Bruno Carvalho has been the talk of the Thai boxing town in Brazil for some time now, even holding a win over UFC ace Edson Barboza.

With a record of 8 wins and 2 losses in MMA, and often fighting opponents with a considerable size advantage, the featherweight is now looking to greener pastures, now that his last outing showed he has undergone a marked evolution in the grappling department.

Last Saturday Carvalho, who is both trainer and student to the UFC’s Cristiano Marcello, put to his gentle-art skills to good use in outpointing a game Maicon “Gladiador” Bastos at Iron Fight, an MMA event held in Feira de Santana, in the Brazilian state of Bahia.

“I feel it was a good fight. Maicon brought it on. It’s like he’s made of rubber, and he had good boxing, not to mention he was a real warrior,” said the fighter who put in a dazzling performance, sinking omoplatas, armbars and americanas that looked to be fight-stoppers.

“I couldn’t get the finish. I was just missing a few details in the positions, but I’m already working on them. I demand a lot of myself and don’t like making mistakes,” said Bruno, who some in the Brazilian press feel has what it takes to make a move to the UFC.

“I’ve been working hard to get into the UFC. I’m training to be ready when the opportunity arises. I know my time will come,” he added.

Bruno Carvalho é um atleta gabaritado no muay thai há tempos, a ponto de já ter vencido em pé o astro do UFC Edson Barboza.

Após vitórias no Brasil, Bruno (8v, 2d) tem mostrado uma evolução grande em seu Jiu-Jitsu, e já parece maduro para voos mais altos no MMA.

No último sábado, o treinador e aluno de Cristiano Marcello pôs em prática suas habilidades na arte suave para vencer Maicon “Gladiador” Bastos, no evento de MMA Iron Fight, em Feira de Santana, na Bahia.

“Acho que foi uma boa luta, o Maicon valorizou bem o combate – ele parecia uma borracha, mostrou um bom boxe, além de ser muito guerreiro”, disse o lutador que impressinou pela boa exibição, encaixando armlocks e omoplatas, além de trabalhar na guarda e chegar à montada.

“Não consegui finalizar, faltaram pequenos detalhes nas posições, mas já estou trabalhando isso. Eu me cobro muito e não gosto de errar”, garantiu Bruno, que para alguns colegas da imprensa brasileira é um dos atletas com potencial para ganhar em breve sua primeira chance no UFC.

“Venho trabalhando forte para entrar no UFC, estou treinando para estar pronto quando a oportunidade aparecer. Eu sei que minha hora vai chegar”, completou.

World elite black belt Gilbert Durinho is starting to see the same success in MMA as he’s had in the gentle art. Last Saturday, August 4, the Gi and No-Gi world champion overcame Paulo Roberto via technical knockout at Champion Fight in Salvador, Bahia State, Brazil. “It was a good knockout. Truth is, I was setting up for the submission but heard the referee tell him that if he didn’t defend himself, he’d stop the fight. So I upped the volume of punches and the ref stepped in. But I prefer to get the tapout; that’s the focus when I fight,” said Durinho, who saw his win tally rise to four in MMA.

“I always try to pay attention to the details, no matter how small they may be, and I always look to correct my mistakes, even in victory. I feel that at this early stage in my career it’s common to make mistakes, and I’m trying to minimize them. I won the fight really quickly, in a little under a minute, but I know I made mistakes, and I’m trying to correct them so as to keep in constant evolution,” he remarked.

“I feel I wasn’t fully focused in the fight. I threw a low kick, wasn’t finding my range or moving well, tried a push kick to the belly and ended up slipping, falling; I got up quickly and the fight continued. Now I’m working on my mistakes, my concentration, distance and other errors,” he added.

As for the future, the priority is to continue training and helping Vitor Belfort. “Now it’s all about training. I want to learn more, evolve more, feel more and more comfortable in there. I expect to have another fight in early September. Now the focus is on Vitor’s fight. He has to be 100% for his next fight, but I’ll be training, and if it doesn’t throw his focus off, I’ll fight again in September,” said Durinho, who still isn’t putting Jiu-Jitsu competition on the backburner.

“There’s no way to put off Jiu-Jitsu. I train with and without the gi a lot. I love it. I’m practically addicted to it. There’s no way for me to not practice Jiu-Jitsu. But it’s become a bit tough to compete. I do hope to compete again this year. There are two competitions I want to be in, if I’m in Brazil. One of them is the South American Championship, which I’ll do my all to be at. If I’m in the States, I’ll do the No-Gi Worlds, which I really love a lot as well. I’ll do one or the other,” he said in closing.

Fera dos tatames, o faixa-preta de Jiu-Jitsu Gilbert Durinho começa a seguir a mesma trajetória nos cercados do MMA. No último sábado, dia 4 de agosto, o campeão mundial com e sem kimono superou Paulo Roberto por nocaute técnico, no evento Champion Fight, em Salvador, na Bahia. “Foi bom nocautear. Na verdade eu estava abrindo caminho para finalizar, mas ouvi o juiz dizendo que se ele não tentasse se defender, que ele iria acabar a luta. Aí aumentei o volume de golpes e o juiz interrompeu. Mas ainda prefiro finalizar, esse é o foco nas lutas”, disse o lutador, que chegou à quarta vitória no MMA.

“Eu tento sempre prestar atenção aos detalhes, por menores que eles sejam, e sempre quero corrigir meus erros, mesmo na vitória. Acho que nesse começo de carreira é comum cometermos erros, e estou tentando minimizá-los. Venci a luta e de maneira rápida, com pouco mais de um minuto, mas sei que cometi erros, e tenho que corrigi-los para assim manter uma evolução constante”, comentou.

“Eu achei que não entrei tão concentrado na luta, dei um chute baixo, não estava encontrando a distância, me movimentei bem, fintei, e tentei um mae geri (chute frontal do karatê) na barriga, onde acabei escorregando, e caindo, me levantei rápido e a luta continuou. Já estou trabalhando nos erros, na concentração, distância e outros erros”, completou.

Quanto ao futuro, a prioridade é continuar treinando e ajudando Vitor Belfort. “Agora é treinar, quero aprender mais, evoluir mais, cada vez me sentir mais à vontade, espero fazer uma luta no começo de setembro. O foco agora é a luta do Vitor, ele tem que estar 100% para essa próxima luta, mas estarei treinando e se não for atrapalhar o foco dele, acho que lutarei em setembro”, disse Durinho, que não abandonou as competições de Jiu-Jitsu.

“O Jiu-Jitsu não tem como eu abandonar, treino muito com e sem kimono, adoro, sou praticamente viciado, não tem como eu não treinar Jiu-Jitsu. Mas competir fica um pouco difícil. Espero ainda lutar esse ano, tem duas competições que gostaria muito de disputar, se eu estiver no Brasil. Uma delas é o Sul-Americano, que farei de tudo para lutar. Caso esteja no Estados Unidos, vou no Mundial Sem Kimono, que também é um torneio que gosto bastante. Ou um ou outro, eu irei lutar sim”, encerrou.

Jiu-Jitsu black belt Gilbert Durinho was unstoppable last Friday. In the cage at WOCS 20, the Gi and No-Gi Jiu-Jitsu world champion needed just two minutes to get the takedown, take back-control and finish Vinicius Bohrer with a rear-naked choke. The performance caught our readers’ attention, and they wrote in asking for the gi-clad warrior now carving out a name for himself in MMA to teach the takedown. “I repeated that takedown so much, it comes automatically to me now. The footwork is from judo; you have to take a step and turn your hip, getting the opponent to walk with you,” he explained just after the fight. He didn’t leave it at just theory, though, demonstrating the position exclusively for GRACIEMAG.com.

Durinho will again see MMA action this coming Saturday, when he takes on Paulo Nego Trama in the Brazilian state of Bahia.

O faixa-preta de Jiu-Jitsu Gilbert Durinho foi implacável na última sexta-feira. Pelo WOCS 20, o campeão mundial com e sem kimono só precisou de dois minutos para derrubar, pegar as costas e finalizar Vinicius Bohrer com um mata-leão. A performance do lutador chamou a atenção de nossos leitores, que pediram para o ás do kimono e agora do MMA ensinar a queda. “Já repeti tanto essa queda que ela sai no automático. O andar é do judô, tem que fazer uma passada e girar o quadril, usando o adversário, fazendo ele andar junto comigo”, explicou o boa praça, logo após o combate. Entretanto, ele não ficou só na teoria.

Com exclusividade ao GRACIEMAG.com, Gilbert Durinho mostrou a posição, enumerando três detalhes importantíssimos. Bem didático, ele ensina que na hora da pegada o cotovelo tem que ficar em cima da esgrima do adversário, depois a passada tem que ser na lateral e por fim a virada do quadril. O Jungle Fight 38 rola neste sábado, na Universidade Federal do Pará (UFPA), em Belém, e traz sete combates que prometem emoção. Num deles, o faixa-marrom de Jiu-Jitsu Leandro “Pìtbull” Hygo, uma de nossas apostas do MMA para 2012, (relembre aqui) encara o ídolo local Iliarde Santos.

“A expectativa é a melhor possível, venho treinando duro para essa luta. Vou enfrentar um lutador top da categoria 61kg e estava treinando na Pitbull Brother com o mestre Bruno Gouveia quando aconteceu aquele acidente e ele faleceu, que Deus o tenha. Nas últimas semanas treinei no Team Nogueira no Rio, a melhor equipe do Brasil e do mundo. Estou muito bem preparado”, disse ao GRACIEMAG.com.

Com nove vitórias e apenas uma derrota – para o pernambucano Marcos Vinícius no RFC 2 – Leandro tem um plano para desbancar o popular Iliarde.

“Minha estratégia é seguir de acordo para onde a luta for, treinei muito boxe, Jiu-Jitsu com parte de queda e treino físico voltado para o MMA, estou na ponta dos cascos. Tenho certeza de que vai ser mais uma vitória para o Rio Grande do Norte”, conta o casca-grossa, que aproveitou o espaço para deixar uma boa lição para você, que pratica Jiu-Jitsu.

“Gosto muito do triângulo, golpe que indico para o Jiu-Jitsu e MMA. Meu macete é dominar o braço e subir a perna contrária envolvendo o pescoço do adversário. Com o cadeado fechado, vou com as duas mãos no joelho e subo o quadril, é game-over”, ensina o mossoroense.

A bela Aracaju recebeu na última sexta-feira o Minotauro Fights 6, evento que homenageou o astro do UFC Rodrigo Nogueira. O baiano Minotauro prestigiou o torneio, que contou com bons duelos no ginásio Constâncio Vieira.

Na luta principal da noite, Edilberto Crocotá entrou na jaula sergipana disposto a se recuperar da derrota sofrida para André Chatuba no Bitetti Combat. E quem pagou a conta foi o local Bob Wrestler. O ex-UFC desceu a lenha e botou tanta pressão que o sergipano não voltou para a segunda etapa, desistindo do combate.

Outro que mandou bem foi Ednaldo Lula, que soltou o braço para cima de Nalzinho, vencendo por nocaute técnico no segundo giro.

Brazil’s picturesque city of Aracaju hosted Minotauro Fights 6 this Friday, paying tribute to UFC star Rodrigo “Minotauro” Nogueira. Nogueira was in attendance at the event that unfolded in Constâncio Vieira gymnasium.

In the evening’s main event, Edilberto Crocotá entered the cage looking to recover from his loss to André Chatuba at the last Bitetti Combat show. And the one he took it out on was local boy “Bob Wrestler.” The one-time UFC fighter laid it all out, putting the pressure on his woeful opponent, who didn’t return for the second round.

Another who had a stellar evening was Ednaldo Luca, who overcame Nalzinho by technical knockout in the second round.

Bitetti Combat 10 treated a packed house to some excellent fights this Saturday at Bogafogo club in Rio de Janeiro. One of the biggest standouts of the night, André Chatuba won the under-77kg (welterweight) GP by beating three opponents, while police officer Eduardo Herdy kicked off his MMA career on the right foot, with a knockout on his maiden outing. With a splendid knockout of his own, Ismael Marmota won the evening’s superfight.

Policeman Eduardo Herdy faced Fabio Native in a heavily-anticipated matchup. The fight started out with fast-paced standup. Herdy landed solid shots and dropped his opponent groggy to the canvas with a cross right on the button. Nativo did manage to get to his feet but was too dizzy to continue.

Next up was the opening round of the welterweight GP. In making it to the grand finale, André Chatuba first had to overcome a game Ivan Batman. The two-round fight had to go to a third round to determine the winner. Pushing the pace in the decisive round, Chatuba went through via unanimous decision. In his second of the night, the Team Nogueira representative came up against the seasoned Edilberto Crocotá, who went into the bout following an arm-triangle finish. André landed takedown after takedown, dominated the action on the ground, and again went through via unanimous decision – this time only needing the regulation two rounds.

At the other end of the bracket an undersized Julian Jabá took a split decision over Gerson Conceição and then a unanimous decision over Cesar Merenda. In the grand three-round finale, Jabá was more effective in the opening round, landing strikes and making it to back mount. In the second round, Chatuba took over, getting his game to click and landing more of his effective takedowns. In the third and final round, Jabá started out better in the standup department but Chatuba again got the takedown and followed up with his trademark move, the arm-triangle. Thus, Chatuba took the promotional welterweight belt.

In the superfight, Ismael Marmota made quick work of Alexandre Macaco. During an intense exchange of punches, Marmota landed a right cross that dropped his opponent unconscious to the ground.

Wrapping up the action, BTT’s Maurício Reis landed countless takedowns and dominated with ground and pound to beat Argentina’s Luciano Izzy. Also from Murilo Bustamante’s team, Danilo Pelezinho knocked out Elton Teixeira in the opening round.
