Want a taste of the latest issue of GRACIEMAG? Check it out:

“In this month’s TRAINING FOR WARRIORS column, Martin Rooney teaches: ‘When you take care of the details, the big things resolve themselves.’ Martin is referring to the minor flaws in athletes’ physical conditioning work. ‘If you don’t fix it soon, these flaws will grow with time, keeping you from reaching your goals,’ he concludes.

“There are other characters exalting the importance of details this issue. In TRAINING PROGRAM, for example, Kyra Gracie reveals the technical minutiae that make a huge difference when facing bigger and heavier opponents. In FACE TO FACE, Gabi Garcia assays the virtues that earned her the post of most victorious female Jiu-Jitsu competitor of 2011: ‘I save my energies, keep my focus and concentration. Those are minor details that make a champion,’ asserts Gabi.

“And they truly are, as you can confirm for yourself in the part two of “he 15 best of the best in the history of the Jiu-Jitsu World Championship”. Pay attention to the details, and study to find out how Rômulo Barral’s ‘blender’ guard works.

In GINÁSTICA NATURAL, learn how details turned the tides in Vitor Belfort’s favor at the Carlson student’s last UFC fight.

“In the DOSSIER that made this issue’s cover, notice how we didn’t address any grandiose and intricate moves. We could have talked about flying armbars, for example. However, we opted for a precious particular: the grip. Starting on page 50 you’ll find an article committed to proving that sinking a grip doesn’t merely mean ‘grabbing cloth.’ It’s one of the pillars of Jiu-Jitsu, one that can mean evolution in one’s style of fighting.”

“Fight always, lose perhaps, give up never.”

The photo with the aforementioned message in Portuguese was posted on Master Francisco Toco’s Facebook page. The thought is shared by anyone who has absorbed the true concepts behind the gentle art and applied them to the different situations that arise in daily life. It’s no exaggeration to say that the lessons we learn from getting put through the wringer, from the victories, and from the words of our masters in the dojo serve us for our whole lives.

One example of this can be found on the pages of the latest GRACIEMAG, when the sixth biggest winner of World Championships, Robson Moura, addresses the fourth biggest winner of the competition, Marcelo Garcia.

“I’ve never trained with or competed against Marcelo but I’ve learned a lot from the grand champion that he is. He seems to have understood Jiu-Jitsu and its values from an early age. He’s never afraid. He learned to tap out when he was in the beginning stages, especially when he started sticking his neck out in absolutes despite being a middleweight. His love for Jiu-Jitsu did the rest, and if he’s an idol today it’s because he never gave up,” says Robson.

The day began and Pedro invited me to see what he does for work and make a living while not training. He’s a well-established paparazzo, a profession that pays well but is frowned upon by some. While cruising through Beverly Hills and Hollywood, checking out the bell in front of Christina Aguilera’s house, waiting on Cameron Diaz in the parking lot of a restaurant, and snapping shots of Jennifer Lopez, the fighter recounted some of the ordeals he’s been through where Jiu-Jitsu has saved his skin:

“In most cases actors like us taking pictures of them because it helps get their image out there, puts them in the media, and they need that. But some folks – non-artists – get upset and try to intervene. One time I was with some colleagues in front of a restaurant and some guy got out of his car carrying a crowbar and tried to assault us. I had to take him down and hold him there until the police arrived. One of the paparazzi filmed what happened and showed the police, who agreed we were in the right. But we didn’t lodge a complaint, since he got a good enough lesson as it was.”

Ultimately, just how important are grips in Jiu-Jitsu training and competition? In GRACIEMAG #174, now at bookstores, we illustrate how grips, like technique and physical conditioning, can make all the difference when it’s time to compete. To what point are they essential, how do you perfect them?

“I like doing pullups with the gi and climbing rope. I also like hanging a gi on a bar and hanging on as long as I can. That helps me to find my comfort zone when competing,” says Rômulo Barral.

Bernardo tests his grip against Lagarto.
“It’s common to feel pain after the first match of a championship. Our bodies are pumped full of adrenaline and we exert ourselves more than we need to. To get used to that, I train while already exhausted at the academy. Once I’m already fully fatigued, I do another two rolls. That way I learn to deal with this type of situation,” says Bernardo Faria.

The post Quando o Jiu-Jitsu salvou o paparazzo first appeared on Graciemag.

In issue 174, now in bookstores, GRACIEMAG drew parallels between Rio de Janeiro and San Diego, cities in two different countries but that have plenty in common, like, for instance, having taken a shine for Jiu-Jitsu. Doing exercise on the beach, lots of places to train, surf, nature… The two places provide similar lifestyle options.

And to round things out, there are also pointers on healthy eating and exercising on the beach.

Rio de Janeiro native Rodrigo Madeiros, a Carlson Gracie black belt, has been living in San Diego for years. Our GMA won’t do without a good session of surfing at Pacific Beach, between classes at BJJ Revolution Team. Nevertheless, training is going full steam.

In the video below, Rodrigo shows a number of tips to perfecting your sweeps when your opponent tries to open guard on his feet.

To learn further techniques and tips from the crew in California, get your copy of GRACIEMAG 174 and subscribe here to receive future issues in the comfort of your own home. Check out Rodrigo teaching class below:
