While in the Masters & Seniors the seasoned old black belts, like Helvécio Penna, Osiris and Adimilson Brites, put on a show, in the adult division the young guns in the Rio Open went to war in the absolute.

The big standout was Ricardo Evangelista, who won the absolute after closing out with Igor Silva. The GFTeam heavyweight made it to the final after getting past a game Leandro Lo, a lightweight with a slick guard. Now Igor Silva had three matches in the absolute and took home the silver.

The black belts took to the mats yesterday in the International Masters and Seniors tourney, held at the traditional Tijuca Tennis Club venue. And the big winners on the day were the famed adult champions of the past, proving how the old war horses still have fuel to burn.

The famous black belt and master is just one of the perks featured at the ten-day training camp from August 1 to 10 in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

The camp is meant for practitioners wishing to take their Jiu-Jitsu and/or MMA skills to the next level with world class instructors endowed with international experience teaching and fighting, in the birth place of modern day Jiu-Jitsu and MMA.

Located at a quiet corner away from the hustle and bustle of the city to allow for complete focus on the task of personal betterment, the camp will provide both high-quality training and reposeful leisure.

Food, housing, training and local transportation over the camp’s ten-day and nine-night duration for a price of 2,000 dollars.

Etched between the end of the Rio Open tournment and UFC Rio, the program kicks off August 1, ends on the 10th, and is open to students from all teams and of all levels of proficiency.

According to the CBJJ (Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Confederation), sign-ups for the International Masters and Seniors and Rio Open tournaments have now been extended to July 11.

Should there be an error in registration, whether a typo by the CBJJ or a name not mentioned on the list, an email should be sent to cbjj@ibjjf.com by July 15 at 5pm Brazilian time.

The overall check will take place July 18 (Monday). Brackets will be made available on Friday, July 19, on the CBJJ website.

The Jiu-Jitsu World Championship, the biggest event of the IBJJF season, is now in the past. However, anyone thinking the governing body’s international calendar is at a standstill couldn’t be more wrong. The events known as Open Championships are picking up steam and won’t let the competitive flame go out in those who like donning the gi for some healthy competition.

The next one coming up, for example, is the Rio International Open from July 21 to 24 in Brazil, an event running concurrently to the traditional International Masters and Seniors.

Outside Brazil and the United States Open tournaments are gaining momentum too. On October 1 and 2, for instance, the London International Open is coming up, as announced by IBJJF kingpin Marcelo Siriema.

The most important city in England, a major cosmopolitan metropolis brimming with culture and among the biggest financial centers on the planet, London is a hotbed for sport too, whether for the upcoming 2012 Olympic Games or now for Jiu-Jitsu.

Some of top teams will be there, like our GMAs Gracie Barra London Bridge, led by black belt Eduardo Carriello, and Roger Gracie Academy, run by three-time absolute world champion Roger.

Alongside other winners, like Mario Melio, Diego Alemão and Domini, Marcelo Dourado is a Jiu-Jitsu practitioner who took the big money prize for winning the TV show with the biggest audience in Brazil, “Big Brother Brazil”.

But, compared to the other reality show champions, Dourado is the one with the greatest involvement in fighting, having made a few professional appearances in MMA. He is even studying an offer to have yet another fight. However, for now all Dourado is thinking about is the gentle art, as he told television reporter Paula Sack on Brazilian TV.

“Jiu-Jitsu is what brought me back after Big Brother Brazil. It is what got me back to a normal routine of eating, resting and training properly,” he commented.

“I received an offer to have another MMA fight, but first I want to get in on the Jiu-Jitsu circuit, be in some events around Rio de Janeiro – there’s the International (Masters and Seniors) coming up,” he said.

That being the case, perhaps we’ll see the celebrity practitioner at the International Master in Rio?
