Lucas Pinheiro recently set out to achieve a bold goal: to win two tournaments in a week. Last weekend the roosterweight moved up in weight and won two gold medals at the American Nationals, in Vegas — fighting among light featherweights, Lucas prevailed in and out of the gi.

“I fought as a light featherweight and felt good,” he said. “I won the no-gi title after finishing two opponents, and the next day I won the gi category by ending the final in under a minute. I felt much stronger due to this diet I’m doing to gain weight, and I didn’t lose my speed, which is my trademark.”

The second half of his goal is to take down the Five Grappling lightweight GP, which is set to take place this Saturday. Again Lucas will be fighting above his usual weight class, in a tourney featuring seven others, including world champion Samuel Braga and Gianni Grippo.

“This win increased my confidence going into Five Grappling,” he said. “I’m focused, injury-free and ready for the tournament. My training has been intense (I trained with heavier athletes), and I hope to put on a good show.”

Beatriz Mesquita, 25, shone last weekend in San Diego, California. In a Five Grappling event, the Gracie Humaitá fighter won her six-minute superfight with Talita Alencar of Alliance.

Mesquita locked a tight leg lock in place, which her opponent escaped. The submission attempt and her pressure throughout were enough to grant her the decision win.

“It was a good fight,” she said. “It was just six minutes, and only submissions were decisive. The leg lock was in place; I think I got too excited for the submission, and she got away. I’ve watched the fight a few times to fix the errors for the Pan.”

Mesquita also spoke of the growing number of women’s superfights. “I’m proud and very happy to see how the sport has been growing, especially for women. The girls are getting the sense that it’s possible to live off of the sport, and that’s very cool. The incentive has been growing, as are the invites to fight BJJ.”

Lucas Barbosa dominated three opponents to win the light heavyweight Five Grappling belt last Sunday in San Diego, Calif. The 25-year-old Atos fighter used takedowns and pressure to beat Marcel Louzado, Tarsis Humphreys and Nick Schrock in six-minute matches with no points counted.

Afterwards the “Hulk” talked to Graciemag. Here’s how it went.

“I began training judo first and then I got started in BJJ,” he said. “I’ve taken part in a few competitions, trained with some athletes from Brazil’s national team, and I always kept training that part. I believe a foundation in judo is an essential tool in BJJ. So I have judo as an admirable art, but I’m infatuated with BJJ. I’ve been doing very good preparation with my team, Atos, and with each passing day I feel my BJJ evolve. This makes me believe even more in my potential. I’m a guy who, in defeat or victory, will seek evolution.”

In the final, Lucas faced Nick Schrock, a student under Xande Ribeiro and longtime rival. “I had fought Nick several times and I was always able to impose my game and win,” Barbosa said. “I knew his game, so I was more prepared. But I also knew I couldn’t relax, because he is a guy who fights practically like I do. I think I could have adjusted my finishing positions a little better. I locked two foot locks on him. The first was pretty tight, and he felt it but managed to escape. In the second, when I locked the same move in place close to the end, I didn’t have time to go through with it. Even knowing I had the fight under control, I sought the finish.”

A brilliant performance, for sure — and there’s more coming up soon. “My focus remains on the IBJJF Pan,” says Barbosa. “There are many more challenges in my weight class and in the absolute, but I will do everything I can to maintain the performance I had at Five Grappling.”

Lucas Barbosa, o “Hulk”, usou seus poderes para dominar três oponentes e conquistar o cinturão meio-pesado do Five Grappling, no último domingo, 11 de março, em San Diego. Aos 25 anos, o craque faixa-preta da Atos pôs em prática as quedas e pressão para vencer Marcel Louzado, Tarsis Humphreys, e Nick Schrock num duelo de seis minutos, sem pontos, onde o vencedor era quem atacasse mais ou finalizasse.

Hulk comentou a participação no Grand Prix, analisou a vitória sobre o campeão mundial de Jiu-Jitsu Tarsis Humphfreys  e destrinchou seu jogo de derrubadas, que foi um dos seus movimentos mais usados durante a competição.

“Comecei a treinar judô e logo depois comecei no Jiu-Jitsu. Já participei de algumas competições no judô, treinei com alguns atletas da seleção brasileira e sempre continuei treinando essa parte. Acredito que uma base de judô é uma ferramenta essencial no Jiu-Jitsu. É uma arte admirável, mas sou apaixonado pelo Jiu-Jitsu. Venho fazendo uma preparação muito boa com minha equipe Atos e a cada dia que passa sinto meu Jiu-Jitsu evoluindo. Isso me faz acreditar ainda mais no meu potencial. Como eu disse, sou um cara que na derrota ou na vitória, vou buscar a evolução”, comenta Lucas.

Na disputa final, válida pelo cinturão, Lucas encarou Nick Schrock, aluno de Xande Ribeiro e um adversário já conhecido nas competições.

“Já havia lutado várias vezes contra o Nick e sempre consegui impor meu jogo e vencer. Eu já sabia o jogo dele, então, estava mais preparado. Mas também sabia que não poderia dar mole, porque ele é um cara que luta praticamente que nem eu. Acho que faltou ajustar mais um pouco as posições de finalização. Eu encaixei duas chaves de pé nele. A primeira estava bem justa e ele sentiu, mas conseguiu escapar. Já na segunda, quando eu encaixei a mesma finalização no finalzinho da luta, não tive tempo de finalizar. Mesmo sabendo que estava com a luta dominada, eu busquei a finalização”, diz Lucas, antes de falar dos objetivos do próximo fim de semana.

“O foco continua o mesmo para o Pan da IBJJF. Tem muito mais desafios na categoria e no absoluto, mas vou fazer de tudo para manter o desempenho que tive no Five Grappling”, encerra Lucas.

O cinturão de pesos meio-pesados do Five Grappling conheceu o seu dono nesse sábado. Lucas “Hulk” Barbosa, da Atos JJ, conquistou o título no dia 11 de março, no Lincoln High School, em San Diego, Califórnia. O evento lotou a arena montada e teve um dia cheio de disputas, repletas de ação com uma grande variedade de talentos, de jovens faixas-azuis aos experientes faixas-pretas.

O destaque do evento, como esperado, foi o GP de oito atletas que valia o cinturão. Hulk, Leandro Lo, Nick Schrock, Tanner Rice, Tarsis Humphreys, Eliot Kelly, Erza Lenon e Marcel Louzado disputaram o título e presentearam a multidão com momentos intensos ao longo da disputa. Veja abaixo como o evento se desenrolou.

Quartas de final

De um lado do tatame, Nick Schrock abriu a disputa a toda velocidade contra Erza Lenon. Com Saulo Ribeiro em seu corner, Schrock, também conhecido como “O Alce”, rapidamente encontrou seu caminho para as costas do seu adversário e tomou o controle das lapelas para obter um estrangulamento.

Ainda nas quartas de final, se enfrentaram Tanner Rice e Eliot Kelly. O duelo não terminou em finalização, mas Tanner conseguiu convencer os três árbitros que ele merecia estar nas semifinais, após aplica bons ataques de baixo como uma omoplata que deu a Eliot certa dificuldade para escapar.

Em disputa entre brasucas,  Tarsis Humphreys manteve a pressão sobre Leandro Lo durante os seis minutos do duelo. Após quase passar a guarda na metade do embate, a fera da Alliance provavelmente fez o suficiente para convencer os três árbitros. Eles deram a Tarsis o passe para as semifinais e a vitória sobre o duro Lo.

O último confronto das quartas de final contou com Lucas Hulk e Marcel Louzado, que foi escolhido de última hora. Apesar do curto prazo, Marcel provou estar pronto para a ação. Ambos os atletas optaram por não tomar muitos riscos e permaneceram em pé, procurando uma chance de levar o adversário para baixo. O árbitro viu de forma diferente e acabou penalizando Louzado duas vezes por falta de combatividade, o que levou a sua desqualificação e garantiu a passagem de Hulk para as semifinais.

Semifinais

Nick Schrock sabia como a guarda de Tanner Rice poderia ser perigosa, então usou toda sua pressão e velocidade para não dar a Rice qualquer espaço para atacar. Schrock fez mais do que isso e também trabalhou duro para passar, o que no final concedeu-lhe uma vitória por decisão dos árbitros e uma vaga na final.

A pressão também foi a principal ferramenta de Lucas Hulk para tirar o espaço de Tarsis Humphreys, e assim pegar a vaga da semifinal. Hulk ameaçou a guarda de Humphreys durante toda a luta, e forçou Tarsis a virar para quatro apoios várias vezes. No final, os árbitros decidiram que Hulk estava na final.

Terceiro Lugar

Mais uma vez, Tanner Rice fez o melhor de seu conhecido jogo de guarda para pegar Tarsis Humphreys em uma chave de pé que garantiu-lhe o terceiro lugar.

Final

Como esperado, foi uma guerra total. Hulk e Schrock não tinham nenhuma intenção de dar ao adversário nem um centímetro de vantagem durante o duelo. Poderosas quedas foram utilizadas por ambos os atletas logo no inicio. Uma vez no chão, Hulk foi mais bem sucedido em se manter no topo e ameaçar a guarda de Schrock. Ele passou uma vez, quase tomou as costas e atacou na chave de pé, o que fez Nick girar para escapar daquela situação difícil. No final, os árbitros concordaram que Lucas tinha feito mais durante o jogo e unanimemente o declararam vencedor e campeão dos meio-pesados.

Lucas falou sobre sua realização: “Estou extremamente feliz. Eu tive três lutas difíceis e fui capaz de sair vencedor no final de tudo. Na final, eu sabia que tinha que levá-lo para baixo e controlar no chão. Ele é um grande adversário e estou feliz por ter conseguido fazer o meu jogo funcionar .”

Super lutas

Gabi McComb e Catherine Perret lutaram por seis minutos. Gabi saiu como vencedora por decisão dos árbitros.

Piter Frank venceu Michael Liera Jr também por decisão dos árbitros em outra lutamuito equilibrada.

Tammi Musumeci não deixou nada para os árbitros decidirem. Ela berimbolou até chegar às costas de Janet Bishop e finaliza numa chave de cervical.

Francisco Iturralde abriu caminho para a guarda de Magid Hage e quase montou, evitando o perigo do estrangulamento beisebol que fez Magid famoso. Iturralde garantiu a vitória por decisão dos árbitros.

Bia Mesquita quase conseguiu finalizar Talita Alencar no leg lock. Talita lutou bravamente como sempre faz e escapou da posição difícil, mas não pode evitar a derrota via decisão dos árbitros.

The Five Grappling light heavyweight belt finally has a owner. Atos JJ’s Lucas Barbosa powered through a star-studded bracket to claim the title this Saturday, March 11, at the Lincoln High School, in San Diego, California. The sold out event delivered a full day of action-packed matches featuring a wide array of talents, from young blue belts to experienced black bels.

The highlight of the program, as expected, was the 8-men light heavyweight GP. Lucas Barbosa, Nick Schrock, Tanner Rice, Tarsis Humphreys, Leandro Lo, Eliot Kelly, Erza Lenon and Marcel Louzado gifted the crowd with intense moments throughout the program. Here’s how the bracket played out.

Quarterfinals

On one side of the bracket, Nick Schrock opened the program at full speed against Erza Lenon. With Saulo Ribeiro on his corner, Schrock, aka The Moose, quickly found his way to his opponent’s back and took control of the lapels to get a choke in place.

Then, it was time for the other “all-American” quarterfinal match, between Tanner Rice and Eliot Kelly. The Norcal duel did not end in submission, but Tanner managed to convince the three referees that he deserved to be in the semifinals with good attacks from the bottom like an omoplata that got Eliot in trouble to escape.

The “Brazilian” side of the bracket kicked off with the biggest upset of the evening. Tarsis Humphreys kept the pressure on Leandro Lo for the entire six minutes of their match. A near guard pass midway through was probably enough for the three referees to consider Tarsis more effective and grant him the pass to the semifinals.

The last quarterfinal featured Lucas Barbosa and last minute stand in Marcel Louzado. Despite the short notice, Marcel proved to be ready for action. Both athletes chose not to take too many risks and remained on their feet, looking for a chance to take the opponent down. The referee saw it differently and ended up penalizing Louzado twice for lack of combativeness, which led to his disqualification and Barbosa securing a spot in the semifinals.

Semifinals

Nick Schrock knew how dangerous Tanner Rice’s guard could be, so he used all his pressure and also his speed to give Rice no space to attack. Schrock did more than that and also worked hard to pass, which in the end granted him a referee decision win and the spot in the final.

Pressure was also Lucas Barbosa’s main tool to give Tarsis Humphreys no room to move during the second semifinal. Barbosa threatened Humphreys’ guard throughout the match, forcing Tarsis to turn to the turtle position several times. In the end, the referees decided in favor of Barbosa.

Third Place Match

Once again, Tanner Rice made the best out of his well known guard game to catch Tarsis Humphreys in a foot lock that secured him the third place.

Final

As expected, its was an all out war. Both Barbosa and Schrock had no intentions of giving the opponent even one inch of advantage during the match. Powerful takedowns were the greeting cards presented by both athletes. Once on the ground, Barbosa was more successful on staying on top and threatening Schrock’s guard. He passed once, almost took the back and attacked at least one toe hold that caused Nick to spin his way out of the tough spot. In the end, the referees all agreed Lucas had done more during the match and unanimously declared him the winner and light heavyweight champion.

Lucas talked about his accomplishment: “I am extremely happy. I had three tough matches and I was able to come out on top at the end of it all. In the final match, I knew I had to take him down and control on the ground. He is a great opponent and I am glad I was able to make my game work.”

Super matches

Also in the main card, five super matches completed the program with more thrills.

First, Gabi McComb and Catherine Perret battled it out for six minutes. Gabi came out as the winner via referee decision.

Then, Piter Frank beat Michael Liera Jr also via referee decision in another very close match.

Tammi Musumeci left nothing for the referees to decide. She “berimboled” her way to Janet Bishop’s back and finished with a neck crank.

Francisco Iturralde fought his way into Magid Hage’s guard and almost landed in full mount while avoiding the dangerous baseball choke that made Magid famous. Iturralde secured the victory via referee decision.

The final super match of the evening put Bia Mesquita against Talita Alencar. One of the most accomplished Jiu-Jitsu athletes of all times, Bia went for the kill and almost got it with a beautiful leg lock attack. Talita fought bravely as she always does and escaped the tight spot, but could not avoid the defeat via referee decision.

The Five Grappling Super League will return December 3 with an eight-man welterweight tourney. The Welterweight Pro Invitational, set to take place at Lincoln High School in San Diego, CA, will feature Dillon Danis, Edwin Najmi, Bill Cooper, Michael Liera Jr., Sean Roberts, John Combs, Marcelo Mafra and Brian Morizi. They will fight six-minute matches in the gi with no score count — submission only. In the case of no submission occurring in a match, three judges will determine the winner.

Alongside the tourney, the Super League will also host 20 superfights split between gi and no-gi.

Realizada em Solana Beach, na Califórnia, a primeira edição do torneio Five Grappling Super League teve os faixas-pretas Tim Spriggs e Mackenzie Dern como os grandes donos da festa.

Cada um ganhou seu torneio de oito atletas, e levou para casa a bolada de 10 mil verdinhas.

O torneio masculino foi sem kimono. Spriggs esbanjou no wrestling e no seu poderoso jogo por cima no Jiu-Jitsu para vencer Bruno Bastos (decisão do árbitro), Lucas Rocha (5 a 0) e, na final, a fera Yuri Simões, por 2 a 0. (2-0). O aluno de Lloyd Irvin ficou ainda com um belo cinturão, e aproveitou a deixa:

“Pessoal do ADCC, estou pronto para enfrentar os melhores do mundo sem kimono, como mostrei aqui. Mandem email, telefonem, mandem mensagens, que eu vou. Nos vemos em São Paulo!”, convidou-se o faixa-preta.

Mackenzie Dern finalizou suas três lutas no evento californiano.

Mackenzie Dern também venceu três pedreiras – e finalizou todas. A professora da Gracie Humaitá finalizou Tammi Musumeci nas costas, pegou a perna de Fabiana Borges e, na final, finalizou a surpreendente Karen Antunes com uma chave de pé fulminante, logo nos primeiros segundos de luta.

O mais pesado Garry Tonon venceu João Miyao na prorrogação, em duelo de tirar o fôlego.

Nas superlutas, também sem pano, Keenan Cornelius derrubou Otavio Sousa duas vezes para vencer por 4 a 0.

Já o americano Garry Tonon comprovou o talento sem pano ao superar João Miyao, por apenas 1 penalidade, após um 0 a 0 que perdurou por 16 minutos de batalha.

Tim Spriggs, Mackenzie Dern are the champions of the Five Grappling Super League

The first edition of the Five Grappling Super League took place this Sunday, in Solana Beach, CA.

Tim Spriggs and Mackenzie Dern were the big champions in the two invitational tournaments.

Spriggs used his wrestling and powerful top game to beat Bruno Bastos (ref decision), Lucas Rocha (5-0) and Yuri Simões (2-0) for the belt and the $10K prize.

Mackenzie Dern had an impressive showing and finished all her three matches for the belt and the other $10K prize..

She caught Tammi Musumeci with a choke from the back, Fabiana Borges with a leg lock and Karen Antunes with a foot lock.

In the two super-matches, Keenan Cornelius outscored Otávio Sousa 4-0 with two takedowns and Garry Tonon beat João Miyao by one penalty after a 0-0 tie in 16 minutes.

Garry Tonon and João Miyao have business to settle next August 2.

The two black belts will meet in one of the two super-matches at Five Grappling, in Solana Beach, CA.

They fought before in the GI in 2013 and Miyao won by ref decision.

This time, it’s no-gi submission only for 10 minutes (and extra 6 minutes with points).

Keenan Cornelius and Otavio Sousa will be in one of the two super-matches of the Five Grappling event next August 2.

The two never competed against each other before, but have trained together for a brief period in 2010, when Keenan spent some time training at Gracie Barra, in California.
