Since the beginning, UFC president Dana White has been saying the promotion will return to Japan. And now there’s a date for that to happen; it’ll be on February 26 at the traditional Saitama Super Arena. In 1997, the UFC bought Pride FC, which sealed the fate of the Japanese organization that made history early in the century. Since then, despite MMA still having a passionate following in the Land of the Rising Sun, the sport has been on a decline in the country. Could an event from the UFC change that story around?

Whether it happens or not, it’s still too early to know. But the formula UFC parent company Zuffa has come up with for the event seeks to identify with Pride lovers. It should be a nostalgic night.

At the post-UFC Rio press conference, Rodrigo Minotauro, who fought for the first time ever in Brazil, commented on a possible return to Japan, the place where he was catapulted into stardom.

“Now it’s time to rest, and – who knows? – maybe I’ll get to fight February in Japan,” said Mino.

Besides Minotauro, other stars from the late Pride FC event may put in appearances, such as Wanderlei Silva, Mirko Cro Cop and Quinton Jackson. Of course, there are plenty of Japanese fighters on the UFC roster who could see action, like Yushin Okami, Hatsu Hioki, Yoshihiro Akiyama, Takanori Gomi and Norifumi “Kid” Yamamoto.

Desde o início do ano, Dana White, presidente do UFC, confirmara a volta da organização ao Japão. E o evento já tem data para acontecer, vai ser no dia 26 de fevereiro, na tradicional Saitama Super Arena.

O Ultimate comprou o Pride no que selou de vez o fim da organização japonesa que fez história no início do século. De lá para cá, apesar de o MMA ainda ser uma paixão na Terra do Sol Nascente, o que se viu foi a decadência da modalidade no país. Poderia uma edição do UFC mudar essa história?

Se isso vai acontecer, ainda é cedo para saber. Mas, a fórmula adotada pelos dirigentes da Zuffa para o evento procura a identificação dos amantes do Pride. Deve ser uma noite nostálgica.

Na coletiva de imprensa do UFC Rio, Rodrigo Minotauro, que lutara pela primeira vez no Brasil, comentou o possível retorno ao Japão, local onde alcançou o estrelato.

“Agora é descansar e, quem sabe, volto em fevereiro, no Japão”, disse Minota.

Além de Minotauro, outros ídolos do extinto Pride devem dar as caras, entre eles Wanderlei Silva, Mirko Cro Cop e Quinton Jackson. Claro, lutadores japoneses do Ultimate poderão estar em ação, atletas como Yushin Okami, Hatsu Hioki, Yoshihiro Akiyama, Takanori Gomi e Norifumi “Kid” Yamamoto.

Jiu-Jitsu black belt Marlon Sandro had a string of excellent performances in Japan, but on December 29 he ended up losing and had to hand his Sengoku championship belt over to his opponent, Hatsu Hioki.

However, even so it was a fight where Sandro overcame adversity. The ex-champion fought with a nasty infection in his hand, which probably took some of the power out of his potent punches.

Still in Japan, Marlon recovers and awaits his next chance. He will probably get another shot at Hioki, but with a new contract, he may well appear in the USA soon.

O faixa-preta de Jiu-Jitsu Marlon Sandro vinha de excelentes apresentações no Japão, mas acabou derrotado no dia 29 de dezembro e teve de entregar o cinturão de panas do Sengoku ao oponente Hatsu Hioki.

No entanto, mesmo assim foi uma luta de superação. O ex-campeão lutou com uma forte infecção na mão, o que, provavelmente, diminuiu a força dos seus perigosos socos.

Ainda no Japão, Marlon se recupera e aguarda a próxima chance. Provavelmente terá direito à revanche contra Hioki, mas, de contrato novo, também pode aparecer em ação nos EUA.

This Thursday in Tokyo, Japan, marked the year’s-end Sengoku event.

In the evening’s main event, the featherweight belt changed hands. Hatsu Hioki defeated Marlon Sandro via unanimous judges’ decision after fight hard-fought rounds.

In other bouts, Taisuke Okuno knocked out Ryo Chonan in the opening round. Now Yuki Sasaki, who recently fought Paulo Filho at Bitetti Combat, was knocked out by Mamed Khalidov.

Aconteceu nesta quinta-feira, em Tóquio, no Japão, a edição de fim de ano do Sengoku.

Na principal luta da noite, o cinturão de penas acabou trocando de mãos. Hatsu Hioki derrotou Marlon Sandro por decisão unânime dos juízes depois de cinco rounds disputados.

Em outros combates, Taisuke Okuno nocauteou Ryo Chonan ainda no round inicial. Já Yuki Sasaki, que lutou recentemente no Bitetti Combat contra Paulo Filho, foi nocauteado por Mamed Khalidov.

Campeão peso pena do Sengoku, Marlon Sandro vai ter um final de ano agitado. O lutador confirmou ao GRACIEMAG.com que enfrentaria Hatsu Hioki ainda  em setembro (veja aqui). Mas a luta, que era para acontecer em outubro, acabou marcada para o dia 30 de dezembro, no evento que marca o final de ano da organização japonesa.

O faixa-preta de Jiu-Jitsu vem se destacando pelos nocautes, foram quatro nas últimas cinco lutas. No entanto, a arte suave pode ser o caminho dessa vez.

“Acho que ele vem para o chão. Não acredito que vai querer ficar em pé. Estou me preparando em todas as áreas, venho do Jiu-Jitsu e, sem desmerecer a parte de chão dele, que é um cara finalizador, vou estar preparado. Estou treinando muito chão, mas a minha parte em pé também está bem afiada”, diz ao GRACIEMAG.com.

“É uma luta pelo título e não posso dar mole. Tenho que fazer uma luta boa não apenas para mim, mas para o público e evento. Devo não passar o natal e ano-novo com a família, mas estou revertendo isso numa coisa positiva para lutar ainda melhor”, completa.

Outro motivo de comemoração é o novo contrato, que agora o libera para lutar em eventos americanos. Como o UFC exige exclusividade, é bem capaz que Marlon apareça em organizações como Strikeforce ou Bellator.

“Renovei o contrato com o Sengoku e agora posso lutar nos Estados Unidos. Tenho exclusividade no Japão com eles e com o Pancrase, onde também sou campeão. Estou batalhando por mais essa vitória no Japão, mas posso lutar nos eventos americanos também, o que o pessoal vinha pedindo muito. Estou feliz, porque os fãs têm me apoiado bastante, estão conhecendo mais o meu trabalho e quero fazer sempre boas lutas para agradar a todos. Queria que as minhas lutas fossem transmitidas aqui no Brasil, mas, enquanto isso não acontece, sigo batalhando”, encerra a fera da Nova União.

Sengoku featherweight champion Marlon Sandro’s end of the year will be a lively one. The fighter had previously confirmed to GRACIEMAG.com that he would face Hatsu Hioki in September, then October, but now it’s set for December 30, at the promotion’s New Year’s event.

The Jiu-Jitsu black belt has been turning heads for his knockouts – four of them in his last five fights. This time, however, he’s banking on Jiu-Jitsu to be his path to victory.

“I have a feeling he’s going to want to take it to the ground. I don’t believe he’s going to want to strike. I’m prepared in every way. I’m from a Jiu-Jitsu background so – not to underestimate his ground game, as he’s a finisher – I’ll be ready. I’m training a lot on the ground but my standup is really sharp too,” he tells GRACIEMAG.com.

“It’s a title fight, so I can’t mess up. I have to put on a great fight not just for me, but for the public and the event. I probably won’t spend Christmas or New Year’s with the family, but I’m looking at it in a positive light to try and make me fight better,” he adds.

Another reason for celebration is his new contract, which now leaves him free to fight in American promotions. As the UFC demands exclusivity, that leaves the door open for Marlon to fight at events like Strikeforce and Bellator.

“I renewed my contract with Sengoku and now I can fight in the United States. It’s exclusive to them and Pancrase in Japan; I’m the champion at Pancrase too. I’m going to battle for yet another win in Japan, but I can fight in U.S. Events too, which a lot of folks have been pushing for. I’m happy because the fans have given me a lot of support, they’re getting to see what I can do and I want to keep having good fights to keep pleasing everyone. I wish my fights were broadcast in Brazil but, while that’s not happening, I’ll keep at it,” says the Nova União featherweight juggernaut in closing.

Champion of both Sengoku and Pancrase Marlon Sandro returns to combat October 30, at the 15^th installment of Japan’s Sengoku event. Marlon is already going through preparations for the fight, which may or may not count for the title.

“If the fight is against Hatsu Hioki, it counts for the title. But the other possible opponent is Ronnie Mann. In that case, the title wouldn’t be on the line,” says the black belt.

While he awaits final word on who he’ll be fighting next, the fighter carries on strong in training at Nova União.

“Sengoku has never let me down; that’s why I’m training hard. I want to and will fight on that date; I’ll be ready for anyone they throw at me,” he warns.

And Marlon’s team has other important fights on the horizon before year’s end. After making a successful WEC debut with an armbar on Anthony Leone in July, Renan Barão will be back at the latest in December. Now Shooto World champion Luis Beição will be in a GP on October 16 in Holland alongside another Brazilian, Roan “Jucão” Carneiro.

“I think by the end of December the team will have come to a tally of one hundred fights on the year,” says satisfied team leader Dedé Pederneiras.

Campeão do Sengoku e Pancrase, Marlon Sandro volta a combater no dia 30 de outubro, quando o evento japonês realiza a sua 15ª edição. Ainda sem adversário definido, Marlon já se prepara para o combate, que pode ou não valer o cinturão. 

“Se a luta for contra o Hatsu Hioki, vale o título. Mas outro adversário em vista é o Ronnie Mann. Neste caso, não vale o cinturão”, conta o faixa-preta.

Enquanto aguarda a definição, o lutador segue forte nos treinamentos na Nova União. 

“O Sengoku nunca me deixou na mão, por isso já estou treinando forte. Quero e vou lutar nesta data, estarei preparado para qualquer um”, avisa. 

E a equipe de Marlon tem mais lutas importantes até o final do ano. Depois de estrear com vitória no WEC, com um armlock contra Anthony Leone, em junho, Renan Barão estará de volta no evento, no máximo, até dezembro. Já o campeão mundial do Shooto Luis Beição luta um GP com feras como Roan “Jucão” Carneiro, na Holanda, no dia 16 de outubro. 

“Acho que, até o fim de dezembro, a equipe fecha o ano com um total de 100 lutas”, comemora Dedé.
