The date was September 24, 2001, less than two weeks after the attacks.

Don Frye was set to fight Gilbert Yvel in Japan, as part of Pride 16, but his heart was with the people of New York and all the other victms.

He entered the arena holding a masted American flag and a t-shirt that read Terrorists Sucks in the front and Air Force in the back.

This Saturday’s UFC 121 show in Anaheim, California, crowned a new champion. Cain Velasquez ran rampant over Brock Lesnar and is the new king of the heavyweights. In the other fights on the main card, Jake Shields, Diego Sanchez, Matt Hamill, and Brendan Schaub all came up on the right end of the judges’ decisions. Brock Lesnar vs Cain Velasquez

He was undefeated in MMA (9 wins), and so he remains, but now he possesses the coveted UFC heavyweight belt. Brock Lesnar went guns a blazing after his adversary and managed the takedown. But one of Cain’s never-fold spirit. With his enviable endurance, he got out from bottom position and started firing off rounds on Lesnar standing and on the ground. Brock tried to escape, but ended up groggily losing his balance. And the challenger continued to tee off till the bout was called to an end, after 4:12 min of combat. Now Cain will have to defend his title against Brazil’s Junior Cigano, who will be looking to avenge mentor Rodrigo Minotauro’s loss at UFC 110. Brock humbly admitted that his opponent was better on the night.

Jake Shields vs. Martin Kampann

Strikeforce middleweight champion Jake Shields entered the UFC scene as the man tipped to beat the promotion’s current welterweight champion, George St.-Pierre. However, the Cesar Gracie black belt’s welcome matchup wasn’t smooth sailing against Martin Kampmann. During the fight, Shields managed to take the fight to the ground, pass guard, mount, and get back mount, but not without showing significant fatigue for his efforts. Kampann got the best of the standup action and landed damaging knees. In the end, the scorecards gave Shields the nod by split decision, the fighter’s fifteenth win in a row.

Diego Sanchez vs. Paulo Thiago

Diego Sanchez and Paulo Thiago put on a show for the crowd. In the opening round, the officer from Brazil’s Bope police special forces unit had the upper hand. He landed solid strikes standing, got the takedown, and made things complicated for his rival with an arm-triangle. In the second, Diego took the initiative to bring the action to the ground. Paulo managed to invert the situation with a sightly overhead sweep, but Sanchez returned the attack with a swooping takedown. In the final round, Diego returned his efforts to the takedown, achieveing back mount and controlling the fight. A well-earned unanimous decision for the American followed, now recovering from back-to-back losses.

Matt Hamill vs. Tito Ortiz

Matt Hamill was the better fighter, was more effective striking and in takedowns. Over the three rounds, he took the fight to the ground and worked the ground-and-pound to his advantage, throwing strikes and elbows. Tito tried to react, but he had nothing potent to throw at his opponent. After the final bell, the unanimous decision went to Hamill, who notches his fifth win in a row in the UFC.

Gabriel Gonzaga vs. Brendan Schaub

Brendan Schaub felt right at home against Gabriel Napão. The entire three-round affair played out on the feet. He went to his boxing and managed to take the Brazilian to the ground with a first-round knockdown. Throwing good striking combinations, Brendan dominated the fight, avoided his opponent’s Jiu-Jitsu, and took the unanimous judges’ decision.

O UFC 121, em Anaheim, na Califórnia, fez um novo campeão neste sábado. Cain Velasquez detonou Brock Lesnar e é o novo rei dos pesos peados. Em outras lutas do card principal, mandaram bem Jake Shields, Diego Sanchez, Matt Hamill e Brendan Schaub. Confira os resultados e análises dos principais combates:

Brock Lesnar x Cain Velasquez

Invicto no MMA (9v), assim continua Cain Velasquez, só que agora com o cinturão de pesados do UFC afivelado. Brock Lesnar partiu com tudo para cima e derrubou o adversário. Mas uma das grandes virtudes de Cain é jamais desistir. Dono de um fôlego invejável, saiu de baixo e passou a metralhar Lesnar com socos, seja em pé ou ao chão. Brock tentou se desvencilhar, mas, tonto, caiu desequilibrado. Viu o oponente continuar socando até o combate ser separado, aos 4min12s. Agora o próximo oponente de Cain deve ser o brasileiro Junior Cigano, que poderá vingar a vitória do campeão sobre Rodrigo Minotauro, no UFC 110. Já a Brock restou admitir, humildemente, que o oponente foi melhor nesta noite.      

Jake Shields x Martin Kampmann

Campeão do Strikeforce, Jake Shields chegou ao UFC como o homem indicado a bater o atual campeão de meio-médios, Georges St. Pierre. Entretanto, o faixa-preta de Cesar Gracie não teve moleza na estreia contra Martin Kampmann. Durante a luta, Shields conseguiu quedar, conquistou posições como a passagem de guarda, montada e costas, mas se cansou bastante. Kampmann foi melhor na trocação e acertou boas joelhadas. No fim, as papeletas anotaram decisão dividida para Shields, que chega à 15ª vitória seguida.     

Diego Sanchez x Paulo Thiago

Um espetáculo para o público fizeram Diego Sanchez e Paulo Thiago. No assalto inicial, o policial do Bope foi muito bem. Encaixou bons socos, derrubou e incomodou com o triângulo de braço. Na segunda parcial, quem derrubou foi Diego. Paulo reverteu com uma bela raspagem de balão, mas Sanchez devolveu o ataque com uma queda que levantou o brasileiro alto. Na última etapa, Diego voltou a quedar, pegou as costas e administrou bem. Merecida vitória por decisão unânime do americano, que se recuperou de duas derrotas seguidas.

Matt Hamill x Tito Ortiz

Matt Hamill foi melhor, mais efetivo na trocação e nas quedas. Nos três rounds, derrubou e trabalhou bem no ground and pound, com socos e cotoveladas. Tito tentava reagir, mas não conseguia acertar forte o oponente. Depois do gongo final, decisão unânime a favor de Hamill, que chega à quinta vitória seguida no UFC.

Gabriel Gonzaga x Brendan Schaub

Brendan Schaub se sentiu em casa na luta contra Gabriel Napão. Nos três rounds de combate, lutou em pé, na trocação de socos. Pôde usar bem o boxe e, no primeiro assalto, conseguiu derrubar o brasileiro em konckdown. Com boas combinações de socos, Brendan dominou o combate, evitou o Jiu-Jitsu do adversário, e faturou a decisão unânime dos jurados.

On February 26, 2000, Renato “Babalu” Sobral was riding a twelve-fight winning streak, two of them on the same night. At Japan’s Rings tournament, Babalu faced Dan Henderson in the final, before which he defeated fighters the likes of Gilbert Yvel and Rodrigo Minotauro. In the deciding bout for the event, the now-Gracie Barra black belt ended up beaten in a hard-fought battle, losing by majority decision.

A little over ten years later, the matchup will resurface, now at the December Strikeforce event. In a conversation with GRACIEMAG.com, Babalu remarks on the challenge:

You’ve faced off in the past. What are your thoughts on this rematch with Henderson?

I feel this fight has nothing to do with the first one. It’s happening ten years later and I see the opportunity as a celebration of my career, coming full circle. As they say: The world is round, it goes around. Ten years later we meet again and it’s unbelievable. I’m going to go after him to beat the hell out of him! I’m going in there with all the happiness in the world for being able to face him again after having been through so much.

What’s changed for you and him since the first fight?

Everything’s changed, be it in training, preparations and vision. It’s easier to talk about what has not changed. What hasn’t changed is my heart, that’s still the same. And his too seems to be the same. We’ll be in the event’s main event and I hope that it’s the fight of the year.

If you win this fight, do you feel next up will be a fight for the title that was once yours?

My challenge is Dan Henderson. I’m not thinking about anything after that. My focus is 100% on him.

There’s a big chance the fight will play out on the ground. Could Jiu-Jitsu be your main weapon against Henderson?

Jiu-Jitsu is always a fatal weapon, like Werdum proved against Fedor. It’s fatal, like a punch on the chin, and I’m training a lot. If he falters, he’s out!

Henderson left the UFC and ended up losing in his Strikeforce debut against Jake Shields. Do you feel that may have shaken his confidence?

I don’t want to know about it. If that’s how he feels, I want to bury him once and for all!

How are you going to go about preparing from here on out?

There’s a tough crew helping me out. Rafael Cordeiro is my main coach for this fight, Werdum’s with me and Ratinho’s taking care of the grappling part. There’s also Mark Munoz in wrestling, Jason Miller and a bunch of others. It’s a big crew, there’s no way to name them all.

No torneio do Rings, no Japão, Babalu encarou na final Dan Henderson, que, nas eliminatórias, derrotara pedreiras como Gilbert Yvel e Rodrigo Minotauro. Na decisão do evento, o hoje faixa-preta da Gracie Barra acabou abatido, numa disputa duríssima, por decisão majoritária.

Pouco mais de dez anos depois, o combate vai se repetir, agora pelo Strikeforce, em dezembro. Em conversa com o GRACIEMAG.com, Babalu comenta o desafio:

Vocês já se enfrentaram. O que acha dessa revanche contra o Henderson?

Acho que essa luta não tem nada a ver com a primeira. Ela acontece dez anos depois e encaro essa oportunidade como uma celebração da minha carreira, um ciclo que se completa. Como dizem: o mundo é redondo, ele dá voltas. Dez anos depois estamos nos encontrando e é incrível. Vou partir para cima, para meter a porrada! Vou com toda a felicidade do mundo por lutar com ele novamente depois de tanta coisa.

O que mudou em você e nele desde o primeiro combate?

Mudou tudo, seja no treinamento, preparação e visão de luta. É mais fácil falar o que não mudou. O que não mudou é o meu coração, isso é a mesma coisa. E o dele também parece que é o mesmo. Faremos a luta principal do evento e espero que seja o combate do ano.

Se vencer essa luta, acredita que em seguida você deve disputar o cinturão, que já foi seu?

Meu desafio é o Dan Henderson. Não penso em nada para depois disso. Meu foco é 100% nele.

Existe uma possibilidade bem grande de a luta ir para o chão. O Jiu-Jitsu pode ser a principal arma contra o Henderson?

O Jiu-Jitsu é sempre uma arma fatal, como o Werdum provou na luta contra o Fedor. É fatal, igual a um soco no queixo, e eu estou treinando muito. Se bobear dançou!

O Henderson saiu do UFC e acabou derrotado na estreia pelo Strikeforce, contra o Jake Shields. Acha que isso pode ter abalado a confiança dele?

Não quero saber disso. Se ele se sente assim, quero é enterrá-lo de vez!

Como vai se preparar daqui em diante?

Tem uma galera forte para me ajudar. O Rafael Cordeiro é o meu principal treinador para esta luta, o Werdum vai estar comigo e tem o Ratinho na parte de chão. Também conto com o Mark Munoz no wrestling, Jason Miller e muitos outros. É uma galera grande, não dá nem para falar todos.

Renato Babalu will face Dan Henderson at the December 4 Strikeforce show in St. Louis, Missouri, according to an article on MMAJunkie.com. Henderson is coming off a loss to Jake Shields last April, on his organizational debut. Now Babalu, the former light heavyweight champion of the event, is coming off a win over Robbie Lawler in June.

And there’s history to the bout. Henderson beat the Gracie Barra black belt in February 2000 at Japan’s now-defunct Rings promotion.

On a single evening, Babalu submitted Russia’s Mikhail Illoukhine with an armbar and then went past Japan’s Kiyoshi Tamura via majority decision. At the other end of the tournament bracket, Henderson beat Dutch bruiser Gilbert Yvel via unanimous decision and then went past no less than Rodrigo Minotauro by split decision. In the grand finale, Hendo again eked out a win, this time by majority decision.

Renato Babalu encara Dan Henderson no Strikeforce do dia 4 de dezembro, em St. Louis, Missouri, segundo reportagem do MMAJunkie.com. Henderson vem de derrota para Jake Shields, em abril, quando estreou na organização. Já Babalu, ex-campeão do evento entre os meio-pesados, vem de vitória sobre Robbie Lawler, em junho.

E o combate tem história. Henderson bateu o faixa-preta da Gracie Barra em fevereiro de 2000, em luta pelo saudoso Rings, no Japão.

Na mesma noite, Babalu finalizou o russo Mikhail Illoukhine com uma chave de braço e depois passou por Kiyoshi Tamura, do Japão, na decisão majoritária. Do outro lado da chave do torneio, Hendersou venceu a fera da Holanda Gilbert Yvel em decisão unânime e depois passou por nada e menos que Rodrigo Minotauro por decisão dividida. Na grande decisão, Hendo novamente se deu bem por pouco, em decisão majoritária.

Strikeforce has been shoveling big money into signings and officially announced another top fighter for its roster. Josh Barnett is the latest big name to join the heavyweight ranks and stir up a division that has Alistair Overeem as its champion, and Fedor Emelianenko, Fabrício Werdum and Antonio Pezão, among others, on his tailcoats.

At thirty-two years of age, Barnett carries a lot of experience with him. He was the youngest UFC champion at twenty-four, and has a technical knockout win over Randy Couture on his résumé. Also notable are his wins over the likes of Rodrigo Minotauro, Semmy Schilt, Mark Hunt, Gilbert Yvel and Pedro Rizzo, among others.

“Strikeforce is home to the best heavyweights in the world and I’m proud to call it my home now, too,” said Josh in jubilation.

“I’m anxious to compete with the best fighters in the world and to get another world title,” says the fighter riding a six-fight win streak.

O Strikeforce vem investindo forte nas contratações e anuncia oficialmente mais um atleta de peso para o plantel de lutadores da organização. E bota peso nisso, pois se trata do peso pesado Josh Barnett, mais uma fera que chega para complicar a categoria que conta com Alistair Overeem como campeão, além de pedreiras como Fedor Emelianenko, Fabrício Werdum e Antonio Pezão, entre outros. 

Com 32 anos de idade, Barnett tem bastante experiência. Foi o mais jovem campeão do UFC, aos 24 anos, com vitória por nocaute técnico sobre Randy Couture. Além disso, fez boas apresentações no Pride e em outras organizações, com vitórias sobre feras como Rodrigo Minotauro, Semmy Schilt, Mark Hunt, Gilbert Yvel e Pedro Rizzo, entre muitos outros. 

“O Strikeforce é a casa dos melhores pesos pesados do mundo e tenho orgulho de também chamá-lo de minha casa agora”, festeja Josh, que quer fazer barulho. 

“Estou ansioso para competir entre os maiores lutadores do mundo e por outro título mundial”, adianta ele, que vem numa série de seis triunfos.

O paulista Thiago Silva e o ex-campeão dos pesos meio-pesados Rashad Evans fazem a luta principal da noite e prometem um confronto cheio de trocação, em que qualquer um pode cair.

“Eu treinei muito wrestling, submission e trocação.Estou pronto, cara”, declarou o brasileiro ao repórter do MMA Weekly.com.

Esse será um momento importante tanto para Rashad quanto para Silva. O americano precisa recuperar o prestígio de campeão dos meio-pesados de volta e o brasileiro, além de estar fazendo pela primeira vez em sua carreira a luta principal do UFC, não pensa em outra coisa a não ser em enfrentar o responsável por sua única derrota no MMA, Lyoto Machida.

O peso pesado Junior Cigano também estará em ação nesta noite, contra o veterano holandês Gilbert Yvel. O combate, na opinião de Cigano, vai se desenvolver em pé, no terreno onde o lutador mais gosta.

Nas lutas preliminares, Rafaello “Trator” Oliveira enfrentará John Gunderson.

Thiago Silva will have no rest this New Year’s Eve. Right after, on January 2, he will face former UFC champion Rashad Evans in Las Vegas. With 11 knockouts and two submissions in 15 bouts, the Jiu-Jitsu black belt promises another exciting display at UFC 108.

“To me each fight might as well be my last. I fight like it was a title match regardless of the opponent. It’s an important fight for me, because it puts me on track for the belt. All my fans expect a show. I don’t run from opponents and I’m going in to win,” he said.

Thiago knows he won’t have it easy in the octagon. Like himself, Rashad only has one loss on his record to the very same opponent, Lyoto Machida. However, the fighter is as confident as ever.

“It’s a great challenge, against one of the best in the world. It’s just what I wanted. I have faith in my style, my Jiu-Jitsu, wrestling and striking. I’m ready to take on anyone, to be champion,” he is quoted as saying on the UFC website.

Thiago and Evans headline the event. Another heavily-anticipated match has Gilbert Yvel, making his debut in the organization after victory over Pedro Rizzo, in a show down with Junior “Cigano” dos Santos, who has won his last three fights in the UFC by knockout. Beyond the main event broadcast on pay-per-view, two fights will show on Spike TV.
