“I was called on to head Jiu-Jitsu and MMA training and, when I saw the project, I picked up and left with my whole family for Santos. We have a lot of talent that will provide a lot to talk about, whether it be in Jiu-Jitsu or in MMA,” says Nigue.

More than just a training center, Memorial Arena provides opportunity for athletes from needy communities looking for a better life through the martial arts. Besides Jiu-Jitsu, there’s muay thai, boxing and MMA training in a ring and cage. The training center and its integrants work hand in hand with the project aiming to spread MMA and the fighting arts throughout the country, previously reported here on GRACIEMAG.com (see here).

Major backers of the fighting arts, the center’s proprieters Pepe and his son Denys Altstut work hard for the cause. Mr. Pepe, 74, is an unconditional martial arts lover. Originally from Argentina, martial arts was a springboard to success.

“When I was a child, I lived in a lower-class neighborhood in Argentina and I had to learn boxing to defend myself. After entering the gym, I never fought again. I competed often and would become friends with my opponents. Martial arts is something wonderful and can improve the lives of many,” he recounts with excitement, after a boxing session at the academy.

The center is the training grounds for a number of great fighters, like muay thai world champion Cosmo Alexandre, Fabio Maldonado, Alan Froes and Diego Sebastião. One who recently paid a visit to lend support was Rodrigo Minotauro, who approved of what he saw there.

“Fui convocado para comandar os treinos de Jiu-Jitsu e MMA e, quando vi o projeto, parti com toda a família para Santos. Estamos com muitos talentos que vão dar muito o que falar, seja no Jiu-Jitsu ou no MMA”, conta Marcelo Nigue.   

Mais que um centro de treinamentos, a Memorial Arena dá oportunidade a atletas que vêm de comunidades carentes e procuram melhorar a vida através das artes marciais. Além do Jiu-Jitsu, há no local treinos de muay thai, boxe e MMA, com ringue e um cage. O CT e seus integrantes trabalham ao lado do projeto que visa difundir o MMA e as lutas por todo o país, noticiado aqui no GRACIEMAG.com (ver aqui). 

Grandes apoiadores das lutas, proprietários do CT, Pepe e o filho Denys Altstut trabalham pela causa. Senhor Pepe, de 74 anos, é um amante incondicional das artes marciais. Natural da Argentina, a luta foi um dos alicerces que o levaram ao sucesso. 

“Quando criança, vivia num bairro de periferia na Argentina e precisei aprender o boxe para me defender. Depois que entrei na academia, jamais briguei novamente. Lutei muitas vezes e me tornava amigo dos adversários. A luta é algo magnífico e pode melhorar a vida de muitos”, conta empolgado, após uma sessão de boxe na academia. 

Treinam no CT algumas feras como o campeão mundial de muay thai Cosmo Alexandre, Fabio Maldonado, Alan Froes e Diego Sebastião. Quem também esteve por lá para dar apoio recentemente foi Rodrigo Minotauro, que aprovou o espaço.

WPMF muay thai world champion, WMC intercontinental champion, It’s Show Time champion and King Cup – Thailand’s main event – champion Cosmo Alexandre isn’t just the best striker in Brazil at present, but is one of the most respected on the planet. The fighter hopes to make his MMA debut soon and, thus, dove into Jiu-Jitsu training with Coach Marcelo Nigue at Gracie Memorial Arena Santos in São Paulo.

GRACIEMAG.com had the following chat with the figher:

How are your preparations for your MMA debut going?

I’m training hard with Marcelo Nigue, working hard on my ground game. At first I’d only train countering on the ground, for the ref to bring the fight back to the feet. But, as I don’t like doing anything halfway, I told Nigue that I wanted to train in the gi to surprise some people. I want to get the submission and sweep. I train a lot in the gi and I’m ready. I’m just waiting to make my debut.

But did you  have prior Jiu-Jitsu experience?

I did some training a while back, but I was kind of just playing around. Now I’m serious about it. I didn’t think I’d enjoy it so much because strikers have a prejudice against Jiu-Jitsu. But I’m surprised how I’ve taken to it and, as I just fought muay thai two weeks ago, now I’m training more on the ground than standing. Now I’m training Jiu-Jitsu and will never stop.

You lived in Thailand in the past. What was that experience like?

I knew I had to do something about my career because it’s hard to make a living in muay thai in Brazil. So I wanted to go to where the cream of the crop in the sport is, where the best muay thai in the world is. I spent a year in Thailand I I’m always going back. There’s no better place and every muay thai fighter should go not just to fight, but because that’s where the sport’s culture is.

What was it like participating in the muay thai reality show that was so successful in Europe?

It was great. There was already a good-sized market in Asia, but doors needed to be opened in Europe. I made it to the final and ended up losing on points, but Europe was where it all started for me.

Why don’t they call you up for K-1? Do you expect them to invite you?

These days it’s better for me to fight at It’s Show Time than to be in K-1. First, because I can fight in my weight group, which doesn’t exist in K-1. They have either the under 70kg division or the heavyweight division. There’s also a lot of bureaucracy in K-1 and they take a long time paying the fighters’ purses. Furthermore, these days in Europe It’s Show Time is much bigger than K-1. I can fight in other organizations because the contract isn’t exclusive, even though I’m the current under 77kg champion. The event is held in high regard in Europe and I’m happy there.

Campeão mundial de muay thai pela WPMF, campeão intercontinental pela WMC, campeão do It’s Show Time e campeão do Kings Cup, maior evento da Tailândia, Cosmo Alexandre não é apenas o maior striker brasileiro da atualidade, mas um dos mais respeitados em todo o planeta. O lutador espera estrear no MMA em breve e, para isso, se entregou aos treinamentos de Jiu-Jitsu com o professor Marcelo Nigue, na Memorial Arena Gracie Santos, em São Paulo.

GRACIEMAG.com conversou com a fera, confira:

Como está a preparação para estrear no MMA?  

Estou treinando muito com o Marcelo Nigue, trabalhando muito a parte de chão. No começo, treinava apenas o anti-jogo no chão, para o juiz mandar levantar. Mas, como não gosto de fazer nada pela metade, disse ao Nigue que queria treinar de kimono também para surpreender. Quero finalizar e raspar. Treino muito de kimono e estou preparado. Só espero a estreia mesmo.

Mas você já tinha experiência no Jiu-Jitsu?

Há um tempo atrás,  cheguei a treinar. Mas era meio na brincadeira. Sério mesmo só agora. Achei que não ia gostar tanto, porque o pessoal striker tem aquele preconceito com o Jiu-Jitsu. Mas estou surpreso e, como lutei muay thai tem umas duas semanas, estou treinando agora mais chão que em pé. Estou treinando Jiu-Jitsu e não paro mais.

Você já morou na Tailândia. Como foi essa experiência?

Sabia que tinha que fazer alguma coisa para a minha carreira, porque era difícil viver do muay thai no Brasil. Então quis ir para a nata do esporte, onde o muay thai é o maior do mundo. Fui passar um ano na Tailândia e sempre volto. Não há nada melhor e todo lutador de muay thai deveria ir, não apenas pela luta, mas pela cultura do esporte.

Como foi participar de um reality show de muay thai, que teve bastante sucesso na Europa?

Foi muito bom. Já tinha um mercado bom na Ásia, mas precisava abrir as portas na Europa. Fui para a final do programa e acabei perdendo por pontos, mas foi onde tudo começou para mim a Europa.

Porque não te chamam para o K-1? Tem essa expectativa?

Hoje, para mim, lutar no It’s Show Time é melhor que estar no K-1. Primeiro, porque consigo lutar na minha categoria de peso, que não existe no K-1. Lá tem até 70kg ou então a categoria de pesadões.Depois, porque no K-1 tem uma burocracia muito grande de demoram muito a pagar as bolsas. Além disso, hoje, na Europa, o It’s Show Time é muito maior que o K-1. Lá eu posso lutar em outras organizações, porque não há exclusividade, apesar de eu ser o atual campeão 77kg. A galera valoriza muito o evento na Europa e estou tranquilão lá.
