A equipe GRACIEMAG, formada por admiradores ferrenhos de Carlson, aprendeu muito com o primogênito de Carlos Gracie, e tenta sempre retribuir tantos ensinamentos. Há dez anos, por exemplo, em revista publicada em 2008, nossos editores imaginaram como seria a entrevista definitiva do Gracie falecido em Chicago, aos 72 anos, por conta de uma parada cardíaca após complicações causadas por uma infecção renal. Relembre o mestre e suas frases favoritas, a seguir, e conte abaixo qual foi a melhor história que você vivenciou com o grande mestre Carlson Gracie, que jamais vai precisar de um mero busto para ser imortal.

Nosso editor-chefe não queria nem saber. Cobrava a reportagem por conta dos dois anos sem Carlson Gracie, o genial carrasco de Valdemar Santana e ilustre formador de feras como Wallid Ismail, Murilo Bustamante, Ricardo Libório, José Mario Sperry, Vitor Belfort, Ricardo De La Riva e outros.

Tal e qual a saudade, o prazo da revista também aperta. Foi quando o email insuspeito brotou no MSN, o programa de mensagens instantâneas usado na redação de GRACIEMAG.

Mestre Carlson, posso fazer umas perguntas?

Meu filho, deixa eu te dar uma pergunta, essa eu vou sugerir apenas para você e depois me diga se não vai dar um brilho fantástico na matéria. Pergunta assim, “Carlson, você com seus 76kg na época áurea seria capaz de ganhar de um Fedor desses, lutadores de 120kg e…”

Pô mestrão, mas essa pergunta eu lhe fiz anos atrás, você me respondeu que não seria cabotino de achar que poderia vencê-los, mas ai do Fedor e do Minotauro se tivessem seu peso…

Ih, poderoso você! Gostei, boa memória, bichão. Mas realmente, se não fosse a diferença de peso, esses caras na minha época não durariam três minutos comigo!

Como está tudo?

Estou muito bem, sinto falta do pessoal, claro, mas aqui é bom também. É como quando eu vivia em Chicago e ia para o Rio. Quando estava nos EUA, sentia falta do Brasil, e vice-versa… Aqui é tranquilo, clima gostoso, não faz aquele frio desgraçado de Chicago, que eu continuo não desejando nem para meu pior inimigo!

Carlson, tem Jiu-Jitsu no Céu?

Hein…? Meu filho, você é repórter?? Claro que tem, ué. Desde que cheguei estou sendo muito bem tratado. Levei do Homem aqui uma reprimenda de leve, por eu ter dito certa vez, na década de 1990, que ia fazer uma camiseta com a Santa Ceia, comigo no centro da mesa e em volta os traíras tentando tirar o pão da minha mão. Mas até o Leonardo Da Vinci aqui riu da ideia, e o Homem logo estava me pedindo para eu ensinar uns golpes.

Qual é afinal o sentido da vida, grande mestre?

Bicho, isso só vai descobrir quem tiver uma vida honrada, com muitas batalhas pelo caminho. O resto todo mundo sabe, o negócio é viver sem se apegar aos bens materiais e ajudar os outros sempre que tiver chance, não interessa se for teu conhecido ou não. O Homem aqui até me deu uns tapinhas nas costas por eu ter abrigado muita gente lá na academia em Copacabana, chamado moradores de rua para tomar banho de vez em quando e comer um negócio lá, mas eu nem lembrava disso. Agora, se você quer saber o que não ajuda em nada o ser humano, eu digo e repito: cultivar ingratidão, traição, desonestidade, bajular os outros, cobiçar mulher dos amigos, incitar briga, mentir, beber em excesso, ser um chato, usar bombas, esteroides e derivados.

Falando em fazer boa ação, o pessoal aí lembrou a vez em que você ajudou uma senhora a atravessar em Los Angeles?

Poderosa ela, te contaram essa? Mas como eu ia supor que ela só estava tentando trocar um dólar por moedas para botar no parquímetro e pagar o estacionamento? Achei que ela queria ajuda para atravessar a rua, ué… É que, mesmo depois de tanto tempo nos EUA, nunca falei inglês. Mas também nunca precisei. Não me tornei amigo do Susumu Nagao, o maior fotógrafo de lutas do mundo, e ele só falava japonês? E aquela vez que o Carlão [Barreto] apagou o Kevin Randleman num evento no Rio, em 1997? O Coleman entendeu direitinho quando falei para ele, “Ô Coleman, silipi, silipi…” Mas isso tudo foi um tempão atrás, antes dos caras me traírem.

Carlson, como fica o conceito de lealdade aos mestres hoje, com equipes de lutadores de MMA de várias origens diferentes?

Ué, eu mesmo já não treinei o Chuck Liddell? Esse era puro suco, brabo. Ele passou uma semana treinando comigo em 2004, na Califórnia. Pediu dicas para escapar do cem-quilos e voltar em pé. É um atleta fabuloso, aprende muito rápido. Depois de três dias, ninguém segurava mais ele no chão. O que importa é o caráter da pessoa, não em que academia ela começou. No Pride 4, em 1997, fiquei no córner do Hugo Duarte contra o Mark Kerr. “Ah, mas ele é da luta-livre, como pode?” Tanto pode que fiz: o cara era brasileiro, e viajou até o outro lado do mundo, no Japão, para enfrentar um dos maiores lutadores do mundo. Decidi ajudá-lo. Hoje as academias de MMA funcionam de forma formidável, tem contrato certinho. Só não pode ter creontagem com os técnicos. Abram o olho!

Como você vê o aumento crescente de atletas pegos no antidoping, no mundo das lutas?

Ué, eu sempre disse que muita gente usava bomba, taí o resultado. E ainda falta pegar muito mais. Eu na minha época era leve feito o Marcelinho Garcia, e vencia os caras mais pesados. Ninguém usava isso.

Qual afinal é o segredo para ser vitorioso, no Jiu-Jitsu ou no vale-tudo?

Não tem mistério, bichão. O segredo para mim é o de sempre: ter muito gás, porque você não sabe como a luta vai se desenrolar, e jogar sempre por cima. Caiu, levanta, fica por cima e ganha. Isso serve para o Jiu-Jitsu e vale-tudo. Para ter sucesso hoje no ringue tem de saber boxe e muay thai também, que são grandes lutas.

Os treinos da sua época estariam antiquados se comparados com os de hoje em dia?

Claro que não! A gente sempre fez uma parte física forte, para dar gás, como o pessoal faz hoje. E os nossos treinos, se o pessoal continuasse fazendo, não perdia. Por exemplo, na minha época de lutador de vale-tudo a maioria dos meus treinos era com os caras podendo baixar a porrada, e eu só podia agarrar e finalizar, sem dar um soco. O segredo é manter a calma no meio daquelas bordoadas todas, que o Jiu-Jitsu salva na hora do sufoco.

Você sempre foi nosso leitor, mestre. Alguma sugestão de pauta para a próxima edição?

Aquela que cansei de sugerir, ué. Os dez lutadores de vale-tudo mais feios do mundo! Tenho a lista aqui comigo, mas quero ver a de vocês, para ver se vocês estão ficando espertos…

Encontramos um vídeo do seu último seminário, em dezembro de 2005, na academia de seu aluno João Crus, em Dripping Springs, Texas. Podemos divulgar?

Claro, claro, mas isso é bobagem, só um golpezinho.

Carlson would have turned seventy-seven years old last month, and the eminent fighter and notable teacher certainly would have had much more to teach us. Master Carlson! May I ask you a few questions?

Son, let me give you a question to ask, I’m just going to give you this one and then you tell me if it won’t put a swell shine on your article. Ask this, “Carlson, at 76kgs during your peak would you be able to beat someone like Fedor, a guy at 120kgs and…”

Shoot, master, but I already asked you that question years ago, you’d be tooting your own horn to say you could beat them, but if Fedor and Minotauro weighed the same as you…

Whoa, you’re good! I like you, good memory, chief. But for real, if it weren’t for the weight difference, those guys wouldn’t last three minutes with me!

How is everything?

I’m doing really great, I miss the gang, of course, but it’s good here too. It’s like when I used to live in Chicago and would go to Rio. When I was in the States, I’d miss Brazil, and vice-versa… Here all’s good, nice weather, it doesn’t get horribly cold like in Chicago, which I still wouldn’t wish on my worst enemy! (laughs).

Carlson, is there Jiu-Jitsu in heaven?

Huh…? Son, are you really a reporter?? Of course there is, jeez. Ever since I got here I’ve been treated really well. I took a bit of a scolding from the Man, for once having said, in the 1990’s, I was going to print a shirt of the Last Meal, with me at the middle of the table and the traitors around me trying to grab my bread outta my hands. But even Leonardo Da Vinci had a laugh, and soon the Man himself was even asking me to teach him some moves and what not.

What’s the meaning of life after all?

Well, you’ll only find that out once you’ve lived an honorable life, going through many battles along the way. The rest everyone knows, the thing is to live without getting caught up in material things and to help others whenever you get the chance, regardless of whether you know them or not. The Man patted me on the back for having sheltered so many people at my gym in Copacabana, bringing in the homeless to take baths and eat; I hadn’t even remembered doing that. Now, if you want to know what doesn’t do anyone a bit of good, I’ll say it twice: being ungrateful, betrayal, dishonesty, kissing ass, coveting your friend’s wife, inciting violence, lying, drinking too much, being a pain, using steroids and performance enhancers…

Speaking of good deeds, does the gang there remember the time you helped that old lady cross the road in Los Angeles?

Tough old bird, you remember? How was I supposed to know she was just trying to break a dollar for coins for the parking meter? I thought she wanted help crossing the street. Even after living for so long in the USA I never learned English, and what’s good here is that everyone understands each other. But I never needed it there, didn’t I become friends with Susumu Nagao, the greatest fight photographer in the world, and he only spoke Japanese? And what about that time Carlão put out Randleman’s lights at that event in Rio? Coleman understood just fine when I said, “Oh Coleman, silip, silip…” But that was all long ago, before the guys betrayed me.

Carlson, how do you see the concept of loyalty today with the advent of events like the IFL, with teams of fighters of different origins?

Sheesh, didn’t I train with Chuck Liddell? He was tough, and mean. He spent a week training with me in 2004, in California. He asked for tips on how to escape side-control and get back to his feet. He’s a fantastic athlete, learns really quick. After three days, nobody could hold him down. But so, like I said, what’s important is a person’s character, not what gym he trains at. At Pride 4, in 1997, I cornered Hugo Duarte against Mark Kerr. Ah, but he was from luta livre, how could I do such a thing? Well I did it, the guy was Brazilian, and he traveled to the other side of the world, to Japan, to face one of the greatest fighters in the world. I decided to help him. So these leagues are marvelous, you just can’t go betraying your coaches. Watch your back!

What are your views on the rise in athletes getting caught for steroids, in the world of fighting?

Sheesh, I always said a lot of folks were using steroids, and that’s what comes of it. And they need to catch more of them. During my time I was light as Marcelo Garcia, and I beat heavier guys. Nobody touched the stuff.

In the end what’s the secret to winning, master? Both in Jiu-Jitsu and MMA?

There’s no mystery to it, man. To me the secret is the same old one: have a lot of wind, because you never know how the fight will play out, and always fight from the top. If you fall, get up, get on top and win. That goes for both Jiu-Jitsu and MMA. To be successful in the ring you need to do boxing and muay thai too, they’re great styles.

Were training methods during your days outdated compared to that of today?

Of course not! We always trained physical conditioning hard, for gas, like the folks do now. And some stuff we’d do, if the guys now would still practice, they wouldn’t lose. For example, during my days as an MMA fighter most of my training was with guys who were allowed to lay a beating on me and I could only grab them, submit them. The secret is to keep cool, and Jiu-Jitsu saves in the end.

You have always read our magazine, master. Do you have any ideas for articles?

That same one I wore myself out suggesting. The ten ugliest MMA fighters in the world! I have a list here, but I want to see yours, to see if you guys are keeping up with things…

We found a video of your last seminar, in December of 2005, at your student João Crus’ academy, in Dripping Springs, Texas . Can we show it?

Of course, of course, but it’s silly, it’s just one little move.

And is there cockfighting up there, master? What about cards?

Huh? Son, are you really a reporter??

O mestre Hugo Duarte, personalidade lendária da luta no Brasil, comentou que Sérgio Babu absorveu a cultura da luta livre quando treinavam juntos, por isso merecia a graduação há pelo menos dois anos. 

Babu, que também é faixa-preta de Jiu-Jitsu, hoje comanda os treinamentos na Brazilian Top Team, ao lado de Eraldo Paes.
