From May 24th to 26th, 2024, the Mandela Forum in Florence will become pulsating heart of Italian Jiu-Jitsu, hosting the highly anticipated 2024 edition of the Italian BJJ Open and the Jiu Jitsu Expo. These events, capturing the essence of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, offer an unrivaled opportunity for athletes, enthusiasts, and brands connected to the sport.

Italian BJJ Open: a stage for excellence

This year’s Italian BJJ Open, managed by the UIJJ – Unione Italian Jiu-Jitsu, promises to be the climactic event of the sport season, marking the culmination of the UIJJ rankings and the awarding of prizes to the most deserving athletes. With over 2000 participants expected, including a growing number of international competitors, the event is confirmed to be one of the top three largest and best-organized tournaments in Europe.

Ten competition areas will be set up to host three days of intense challenges, including a division for children. This year, there’s a 30% increase in registrations, surpassing 400 young athletes. In 2023, the total number of black belts reached 100, a significant figure considering that just a few years ago, the numbers were much lower. Since 2023, this year also featured several matches in the adult women’s black belt category, highlighting the event’s importance and growth.

Jiu-Jitsu Expo: a meeting point for the BJJ community
Born in 2022 alongside the 10th edition of the Italian BJJ Open, the Jiu-Jitsu Expo has quickly established itself as a unique event in Italy. It’s where the BJJ community comes together to network and build relationships, promoting Italian Jiu-Jitsu culture and offering unprecedented commercial opportunities even for international brands.

The organization is under UIJJ, the entity that is behind also OCEAN, the new exciting NOGI pro championship running with Trials all over Italy , with Semi and Finals in Sardinia during the BJJ Summer Week.

The shops in the Expo will showcase services and products related to BJJ and martial arts. Many old and new brands will attend the event, among many: BJJ Summer Week (the biggest BJJ Camp in the world), Half Sumo, Adidas Combat Sports, Keiko, Kingz, Tatami Fightwear, Progress and many more.

The 2023 edition was explosive, with many new stands added compared to the previous year, and free seminars led by prominent figures such as Michelle Nicolini and Italian Olympic judo champion Fabio Basile.

The third edition will take place on 24, 25 and 26 May 2024, at the Mandela Forum in Florence.

We will see Professors such as Alessandro Borgonovo, Matteo Patrone, Melissa Benedini, Alberto Tesi, Fabrizio Screpante, Ilia Pachkowsky, Riccardo Mezzetti, Matteo Menna alternating on the mats set up for the seminars, and brands such as Revive Fightwear, Bud Power, Half Sumo just to name a few.

An opportunity not to be missed
The UIJJ ranking, valid only for registered athletes in Italy, offers cash prizes that this year have increased from €3000 in previous editions to €5000. This ranking also represents financial support for the annual competition-related expenses, and including prizes for other belt levels as a free registrations for the entire annual UIJJ calendar.

Registrations for Italian BJJ Open close on May 17th at midnight, and details for participation can be found on the uijj.org website under the competitions section.

Os faixas-pretas Renzo Gracie, organizador do evento, e Letícia Ribeiro são mais uma adição à lista de grandes professores do evento, a ser realizado nos dias 18 e 19 de outubro, no Centro de Convenções de Long Beach, na Califórnia.

Nos dias 9 e 10 de novembro, Long Beach, na Califórnia, vai receber a segunda edição da World Jiu-Jitsu Expo, o superevento lançado por Renzo Gracie no ano passado.

E as primeiras grandes atrações já começam a ser divulgadas. Os organizadores confirmaram nesta terça-feira a GRACIEMAG a primeira superluta de Jiu-Jitsu da Expo – uma luta sem kimono entre um astro brasileiro e um ídolo californiano.

O faixa-preta brasileiro é o pentacampeão mundial Bruno Malfacine, peso galo da Alliance. O lutador local e seu oponente é o duríssimo e criativo Jeff Glover, da academia Paragon.

Malfacine comentou o desafio sem pano, que será nas regras do Mundial Sem Kimono da IBJJF:

“É uma honra fazer parte deste evento, eu tive o privilégio de visitar a Expo ano passado e assisti às superlutas com a maior vontade de estar lá dentro fazendo parte do show. Estou feliz pelo convite e vou treinar bastante para fazer uma apresentação à altura do evento”, disse o atual vice-campeão mundial dos galos, antes de elogiar Jeff Glover.

“Já estou ansioso para a luta, sempre assisti ao Jeff Glover em ação e ele é um verdadeiro showman, além de ótima pessoa. Vi algumas lutas dele no ADCC e até mesmo sua atuação na Expo de 2012. Tenho certeza de que vamos fazer uma luta eletrizante”, garante Malfacine.

Além de lutas, seminários grátis e a presença das principais marcas e academias de Jiu-Jitsu, a Expo vai contar com diversas personalidades. Rickson e Royce Gracie, por exemplo, estão confirmados para uma tarde de autógrafos, tanto no sábado como no domingo, no Centro de Convenções de Long Beach.

An MMA photographer since way back in the day when Tank Abbott was a worthy competitor, master of the lens Susumu Nagao was one of the stars to shine at the maiden installment of the World Jiu-Jitsu Expo, held last May 12.

Susumo flew over from Japan especially for the event and presented his exhibit to one of his biggest fans, also-photographer Esther Lin. The Japanese master reminded us that he started liking MMA in the days preceding the UFC, thanks to Shooto, and ever since, he has kept on top of the developments in the sport’s history.

Fotógrafo de MMA desde os tempos em que Tank Abbott era um competidor de respeito, o mestre das lentes Susumu Nagao foi uma das estrelas da World Jiu-Jitsu Expo, evento pioneiro realizado em 12 de maio.

Susumu veio do Japão especialmente para o evento, e apresentou sua exposição para uma de suas maiores fãs, a também fotógrafa respeitada Esther Lin. O mestre japonês lembra que começou a gostar de MMA antes do UFC, graças ao Shooto, e a partir dali procurou acompanhar a história dos esporte.

Os organizadores da World Jiu-Jitsu Expo confirmaram, e você viu em primeira mão pelo nosso Twitter. A luta de Jiu-Jitsu do astro do UFC Nick Diaz será contra Bráulio Estima, nas regras do Jiu-Jitsu sem kimono, e no peso até 82kg, ou 180 libras.

A 1ª World Jiu-Jitsu Expo será no dia 12 de maio em Long Beach, e a superluta será apenas uma das atrações. Antes de confirmar a participação do Carcará, atual supercampeão sem kimono do ADCC, a organização surpreendeu ao tentar BJ Penn como adversário de Nick. A produção do evento entrou em contato com JD Penn, irmão e empresário do ex-campeão do UFC, que declinou do convite, apesar da evidente empolgação.

“That would be huge! But right now BJ is retired from competing” (“Isso seria grandioso! Mas no momento BJ está aposentado das competições), respondeu JD Penn.

Sobre a opção por Bráulio Estima, os organizadores do evento capitaneado por Renzo Gracie dizem que o objetivo é oferecer uma experiência inesquecível para o fã de Jiu-Jitsu. Diferentemente do que alguns poderiam supor, jamais pensaram em dar um oponente fácil para Nick Diaz.

The organizers of the World Jiu-Jitsu Expo made the announcement first hand on our  Twitter account. The Jiu-Jitsu match featuring UFC star Nick Diaz has been made, with Bráulio Estima entering as his opponent under No-Gi Jiu-Jitsu rules, and the weight has been set at 82 kg, or 180 lbs.

The inaugural World Jiu-Jitsu Expo will be going down May 12 in Long Beach, California, and this supermatch will be just one of the attractions. Prior to current ADCC superchamp“Carcará’s” entrance into the picture, the promoters of the event made a surprise bid to bring in BJ Penn as Nick’s opponent, making contact with JD Penn, the brother and manager of the former UFC champion, who declined the invitation, despite apparent enthusiasm.

“That would be huge! But right now BJ is retiring from competing,” was JD Penn’s response.

On their going with  Bráulio Estima, the promoters of the event captained by Renzo Gracie say the aim is to offer Jiu-Jitsu fans an unforgettable experience. Contrary to what many may have assumed, they never considered feeding Nick Diaz an easy opponent.

The city of Long Beach, California, will host an event with a unique and grandiose purpose on the 12th of May.

The very first worldwide fair exclusively for Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, the World Jiu-Jitsu Expo I, will be overseen by Renzo Gracie, a renowned teacher and former UFC fighter.

“This event on the 12th of May will gather all the people and things connected to Jiu-Jitsu under one roof,” stated Renzo.

“I believe this inaugural event will be the start of something that will quickly blossom into one of the hottest sports fairs on the planet. The World Jiu-Jitsu Expo won’t just draw the sport’s big  names from the past and present, it’ll showcase the history, the myths and milestones that brought Jiu-Jitsu to become the phenomenon it is today,” added the Gracie.

PREMIERE OF JIU-JITSU “OSCARS”

The location will be the Long Beach Convention Center, and in the 8,000 square meters reserved for the fair, there will be such attractions as a series of free seminars conducted by ADCC superchamp Bráulio Estima, as well as the inaugural BJJ Awards, the Jiu-Jitsu Oscars, the BJJ Hall of Fame, classic-photo exhibitions, MMA and UFC aces attention and, of course, plenty of Jiu-Jitsu matches.
