Mikey Musumeci of Jaco Hybrid Training Center in Florida conquered the world title at the 2014 World Championships on the first day of the event. Having won the 2014 Pan Jiu-Jitsu Championship this past March, Mikey was able to continue his success for this big day for team Atos in the purple belt light-featherweight category.

Overall, he had six matches, three of which ended in submission: one omoplata, one armbar and one choke from the back. His toughest match was the final against Hiago Gama of Alliance because it was a match defined by “more heart than anything”.

On the podium, Guilherme Mendes promoted the seventeen-year-old to brown belt. The teen is also sister to Tammi Musumeci, a young black belt who recently won the 2014 Pan Jiu-Jitsu Championship as well. “My sister is my idol and I’m following her footsteps since she was also promoted to brown belt at seventeen,” Mikey says.

When he’s not in school as a newly graduated junior going into his senior year, Mikey trains Jiu-Jitsu twice a day and completes his strength and conditioning two times a week. He also drills a lot with his sister. Soon he’ll take the ACT test and hopes to follow Tammi’s lead and enter a law program for university.

At four years old, Mikey began Jiu-Jitsu and by 2012 he won his first blue belt juvenile world title. He completed the feat the following year and was promoted to purple belt at sixteen in 2013.

What makes the journey to purple belt world champion unique for Mikey is that he only competed at adult for one year– this year, the same year he fought his first year at purple belt. Now the accomplishments have been fulfilled and he enters the world of toeholds and kneebars.

But while he was well-rounded in his submissions, the boy loves his berimbolos. His flexible game is, in appearance, similar to the Miyao brothers who have claimed their fame due to the berimbolo game as well. He poses the threats similar to the Miyaos and has been dubbed the “American Miyao” for the time being.

Following this championship will be much training ahead as the summer break lends him the time and “if the IBJJF doesn’t stop me, Il’l compete at the No-Gi Worlds later this year”. The rule for purple belt rank is that you must stay at that rank for one and a half years, and so far the time has only lasted a year.

The purple belts only showcased the rooster and light-featherweights as the rest of the male purple belt divisions will continue tomorrow, May 30.

2. Ostap Manastryski (Open Mat MMA), faixa-roxa

Faixa-roxa de família ucraniana que vive no Canadá e treina em Toronto, a fera Ostap venceu o peso-pluma no último Europeu e ficou com a prata no Pan. No Mundial 2012, ele fez boa campanha e ficou com o bronze ao perder para João Miyao. Chegou sua vez de beliscar o ouro?

3. Nathalia Azoff (BTT), faixa-marrom

Nathalia teve uma boa temporada na faixa-marrom, e venceu o Pan e o Boston Open no peso médio. Já tem títulos europeus e até um ouro mundial, na faixa-roxa. Se ela amadureceu como aparenta, vai subir no pódio mais um ano.

4. Felipe Cesar (Barbosa Jiu-Jitsu), faixa-marrom

Com a marrom na cintura há apenas dois meses, Felipe Cesar vem de vitória no peso médio do Pan, na faixa-roxa, e ainda beliscou o bronze no absoluto. No Brasileiro, ele fez sua estreia na marrom perto de casa e venceu o peso. Vejamos como ele se sai na Califórnia.

5. AaRae Alexander (Lloyd Irvin), faixa-roxa

AaRae Alexander debutou na faixa-roxa no Pan, quando venceu o peso-pena. No Mundial 2012, ela garantiu o ouro na faixa-azul e ainda ralava na faculdade. Competidora desde criança, já coleciona quatro ouros em Mundiais, e quer mais um em 2013.

6. Matheus Costa (Gracie Humaitá), faixa-roxa

Bicampeão mundial absoluto faixa-azul, o atleta da Gracie Humaitá em Niterói persegue agora o ouro no leve da roxa. Matheus venceu o Europeu na faixa-roxa, e agora o garoto quer chegar na ponta dos cascos para o Mundial. Olho na raspagem de gancho do aluno de Guto Vicente.

7. Eros Baluyot (Atos), faixa-azul

Aluno de Ralph Go, o galinho Eros vai buscar seu segundo título mundial na faixa-azul. Ano passado ele fisgou o bronze no Pan e depois conquistou o Mundial. Dono de um bom jogo de guarda aberta, Eros é fã do berimbolo. Olho nesse guardeiro da nova geração.

8. Isaque Bahiense (Nova União), faixa-azul

O garotão carioca é mais uma das crias do projeto liderado por Fábio Andrade, da Nova União Bangu, e tem no quarto vários títulos da IBJJF. Como juvenil, conquistou dois títulos mundiais absolutos, o Brasileiro de Jiu-Jitsu e o Rio Open. Em seu primeiro ano como adulto, Isaque não sentiu a força dos rivais e conquistou o título no WPJJC em Abu Dhabi. Ele vai buscar o ouro no meio-pesado.

9. Wellington Luis (Cícero Costha), faixa-roxa

Conhecido em São Paulo por sua pegada de costas partindo da guarda, o popular “Alemão’ vem para brigar no topo no peso médio e quiçá no absoluto. Em abril, Wellington venceu o WPJJC, em Abu Dhabi. Olho neste parceiro de treinos de Leandro Lo, Paulo e João Miyao.

10. Rodrigo Mendes (Gracie Barra), faixa-marrom

Aluno de José Olimpio, o Zé Radiola, Rodrigo luta seu primeiro Mundial como faixa-marrom, após vencer o Pan na nova faixa. Na roxa, Mendes foi campeão mundial no superpesado e venceu o Brasileiro. Será que ele embola a divisão e o absoluto? Vamos ver no sábado.

O Campeonato Brasileiro de Jiu-Jitsu 2013 começou nesta quinta-feira, dia 25 de abril, em Barueri, São Paulo. E alguns dos novos talentos do esporte começaram a ser coroados.

O primeiro dia foi apenas dos faixas-brancas e azuis. Na faixa-azul feminino, brilhou a estrela de Géssica Ventura (Alliance), que venceu o peso médio e o absoluto após bater Caroline Fernanda (Ryan Gracie), na final do aberto.

Outros destaques da competição foram Hiago Gama (Alliance), que venceu o peso-pluma no Europeu, no Pan e agora no Brasileiro. Para tal ele venceu, em Barueri, o vice Matheus Gonzaga (Academia Pitbull). Faixa-azul da Gracie Humaitá, Brenda Heller fez sua estreia no adulto e conquistou o bicampeonato no peso-pena, após vencer Larissa Rezende (Gracie Barra).
