After weeks of anticipation, the ADXC 4 is now officially completed. This Saturday, May 18th, some of the best competitors from Jiu-Jitsu and Grappling entered the merciless ADXC cage and fought tooth and nail to become the newest champions born at the Dojo de Paris, in the capital of France.

In the Grappling Main Event, the long-awaited duel between UFC powerhouses Benoit Saint Denis and Marc Diakiese gave fight fans everything they were hoping for and then some. Fighting in his homeland of France, Benoit used his grappling prowess to control the flow of the battle and emerge victorious in the ADXC cage. The fight almost ended quickly, with Benoit going for a neck attack and almost submitting in the very first round, but Diakiese’s top-notch defenses got him out of danger and kept the bout going, with many standing exchanges throughout the five rounds. But while Diakiese had some good moments, Benoit’s pressure was simply too much and the “God of War” left another foe in the dust, taking the win by unanimous decision and driving the crowd at the Dojo de Paris insane with the victory of their local champion.

Meanwhile, Espen Mathiesen spared no effort and is now a two-time champion of the ADXC. Fighting in the Jiu-Jitsu Main Event against France’s Leon Larman, the Norwegian athlete played to his strength and started the match by pulling and trying to use his berimbolo. Feeling the danger, Leon managed to avoid his opponent’s collar grips, but Espen spun and ended up in the foot. Going for the de la riva guard, Espen managed to get a better grip and got to the back, with Leon defending against the hooks but falling prey to a collar choke still in the first round.

The Grappling Co-Main Event brought another victory for Wales’ Ffion Davies in the ADXC. After sweeping from the closed guard and maintaining Morgan Black under complete pressure in the first round, Ffion finished the job in the following one. When the fighting started again, Ffion pulled Morgan into her guard, went up reaching the side, and quickly mounted, seizing her opponent’s arm and landing the winning armbar with a little over a minute on the clock.

In the Jiu-Jitsu Co-Main Event, Khaled Al Shehhi and Leonardo Mario found themselves evenly matched throughout the duel, which lasted five rounds of three minutes. Khaled started with a takedown, followed with a submission attempt and, when that didn’t work, used the single-leg to press Leonardo against the cage wall. Leonardo applied his pressure on Khaled’s guard, but the UAE powerhouse had a better run in the duel, using his technique to attack on top and even reach the side. When it was all said and done, Khaled had shown enough of his skills to convince the majority of the referees and conquer the title with a split decision.

While the Main and Co-Main Events were amazing in their own right, the ADXC 4 still had many impressive battles in its card. Check out below how the Main Card and Prelims Card matches went down!

Abdul-Kareem Al Sewady vs. Amin Ayoub

In another match-up between MMA athletes, Abdul-Kareem controlled the bout by putting pressure on Amin’s guard throughout the first two rounds, even managing to mount in the third round. Amin tried to attack with a guillotine, but Abdul-Kareem managed to avoid any danger and conquered the referees, who unanimously decided in favor of the “Pride of Palestine”.

Cassio Silva vs. Marko Oikarainen

In an intense rematch from the Abu Dhabi Grand Slam Rome 2024, the French-based Brazilian Cassio Silva once again defeated Finland’s Marko Oikarainen. With triangle, arm, and omoplata attacks, Cassio was the most dangerous competitor, even if Marko’s solid defenses kept him safe and sound in all three rounds. At the end of the fight, Cassio tipped the scales even further in his favor with another dangerous attack, taking the win by unanimous decision.

Nathiely de Jesus vs. Elizabeth Mitrovic

A very balanced duel between Nathiely and Elizabeth. With an active guard and dangerous sweep attempts, Eliza used her long legs to her favor against Nathiely, who used her experience and pressure from the top to control the duel. Being more active in the bout, Nathiely tried to take the back and even attacked the arm, convincing the referees and getting the win by unanimous decision.

Nia Blackman vs. Magdalena Loska

A brown belt hailing from the UK, Nia Black showed her resolve as she sought to beat the Polish black belt Magdalena Loska. Starting with the upper hand after attacking with a loop choke and an omoplata, Magdalena kept herself active while Nia countered her foot attacks, with the latter almost taking the back on the second and third rounds. With better moves from the guard and almost taking the back, Nia convinced the majority of the referees and got the win via split decision.

Steven Ray vs. Ibrahima Mane

In a duel between MMA veterans, Steven Ray proved himself an accomplished grappler. In the fight against Ibrahima, Steven had the best moves in the first and second rounds, going for foot and guillotine attacks. In the third round, with both fighters still standing, Steven set up another guillotine, took the fight to the ground, and got the submission with 2:05 on the clock.

Youness Bennouali vs. Florian Bayili

A brown belt fighting in his home country of France, Youness had an interesting duel against the Belgian black belt Florian Bayili. Keeping steady on his feet, Youness controlled the match with some good takedowns and submission attempts following the takedowns. Meanwhile, Florian employed his guard from below, but by the time the match ended, Youness’ stamina and techniques were enough to convince the majority of the referees, who gave him the win via split decision.

Geovanny Martinez vs. Nicolas Renier

10th Planet’s Geo Martinez used his grappling experience to make quick work of Nicolas Renier in the ADXC 4. The duel started with Geo pulling Nicolas into his closed guard and then quickly spinning around to reach the legs, locking a lightning-fast heel hook in just 27 seconds of the very first round.

Kalim Mastouri vs. Luca Anacoreta

An intense match between Kalim and Luca heated up the Prelims. With both sides dishing out attacks throughout the three rounds of the duel, triangle chokes and leglocks were the name of the game here. One of the bout’s highlights happened in the third round when Kalim took Luca down with a collar drag and almost took the back, with the latter narrowly escaping the position. At the end of it all, the referees unanimously declared Kalim the winner.

Kasper Larsen vs. Alexander Alexandrov

Kasper Larsen maintained the pressure throughout the fight, using his weight and technique to attack Alexander’s half-guard in the first two rounds. In the third round, after pushing Alexander against the cage wall, Kasper got Alexander down and quickly went for the back without the hooks, spinning below and entering a twister before locking the rear naked choke to take the victory.

Shamma Al Kalbani vs. Lina Grosset

A well-balanced fight between purple belts Shamma Al Kalbani and Lina Grosset. With the former hailing from the UAE and the latter fighting in her home country of France, the first round saw both athletes exchanging foot attacks while the following one brought a little more movement, with reversals and guard passing attempts. The third and final round saw Lina putting a lot of pressure from the top, but Shamma dished out some sneaky attacks and, at the end of it all, managed to convince the majority of the referees, who gave her the win via split decision.

No auge de seus 55 anos, Wellington “Megaton” Dias fez história no Mundial da IBJJF, neste sábado, 3 de junho. “Megaton” se tornou o primeiro faixa-coral a disputar a competição na categoria adulto. 

A nobre aventura do veterano da Gracie Humaitá no tatame durou menos de um minuto. O pai de Mackenzie foi finalizado pelo norueguês Espen Mathiesen com um bote letal na chave de pé, pelo peso leve. Mas nada que diminua a façanha do faixa-coral.

Espen stretched Jaakko Vilander’s arm to win gold.

Espen Mathiesen, the Norwegian black-belt representing team Kimura, has left his mark in the competitive scene once more, this time at the IBJJF’s Dublin Open, held early this month in the Irish capital.

A bronze medalist from this year’s World Championship, Mathiesen again put his dangerous guard to the test as he faced Jaakko Vilander in the middleweight final.

With a relentless game of legs and technical grips, Mathiesen ended up catching his opponent in a triangle, but the choice to finish on the arm came as a solution in order to produce the tap-out sooner.

Norueguês casca-grossa da equipe Kimura, Espen Mathiesen voltou a brilhar nos torneios, desta vez no Dublin Open da IBJJF, realizado no início de dezembro, na capital da Irlanda.

Bronze no Mundial da IBJJF deste ano, Espen colocou sua guarda arisca mais uma vez à prova, e na final do peso médio teve pela frente Jaakko Vilander.

Com um jogo incessante de pernas e pegadas técnicas, Espen acabou por dar o bote no triângulo, mas a opção de finalizar no braço veio como solução para o três tapinhas saírem mais rápido.

Espen sinks the choke for gold.

A lightweight who is qualified and signed up for the IBJJF Worlds, Norway’s Espen Mathiesen last Saturday fought in his final tournament before traveling to California. The Zurich Open found in Espen its lightweight champion.

To get to the title, the athlete from Kimura Norway had to use his elastic guard against Nicolas Penzer. After tangling up his opponent with his legs, Espen placed himself dangerously on the bottom, arrived on the back, and adjusted the choke until the win was his. You can check out the fight here:

Garantido com força total no peso leve do Mundial da IBJJF, o norueguês Espen Mathiesen, que já fez bonito em outros grandes campeonatos nesta temporada, encarou seu último torneio antes de partir para a Califórnia. O Zurich Open da IBJJF, realizado no último sábado, dia 19 de maio, teve Espen como campeão entre os leves.

Para tal, o atleta da Kimura Noruega teve que usar sua guarda elástica contra Nicolas Penzer. Depois de embolar o oponente com as pernas, Espen se colocou perigosamente por baixo, chegou nas costas e ajustou o estrangulamento até pegar.

Last Saturday Copa Podio landed in the city of Manaus, bringing a slew of thrilling bouts and crowning a new Middleweight GP king.

DJ Jackon of team Lloyd Irvin wrote a piece of history by becoming the first American to raise a Copa Podio trophy. He first won in the groups stage and then reached the final opposite Fellipe Andrew (Zenith), a brown-belt who had submitted four adversaries.

Prior to this, Xande Ribeiro and Roberto Cyborg stepped on the mat to represent Caboclos and Pantaneiros respectively, in a duel of states that was tied following the wins of Paulo Azambuja (Pantaneiros) over Eduardo Inojosa (Caboclos) and André Júlio (Caboclos) over Adley Lobato (Pantaneiros), as well as the draw between Fernandinho Vieira (Caboclos) and Marcel Gonçalves (Pantaneiros).

Xande and Cyborg’s match went back and forth. After the time was up with no clear winner, the organization added some overtime. A draw was declared after both fighters failed to gain an edge.

Another exciting match pitted Isaque Bahiense against Espen Mathiesen. These two Lightweight GP finalists from a previous installment this time did a superfight. Espen, with his solid guard game, and Isaque, with powerful pass attempts, both put on a show, with Isaque ending up as the winner due to taking fewer penalties.

A selva amazônica, repleta de feras, teve uma adição atípica à sua fauna no último sábado, dia 12. A Copa Podio de Jiu-Jitsu aportou na cidade de Manaus, e trouxe para o público local, apaixonado pela arte suave, grandes batalhas e um novo rei para o seu GP de Pesos Médios.

DJ Jackson, faixa-preta da equipe Lloyd Irvin, entra para a história do evento ao se consagrar campeão da disputa como primeiro americano a levantar um troféu do GP na organização. Para tal, DJ superou a fase de grupos e chegou a finalíssima contra Fellipe Andrew (Zenith), faixa-marrom que chegou à final com propriedade, após finalizar quatro oponentes.

Antes, em uma das lutas mais aguardadas no evento, Xande Ribeiro e Roberto Cyborg pisaram no tatame para decidir o duelo entre Caboclos e Pantaneiro, duelo de times que se encontrava empatado até então, após as vitórias de Paulo Azambuja (Pantaneiros) sobre Eduardo Inojosa (Caboclos),  André Júlio (Caboclos) derrotou Adley Lobato (Pantaneiros) e do empate entre Fernandinho Vieira (Caboclos) e Marcel Gonçalves (Pantaneiros).

O duelo foi pegado, com chances para os dois lados. Após o tempo regulamentar, o duelo estava empatado. A organização colocou mais um tempo para definir o empasse, mas os dois atletas, com tudo de si na disputa, terminaram por não definir um vencedor, e a disputa, de fato, terminou igual.

Ainda no evento, outra disputa que sacudiu foi o duelo entre Isaque Bahiense e Espen Mathiesen. Finalistas do GP de Pesos Leves, a feras voltaram a se encontrar para uma superluta no evento. Espen com seu forte jogo de guarda e Isaque com implacáveis tentativas de passagem deram um show de Jiu-Jitsu, mas a vitória no fim das contas veio para o campeão dos leves Isaque, que venceu a disputa na contagem de punições.

The king of Copa Podio’s Lightweight GP, a title won in February, Isaque Bahiense will return to the promotion for a superfight opposite runner-up Espen Mathiesen. The match, scheduled to take place concurrently with the Middleweight GP next Saturday in Manaus, will go for a maximum 10 minutes and allow a fighter to win by points or submission.

Isaque, 21, had this to say about how he has changed since February: “I’ve matured and learned a lot. My game is very explosive, and I always act on top a lot, but when I became a black-belt I opened up the range of variations for my game. Now I also play guard, I know how to move on the bottom, and I’ve proven that in some matches. However, my priority is always to use my explosive game, to minimize in every way my opponent’s ways of moving.”

Bahiense won his first encounter with Mathiesen on points. On what he expects of the second one, he said, “It will be a duel will more movement, and a good-looking one from my part. We’ve had time to prepare and study each other. Ten minutes is a long time, and sometimes we wait too long to do something, always thiking, ‘there’s still a lot of time.’ Waiting too long to act sometimes can cost you dearly.”

Rei do GP dos Leves da Copa Podio, título conquistado em fevereiro deste ano, Isaque Bahiense retorna ao evento para uma superluta contra Espen Mathiesen, vice-campeão do GP dos Leves. O duelo, marcado para o GP de Pesos Médios, que rola no próximo sábado, dia 12 em Manaus, terá duração de 10 minutos e permite apenas pontos ou finalização.

Isaque, 21 anos, garante que mudou desde a sua conquista principal dentro da Copa Podio. Agora, o jovem faixa-preta da Alliance sente que está mais maduro e pronto para soltar o jogo, até se for preciso fazer guarda.

“Amadureci e aprendi muito. Meu jogo é muito explosivo e sempre atuo bastante por cima, mas quando cheguei na faixa-preta eu abri o leque de variações para o meu jogo. Agora eu também faço guarda, sei me movimentar bem por baixo e já provei isso em algumas lutas. Contudo, minha prioridade é sempre usar meu jogo explosivo, minimizar de todas as formas a movimentação do meu oponente”, conta Isaque, que aproveitou ainda para destrinchar a nova batalha contra o guardeiro norueguês, Espen. Na primeiro confronto, ainda pelo GP dos Leves, Isaque saiu vencedor nos pontos.

“Será um duelo com mais movimentação e bonito de se ver da minha parte, tivemos tempo para nos preparar e estudar. 10 minutos é um longo tempo e, algumas vezes, esperamos muito para fazer algo, sempre pensando: ‘ainda falta muito tempo.’ Esperar muito para fazer, às vezes, pode custar caro!”

Ser o atual campeão do Grand Prix de Pesos Leves não deixa Isaque pressionado para os próximos desafios.

“Nada me pressiona e tudo o que aconteceu ficou no passado. Hoje trabalho para ser melhor a cada dia e superar meus futuros desafios. É dormir e acordar para ser campeão. Meu objetivo no Jiu-Jitsu é conquistar os títulos principais, conhecer a minha melhor versão e pode ajudar na evolução do Jiu Jitsu”, conta.

Isaque também aproveitou para dar sua opinião sobre o GP dos Médios e apostou em dois atletas que, talvez, façam a final pela taça de campeão.

“O GP está bem equilibrado. Eu acredito que essa final será Felipe Trovo x DJ Jackson”, encerra.

In the brown belt, future champions start giving us hints of what they might end up achieving in the sport. It’s the case of Espen Mathiesen, a Kimura Nova União athlete who handily dominated the brown belt lightweight division of the IBJJF Pan, held in March in California.

But, prior to that event, young Mathiesen had already shown his talent opposite dangerous black-belts such as Delson Pé de Chumbo, Diego Borges and Isaque Bahiense in the Copa Pódio Lightweight GP.
