The IBJJF Houston Open is one of the biggest Jiu-Jitsu Championships in the USA and its last edition happened this past Feb. 7-8, 2015. The event had, one more time, Gracie Barra Texas as the winning team. It is unheard to have a team that won an IBJJF Open Championship in American soil for 6 times in a row. GB is maintaining its position as the number one BJJ organization in results and number of schools in the state of Texas.

This Feb. 28 the winning team will be hosting a special benefit seminar to help a little girl battle Leukemia:

One of our long-standing students, Kaiy Matthews, needs our help! Kaiy, an orange belt under Professor Draculino, was recently diagnosed with Acute Myeloid Leukemia (AML). Kaiy is currently undergoing treatments at St. Jude’s Texas Children’s Hospital and is responding well to his treatments. The Matthews family has a long battle ahead of them and could use all the support we can give.

Professor Draculino is holding a Special Benefit Seminar for Kaiy, where all proceeds will go to the Matthews family in order to help them with their battle. Professor Eduardo De Lima, one of Master Carlos Gracie Jr’s right hand men, will host the Seminar! An expert in submission defense/escapes, there will be a ton of valuable information being taught that can help strengthen everyone’s jiu-jitsu game.

The Seminar will be help on Saturday, February 28th at 11:00am. Minimum donation to attend is $50, but any and all donations are appreciated. This will be a special seminar and there will be numerous black belts on the mat, including Kaiy’s father, Professor Jeremiah Matthews (one of Professor Draculino’s first Black Belts from his Texas academy)! The Gracie Barra Texas head instructor has been training Jiu-Jitsu for thirty years and his wisdom is priceless.

Brandon Mullins of GMA Gracie Barra Texas traveled to San Juan, Costa Rica for a seminar on Nov. 16 that raised funds for Typhoon Hainan relief efforts in the Philippines. A black belt under Vinicius Draculino Magalhaes, Brandon is an active competitor and instructor who helped GMA Gracie Barra San Juan, Costa Rica raise the funds for charity.

The seminar was last minute but they were able to raise $400 from the participants, $600 from those who wanted to help but couldn’t attend and $400 that was matched by the academy to make a total of $1400! The proceeds went to the American Red Cross.

In 2008, Vinicius ‘Draculino’ Magalhaes entered the Pan Jiu-Jitsu No-Gi Championship and won his division at the age of thirty-seven. The black belt leader is the coach of current champions such as Romulo Barral and Samuel Braga and continues to pass on his knowledge to students at his GMA academy Gracie Barra Texas in Houston.

That was the first year of the annual event. The 2013 edition of the event is set for Saturday, September 28 at its New York City location in the Nat Holman Gymnasium of the City College of New York.

Registration is open however the athlete list has now reached 60% capacity.

So, register now and make your travel arrangements to confirm your presence at the Pan Jiu-Jitsu No-Gi Championship before it’s too late.

If Jiu-Jitsu is a bona fide game of human chess, it’s important that you have a command of the game. For practitioners or fighters with an inclination for passing guard, the objective should always be checkmate, achieved by imposing your game and smooshing up any guard-players to pop up on the game board.

But there are risks involved in attacking, like getting tangled up in the guard-player’s hooks. If you find that you always end up getting flipped onto your back when trying to pass, our GMA Vinicius “Draculino” Magalhães, the headmaster at Gracie Barra Texas, has the solution for you. Make the most of it being Saturday to study and progress.

As Draculino makes clear, it all comes down to a simple detail—just turn the unhooked leg backwards and like magic you annul the opponent’s leverage. Take note that all you need to do if he tries to sink a grip is distance yourself.

Draculino at the GB Jiu-Jitsu training camp

Professor Vinicius Magalhaes, leader of GMA member school Gracie Barra Texas, travelled to Irvine, California, the week before the IBJJF Worlds Masters & Seniors to teach a special training camp.

We paid a visit to him during one of the classes and captured him teaching three guard pass techniques.

Monday through Friday this week, from 10:30AM to 12:30PM, nearly 70 Gracie Barra students gather at the team’s headquarters, in Irvine.

There, they meet for their team’s training camp for the first ever Worlds Master & Senior, with four-degree black belt Vinicius “Draculino” Magalhães at the helm.

The leader of Gracie Barra Texas traveled to California specially for this one.

“The turnout was great, and the guys’ skill are evolving on a daily basis. It’s amazing”, says Draculino in celebration.

The professor gave a hard time to his students

GRACIEMAG.com paid a visit to the camp last Tuesday, when Draculino dedicated the morning to teaching guard passes.

After showing three movements, the professor supervises his students, giving pointers whenever he sees something wrong.

To one of them, he gives more of a philosophical lesson, but also a very practical one: “In the master & senior divisions, you can’t afford to make a mistake. You have to get ahead on the scoreboard. There isn’t much time to comeback. So, when you get to a position, make sure you get the points before going for the submission,” lectures Draculino, after seeing a student going for the armbar before stabilizing a mount.

It’s two hours of intense training, and those who are competing train harder.

“You have to get ready here! They are getting in shape physically and technically. At the end of the last day, I am going to give them a nice speech so they get in the right mindset to compete”.

Vinicius Draculino to teach training camp at GB America

The 1st ever World Championship for Master & Senior athletes is coming up next October 7th, in Long Beach, California.

With that in view, GMA member team Gracie Barra decided to offer a very special training camp for its students.

Professor Vinícius “Draculino” Magalhães, leader of GB Texas, will be at GB America, in Irvine, to conduct the training.

The fifth degree black belt will be teaching in California from October 1st to October 5th.

The cost is $125 and there is a limit of 50 spots.

Only blue belts and up can participate.

GMA member Vinicius Draculino had a very special ceremony last August 30th.

The 5th degree black belt gathered some of his black belts for a graduation evening at Gracie Barra Texas.

GMA member Ulpiano Malachias (GB Westchase) and Brandon Mulins got their 2nd degree; Pablo Silva and Tyler B got their 1st degree to the black belt.

The event had the presence of 12 black belts in total, including Erik Wanderley, Tammy Greco and Ted stickel.

Overall, over 100 students were present.

Each professor awarded with new degrees taught the group his favorite position.

Girls in Gis, an organization fostering the practice of Jiu-Jitsu by women, is getting in the spirit of giving this holiday season by holding its first donation drive to help those in need.

Backed by the Texas Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu community and captained by the leader of Gracie Barra Texas women’s team Fabiana Borges, the Girls in Gis Wish List Donation Drive will directly benefit the SafePlace shelter in Austin, Texas.

SafePlace Austin –– a resource for sexual assault and domestic violence survivors­­ –– promotes a 24-hour hotline, hospital accompaniment, shelter and counseling services for female victims, as well as their children. It also avails programs for educating, awareness building and teaching clients about assessing resources.

The aim of the Girls in Gis Wish List Donation Drive is to provide necessary items and spread word about the services and resources available at SafePlace.

The Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu community in Texas has been overwhelmingly supportive of the endeavor so far, with over twenty-two academies, including all three Gracie Barra Austin locations, offering their facilities as collection sites for students and the public to make donations..

Girls in Gis Donation Drive runs through January 20, and a free event will be promoted at Gracie Barra North Austin on January 22 by the black belt Borges.

“I hope to share a little bit of my knowledge of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and show them how it can be helpful,” Borges said. “I want to help them build self-confidence and learn how to stand up for themselves through Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.”

Women and girls of all ages and all skill levels affiliated with any academy are invited to take part in the inaugural Girls in Gis self-defense event for free. Borges will also volunteer her services to provide the clients of SafePlace with rape-prevention and self-defense classes on a regular basis starting in January 2012.

“I also want to show the clients that they don’t need to be athletic to train, as the Gracie Barra slogan says: ‘Jiu-Jitsu for Everyone.’ Everyone can train and learn Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu,” Borges said. “I love to teach people that are hungry to learn, and it makes me happy to know that I am helping people with my knowledge.”

As a part of the drive, Girls in Gis will be holding a competition between their members to see who can bring in the most wish list items for SafePlace. Girls in Gis swag baskets will be awarded to all the Girls in Gis members from the winning academy. Prizes will be presented at the Girls in Gis Austin event.
