Mahamed Aly won double gold at the Euro No-Gi. IBJJF.

To win double gold at the European Jiu-Jitsu No-Gi IBJJF Championship, held last weekend, Mahamed Aly had to beat some stiff competition. Some of these battles were won by submission, and one of them drew plenty of attention from the public present in the Rome, Italy venue. A flying armbar, similar to that used by Davi Ramos in a 2015 ADCC final, was how Aly finished one of his absolute matches.

“It was in the quarterfinals,” he tells Graciemag. “Soon before that, my opponent tried to submit me with a foot lock from the de la Riva guard. I attack his foot as well, forcing him to let the position go. Then he sat and stretched his arm; then I made the move and won.”

Following the European Championship that took place in Portugal, it’s time for the European Jiu-Jitsu No-Gi IBJJF Championship, set to take place this weekend in Rome, Italy.

Many of the biggest names of the sport are registered for the event, which will be held parallel to the Rome Open. We set aside a few of those names to help you get hyped for the championship.

Mahamed Aly, whose no-gi skills were evident as he secured his spot in the ADCC by winning the São Paulo Trials, is a favorite among super-heavyweights.

Also with plenty of momentum is Isaque Bahiense. The Copa Pódio Lightweight GP champion is enrolled in the middleweight division. Heavyweight Polish phenom Adam Wardzinski will try to nab another gold medal this season, but only if he can outperform veteran Pablo Popovich, whose results in past ADCCs speak for themselves.

Stay on the lookout also for featherweight Hiago George, lightweights AJ Agazarm and Alex Cabanes, as well as ultra-heavyweights Gabriel “Fedor” Lucas and Otávio “Oreia” Serafim.

The IBJJF will be in Rome, Italy for the Rome Open and the European No-Gi Championship on April 4 and 5. The capacity is almost full and whats more, the deadline is in a few hours at 11:59 p.m. PST!

The event will be held at Palazzetto dello Sport: Piazza Apollodoro 10 Rome, Italy 00196.

It was a busy weekend in Rome.

On Saturday, fighters wore their gis for the Rome Open, and Ricardo Evangelista won the black belt absolute championship.

Sunday was dedicated to the second edition of the European No-Gi. Caio Terra, from Brasa, feared not the heavier opponents and caught the black belt absolute championship title.

To achieve this feat, Caio defeated Alan Finfou (CheckMat) in the open final. Caio also won the light-featherweight, when he overcame Jordy Jean (Gracie Barra).

In the lightweight, AJ Agazarm (Gracie Barra) beat Daniel Riou (U.S. Power) in the final. Eduardo Rios (Frontline) nipped the gold in the medium.

The ultraheavyweight was dominated by Ricardo Evangelista (GFTeam) who beat John Michael (Malice) in the final.

At the teams competition, Gracie Barra took gold, followed by CheckMat and Alliance in third. Check out the results:

Faria(right) was the black belt open class champion

The first ever European No-Gi Jiu-Jitsu IBJJF championship took place this Sunday, in London, UK.

World champion Bernardo Faria was the black belt absolute champion.

He closed out the final with team member Dimitrius Souza.

Bernardo wrote about it on his Facebook page: “I closed out the open class with my mate Dimitrius Souza here in London. I fought twice, submitted the first guy with a leg lock and won the semifinal 8-0. I am so happy for having won yet another championship for Alliance, and this time with Dimi. Now, next stop is Los Angeles, for the Worlds No-Gi.”

In the adult black belt division, the champions were: Maxmiliano Campos (feather), Theodoro Canal (Light), Michael Langhi (middle), Eduardo Rios (medium-heavy), Dimitrius Souza (heavy), Bernardo Faria (super-heavy), Thiago Borges (Ultra-heavy), .

In the team competition, Gracie Barra finished first with 127pts; Check Mat was the runner-up with 123pts and Roger Gracie Academy was third with 116pts.

London Calling! Register now for the IBJJF European No-Gi

So you missed Wimbledon and the Olympics?

Here is another great event for you to go to in London.

The IBJJF is calling on competitors to take part in another one of its trademark events.

The first ever European No-Gi Championship is scheduled for next October 21 in London, England.

It will run alongside the London International Open (October 20) at the Crystal Palace National Sports Centre.

Registration end this Friday, October 12, so you’d better to hurry.

The cost is US$ 113 (or 72 pounds) for the European No-Gi only and US$ 206 (or 131 pounds) for both the Euro No-Gi and the London Open.
