Anyone to approach Gary Goodridge, 45, is promptly greeted with his two greatest trumps: his smile and his right fist, with which “Big Daddy” welcomes the interviewer. An MMA pioneer, the fighter from Trinidad and Tobago long transplanted to is retired, “irremediably retired,” but states that he will be one of the most enthusiastic spectators in the Rogers Centre for UFC 129.

I ask him which he believes will be the best fight, the one he most wants to watch. The giant glances at me, mulling it over some, leaving me hanging long enough to wonder if I’d said something dumb.

“Machida and Couture,” he finally blurts, agreeing with Tito Ortiz’s tweet from the other day. The veterans seem more anxious about this one than they are about GSP-Shields or Aldo-Hominick.

So I ponder whether “Big Daddy” doesn’t see something of his own style of fighting in that of karateka kid Lyoto Machida.

“Yeah, my style’s completely different. But I like watching his technique and striking. He hits and retreats, hits and retreats, while I’d hit and not think about anything else; I’d just keep hitting and going forward,” recalls the retiree, venturing a forecast of what game will be on display by Lyoto, who asserted that he will be looking to win the fight on his feet.

Former UFC and Pride FC fighter Goodridge was one of the greatest knockout artists of the romantic old days of MMA – he was always either knocking out or getting knocked out. It was a risky method, but it was fun. After a number of years at the top the heavy-handed big guy became a respected gate keeper – that is, the guy to beat to get a shot at the title. Gary Goodridge was the guy Rodrigo Minotauro had to go through before his crowning win over Mark Coleman at Pride in 2001, as you may well remember. Now, he’s talking about his gym here in Toronto, his new students, his work as a teacher – the things he’s currently proudest of.

Next to us, journalists and fans are hassling Royce Gracie. I point and ask if a fight against Royce in Rio wouldn’t tickle his fancy.

“It would be an incredible fight, but I really have stopped. At 45 I just want to teach and produce champions at Big Daddy Fight Team. This Royce-versus-Goodridge fight is all in fans’ heads; they can imagine what it would be like. Today Royce and I are friends; I’d rather sit down and talk to him about MMA than fight him,” he said in closing, before baring his fist for another exchange of friendly punches, this time in farewell.

Quem aborda Gary Goodridge, 45 anos, é recebido logo com seus dois maiores trunfos. Seu sorriso e seu punho direito, com o qual o “Big Daddy” cumprimenta o interlocutor. Um dos pioneiros do MMA, o lutador de Trinidad e Tobago radicado no Canadá está aposentado, “irremediavelmente aposentado”, mas afirma que será um dos espectadores dos mais empolgados no Rogers Centre, durante o UFC 129.

Pergunto qual será a melhor luta, a que ele mais quer assistir. O gigante negro me fita, pensando um pouco, me deixando em dúvida se falei alguma besteira.

“Machida e Couture”, diz enfim, em concordância com que Tito Ortiz twittou outro dia. Os veteranos parecem estar mais ansiosos por esta do que por GSP x Shields e Aldo x Hominick.

Pondero então que o karateca Lyoto Machida não tem nada que ver com o estilo de briga do velho “Papaizão”.

“É, meu estilo era totalmente outro. Mas eu gosto de ver sua técnica de trocação. Ele bate e recua, bate e recua, enquanto eu batia e não pensava em outra coisa, continuava batendo e indo à frente”, lembra o aposentado, prevendo como será o jogo de Lyoto, que reafirmou que vai procurar vencer apenas em pé.

Ex-UFC e Pride, Goodridge foi um dos maiores nocauteadores dos tempos românticos do vale-tudo – com ele era derrubar ou ser derrubado. Um método arriscado, mas divertido. Depois de uns anos no topo, o mão-pesada virou um respeitado “guardião do portão”, ou seja, o lutador que era preciso ser tirado do caminho para se conquistar a chance de disputar o título. Foi Gary Goodridge que Rodrigo Minotauro precisou finalizar antes da consagradora vitória sobre Mark Coleman, no Pride em 2001, vocês lembram. Ele agora fala sobre a academia aqui em Toronto, os novos alunos, o trabalho como professor, hoje o maior orgulho dele.

“Seria uma luta incrível, mas eu parei mesmo. Aos 45 anos só quero ensinar e formar meus campeões na Big Daddy Fight Team. Essa luta Royce x Goodridge agora só na cabeça dos fãs, que vão ficar pensando como seria. Hoje eu e Royce somos amigos, prefiro sentar com ele e ficar conversando sobre MMA do que lutar com ele”, encerra, antes de mostrar o punho, para mais uma troca de soquinhos amistosos, agora de despedida.

Better known as Pedro Rizzo and Marco Loro, the teammates from Nova União dispatched their opponents Gary Goodridge and David Derby, respectively.

Rizzo imposed the pace in the second round and got the better of seasoned veteran Goodridge, who was barred by medics from returning for the third round. Rizzo now prepares for another battle of legends, his fight with Ken Shamrock on July 10.

Now Loro was even more damaging to his opponent, with a knockout in the first minute.

O Washington Combat, evento realizado sábado à noite, foi palco das vitórias dos renomados Pedro Augusto e Marco Galvão.

Mais conhecidos como Pedro Rizzo e Marco Loro, os companheiros de treino na Nova União despacharam seus dois oponentes, respectivamente Gary Goodridge e David Derby.

Rizzo impôs seu ritmo no segundo round e avariou o experiente Goodridge, a fera de Trinidad e Tobago, que foi vetado pelos médicos de retornar para o terceiro assalto. Rizzo agora se prepara para outra batalha de lendas, a luta com Ken Shamrock no dia 10 de julho.

Já Loro foi ainda mais contundente, nocauteando o adversário com um minuto de luta, com socos.

Pedro Rizzo encara Gary Goodridge no dia 15 de maio, no Washington Combat, evento que conta com a organização do juiz do UFC Mario Yamasaki.  Entretanto, muitas outras lutas do card serão interessantes

Além de Gustavo Ximu, que encara Jordan Smith, o faixa-preta de Jiu-Jitsu Marco Loro conta com uma ajuda especial para enfrentar Albert Rios.
“Estou aqui em Nova York para ajudar na preparação do Loro para esta luta”, contou José Aldo ao GRACIEMAG.com.

Outro faixa-preta no card é Claudio Godoy, que encara Joel Wyatt, e Gabriel Miglioli, que terá John George pela frente.

“É um cara experiente, que já lutou com quase todo mundo. Nunca nos enfrentamos e estou amarradão. Treinar forte e com luta marcada é a melhor coisa”, fala Pedro, que ainda não pediu conselhos a Ruas para o desafio.

“O Marco lutou com ele há muito tempo. De lá para cá ele mudou muito. O Goodridge fez muitas lutas no K-1 e é um lutador totalmente diferente. Todo mundo já assistiu muitas lutas dele e acredito que não tenha nenhuma surpresa”, analisa.

Rizzo estará em ação num evento organizado por Mario Yamasaki, árbitro do UFC. Com a tendência de o Ultimate contratar antigos ídolos, será que uma vitória poderia levar o lutador de volta à organização em que brilhou? 

“Estou voltando a lutar nos Estados Unidos e, lógico, gostaria de lutar no Ultimate. Mas, por enquanto, não estou pensando nisso e não sei nem se essa luta acrescentaria tanto para isso. Mas, para despertar o interesse de alguém, depende de como eu me apresentar. De fato, é um recomeço para lutar contra os tops. Vamos ver.” 

As contusões vinham sendo um inimigo de Rizzo, principalmente uma forte tendinite que sentia nos cotovelos. Recuperado, contra Goodridge estará 100%. 

“Graças a Deus estou bem, sem machucado e com uma equipe boa de treino. Está tudo certinho. Já estou motivado e agora é trabalhar e se apresentar bem”, finaliza.

“He’s an experienced guy who’s fought just about everybody. We’ve never been in the ring together and I’m stoked. It’s the greatest thing to train hard and have a fight scheduled,” says Pedro, who hasn’t yet asked Ruas for advice about the challenge.

“Marco fought him a long time ago. He’s changed a lot since then. Goodridge had good fights in K-1 and is a totally different fighter now. Everyone’s seen lots of his fights and I don’t believe there will be any surprises,” he assays.

The event featuring the matchup is promoted by UFC referee Mario Yamasaki. With the Ultimate Fighting Championship calling up heroes from the days of old, could a win lead the fighter back to the organization that brought him to fame?

“I’m returning to the United States to fight and, of course, I’d like to fight in the UFC. But I’m not thinking about that now and I don’t even know if this fight will add anything to that hope. But awaking someone’s interest will depend on how I carry myself. It is a return to fighting top opponents, though. We’ll see.”

Rizzo has been plagued with injury, mainly are severe tendonitis afflicting his elbows. Now recovered, against Goodridge he will be 100%.

Riding a 14-fight winning streak, Gegard Mousasi has beaten such top-flight opponents as Melvin Manhoef, Ronaldo Jacaré, Renato Babalu and Rameau Sokoudjou, among others. Owner of the Strikeforce light heavyweight and Dream middleweight GP belts, the Armenian just keeps earning more and more respect in the world of MMA. At only 24 years of age, he has amassed 27 victories, just two losses and one draw.

And there is no end to the number of challenges being thrown the fighter’s way. As confirmed by the organizers of Dynamite!!, to take place on the 31^st of this month, Mousasi will enter the ring to face Gary Goodridge in a K-1 rules bout. Beyond his New Year’s fight, he has a plateful of challenges coming up in 2010.

According to his manager, Apy Echteld, in an interview with MMAJunkie, Mousasi should fight in both Strikeforce and Dream during the first semester of the year. The former, probably to take place in April, the card will probably feature Fedor Emelianenko, while the event in Japan to take place May 30 will feature the organization’s light heavyweight GP. The fighter also had a boxing match scheduled for January, but plans changed upon confirmation of the Goodridge fight.
