Last Saturday wasn’t only day 3 of the Pan. UFC London took place the same day in London.

As well as local fighter Jimi Manuwa’s incredible knockout over Corey Anderson in the main event, something else stood out: Gunnar Nelson’s use of BJJ vs. Alan Jouban.

A karateka with vast ground knowledge — having even had good showings in the ADCC, — Gunnar Nelson again paraded his finishing skills in the Octagon.

After throwing a clean blow on Jouban, which shook him, Nelson charged and used a tight guillotine to finish. Note how Gunnar’s arm passes almost completely by Jouban’s neck, making the required adjustment the absolute minimum when it was time to tighten the neck.

A próxima temporada de eventos do UFC começa a tomar forma. Após vencer Tim Kennedy nos pesos médios e pedir para encarar Vitor Belfort, parece que Kelvin Gastelum teve seu pedido atendido.

Para encabeçar o UFC Fight Night Fortaleza em março, evento anunciado primeiro por GRACIEMAG, Gastelum deve encarar o “Fenômeno” Vitor Belfort, em duelo de cinco assaltos, na luta principal do evento. O duelo foi adiantado pelo Combate.com.

Vindo de três derrotas em suas últimas quatro ultas, Belfort mira uma reinvenção para este próximo duelo. Após dizer que não estava mais se sentindo como o lutador que já fora outrora, o faixa-preta de Carlson Gracie prometeu voltar às suas origens, mais agressivo e decisivo. Da última vez que lutou no Brasil, Vitor venceu Dan Henderson por nocaute, em novembro de 2015.

Gastelum, campeão do TUF 17 no peso médio, alternou suas aparições como peso meio-médio, sem ter batido o peso em três ocasiões. Apesar de ter externado a vontade de se manter na divisão até 77kg, parece que a organização pretende mantê-lo no cage até 84kg, pelo menos por enquanto.

Outra luta de peso confirmada esta semana é o duelo entre o ex-campeão Junior Cigano contra Stefan Struve, no UFC Halifax, em 19 de fevereiro.

Former UFC light-heavyweight champion Maurício “Shogun” Rua  had a nightmare of a night last Saturday.

The 34s TKO loss to Ovince St-Preux in Uberlândia, Brazil, was everything he didn’t want to happen.

Regarding that, Shogun released a statement on his Facebook page with his take on the outcome of the fight.

Humble and centered, the Brazilian wrote about what hurt him the most and also signaled that there’s light ahead for his career.

“I want to have my thanks registered here for all the support on my fight Saturday Night. I want to also thank you guys for all the showings of care and support after the fight.
Losing is always very bad, hurts a lot, but what’s hurting more is to lose without being able to show what I trained, and what I know. Fighting is fighting, and I know very well that in this weight class any punch that connects early on can cost a huge price. For many times in my career I was in the happy side and unfortunately this time I faced the sad side of this story. I know a lot of people will unload harsh words, some will make constructive criticism and others will take the chance to throw all sorts of jokes and offensive words as possible. Unfortunately this is all part of being in the spotlights, and it’s something that we as professional athletes, and mostly in Brazil, have to be always used to deal with.
As much as some will doubt it, I prepared myself a lot for this fight and was well trained, and this is what hurts the most about losing this way, without being able to show what I trained. Those who followed it, trained with me, or saw some of my training knows this. When you lose fighting some rounds, or even some minutes, in some ways it’s less of a suffering cause you were able to show what you got and what you prepared, and it wasn’t enough. But losing this way it’s certainly very frustrating.
I made a techincal mistake, maybe due to anxiety and a big will to get this win in Brazil in such an important moment of my career, and I paid the price. Props to St. Preux, It’s part of the game and he deserved the win.
Now I will rest, enjoy my family and then think about my next steps, TUF Brazil, maybe a weight class change, but I’ll keep on going cause winning is easy, but keep on battling and overcome the obstacles is what makes a true fighter. Thank you all for the support.” Mauricio “Shogun” Rua

It lasted less than a minute.

After a long night of 10 fights with six judges decisions, Mauricio Shogun and Ovince St-Preux stepped on the octagon a little before 4:00AM in Brazil.

As if he knew the crowd was tired, St-Preux sent the audience on its way after only 34s of round 1.

A precise left hit Shogun on the side of the head and sent the Brazilian to the canvas.

St-Preux finished the job quick and earned his 17th win in MMA.

“I will still be a fan of Shogun but to be a legend, you need to beat the legends,” said St-Preux.

About the setback, Shogun said: “I was really well-trained, and I always feel obligated to do my best. Fights in this division are like this, and he got the win.”

Everybody in the Saitama Super Arena, in Tokyo, Japan, and around the globe, knew what they were in for.

In a match up between Mark Hunt and Roy “Big Country” Nelson, a one-punch KO was the most likely outcome.

After a first round of nearly misses, Mark Hunt took advantage of Nelson’s lean forward when punching to land a uppercut right on the chin that landed Big Nelson on the ground.

The referee had nothing else to do but to get in the way and give the win to the Super Samoan.

Hunt’s right hand had just delivered Big Country’s first ever KO defeat in his MMA career.

In the co-main event, Myles Jury showed clearly that he is on his way up while Takanori Gomi is in his way down.

Yoshihiro Akiyama also had a convincing performance against Amir Sadollah for a 30-27 unanimous decision win.

In the first ever female bout in UFC history in Japan, Miesha Tate had almost no trouble to overcome local star Rin Nakai.

Mark Hunt vs. Roy Nelson is the main event in a card that includes Takanori Gomi, Miesha Tate, Yoshihiro Akiyama and many others.

Nakai is scheduled to fight Miesha Tate at UFC Fight Night Japan, this Sept. 20, in Tokyo.

The main event of the night is Roy Nelson vs. Mark Hunt.

The night was almost perfect for the Brazilian fans in the Nilson Nelson Gymnnasium, in Brazil’s capital, Brasília.

With the exception of Igor Araujo, all Brazilian fighters in the card came out of the octagon with wins.

Within the main card, Jessica Andrade was impressive against Larissa Pacheco, Iuri Alcantara had a tough match against Russell Doane and Santiago Ponzinibbio Tkoed Wendell Oliveira.

Later on, Leo Santos used his world class Jiu-Jitsu to annul Efrain Escudeiro’s strinking and win by unanimous decision.

In the co-main event, Gleison Tibau, the Brazilian with most appearances in the UFC, defeated Piotr Hallman in a close match by split decision.

When the main event moment came, homeboy Big Foot Silva was regarded as the favorite by most of the specialists but underdog Andrei Arlovski was determined to prove them wrong.

And so he did.

The Pitbull, a guy who has been fighting non-stop for 15 years, showed everybody that he is still in the mix at the UFC heavyweight division.

“I wanted to retire, but my new coach told me that I still have much to give. Now I feel that i have the right people around me and I want to continue to pursue my dream,” said Arlovski in one of the countdown videos.

In the octagon, he seemed more sure of himself and despite some good kicks from Silva was never in any real trouble.

Right around midway into the first round, Arlovski connected a huge right hand that sent Silva to the ground.

A few more hammer fists did the job and his 22 victory in MMA was in the books.
