The man on the cover of GRACIEMAG #227 is here to teach an attack that always catch the opponent by surprise.

In this video shot in 2010, Rafael Mendes shows how to set up the flying triangle.

He explains in Portuguese: “As the match begins, make a grip on the opponent’s lapel and another one on his elbow. On the same side of the grip to the elbow, put your foot on the opponent’s hip and fake a jump to pull guard. As the opponent’s bends his knees to prepare for the jump, pass your other leg over his shoulder and lock the triangle. Then, push the arm to the other side and pull the head down for the tap.”

When betting on the triangle, Romulo Barral’s brown belt finished several opponents with the technique, as we can see in the video below. Watch, study and good training!

Nova Uniao’s Christian Broadnax began his endeavor to Brazil three months ago with hopes of learning, competing and developing as an athlete and a person. The brown belt under GMA member Gustavo Dantas left his home in Arizona to rid himself of his comfort zone and put his trust in Rodrigo Feijao to help him mature.

Results have shown as Christian topped the podium of the 2013 IBJJF South Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Championship, the 7th Maringa Open and most recently the 2013 IBJJF Floripa Open where he also placed third in the open class. He also competed in the 1st Copa Elite de Jiu-Jitsu where he finished first in the brown belt absolute earning 800,00 reais equivalent to about $350.

Before he returns home soon, he will compete in the Brazilian Nationals by Teams competition for Nova Uniao.

Roberto Satoshi was one of the top standouts at the European Jiu-Jitsu Championship this weekend in Lisbon, Portugal.

Now he didn’t just come out of the blue and appear on GRACIEMAG.com’s pages. Last year Satoshi won the European Championship and the Pan, as well, but as a brown belt.

In his first outing against the black belts at the Europeans, the Bon Sai representative overcame the likes of Michael Langhi and Jonathan Torres. In the following video, sent in by the folks at BJJFights.com, Satoshi performs a picture perfect armbar at the 2012 European Championship.

UFC 129 didn’t just feature a star-studded card. The fighters went out there to raise the roof, and to make things even more interesting, the “best of” bonus was the biggest ever: 129 thousand dollars.

José Aldo and Mark Hominick were two to receive the sum, for fight of the night; Lyoto Machida got it for his knockout of Randy Couture; and Pablo Garza saved his skin with a flying triangle on Yves Jabouin and added the extra padding to his bank account.

Garza is known to use Jiu-Jitsu in his fights. Of his 11 wins (just one loss), Garza has coaxed the tapout in seven of them. He has even beaten the likes of three-time Jiu-Jitsu world champion Fredson Paixão in MMA.

The Gracie Barra teacher, who achieved bronzes in the absolute in 2007 and 2008, started off Sunday becoming three-time heavyweight world champion, by submitting Marcel Louzado, of CheckMat, with a flying triangle.

In the big match of the evening, Tussa shone again, beating Antonio Braga Neto (Gordo-Evolve) in the absolute final, keeping Neto from his third open category title.

In the women’s division, recently-promoted brown belt Hillary Williams (Westside) surprised by taking her weight and the absolute.

In the team dispute, CheckMat BJJ won, with Gracie Barra in second and Lloyd Irvin in third.

In the black belt men’s, it is unlikely a No-Gi Worlds will ever see a list of so many stars at the top of the podium again: Pablo Teixeira (rooster), Caio Terra (light feather), Baret Yoshida (feather), Lucas Lepri (light), Lucas Leite (medium), Rominho Barral (medium heavy), Tussa (heavy), Braga Neto (super-heavy) and Josh Barnett (ultra heavy) went home with gold medals.

Now in the Master division, the teams of our GMAs shone: Jorge Britto (absolute), Carlos Francis (heavy), Maycon Carvalho (medium heavy), Hermes França (medium) and Joel Tudor (light) were champions once again.
