Among the Ultimate Fighting Championship’s characteristics is the ability to bolster tourism anywhere it sets up shop. Fans of the event find it easy to transit from city, state or country to see the show. At the fight between Anderson Silva and Vitor Belfort in Las Vegas, for example, one couldn’t help but notice the large presence of Brazilians around the Mandalay Bay hotel and casino and in the arena.

Although in Brazil tickets will be offered at accessible rates, Dana White guarantees, the promotion is counting on a market with buying power. Hence the expectation that fans from all across Brazil will pack the HSBC Arena on August 27. All one has to do is scan the card to understand that it’s not going to be a party just for Rio de Janeiro locals, despite it being called UFC Rio.

Of course, a good portion of the fighters identify with the city, even though not all of them are from there, like Rodrigo Minotauro, Anderson Silva, Vitor Belfort, José Aldo… All these big names are expected. So far, Anderson is the only one confirmed, while the others still have a chance to be there or have been vetoed, as is the case with Belfort.

On the other hand, some athletes not expected now figure on the card. While Brazilians are still calling for some big names, so far the card is an attraction for the entire Brazilian national territory.

Anderson identifies a lot with Rio, where he spends most of his time while in Brazil, but he came to fame in Curitiba and is a native of São Paulo, cheering for Corinthians soccer team. Luiz Banha is also from São Paulo. Shogun, a national hero, draws the public from the south, as do Thiago Tavares and knockout artist Maiquel Falcão.

The central-west is represented by Brasília’s Paulo Thiago, first announced on the Portal do Vale Tudo website. Another who lives in Rio, but hails from Minas Gerais, Rousimar Toquinho looks likely to make it onto the card, as GRACIEMAG.com found out. Now Edson Jr. is from the town of Nova Friburgo, in the mountains of Rio de Janeiro state.

A possible call up of José Aldo would boost the public from Amazonas state, while Minotauro draws those from Bahia. But the truth is, with all these names, folks will be coming from as far as Japan to watch; you can count on it.

O Ultimate Fighting Championship tem, entre tantas características, a capacidade de movimentar o turismo por onde passa. Não é difícil fãs do evento se transportarem de cidade, estado ou país para acompanhar o show. Na luta entre Anderson Silva e Vitor Belfort em Las Vegas, por exemplo, era notória a grande presença de brasileiros nos arredores do hotel e cassino Mandalay Bay e dentro da arena.

Apesar de no Brasil – garantiu Dana White – oferecerem ingressos com valores acessíveis, o evento aposta num mercado com capacidade de consumir. Portanto, a expectativa é de que fãs de todo o Brasil lotem as dependências do HSBC Arena, no dia 27 de agosto. Basta perceber a montagem do card para entender que não vai ser apenas uma festa carioca, apesar do show se chamar UFC Rio.

Lógico, existe a identificação de muitos lutadores com o a cidade maravilhosa, embora nem todos sejam cariocas, como Rodrigo Minotauro, Anderson Silva, Vitor Belfort e José Aldo… Todos esses nomes eram aguardados. Até o momento, Anderson é o único confirmado, enquanto os outros seguem com possibilidade ou estão vetados, caso de Belfort.

Por outro lado, alguns atletas não tão esperados já estão garantidos. Se os brasileiros ainda clamam a presença de alguns ídolos, até agora o card está atrativo para fãs de todo o território nacional.

Anderson tem grande identificação com o Rio, onde passa a maior parte do tempo no Brasil, mas ganhou nome em Curitiba e é paulista, torcedor do Corinthians. Luiz Banha também é paulista. Shogun, ídolo nacional, chama o público do Sul, o mesmo caso das feras Thiago Tavares e do nocauteador Maiquel Falcão.

A região centro-oeste conta com o representante de Brasília Paulo Thiago, notícia dada em primeira mão pelo pessoal do Portal do Vale Tudo. Outro que mora no Rio, mas vem de Minas Gerais, Rousimar Toquinho tem tudo para aparecer no card, segundo apurou o GRACIEMAG.com. Já Edson Jr. é da região serrana do Rio de Janeiro, Nova Friburgo.

Uma possível escalação de José Aldo poderia dar uma alavancada no público amazonense, enquanto Minota chama os baianos. Mas, na verdade, com todos esses nomes, vai ter gente vindo até do Japão, pode apostar.

Unlike in recent editions of the pre-event weight-in, there were no scandalous antics during the staredowns. Even so, the main event between Maurício Shogun and Jon Jones, for the light heavyweight title, promises great emotion.

“I feel fine, it’s the greatest opportunity of my life and is definitely a good situation,” said Jones, the challenger.

“He’s certainly a great fighter, but the belt is mine. I see some of the things he said as disrespectful. I can even understand him feeling confident, but tomorrow we’ll see who the better man is,” says Shogun.

Ao contrário das edições recentes, não houve encaradas polêmicas. Mesmo assim, a luta principal entre Maurício Shogun e Jon Jones, que vale o cinturão de meio-pesados, promete grandes emoções.

“Me sinto bem, é a grande oportunidade da minha vida e definitivamente é uma boa situação”, diz Jones, o desafiante.

“Com certeza ele é um grande lutador, mas este cinturão é meu. Encaro algumas coisas que ele disse como desrespeito. Até entendo que ele esteja confiante, mas amanhã a gente vai ver quem é o melhor”, fala Shogun.

This Saturday’s UFC 123 event brought plenty of excitement to Detroit, Michigan. Check out the breakdown of the main card:

Quinton “Rampage” Jackson vs. Lyoto Machida

The two first rounds were even. Jackson would advance and Lyoto would respond with his traditional counter attack. In the second round, Rampage managed to get a takedown, but the karate stylist got immediately back to his feet. The third round was Lyoto’s, as he launched a salvo of strikes, got the takedown, passed guard, mounted, and even tried for an armbar. The judges understood Jackson to have gotten the best of the first two rounds, though, outweighing Machida’s performance in the third. The split decision went to Rampage, who even expressed surprise with the result. Another controversial decision in the UFC.

BJ Penn vs. Matt Hughes

The deciding match in the trilogy of BJ Penn versus Matt Hughes was the Hawaiian’s, taking the lead two to one. Unlike his last two performances, against Frankie Edgar, BJ came back determined. Hughes was coming off of important wins against Renzo Gracie and Ricardo Cachorrão, but couldn’t handle the pace BJ brought on in boxing, throwing precision strikes from the opening bell. Hughes was dropped by a potent straight blow to the chin and Penn threw a few more in for good measure until the referee intervened, all in only 21 seconds.

Maiquel Falcão vs. Gerald Harris

Maiquel Falcão showed veteran-level experience in his UFC debut, against Gerald Harris, who was until then undefeated in the promotion. In the first round he threw potent strikes and nearly got the finish with a rear-naked choke but Harris was saved by the bell. In the second Falcão again landed with good strikes and kicks to made it to back mount. The final round saw the two fighters studying each other. Following the round, Falcão took the fight by unanimous decision.

Tim Boetsch vs. Phil Davis

Phil Davis used his knees well and got a takedown in the second round that would prove decisive. After sinking a kimura lock, the fighter set up a variation of the armlock that left Tim Boetsch no choice but to tap out 2:55 minutes into the round.

George Sotiropoulos vs. Joe Lauzon

Australia’s George Sotiropoulos again put on a Jiu-Jitsu clinic. The first round against Joe Lauzon was a hard-fought one, with an exchange of sweeps, but Sotiropoulos came out ahead in the end. In the second, he set about imposing his ground game and set um a fight-ending kimura lock at 2:43 minutes of the round. With the result, Sotiropoulos notches his seventh win in the UFC and gets close to a lightweight title.

The preliminaries also offered heaps of action. Brazilian newcomer Edson Jr. had a solid debut, against Mike Lullo, punishing him with kicks and managing the knockout in the second round. Nik Lentz took a unanimous decision over Tyson Griffin, as did Mark Munoz against Aaron Simpson. Now Dennis Hallman knocked out Karo Parisyan in just 1:47 minutes of combat.

O UFC 123, que aconteceu neste sábado, trouxe boas disputas a Detroit, nos EUA. Confira a análise dos principais combates e todos os resultados:

Quinton “Rampage” Jackson x Lyoto Machida

Os dois primeiros rounds foram muito parelhos. Jackson partia para cima e Lyoto respondia com o tradicional contra-ataque. Na segunda parcial, Rampage conseguiu quedar, mas o karateca se levantou rapidamente. O terceiro assalto foi de Lyoto, que partiu com tudo na trocação, derrubou, passou a guarda, montou e ainda tentou um armlock. Na decisão dos árbitros, ficou entendido que Rampage levou a melhor nos dois primeiros rounds, superando a superioridade de Machida na última parcial. Vitória por decisão dividida para o americano, que ficou surpreso. Mais uma decisão polêmica no Ultimate.

BJ Penn x Matt Hughes

Na decisão da trilogia entre BJ Penn e Matt Hughes, melhor para o havaiano, que desempatou o placar (2 a 1). Ao contrário das últimas duas lutas contra Frankie Edgar, que custaram o cinturão de leves, BJ voltou decidido. Hughes vinha de vitórias importantes contra Renzo Gracie e Ricardo Cachorrão, mas não suportou a velocidade de BJ no boxe, que conectou socos certeiros desde o primeiro segundo. Depois de um potente direto, Hughes caiu em knockdown e Penn precisou desferir mais poucos golpes para o juiz intervir, tudo isso em apenas 21s.

Maiquel Falcão x Gerald Harris

Na estreia pelo UFC, Maiquel Falcão mostrou experiência de veterano contra Gerald Harris, que estava invicto na organização. No primeiro round, castigou com potentes socos e quase finalizou nas costas. Harris foi salvo pelo gongo. Na segunda parcial, Falcão novamente acertou bem com socos e chutes para depois atacar as costas. O assalto final foi sem grandes emoções, com os lutadores se estudando. Na decisão dos juízes, preferência para Falcão em decisão unânime.  

Tim Boetsch x Phil Davis

Seguindo o ritmo de finalizações da noite, Phil Davis trabalhou bem as joelhadas e quedou para definir no segundo assalto. Depois de encaixar uma chave Kimura, o lutador fez uma variação da chave de braço que só restou a Tim Boetsch dar os três tapinhas quando o cronômetro marcava 2min55s.    

George Sotiropoulos x Joe Lauzon

O australiano George Sotiropoulos mostrou mais uma vez que tem o Jiu-Jitsu afiado. Contra Joe Lauzon, fez um primeiro round duro, que teve troca de raspagens, mas conseguiu levar vantagem no fim. Na segunda etapa, tratou de trabalhar no chão e conseguiu apertar com a chave Kimura, aos 2min43s. Com o resultado, Sotiropoulos chega à sétima vitória no UFC e fica próximo da chance pelo título de leves.

Nas lutas preliminares, muitas feras em ação. O basileiro Edson Jr. estreou bem contra Mike Lullo e, depois de castigar com chutes, conseguiu o nocaute no segundo assalto. Nik Lentz não bobeou contra Tyson Griffin e venceu por decisão unânime, mesmo resultado do combate entre Mark Munoz contra Aaron Simpson. Já Dennis Hallman nocauteou Karo Parisyan em apenas 1min47s de luta.

O Ultimate Fighting Championship fez a sua tradicional pesagem nesta sexta-feira, em Detroit. Neste sábado, acontece o UFC 123 e a prévia do show, como sempre, foi um espetáculo a parte. 

Ao contrário do que a maioria imaginava, BJ Penn e Matt Hughes têm sido verdadeiros cavalheiros entre si. Neste sábado, quando se enfrentam pela terceira vez, os ânimos devem ficar mais elevados, já que um dos dois vai ficar atrás no placar, empatado com um triunfo para cada lado. 

Se Penn e Hughes preferem a cordialidade, o clima ficou mais quente entre Quinton Jackson e Lyoto Machida. Não chegou a rolar aquele empurrão estilo Wanderlei Silva. Presidente da organização, Dana White tratou de evitar qualquer contato mais brusco.

The Ultimate Fighting Championship held its traditional pre-fight weight-in event this Friday in Detroit. This Saturday UFC 123 will take place, and as always, the pre-show event was a show apart.

Unlike what most would imagine, BJ Penn and Matt Hughes were true gentlemen to each other. Facing off for a third time, the match promises even greater excitement for each of the former UFC champions holding a win apiece.

If Penn and Hughes were cordial, things heated up between Quinton Jackson and Lyoto Machida. They didn’t go as far as to shove each other a la Wanderlei Silva. UFC president Dana White took it upon himself to keep the two apart.

Having won his weight group and the absolute at the Jiu-Jitsu Worlds as a brown belt, Marcus “Bochecha” Almeida lived up to expectations and had a great run at black belt. His first major result came in no-gi competition, this month. Bochecha closed out the heavyweight division with João Assis and the absolute with Cyborg. Speaking with GRACIEMAG.com, the beast from the coastal São Paulo city of Santos analyzes the season coming to a close and his perspectives coming in 2011. First, though, he shows how he’s keen to the UFC 123 show coming up this Saturday.

How do you assess your first year of competition as a black belt?

It was the best year of my life in every way. Both professionally and personally, things came together as best they could and with what I like doing: competing, training, and teaching. I did well in all the competitions, winning at weight and open weight. But I could feel the weight of the new belt, always against more experienced opponents. I feel I’m learning more and more with every competition.

What’s your aim for next year?

We’ll start 2011 in everything. Cavaca and Raphael Chaves will do a European tour. That’s why we’ll be training hard starting in January, but our main focus is the Pan, World Pro, and, of course, the Worlds.

What do you need to do to win the Worlds?

I feel that in any competition the secret is not just to train, but to know how to train properly. That’s why we’re not going to take any rest until then. I’m really anxious to see how I’ll do. I guarantee I’ll do my best and fight to win. Is winning the absolute at the 2011 Worlds already a reachable dream?

That’s for sure any Jiu-Jitsu fighter’s dream, and it’s mine too. I know that before then I’ll face loads of tough fighters, but I’ll always fight in pursuit of this dream and objective.

Will you compete again in 2010?

After the No-Gi Worlds the plan was to rest, but I’ll go to Brazil to compete at the World League. So I’ll go without rest. We’re training hard, Thiago “Baiano”, Chaves “Cabeçudinho”, and I. They will give us a lot to talk about, as will Master Cavaca, who also had a great year and will go full steam into 2011.

Depois de vencer na faixa-marrom o peso e absoluto do Mundial de Jiu-Jitsu, Marcus Almeida, o Bochecha, fez valer as expectativas e foi bem na faixa-preta. O primeiro grande resultado em mundiais veio sem kimono, neste mês. Bochecha fechou a categoria superpesado com João Assis e o absoluto com Cyborg Abreu. Em conversa com o GRACIEMAG.com, o a fera de Santos, no litoral de São Paulo, analisa a temporada e as perspectivas para 2011. Antes, se mostra atento ao UFC 123, que acontece neste sábado: 

“Gostaria de desejar sorte para nosso grande irmão Edson Jr, que estreia no UFC. Ele vai arrebentar!”.

Como analisa o seu primeiro ano de competições na faixa-preta?

Foi o melhor ano da minha vida em todos os sentidos. Tanto no lado profissional como no pessoal, as coisas todas se encaminharam para melhor e com o que gosto de fazer: lutar, treinar e ensinar. Fui bem em todas as competições, tendo vencido peso e absoluto. Mas deu para perceber o peso da nova faixa, sempre contra adversários mais experientes. A cada competição sinto que aprendo mais.

Qual o principal foco no próximo ano? 

Em 2011 já começaremos com tudo. O Cavaca e o Raphael Chaves farão um tour pela Europa. Por isso, começaremos a treinar forte desde janeiro, mas o nosso principal foco é o Pan, o World Pro e, com certeza, o Mundial. 
 
O que precisa fazer para vencer no Mundial? 

Acho que em qualquer competição o segredo não é apenas treinar, mas saber treinar. Por isso não vamos ter descanso até lá. Estou muito ansioso para ver como me sairei. Garanto que vou dar o meu melhor e lutar para vencer.

Ganhar o absoluto do Mundial em 2011 já é um sonho possível? 

Isso sem dúvida é o sonho de todo lutador de Jiu-Jitsu, e o meu também. Sei que até lá enfrentarei muitas pedreiras, mas sempre lutarei em busca desse sonho e objetivo.  

Luta ainda em 2010?

Depois do Mundial Sem Kimono o plano era descansar, mas vou ao Brasil para lutar o World League. Então estou sem descanso. Estamos treinando forte eu, Thiago “Baiano” e Chaves “Cabeçudinho”. Eles vão dar o que falar junto com o mestrão Cavaca, que também teve um ótimo ano e vai chegar com tudo em 20011.
