A two-time World Championship-winning black belt, Leonardo Nogueira of team Alliance is one of the favorites to take the title at the Copa Pódio Heavyweight GP coming up Jan. 13 at Rio de Janeiro, Brazil’s Hebraica Club.

Nogueira, who trains out of the coastal São Paulo town of Guarujá, ended up in the Yellow Group, regarded as the “group of death”, and is pretty excited about it. “The Yellow Group is the toughest one. But that’s the course a champion takes; to win a competition, you have to beat the toughest competition in it,” he tells GRACIEMAG.com in the following interview.

In the interview, Léo also addresses his plans for the GP, his thoughts on taking on the brown belt Keenan Cornelius in the opening match, and much more.

GRACIEMAG: For the first round of the Heavyweight GP you got drawn up against Lloyd Irvin brown belt Keenan Cornelius right of the bat. What do you expect in this match?

LÉO NOGUEIRA: Man, I’ve seen that kid fight. He’s a really skillful guard player and is coming in with a lot of will to win. But I’m working on all my fundamentals, and I feel that I’ll do fine wherever it goes. However, I’ll be wary of the kid’s guard the whole time.

In the draw for the Heavyweight GP, you ended up in the group of death. What’s your assessment of your group in the competition?

It is certainly the toughest group. But that’s the course a champion takes; to win a competition, you have to beat the toughest competition. There’s nowhere to run. All the athletes in the group are on the same level. I feel they’re all favorites to win. And in a six-minute match, anything can happen.

How’s your training camp for the Heavyweight GP going?

I’m doing what I can to train hard. I’ve had the help of some great friends of mine training here in my home city, Guarujá, coastal São Paulo State. With the end-of-the-year festivities, it got harder to put together a good group to train with; but some friends of mine put in the sacrifice to help me out, like Fábio Romão, Teco Shinzato, Andrezão and Bruno Cargalho, whom I’m grateful to. Today training at Alliance headquarters in São Paulo is striking back up in full swing. I’m counting on everyone there’s help.

Copa Pódio will also be featuring a Couple’s Showdown. Which couple is your money on?

The couples are really evenly matched, both on the male side and the female side. It’s hard to pick, but I can speak from the results I’ve seen over the year: I see Leandro Lo as a favorite because of his titles, while Augusto Tanquinho isn’t far behind him at all. Between the girls, Luiza Monteiro had a great Worlds at black belt and is coming into this year strong, but Mackenzie’s coming in strong too, although she’s only just been promoted from brown belt. Picking a winner is a tough task, but based on results, I’ll say Luiza’s the favorite, although Mackenzie has plenty enough vigor to win, too.

What are your plans for 2013? More training with Mauricio Shogun and co. after the 2013 Worlds?

This year, I want to go for the world absolute title, God willing. I also want to compete at the 2013 ADCC, and at the end of the year I want to have an MMA fight. Up until halfway through the year I’m going to train in a lot of Gi and No-Gi Jiu-Jitsu. After that I’ll focus more on MMA.

Bicampeão mundial na faixa-preta, Leonardo Nogueira (Alliance) é um dos favoritos para o título do GP dos pesos pesados da Copa Pódio, marcada para o próximo 13 de janeiro, no clube do Hebraica, no Rio de Janeiro.

Sorteado na chave amarela, o chamado “grupo da morte”, Léo Nogueira tem treinado no Guarujá, no litoral de São Paulo, e está animado. “O grupo amarelo é o mais difícil. Mas assim é a trajetória de um campeão, para vencer a competição tem que ganhar dos mais duros”, diz Nogueira, em papo com o GRACIEMAG.com.

Na entrevista, Léo fala sobre os planos para o GP, o que ele pensa de lutar já na primeira rodada contra o faixa-marrom Keenan Cornelius e muito mais.

GRACIEMAG: Na primeira rodada do GP dos Pesados, pelo que ficou definido no sorteio você já enfrenta o faixa-marrom Keenan Cornelius, da escola de Lloyd Irvin. O que você espera dessa luta?

LÉO NOGUEIRA: Rapaz, já vi esse menino lutar, ele é um guardeiro muito habilidoso, e vem subindo com muita vontade de ganhar. Mas estou treinando todos os meus fundamentos, e creio que, onde eu cair na luta, vou conseguir me sair bem. Porém, vou estar sempre atento em relação à guarda do garoto.

No sorteio do GP dos Pesados, você acabou no grupo da morte. Como você avalia seu grupo na disputa?

Certamente esse grupo é o mais difícil. Mas assim é a trajetória de um campeão, para ganhar a competição é preciso vencer os concorrentes mais duros, não temos para onde correr. Todos os atletas estão bem nivelados nesse grupo, eu creio que todos são favoritos. E numa luta de seis minutos tudo pode acontecer!

Como está seu camp para a disputa do GP dos Pesados?

Estou fazendo o que posso para treinar forte. Tive a ajuda de grandes amigos para treinar aqui na minha cidade, no Guarujá, litoral de São Paulo. Com as festas de fim de ano ficou complicado manter a galera treinando, mas alguns amigos meus se sacrificaram para me ajudar, como o Fábio Romão, Teco Shinzato, Andrezão e Bruno Carvalho, aos quais agradeço. Hoje os treinos recomeçam com tudo na matriz da Alliance, em São Paulo. Conto com a ajuda de toda a galera lá!

A Copa Pódio também traz o Duelo de Casais. Em que dupla você aposta?

Os casais estão bem equilibrados, tanto no lado feminino quanto no masculino. Seria difícil apontar algum, mas posso falar baseado em resultados no ano inteiro. Vejo Leandro Lo como favorito devido aos títulos, mas o Augusto Tanquinho não fica devendo muito para ele não. Entre as meninas, a Luiza Monteiro fez um belo Mundial na faixa-preta, e vem forte esse ano, mas a Mackenzie veio forte também, apesar de estar chegando agora da faixa-marrom. Duro arriscar a vencedora, mas uma vez se baseando em resultados a Luiza vem como favorita, mas a Mackenzie vem com grande vigor para se sair vencedora também.

Quais seus sonhos para 2013? Mais treinos com Mauricio Shogun & cia após o Mundial de Jiu-Jitsu 2013?

Quero este ano buscar o título mundial absoluto, se Deus quiser, e vou fazer por onde. Também quero lutar o ADCC 2013 e no fim do ano pretendo fazer uma luta de MMA. Até o meio do ano vou treinar muito Jiu-Jitsu com e sem kimono, depois vou dar uma atenção a mais para o MMA.

O Campeonato Brasileiro de Jiu-Jitsu tem uma escrita curiosa no absoluto. Realizado anualmente desde 1994, o torneio só viu um bicampeão absoluto na faixa-preta, Fernando Tererê (2001 e 2003). O rodízio tradicional permaneceu vivo em 2012, e o novo rei veio da CheckMat de São Paulo, Nivaldo de Oliveira Lima.

O atleta meio-pesado faturou o ouro também na categoria, e comentou sua campanha com o GRACIEMAG.com. “Ao fazer frente com os melhores, essa vitória foi um sinal forte de que meu Jiu-Jitsu está em evolução”, disse.

1. De onde veio Nivaldo Oliveira?

Comecei a treinar onde eu nasci e fui criado, no Guarujá, em São Paulo. Hoje moro em Vicente de Carvalho, bairro mais conhecido por seu antigo nome, Itapema. Quando eu iniciei no Jiu-Jitsu, tinha 16 anos, era 1999. Comecei a treinar por causa do meu irmão mais velho, na época em que Royce Gracie lutava no UFC. Minha primeira equipe foi a Integração Jiu-Jitsu, liderada pelo Mestre Elcio Figueredo. Hoje, eu treino com Rodrigo Cavaca, e lá temos uma galera muito boa, com treino de muita qualidade. Treino com o Bochecha, Palito, Baiano, Thiago Magrinho, Ingmar, Renato Cardoso, entre outros.

2. Quando seus resultados começaram a aparecer no Jiu-Jitsu?

Acho que foi no início do ano passado, quando ganhei a seletiva de Abu Dhabi em Gramado. Desde então, comecei a me sentir bem nas competições. Já tinha chegado até as finais de Campeonatos Brasileiros, só que bati na trave duas vezes. Hoje em dia me sinto mais experiente e mais seguro.

3. Qual foi o pulo-do-gato na sua carreira?

Meu pulo-do-gato foi escutar os mais experientes na academia. Vi que era possível chegar ao topo com muita ralação. Quando você vê um cara que treina ao seu lado sendo campeão mundial, você sente que está no lugar certo para ser campeão. E só depende de você, se está feliz com o que está fazendo. Se você faz algo com amor não é sacrifício nenhum. A lição é procurar fazer as coisas certas e encurtar o caminho da vitória.

4. Quantas medalhas você tem agora no Brasileirão de Jiu-Jitsu?

Eu tinha sido ouro como faixa-roxa, agora tenho os dois títulos na preta. Já fui vice na marrom e duas vezes na faixa preta, além do terceiro lugar no absoluto de 2011.

5. Qual foi a principal lição que você tirou deste Campeonato Brasileiro?

Aprendi que tenho que lutar sem muita cobrança e sim lutar porque gosto. Com vontade de competir o resultado vem naturalmente.

6. Qual é sua técnica favorita? O que você acha que faz de diferente, para o oponente não conseguir defendê-la?

Gosto muito de jogar por baixo na meia-guarda, é uma posição muito eficiente. Aprendi muito esta técnica com o Lucas Leite, ela não é uma posição assim tão vista em campeonatos, são poucos os que a utilizam, ao meu ver. A diferença desta posição são alguns detalhes e especialmente suas variações, que deixam o oponente sem defesa.

7. E agora, quais as próximas metas?

Vem o Mundial aí, o foco principal do ano, em Long Beach no fim de maio. Depois do Mundial tem a Copa Pódio, para a qual fui convidado para lutar no GP dos Médios. Agora é focar na Califórnia, o Brasileiro já ficou no passado.

There’s a curious hex that looms over the absolute division of the Brazilian National Jiu-Jitsu Championship. Held annually since 1994, only a single black belt has ever won the open weight division on more than one occasion. That man was Fernando Tererê, the winner in 2001 and 2003. The traditional round-robin was upheld in 2012, and the new open-class king, Nivaldo Oliveira Lima, harks from CheckMat academy in São Paulo.

The medium heavyweight captured gold in his weight division as well, and he commented to GRACIEMAG.com about his achievements. “Having taken on the best, this win was a strong sign that my Jiu-Jitsu is evolving,” he said.

1. WHERE DOES NIVALDO OLIVEIRA COME FROM?

I started practicing where I was born and raised, Guarujá, São Paulo State. These days I live in Vicente de Carvalho, a neighborhood better known by its old name, Itapema. When I started out in Jiu-Jitsu I was 16 years old, in 1999. I started training because of my elder brother at about the time Royce Gracie was fighting in the UFC. The first team I was on was Integração Jiu-Jitsu, led by Master Elcio Figueredo. Nowadays I train with Rodrigo Cavaca, and we’ve got a good group there, really high-quality training. I train with Bochecha, Palito, Baiano, Thiago Magrinho, Ingmar, Renato Cardoso and others.

2. WHEN DID YOU START TO SEE YOUR JIU-JITSU PAY DIVIDENDS?

I think last year, when I won the tryouts for the Abu Dhabis in Gramado. Ever since, I’ve been feeling good in competition. I’d made it to the finals at the Brazilian Nationals before, but I came up short by a hair twice. These days I feel a lot more experienced and sure of myself.

3. WHAT WAS THE WATERSHED IN YOUR CAREER?

The watershed was listening to the more experienced guys at the academy. I saw that if I put in a lot of hard work I could make it to the top. When you see someone who trains with you become world champion, you feel you’re in the right place to become a champion yourself. And it all depends solely on you, if you’re happy with what you’re doing. If you do something for the love of it, there’s no sacrifice at all. The lesson is to strive to do things right and shorten the path to victory.

4. HOW MANY BRAZILIAN NATIONAL MEDALS DO YOU NOW HAVE?

I won gold as a purple belt, now I have two titles at black. I took runner-up at brown and twice at black, not to mention taking third place in the absolute in 2011.

5. WHAT’S THE MAIN LESSON YOU DERIVED FROM THIS BRAZILIAN NATIONALS?

I learned that I have to compete without demanding too much of myself, just compete because I like it. With the desire to compete the results come naturally.

6. WHAT’S YOUR FAVORITE TECHNIQUE? WHAT DO YOU FEEL YOU DO DIFFERENTLY, SO YOUR OPPONENT WON’T BE ABLE TO DEFEND?

I really like playing from the bottom in half-guard; it’s a really efficient position. I learned a lot about the technique from Lucas Leite. It’s not a position you see so often in championships; not too many people use it, in my opinion. What makes the difference in the position is some details and especially its variations, which render the opponent defenseless.

7. WHAT NOW, WHAT ARE YOUR NEXT GOALS?

The Worlds, the main focus of the year, is coming up in Long Beach at the end of this May. After the Worlds there’s Copa Pódio, to which I was invited to take part in the Middleweight GP. The focus now is in California, now the Brazilian Nationals are out of the way.

Equipe comandada por Ericson Cardozo, que conta com feras como o lutador do UFC Charles do Bronx, a Bronx’s Gold Team começou bem o ano de 2011. Nesta segunda-feira aconteceu, no Guarujá (SP), o Gladiator by Spank, e o time foi bem.

“Entramos com sete atletas e vencemos em todas as lutas”, conta Ericson.

“No submission, meu aluno Francisco Junior venceu por pontos Matheus Ribeiro (ACJJ), já eu venci o Marcos Pezão (Barbosa Jiu Jitsu) na decisão do árbitro. No boxe, o Emerson Naja (Naja Combat Team – Bronx’s) venceu o Junior Pinico (Top Team Master – Ivo Team) por decisão unânime. No muay thai, o Willian Santos (Naja Combat Team – Bronx’s) venceu o Iuri Carvalho da Silva (Terrier Fighter Team) por nocaute”, fala Ericson.

O treinador ainda festejou as vitórias de Alex da Silva (Naja Combat Team – Bronx’s) sobre Marcos Mugin (Top Team Master – Ivo Team) por nocaute e, no MMA, as de Junior Maranhão sobre Danilo Crocota (Top Team Master – Ivo Team), por nocaute, e Marcio Nunes (Bronx’s Gold Team) sobre Arlindo “AR15” (Top Team Master – Ivo Team) por decisão unânime.

Under the command of Ericson Cardozo, with fighters like the UFC’s Charles do Bronx in its ranks, Bronx’s Gold Team had a good start to 2011. The team had a fine showing at the Gladiator by Spank event held this Monday in Guarujá, São Paulo state.

“We took eight fighters and they all won,” recounts Ericson.

“In submission grappling, my student Francisco Junior beat Matheus Ribeiro (ACJJ) on points, while I beat Marcos Pezão (Barbosa Jiu-Jitsu) by referee decision. In boxing, Emerson Naja (Naja Combat Team – Bronx’s) beat Junior Pinico (Top Team Master – Ivo Team) via unanimous decision. In muay thai, Willian Santos (Naja Combat Team – Bronx’s) knocked out Iuri Carvalho da Silva (Terrier Fighter Team) by knockout,” says Ericson.

The trainer also celebrated the wins of Alex da Silva (Naja Combat Team – Bronx’s) over Marcos Mugin (Top Team Master – Ivo Team) via knockout and, in MMA, those of Junior Maranhão over Danilo Crocota (Top Team Master – Ivo Team), via knockout, and Marcio Nunes (Bronx’s Gold Team) over Arlindo “AR15” (Top Team Master – Ivo Team) via unanimous decision.

Segunda-feira é dia de luta no Guarujá, no litoral de São Paulo. Acontece no Clube Guaibe, a partir das 19h, o Brazil Gladiator by Spank. A pesagem aconteceu neste domingo, na academia Bronx’s Gold Team, como contra Ericson Cardozo.

“Além da presença do lutador do UFC Charles do Bronx, teremos o Emerson Naja numa luta de boxe, combates de submission, em que eu vou enfrentar o Marcos Pezão, lutas de muay thai e MMA. Vai ser bem bacana”, comenta o treinador.

All set for his September 15 challenge at UFN 22, and with his always slick Jiu-Jitsu, Charles had a conversation with GRACIEMAG.com:

The UFC quickly called you up for another fight, against a great fighter and in the co-main event. How does that make you feel?

I’m happy because my intention always was to fight the big names in the division.

What’s your breakdown on Efrain Escudero?

I feel he’s a really tough dude, who fights with a lot of heart. But I think Darren (last opponent) was more technical than he is.

You recently competed at a Jiu-Jitsu tourney (National Cup) and were brown belt champion. Do you intend to carry on competing in gi tournaments?

For sure, because it’s in my veins. Whenever I can, I’ll compete alongside my team, a true family.

What do Jiu-Jitsu championships like this one contribute to your MMA performance?

They keep up my rhythm and gas, since I have to do a number of matches on the same day and against better and better opponents.

What was it like to have your first fight in the UFC go so well, with the submission of the night?

It was a marvelous sensation and the result of lots of dedication in training. It lightened the burden of making my debut.

Last Monday the new headquarters of Bronx’s Gold Team, Charles’s team, was inaugurated in the city of Guarujá. The event counted more than sixty athletes in attendance, among them Cosmo Alexandre, Guto and Rodrigo Granola, among others. “I’m pleased with the new home and the most important part is that the athletes like it a lot. I’m certain a lot of champions will come out of here,” says trainer Ericson Cardozo.

Durante os dois dias as seletivas acontecem das 7h às 16h, no Ginásio Marivaldo Fernandes, o Guaibê. Atletas de todo o país estarão envolvidos em uma das competições esportiva mais importante da classe. Ao todo sao mais de 623 judocas inscritos de 17 estados.

Na categoria sub-17, competem meninos e meninas, com idade entre 15 e 16 anos. Já a sub-20 vai dos 17 aos 19 anos. O primeiro colocado de cada categoria garante uma vaga nos jogos.

Para Heitor Gonzalez da AEG, Guarujá é um dos locais mais indicados do Estado para realizar este tipo de competição. “São mais de 600 atletas, e o Ginásio Guaibê tem potencial para receber e acomodar bem este tipo de evento. Com esta seletiva na cidade temos a oportunidade de mostrar nossas instalações e proporcionar uma boa participação para todos.”

O Guaibê fica na Avenida Santos Dumont, 420, Santo Antônio. O torneio seletivo é aberto ao público e a entrada é gratuita.
