The GRACIEMAG at the Pan Blog already spread the word on some of the non-Brazilian talent looking good to wreak some havoc at the 2011 Pan in all belt groups.

At black belt, specifically, some wicked American submission whizzes are confirmed on the IBJJF website. It’s worth heeding the fact that sign-ups end this Wednesday, so don’t miss out on the fun, sign up here.

O Blog GRACIEMAG no Pan já adiantou que muitos atletas de fora do Brasil devem fazer bonito no Pan 2011, em todas as graduações.

Na faixa-preta, especificamente, algumas feras americanas já estão confirmadas no site da IBJJF. Vale lembrar que as inscrições terminam nesta quarta-feira, então não perca a oportunidade de participar dessa festa, inscreva-se aqui.

GRACIEMAG.com showed up at Rio de Janeiro’s Benjamin Constant Institute, an institution specialized in the education of the visually impaired, this Tuesday, to check out the end-of-the-year training session at Felipe Costa’s project for needy visually-impaired children. At the edge of the mat, family members and guests watched on prideful, as the 20 kids practiced.

This year, thanks to donors, the children received gift packages including food, sneakers, shorts, T-shirts, flip-flops and, to everyone’s joy, two gis each.

If the presents were not enough, the kids also received a special visit from an actor famous in Brazil, Raul Gazolla, who also happens to be a Rodrigo Comprido black belt. Gazolla enjoyed teaching and training with the kids, even feeling the pressure when green belt Dudu, twice winner of the Copa America, had him in side control.

After training came the most anticipated moment of all, promotions and gift giving. Felipe Costa, Michelle Matta, João Marcelo and Muzio De Angelis spoke of the effort and dedication each of the athletes had exhibited. But Gazolla was the one most touched:

“I was really impressed with your level of technique. Regardless of any challenge, no one can take from us something God gives us, which is our inner strength. Imagine what you want, and you shall achieve it. I started training Jiu-Jitsu at 36 and now I’m 54, and it was one of the best things that happened in my life. It helped me in all respects, physically, emotionally and spiritually. Jiu-Jitsu will only bring you good things, so never give up. Congratulations to all and thank you so much,” said Gazolla to applause.

Michelle promotes little Caleb

In all, ten children were promoted. The talent and skill in the Gentle Art each possessed was apparent. White belt Caleb, upon receiving his belt, was congratulated not just for his Jiu-Jitsu ability, but mainly for his being an exemplary student on and off the mat. Timidly, the tiny athlete broke a broad smile. “I’m feeling better now because of Jiu-Jitsu. I haven’t competed yet, but I want to soon,” he told GRACIEMAG.com.

During the promotion ceremony, volunteer João Marcelo, then a purple belt, was caught by surprise. “I want to tell all of you that João is the soul of the project. He is the one who holds fort oftentimes when neither Michelle nor I can be here. So we of Brasa team decided to promote you, João, to brown belt,” said Felipe Costa. The newly-promoted brown belt fought to hold back his tears.

The only female in the group, Dalila Serpa, drew attention not just for her gender, but mainly for her firm grip and tight guard. Besides practicing Jiu-Jitsu and judo, she is a composer and singer.

In the beginning, when she went to train Jiu-Jitsu elsewhere, Dalila hit an obstacle well known to the visually impaired, which she mentioned candidly. “When I showed up to train, I realized people were afraid to train with me for not knowing how to act,” said Dalila.

Was she bothered? “Of course not. I made a point of showing each of them I was capable of training with everyone there. After that they realized there was no reason to treat me any differently,” she said.

At the end of the session, a civil servant who watched the proceedings remarked to the reporter, “The size of the mountain doesn’t matter, it can never block out the sun; and that’s just what I saw here today. All these children represent the sun that shines under any circumstances.”

GRACIEMAG.com esteve presente na tarde dessa terça-feira no Instituto Benjamin Constant, para acompanhar o treino de Jiu-Jitsu de final de ano da criançada deficiente visual. Do lado de fora do dojô, familiares e convidados olhavam orgulhosos os 20 atletas do projeto.

Este ano, graças aos doadores, as crianças receberam uma cesta recheada de presente.  Além dos alimentos, cada um deles ganhou um tênis, uma bermuda, uma camisa, um chinelo e, para vibração geral, dois kimonos.

Não bastasse todos os presentes recebidos, as crianças tiveram um ilustre convidado entre eles, o ator e faixa-preta de Jiu-Jitsu Raul Gazolla. Faixa-preta de Rodrigo Comprido, Gazolla se divertia com cada uma das crianças. Ora ensinava posições, como raspagens, dando pequenas dicas ao pé do ouvido, ora sentia a pressão da molecada no cem-quilos, como fez com o faixa-verde Dudu, campeão duas vezes na Copa América de Jiu-Jitsu.

E era chegado o momento mais aguardado por todos eles, a graduação e a entrega dos presentes. Felipe Costa, Michelle Matta, João Marcelo e Muzio De Angelis falaram do esforço e dedicação de cada um dos atletas. Mas foi Gazolla  o que mais se emocionou:

“Fiquei muito bem impressionado com o nível técnico de vocês. Independente de qualquer deficiência que vocês tenham, ninguém tira de nós uma coisa que Deus nos dá, que é nossa força interior. Pessoal, basta mentalizar. O ser humano tem uma força enorme dentro de si. Mentalizem o que vocês quiserem, e irão conseguir. Eu comecei a treinar Jiu-Jitsu com 36 anos e hoje estou com 54, e essa foi uma das melhores coisas que aconteceu na minha vida. Me ajudou em todos aspectos, fisicamente, emocionalmente e espiritualmente. O Jiu-Jitsu só vai trazer coisas boas a vocês, então nunca desistam. Parabéns a todos vocês e muito obrigado”, disse Gazolla debaixo de aplausos.

Ao todo, dez crianças foram graduadas. E não foi difícil perceber rapidamente o talento e habilidade de cada um deles para a arte suave. O faixa-branca Caleb, ao receber sua faixa, foi parabenizado não só pelo dom para a arte suave, mas principalmente por ser criança exemplar dentro e fora do dojô. Tímido, o pequerrucho exibia um imenso sorriso no rosto.  “Estou me sentindo bem melhor agora com o Jiu-Jitsu. Ainda não competi, mas quero lutar em breve”, disse ao GRACIEMAG.com.

No meio da graduação, quem foi pego de surpresa foi o voluntário João Marcelo, então faixa-roxa. “Quero dizer a todos vocês que o João é a alma deste projeto. Pois é ele quem segura todas as pontas enquanto muitas vezes nem eu nem a Michelle podemos estar presentes. Então nós da equipe Brasa decidimos graduar você, João, faixa-marrom”, disse Felipe Costa. O mais novo faixa-marrom da praça teve que segurar as lágrimas ao ouvir sobre o projeto.

E havia mais gente interessante no treino. Dalila Serpa, chamava atenção, não só por ser a única mulher do grupo, mas principalmente pela pegada justa e guarda fechada. E se engana quem acha que ela só leva jeito para o Jiu-Jitsu. Além de praticante da arte suave e judô, ela é compositora e cantora.

No começo, quando foi treinar Jiu-Jitsu em outro local, ela encontrou um obstáculo conhecido no dia-a-dia dos deficientes, quem nem é precioso mencionar. “Quando eu cheguei para treinar lá, vi que as pessoas estavam com medo de treinar comigo por não saberem como agir com um deficiente”, disse Dalila.

Ela ficou chateada? “Claro que não. Fiz sim questão de mostrar a cada um deles que eu era capaz de treinar com todo mundo ali. Aí depois eles viram que não tinham porque me tratar diferente”, disse.

Ao final do treino, uma servidora pública que a tudo assistia comentou com o repórter.

“Não importa o tamanho da montanha, ela não pode tapar o sol. E foi exatamente o que vi aqui hoje. Todas essas crianças representam o sol que brilha em qualquer circunstância”.

Professor João Marcelo assays the three years of work, stating much progress with the children has been made.

“We increased the training load and class is packed with students. We managed four gold medals and now on the 12^th the kids will compete at the Jiu-Jitsu Copa America, organized by Abi-Rihan.

“The group has become ever-more united. But the principal progress was made in their character. The ones who noted this change are their teachers at Benjamin Constant Institute. Beyond that, they are treating their teachers and classmates better,” he reports.

The New Year’s resolutions for the program organizers include the elaboration of teaching material, as João Marcelo explains, “In the texts we tell a bit about Jiu-Jitsu’s origins, the history of the families that developed it and we explain tournament point scoring. All that for them to not get caught up only in practice so they can start citing some theory.”

As with in 2008, one of the program’s teachers, Michelle Matta, requests that anyone with the means to do so contribute to the project. Several students will be promoted at the Christmas get-together.
