One of Japan’s greatest heroes, 1992’s Olympic judo gold medalist Hidehiko Yoshida had his farewell fight this Sunday. The bout was on the card of Astra, a new event promoted by Dream and World Victory Road in Tokyo. The result wasn’t the best. Yoshida ended up dropping a unanimous decision to Kazuhiro Nakamura.

Despite his great judo record, Yoshida’s results oscillate a great deal in MMA. The judoka holds nine wins, eight losses and a draw. In his career, he has beaten such beasts as Don Frye, Maurice Smith and Tank Abbott; drawn with Royce Graciel; and lost to such well known fighters as Wanderlei Silva (twice), Mirko Cro Cop and Josh Barnett.

Um dos grandes ídolos da luta no Japão, judoca medalhista olímpico em 1992, Hidehiko Yoshida fez o último combate da carreira neste domingo. O desafio aconteceu no Astra, novo evento que é produzido pelo Dream e World Victory Road, em Tóquio. O resultado não foi o melhor. Yoshida acabou batido por Kazuhiro Nakamura na decisão unânime dos jurados. 

Apesar dos grandes resultados no judô, o cartel de Yoshida oscila bastante no MMA. O japonês conta com nove vitórias, oito derrotas e um empate. Na carreira, venceu feras como Don Frye, Maurice Smith e Tank Abbott; empatou com Royce Gracie; e perdeu para atletas conhecidos como Wanderlei Silva (duas vezes), Mirko Cro Cop e Josh Barnett.

Wanderlei Silva really will be facing Yoshihiro Akiyama in his next fight, at UFC 116, says Fighters Only website.

The matchup is set for July 3, the day Silva turns 34 years old.

Nicknamed “Sexyama” for his appearances on the catwalks of Japan, the eminent judoka has only lost once in 16 MMA fights, with two No Contests. In 2005, in his second fight, he was knocked out by France’s Jerome LeBanner.

Since then he has submitted Melvin Manhoef, knocked out Denis Kang and built a solid record. Solid but perfectly suited to the likings of Wanderlei, a knockout-crazy slugger dying to notch some wins and salivating about the prospect of facing a fighter like Akiyama, who made his name in the Japanese ring once Wand’s playground.

Wand has faced judo stars Shungo Oyama, Hidehiko Yoshida (twice) and Kazuhiro Nakamura, but has never lost to a judoka, or to a Japanese fighter. A perfect matchup for the careers of both fighters. Or at least the winner.

Wanderlei Silva faz mesmo sua próxima luta contra Yoshihiro Akiyama, no UFC 116, informou o site Fighters Only.

A luta será no dia 3 de julho, dia em que o Silva comemora 34 anos.

Apelidado de “Sexyama” por suas aparições na passarela japonesa, o exímio judoca só perdeu uma luta em 16 no MMA, com dois No Contests. Em 2005, logo em sua segunda luta, caiu por nocaute diante do francês Jerome LeBanner.

De lá para cá, finalizou Melvin Manhoef, nocauteou Denis Kang e construiu um card sólido. Sólido porém perfeito para ser demolido por Wanderlei, um nocauteador doido para acumular vitórias e que chega a salivar quando vê um japonês pela frente. Foram 15 lutas contra lutadores do Japão na carreira.

Wand enfrentou os astros do judô Shungo Oyama, Hidehiko Yoshida (duas vezes) e Kazuhiro Nakamura, mas jamais perdeu para um judoca, nem para um japonês. Uma luta perfeita para a carreira de ambos. Ou ao menos do vencedor.

Olympic judo gold medalist from the 1992 Games, Hidehiko Yoshida has announced his next will be the last fight in his MMA career. The fight is set for April 25, at an event called Astra, as reported by the MMAJunkie. Still no opponent has been defined.

At 40 years of age, Yoshida has nine wins, seven losses and one draw. In his career he has beaten the likes of Don Frye, Mark Hunt and Maurice Smith, as well as another gold medal-winning judoka, Satoshi Ishii, in his last outing. He has lost to fighters of the caliber of Wanderlei Silva, Josh Barnett and Mirko Cro Cop. The lone draw on his record came as a result of his fight with Royce Gracie at Pride Shockwave in 2003.

The stage for memorable Prides, the stadium that established Fedor Emelianenko, Rodrigo Minotauro, and Wanderlei Silva was true to its history with a solid and breathtaking card, and saw the crowned Hidehiko Yoshida dominate the rookie Satoshi Ishii, also a judo star, and astonished everyone with knockouts from the all-powerful Alistair Overeem, Gegard Mousasi, and Melvin Manhoef.

After a quick fall in the corner of the ring and the bench, Aoki took Hirota’s right arm to his back, twisting him in a bizarre police lock.

With this, Aoki left his opponent defenseless and released several punches until tiring of the game and finishing the job on his arm. The problem was that Hirota had no desire to tap, and his arm was bent, forcing Judge Yuji Shimada to stop the fight at 1min17s.

Like a lankier Brock Lesnar, Aoki raised his middle finger in Hirota’s thuggish face and repeated the gesture for the audience in an extravagant run on the canvas.

The main fight of the night was between two fighters of the Olympic pantheon. A gold-medalist in Beijing 2008, Satoshi Ishii debuted against the gold-medalist in Barcelona 1992, Yoshida. Without a gi, the 40-year old fighter didn’t give his potential successor – a 23 year old – a chance, dominating the fight on his feet in the first attack – which included kneeing Ishii in the face.

The young judo fighter was better in the second attack, and punished Yoshida’s legs by making him limp heavily. But, at the end of the third attack, the jurors chose Yoshida.

Another highlight of the night was the Sengoku featherweight champ, Masanori Kanehara, who took Norifumi Yamamoto to his third defeat in 20 fights – the second in a row, however. Another who appears to have acquired a taste for defeat was the fierce Rameau Sokoudjou. The beast from Camaroon lost this time to the MMA employee Minowa, a figure who is always fighting during the Japanese New Year celebration.

Palco de Prides memoráveis, o estádio que consagrou Fedor Emelianenko, Rodrigo Minotauro e Wanderlei Silva fez jus à sua história com um card sólido e empolgante, e viu o coroa Hidehiko Yoshida dominar o estreante Satoshi Ishii, também astro do judô, e sacudiu com os nocautes dos todo-poderosos Alistair Overeem, Gegard Mousasi e Melvin Manhoef.

Após uma queda rápida no canto do ringue e a montada, Aoki levou o braço direito de Hirota às suas costas, entortando-o numa chave de polícia bizarra. Com isso, Aoki deixou o oponente indefeso e soltou diversos socos, até cansar da brincadeira e acabar o serviço no braço. O problema foi que Hirota não teve a menor vontade de bater, e o braço envergou, obrigando o juiz Yuji Shimada a interromper a luta, a 1min17s.

Dando uma de Brock Lesnar mais magricela, Aoki levantou o dedo médio na cara do marrento Hirota e repetiu o gesto para o público, numa volta olímpica extravagante.

A luta principal da noite foi entre dois judocas do panteão olímpico. Medalha de ouro em Pequim-2008, Satoshi Ishii fez sua estreia contra o medalhista de ouro em Barcelona-1992, Yoshida. Sem kimono, o lutador de 40 anos não deu chance ao candidato a sucessor, de 23 anos, dominando a luta em pé no primeiro assalto –inclusive com joelhadas na cara de Ishii.

O jovem judoca voltou melhor no segundo assalto e castigou as pernas de Yoshida, fazendo-o mancar bastante. Mas, no fim do terceiro assalto, os jurados optaram por Yoshida.

Outro destaque da noite foi o campeão dos penas do Sengoku, Masanori Kanehara, que levou Norifumi Yamamoto à sua terceira derrota em 20 lutas – a segunda seguida, porém. Outro que parece ter tomado gosto pela derrota foi o bravo Rameau Sokoudjou. A fera camaronesa perdeu desta vez para o funcionário do vale-tudo Minowa, figura cativa no réveillon japonês.

K-1, World Victory Road and Dream have added the final touches to their end-of-the-year event, Dynamite!!, to be held December 31 in the Saitama Arena. And, as Japanese organizations tend to do, some last minute matchups have been announced. Among them is the bout pitting Melvin Manhoef against Kazuo Misaki.

Another challenge to feature on the card, at least according to messages posted on Twitter, is Gegard Mousasi facing Gary Goodridge. Besides matching the current light heavyweight champion of Strikeforce against a heavyweight, the bout is under K-1 rules, making it a non-MMA match. It has not yet been officially confirmed, though.

Beyond that, the event features Olympic-judo gold-medalists Satoshi Ishii and Hidehiko Yoshida, facing each other, and such standouts as Shinya Aoki, Alistair Overeem and Rameau Thierry Sokodjou, among others. Check out the promo video for the event:

Na noite de 31 de dezembro, o apaixonado público japonês e os amantes de lutas em todo o planeta poderão acompanhar dez combates de MMA, um mini-torneio de K-1 e duas superlutas, também nas regras da luta em pé.

Na briga pela audiência, o evento pagou caro para ver dois campeões olímpicos de judô frente a frente, lutando vale-tudo. São eles Satoshi Ishii, vencedor entre os pesados em Pequim-2008, e Hidehiko Yoshida, também campeão no peso pesado, só que em Barcelona-1992. Ishii, que já teve a estreia adiada algumas vezes, se apresentará pela primeira vez na modalidade.

Shinya Aoki, que vem de vitória sobre as feras Joachim Hansen e Vitor Shaolin, encara Mizuto Hirota. Outras feras nipônicas serão Tatsuya Kawajiri, Norofumi “Kid” Yamamoto e Hayato Sakurai, entre outros.

Já Kazuyuki Fujita terá a dura missão de enfrentar Alistair Overeem. Curioso é que, apesar de Overeem ser especialista na trocação – inclusive nocauteou o brasileiro Ewerton Teixeira na final do K-1 World GP -, vem de três vitórias por finalização no MMA. A guilhotina dele é tão afiada quanto os chutes, como se vê.

Também é aguardada a final do torneio Super Hulk entre Ikuhisa Minowa e Rameau Thierry Sokoudjou. Nos combates nas regras do K-1, Andy Souwer terá Masato pela frente e Ray Sefo combate com Yosuke Nishijima.

As is the tradition in Japan, New Year’s Eve is celebrated with a monumental fighting spectacle, this year in the form of Dynamite!!, promoted by K-1, Dream and World Victory Road. This December 31, the fight-loving Japanese public and MMA and kickboxing fans the world over will be treated to 10 MMA matches, a mini tournament and two K-1 rules superfights.

Many of the matchups will feature athletes consecrated in Japan, Two Olympic judo champions will face off under MMA rules. Satoshi Ishii, heavyweight gold medalist at Peking 2008, will make his MMA debut against Hidehiko Yoshida, also a gold medalist, but at Barcelona 1992, in a matchup that has been postponed several times already.

Shinya Aoki, who is coming off wins over Joachim Hansen and Vitor Shaolin, faces Mizuto Hirota. Other Japanese heroes to make appearances are Tatsuya Kawajiri, Norifumi “Kid” Yamamoto and Hayato Sakurai.

Kazuyuki Fujita has the tough task of facing Alistair Overeem. Curiously, although Overeem is a standup specialist – even knocking out Brazil’s Ewerton Teixeira in the final of the K-1 World GP –, he is coming off three submission wins in a row.

Also awaited is the Super Hulk tournament final between Ikuhisa Minowa and Rameau Thierry Sokodjou. The K-1 rules bouts pit Andy Souwer against Masato and Ray Sefo against Yosuke Nishijima.
