Atual campeão brasileiro e sul-americano dos galos, Igor Rodrigues é mais um faixa-preta de Jiu-Jitsu que quer se destacar ainda mais em 2013.

Para tal, no entanto, o lutador da CheckMat nascido no paraíso de Búzios não sonha apenas com mais medalhas. Ele quer garantir um futuro mais sorridente para diversos alunos, jovens e crianças que vestem o kimono em sua academia. “Temos aqui em Búzios de 200 a 250 pessoas treinando diariamente. São crianças, jovens e adultos que já colecionam muitos títulos. A proposta do projeto é a inclusão social dessas pessoas, afinal para muitos aqui nosso projeto é a luz no fim do túnel. Sempre busco parceiros para me ajudar. Um simples olhar desses alunos me retribui tudo que faço, então espero um dia ver todos bem. Ao contrário do que muitos pensam, Búzios tem muita gente sofrida”, completou o faixa-preta.

Para provar que entende tudo sobre inverter e mudar a perspectiva dos alunos, Igor nos mandou uma raspagem que tem funcionado muito para ele.

Current roosterweight champion of Brazil and South America Igor Rodrigues is another black belt who wants to stand out even more in 2013.

To do so, the CheckMat representative from the paradisiacal town of Buzios isn’t just dreaming of more medals. He wants to assure a happier future for a number of the students, young people and children who sport gis to train at his academy. “Here in Buzios we have 200 to 250 people training every day. They’re children, teenagers and adults who share a bunch of titles between them. The idea behind the project is to bring these people into society. After all, to a lot of people our project is the light at the end of the tunnel. I’m always looking for partners to help me out. A simple look from these students rewards me for everything I do, so one day I hope to see everyone doing well. Contrary to popular belief, there are a lot of people suffering in Buzios,” added the black belt.

To prove he understands all there is to know about turning things around and changing his students’ perspective, Igor sent us in this sweep that’s been working out for him a lot.

Diminutive, black belts, Jiu-Jitsu champions–what else do Igor Rordigues and Rayfan Barbosa have in common?

Both won gold at the South American Jiu-Jitsu Championship. After coming up with their hard-fought medals, they interviewed each other at GRACIEMAG.com’s request.

Igor, a CheckMat representative hailing from the town of Buzios, won the roosterweight division. Rayfan, an Associação Monteiro Jiu-Jitsu black belt, judo expert and las student from Manaus, took the light featherweight title at last weekend’s tournament.

IGOR RODRIGUES: What’s up, Rayfan? How did your campaign at the 2012 South American Championship, and what did you learn?

RAYFAN BARBOSA: I learned that the CBJJ South American Championship is a high-level competition, just like the Brazilian Nationals. This year there were a bunch of renowned athletes, and each year it gets tougher. To paint you a picture, of my three matches, in the semifinal I faced a world champion; in final a South American champion! It was an excellent experience.

IGOR: That’s right, it was rough. I wasn’t in my best shape. I had a motorcycle accident that kept me from training properly, nearly broke my foot… And which was your toughest match?

RAYFAN: The final, against Leandro Martins, I think. But all my opponents were exceptional too. But as I’m also a judoka–I was champion of Brazil in 2009 and runner-up in 2012–, I realized Leandro’s game mas similar to mine: get the takedown and pass. So I used judo to get the throw, and I did a more compact ground game, without leaving much wriggle room. He’s a really strong athlete, so I had to be careful with his shots. What about you? How did your final with Marcos Franco of Gracie Barra go?

IGOR: I went all out early on and got the sense that he got a bit lost. That’s when I found an opening to get him with the keylock.

RAYFAN: Well done. So that’s it, GRACIEMAG.com readers. Levinhos, faixa-pretas, campeões de Jiu-Jitsu. O que mais Igor Rodrigues e Rayfan Barbosa tem em comum?

Ambos beliscaram o ouro no Sul-Americano de Jiu-Jitsu. Depois da medalhinha suada, bateram um papo a pedido do GRACIEMAG.com.

Igor, atleta da CheckMat e natural de Búzios, venceu o peso-galo. Rayfan (Associação Monteiro), faixa-preta de Manaus, judoca cascudo e estudante de Direito, ficou com o título no peso-pluma, no torneio realizado em Floripa, no fim de semana.

IGOR RODRIGUES: Beleza Rayfan? Como foi sua campanha no Sul-Americano 2012 e o que aprendeu?

RAYFAN BARBOSA: Vi que o Sul-Americano da CBJJ é uma competição de alto nível, assim como o Brasileiro. Neste ano o campeonato reuniu vários atletas de renomes e a cada ano vai se tornando mais dificil. Fiz três lutas, para você ver: na semifinal, um campeão mundial, na final, um campeão sul-americano! Foi uma excelente experiência.

IGOR: Pois é, parada dura. Eu não estava no melhor da minha forma física, sofri um acidente de moto que não me deixou treinar direito, quase quebrei o pé… E sua luta mais sinistra, qual foi?

RAYFAN: A final contra o Leandro Martins, acho. Mas todos os oponentes são excepcionais também. Mas, como sou judoca – fui campeão brasileiro em 2009 e vice em 2012 –, percebi que o jogo do Leandro era semelhante ao meu, de derrubar e passar. Então utilizei o judô para trabalhar as quedas, e investi num jogo de solo mais compacto, sem muito espaços. Ele é um atleta muito forte então foi necessário ter muito cuidado com as entradas dele. E você, como foi sua final com o Marcos Franco, da Gracie Barra?

IGOR: Eu dei uma acelerada no início e senti que ele ficou um pouco perdido. Foi aí que achei a brecha para finalizar na americana.

RAYFAN: Mandou bem. O peso-galo Igor Rodrigues já havia sido campeão brasileiro de Jiu-Jitsu nas faixas roxa e marrom. No fim de semana retrasado, no Grajaú, o lutador da CheckMat conseguiu enfim garantir o título na graduação máxima, a faixa-preta.

“Foram três vitórias obtidas na raça, com muita cautela e atenção. Na primeira, venci por pontos. A segunda também foi por pontos, mas terminei com um leglock encaixado. Já na final raspei e finalizei o Felipinho com o leglock”, contou ele ao GRACIEMAG.com.

O atleta de Ricardo Vieira lembrou sua trajetória no Jiu-Jitsu, ele que mora em Búzios, na região dos Lagos, e treina com Ricardinho no Rio de Janeiro.”Eu era da capoeira, esporte em que me consagrei em 1998, quando também fui campeão brasileiro. Em 2002, conheci a arte suave e me apaixonei. No mesmo ano iniciei meus treinos com o professor Marco Chuck, em Búzios. Com ele, ganhei vários títulos importantes. A faixa-preta veio após o ouro na faixa-marrom, no Brasileiro. Mas eu vi ali que os treinos em Búzios não seriam competitivos o suficiente para eu me juntar aos melhores do país”, relembra ele, que foi para a CheckMat em 2009.

“Ricardinho me convidou para fazer parte da equipe e comecei a ver o Jiu-Jitsu por outros ângulos. Segui vencendo outras competições e agora conquistei o título de campeão brasileiro na faixa-preta”, disse Igor, que resumiu sua maior qualidade no campeonato da CBJJ.

“Minha tática, traçada pelo meu treinador, era atacar os oponentes no pé e no joelho. Fui oportunista e soube encaixar nas horas certas”, vibrou.

The roosterweight Igor Rodrigues had already assumed the post of Brazilian National Jiu-Jitsu champion as a purple and brown belt. Two weekends ago in the Grajaú neighborhood of Rio de Janeiro City the CheckMat rep managed to achieve the distinction at the highest rank, as a black belt.

“I won three matches on grit, caution and attention. The first I won on points. The second came by points too but I had a kneebar in place when it ended. Now in the final I swept and finished Felipinho [Costa] via kneebar,” he told GRACIEMAG>com.

The Ricardo Vieira athlete looked back on the course of his career in Jiu-Jitsu. He lives in Búzios, in the lakes region of Rio de Janeiro State, and trains with Ricardo in Rio de Janeiro City. “I come from a capoeira background. I made it to the top of the sport in 1998, when I won the Brazilian National Championship. In 2002 I became acquainted with the gentle art and fell in love. On that same year I started training under Jiu-Jitsu professor Marco Chuck in Búzios. I won a number of important titles under him. I got my black belt after winning gold in the brown belt division at the Brazilian Nationals. Still, I could tell that training in Búzios wasn’t competitive enough for me to go up against the best in the country,” he remembered, explaining why in 2009 he made the move to team CheckMat.

“Ricardo invited me to join the team, and I started to see Jiu-Jitsu from different angles. I carried on winning other competitions, and now I’ve conquered the Brazilian national title at black belt,” said Igor, who summed up how he achieved the quality he did at the CBJJ championship.

“My strategy, laid out by my trainer, was to attack the opponents’ feet and knees. I was opportunistic and got the holds when the time was right,” he said jubilantly.
