A atividade, sem kimono e com as conhecidas luvinhas do Ultimate, visa afiar as quedas e o trabalho de grappling da fera enquanto chega ao solo com a missão de finalizar. O americano, ensaboado, faz de tudo para dificultar o trabalho do brasileiro, que tem poucas chances de finalizar mas aproveita todas as posições de superioridade.

Em sua primeira edição, no dia 27 de fevereiro, nos EUA, o evento Absolute Championship Berkut Jiu-Jitsu reuniu grandes nomes da arte suave mundial em dois GPs estelares, nas categorias até 75kg e até 85kg.

Na divisão mais leve, nomes como Michel Langhi, Davi Ramos, AJ Agazarm, Marcio André e AJ Souza integravam a disputa. Mas foi Edwin Najmi, da Gracie Barra, que levou a melhor.

Para ficar com o título e o belo cinturão do evento, o jovem americano venceu três lutas. Na derradeira, que valia o campeonato, Najimi ficou frente a frente com Márcio André, da Nova União.

O americano chegou engasgado após uma recente derrota para Marcinho, mas o brasileiro ditou o ritmo na final do ACBJJ. Após dois rounds de domínio, restava para Edwin buscar a finalização para se salvar, e com perseverança o americano conseguiu pegar no triângulo.

Na outra final, Gabriel Arges, companheiro de Edwin na GB e também pupilo de Rômulo Barral, bateu Otavio Souza pelo cinturão.

The last round saw a big twist. Najmi seemed in better shape and managed to pass guard. Then he took the back. Trying to defend the back, André turned, and Najmi sank a deadly triangle. Watch it all in the video below.

It was a night of partying for four-time world BJJ champion Romulo Barral. That’s because he saw some of his students come out as winners of the Championship Berkut World Grand Prix (ACBJJ), held last Saturday at Santiago Canyon College in California. Edwin Najmi took down the 75kg class, whereas world champion Gabriel Arges nabbed the 85kg. Each fought three times.

Najmi subbed Daud Adaev via flying triangle. Then he defeated two-time world champion Michael Langhi via decision. Finally he faced Marcio André, who had beat Davi Ramos, and managed to finish him via triangle.

Arges first beat Josh Hinger 3-0, then beat Arnaldo Maidana via triangle, and finally beat his three-time world champion teammate Otavio Sousa with a knee lock.

The co-main event saw ADCC champion João Assis fight Mikey Perez, who replaced Jeff Monson last-minute for the no-gi match. After many attempts at passing Perez’s guard, Assis won via unanimous decision to win the heavyweight belt.

Also victorious was Edwin Najmi. The black-belt under Rômulo Barral faced Nathan Mandelsohn, who replaced DJ Jackson. Najmi won via unanimous decision to win the welterweight belt.

Professional BJJ promotion Fight To Win has added two superfights to its Feb. 3 show in Los Angeles. They are Edwin Najmi vs. DJ Jackson and Garry Tonon vs. Gabriel Arges.

BJJ Worlds runner-up Najmi will face a momentum-filled Jackson, who recently took down Fight to Win Pro 18 and the Grappling Pro Championship — beating three opponents in the latter, including Tonon, and snagging the 10,000-dollar top prize. This fight — a ten-minute no-gi, submission-only affair — gets top billing.

The co-main event will see Garry Tonon, who won several tourneys in 2016, face world BJJ champ Gabriel Arges under basically the same rules, but with heel hooks.

The show will also pit AJ Agazarm and Bill Cooper against each other, as well as João Assis against Jeff Monson. More announcements to come, so stay tuned.

First Najmi subbed Bill Cooper via D’arce choke. Then he fought Marcelo Mafra, who had beat Mansher Khera. Najmi attempted several neck attacks but couldn’t break through. At the end of the six-minute match, Najmi was awarded the unanimous win.

Finally, Najmi fought John Combs, who had beat Brian Morizzi and Sean Roberts. Najmi quickly attacked Combs’ foot and finished on an Estima lock, named after Victor Estima.

The Guatemala Open Superfight event, held last Sunday, featured big BJJ clashes. Sister to Rodolfo Vieira, Ana Carolina Vieira fought world champion Luiza Monteiro and came out the winner via arm triangle.

Worlds lightweight runner-up Edwin Najmi faced Kevin Mahecha and submitted him via ankle lock. Kim Terra, Caio Terra’s brother, finished Rafael “Barata” Freitas via bow-and-arrow choke.

Mahamed Aly at the 2015 Worlds

Every year the black belt division gets a boost of talent as brown belts get promoted and add even more hardship to the game.

The 2016 world championship will be no exception, as a bunch of the best brown belts in 2015 will be registered for the black belt division.

We have highlighted 8 of these newcomers, but there are many more out there.

Here we go.

Michael Musumeci Jr.

The 2015 brown belt light-featherweight world champion has already debuted in the black belt division in great fashion. Looking incredibly thin, he signed up for the roosterweight division at the 2016 Pan and made it to the top of the podium. For the 2016 Worlds, Mikey and his sister Tammi have moved to California to train with Gui and Rafa Mendes at AOJ Academy, which should generate some great results. Mikey is signed up for the roosterweight once again, but maybe going up to light-feather is his best chance to win another gold medal for Team USA, which doesn’t happen in the male division since 2007.

Just like Musumeci, Najmi won his division (lightweight) at the 2015 Worlds. After getting his black belt, he struck gold for the first time at the 2016 Pan, with a beautiful Estima lock on Francisco Iturralde. The 2016 Worlds black belt lightweight division will be a true mine field, with Lucas Lepri, Michael Langhi, AJ Agazarm, JT Torres, etc. Najmi is another big talent to make things even more complicated.

Another PSLPB Cicero Costha talent, Yago Souza closed out the brown belt middleweight division in 2015 with his teammate Manuel Ribamar Filho. Then, he got his black belt and already did great at the 2016 European and the 2016 Pan, wining the middleweight division both in Lisbon and Irvine. It should interesting to see Yago going against the likes of Otavio Sousa, Claudio Calasans Jr, Victor Estima and Vitor Oliveira, just to name a few.

The 2015 brown belt open class runner-up also transitioned to the black belt and has already made his presence felt. He finished third in the heavyweight division at the 2016 Pan and won the same division at the recent 2016 Brazilian Nationals. The heavyweight division with the likes of Tim Spriggs, André Galvão, Erberth Santos, Jackson Souza, among others should be a great challenge for the newcomer.

The double gold campaign at the 2015 Worlds puts some pressure on Aly for his first Worlds as a black belt. Already registered in the ultra-heavy division, Mahamed should encounter some big competition, including Alex Trans, Marcus Buchecha, Gabriel Lucas, João Gabriel Rocha, among others.

Another talent coming out of Romulo Barral’s lineage, Arges finished third at the brown belt middleweight division of the 2015 Worlds. As a black belt, he did great at the 2015 Irvine Open and then travelled to Lisbon for another great showing at the 2016 European, closing out the medium-heavy division with his Professor Barral.

Fresh out of Marcelo Garcia’s talent factory, Khera (and his teammate Jon Satava) will be making his first appearance at the Worlds as a black belt. They could have done it last year, but they did not have time to add up the 50pts necessary to qualify after being promoted. Khera is signed up for the lightweight division while Satava is registered for the middleweight.

The Hulk won the brown belt medium-heavy division at the 2016 Worlds. After getting his black belt, he jumped right into the mix and managed some big results. most importantly the medium-heavy division at the 2015 Worlds No-Gi. Just recently, he won the medium-heavy division at the 2016 Las Vegas Open. Lucas should be another big hurdle at the medium-heavy in Long Beach.
