny tapped Galvao, Buchecha and came very “close” to catching Keenan at M4 with his infamous heelhooks. Diniz has his work cut out for him as the underdog in this match and it’s going to be very exciting to see what happens.”

Matheus is currently a brown belt under Marcelo Garcia in New York City. He won the brown belt no-gi world title and the pan no-gi title twice in the last two years. Definitely an underdog in this match-up, he hopes to both surprise and represent:

“I know the odds are against me because I was a last-minute replacement and wasn’t given as much time to prepare as my opponent but I am always training; this is my lifestyle. So things wouldn’t have changed if I got the opportunity earlier or three months ago. I respect Vinny Magalhaes as he’s been a top black belt since I started training. But that is why I’m more excited to have this chance. I hope to make it a big show and surprise the Jiu-Jitsu community. I also want to show the proof of Marcelo’s mentoring.”

Another first this weekend for the IBJJF was the Seattle Open held at Everett Community College. This was the first opportunity for those in the Northwest to experience an IBJJF tournament in their own backyard.

The overall team scores were as follows:

1 – Gracie Barra – 247
2 – Lovato Jiu-Jitsu – 114
3 – SBG International (SBGI) – 109

In the male black belt light-featherweight category, Milton Bastos earned the gold after defeating his opponent Thiago Goncalves.

The featherweight division title was earned by Wellington “Megaton” Dias after he won over Gustavo Carpio.

Lightweight gold went to Jason Palacios who defeated Zach Adamson.

Luis Rosa took on Cleves de Matos to earn the middleweight title.

James Puopolo defeated Larry King for the ultra-heavyweight gold.

James also earned the double gold of the day having conquered the open class as well.

At the 2014 Boston Summer Open, a majority of the black belts met in the absolute. Since some of the divisions did not have opponents, most of the lone athletes entered the open weight no matter the pounds they weighed on the scale.

For the males, the winner was Rafael Formiga Barbosa of Soul Fighters who swept and submitted his way to the gold. For the ladies, the crowd was offered a chance to watch black belt females where new black belt Nathalia Amaral of BTT Boston won the gold.

Here is how each division unfolded:

MALES

Light-feather: Daniel Beleza had no one else in his division and took the gold.

Feather: Gianni Grippo defeated Edson Oliveira by 8-6 points for the gold.

Light: Renan Borges had no one else in his division and took the gold.

Middle: Rafael Formiga Barbosa defeated Vinicius Silva by a quick straight armbar for the gold.

Medium-Heavy: Daniel Simmler defeated Raphael Fischetti by DQ.
Simmler then defeated John Diggins by foot lock.

Heavy: Carlos Robson Gracie had no one else in his division and took the gold.

Ultra-heavy: James Puopolo defeated Paulo Martins by kneebar for the gold.

FEMALES

Light-feather: Marcelo Lawton, who placed second place at the 2014 World Championship had no one else in her division and took the gold.

Medium-heavy: Nathalia Amaral, who was recently awarded her black belt, had no one else in her division and took the gold.

OPEN WEIGHT

The matches for the male open weight were as follows:

John Diggins defeated Vinicius Silva by 4-0 points.
Renan Borges defeated Robson Gracie by 14-2 points.
Rafael Formiga defeated Dan Simmler by clock choke.
James Puopolo defeated Paulo Martins by choke from the back.
Gianni Grippo defeated John Diggins by 6-0 points.
Rafael Formiga defeated James Puopolo by 6-4 points.
Renan Borges defeated Gianni Grippo by referee decision.
Rafael Formiga defeated Renan Borges by armbar for the gold.

The female match was between Nathalia Amaral and Marcela Lawton. The final score was 19-0 and this was Nathalia’s first black belt match.
