Jiu-Jitsu black belt Ricardo “Demente” Abreu had his bout at the Fight Club event held yesterday in California canceled.

His opponent, Wes Swofford of Team Quest, pulled out from the bout moments before official weigh-ins.

“The opponent didn’t show up at weigh-ins, which made things difficult,” explained the Acquaflora/Ribercred representative’s agent, adding, “He simply gave up; he wasn’t injured or anything. The president of the event said that he’d approached seven other fighters first, but none of them agreed to face me. Wes was the eighth, and he agreed to go, even signed a contract. Now he’ll be paying a fine for not showing.”

Despite having shed 31 pounds to make the 185-pound weight limit, Ricardo offered to fight one division up. The promotion offered an opponent available two weight classes up, at heavyweight, but they failed to reach an agreement.

Demente’s fight was to be the third at Fight Club, an MMA event held in Fountain Valley, Calif. It would have been the fourth career fight for Ricardo Abreu, who boasts three first-round wins.

O faixa-preta de Jiu-Jitsu Ricardo Abreu “Demente” teve sua luta cancelada, no Fight Club, na Califórnia, que rolou ontem.

Seu oponente, Wes Swofford (Team Quest), desistiu de enfrentar o brasileiro momentos antes da pesagem oficial.

“O adversário não compareceu à pesagem, o que fez com que a situação ficasse delicada. Ele simplesmente desistiu, não havia lesão nem nada. O diretor do evento justificou que outros sete adversários foram procurados antes, mas nenhum deles havia aceitado enfrentar Demente. Wes era o oitavo e havia concordado, inclusive assinado o contrato. Ele agora vai pagar a multa por não lutar”, informou José Carlos Calixto, agente do atleta da equipe Acquaflora/Ribercred.

Apesar de ter perdido 14kg para bater 84kg, Ricardo se ofereceu para lutar uma categoria acima. A organização ofereceu um atleta disponível duas categorias acima, no peso pesado, e não houve acordo.

A luta de Demente seria a terceira do Fight Club, que rolou na cidade de Fountain Valley.  Seria a quarta disputa de Ricardo Abreu, que tem três vitórias no primeiro assalto.

Yet another Brazilian black belt has been showing the transition from Jiu-Jitsu to MMA can be a victorious one.

World runner-up in 2009 and 2010, Ricardo “Demente” Abreu traveled to California, for Fight Club: Rising Stars 2, coming up Friday, Dec. 7, to take on Team Quest’s Wes Swofford in the third fight of the evening.

Demente, who trains under UFC Hall of Famer Tito Ortiz and former Chute Boxe coach Rafael Cordeiro, remains unbeaten in his three-fight MMA career, winning all of them in the first round.

Ricardo commented on his return and revealed some family news that provided him some extra motivation:

“I’m dying to fight. I had a good recovery from the injury that kept me out of BRFC 3 last August, and I’m ready to get back to winning. I want to take another victory home with me to Brazil, to my city to dedicate to my son, who’s about to be born,” said the competitor.

The event Fight Club: Rising Stars 2, featuring “Big John” McCarthy as referee, will go down this Friday in Fountain Valley, Calif.

Mais um faixa-preta brasileiro tem mostrado como pode ser vitoriosa a transição do Jiu-Jitsu para o MMA.

Vice-campeão mundial em 2009  e 2010, Ricardo Abreu, o Demente, viajou para a Califórnia, nos Estados Unidos, para participar nesta sexta-feira, dia 7, do evento Fight Club: Rising Stars 2, no qual enfrenta Wes Swofford (Team Quest) na terceira luta da noite.

Demente, que é treinado pelo integrante do hall da fama do UFC, Tito Ortiz, e pelo ex-Chute Boxe Rafael Cordeiro, segue invicto com uma sequência de três vitórias no MMA, sendo todas no primeiro round.

Ricardo comentou seu retorno, e revelou uma novidade familiar que lhe trouxe motivação especial.

“Estou com fome de luta. Recuperei-me bem de uma lesão que me tirou do BRFC 3 em agosto e estou pronto para voltar a vencer. Quero levar mais uma vitória para o Brasil, minha cidade e dedicar ao meu filho que vai nascer em breve”, disse o competidor.

O evento Fight Club – Rising Stars 2, , que conta com “Big” John McCarthy como árbitro das lutas, será nesta sexta-feira em Fountain Valley, Califórnia.
