The first championship Gabriel Vella was in was in 1996, as a white belt. Since then he’s amassed 76 medals, many of which came in IBJJF competitions, in all the belt groups. Vella has held his place at the top like few have. Proof is in his world titles, one 2002 and the other in 2009, seven years later. The forty-year-old Dan Henderson is still at it raining on the parades of all the young fellows in MMA. After beating Renato Babalu and Rafael Feijão both by knockout, Hendo added another belt to his collection: the Strikeforce light heavyweight one.

An interview with the champion tipped to face Fedor Emelianenko in his next outing features on the pages of GRACIEMAG 169, now in bookstores, and of course he addressed his views on the gentle art.

“Jiu-Jitsu to me is key, combined with wrestling. Wrestling is a great foundation with which to control a fight, but you need Jiu-Jitsu or striking to finish the opponent. I love grappling, but the truth is I never put on a gi. I’d be lost in the gi!” remarks Henderson.

To help Hendo with his ground game, black belt Ricardo “Pantcho” Feliciano spares no effort.

“Henderson would give a lot of guys a hard time if he were to compete in at No-Gi tournaments. He really likes grappling – training on the bottom too. He’d tap out a lot of black belts,” asserts Pantcho.

She is today considered the top female fighter in the world. However, the Strikeforce champion doesn’t have it easy. In making it to the top, Cris Cyborg had to take on an extreme workload, as can be seen in the exclusive video below, where she does her physical conditioning work with coach Rafael Alejarra.

And Cyborg is also features in GRACIEMAG # 170, now in bookstores.

“I do what I must to win. When I’m in a competition, I give it my best. I always imagine my opponent is training as hard as I am, with the same intensity. But I don’t care who I’m going to face. I’ll face anyone they put in front of me,” says the champion.

Rubens Charles “Cobrinha” made history by winning four featherweight world titles. Rodolfo Vieira is still hunting for his first black belt world title, but it seems to be just a question of time before he gets it. At this year’s Pan and World Pro Rodolfo won both his weight division and the open weight division, thus shooting to the top of the current Jiu-Jitsu mix.

And it was fitting that an established name and another who is fast carving out a place in history for himself should determine who took top honors in Abu Dhabi. Check out the video of the match below:
