Director Dan Lewis just released the feature film Jiu-Jitsu vs. the World on youtube.

In 95 minutes, the documentary aims to explain the Jiu-Jitsu phenomenon as it continues to sweep the planet.

Lewis and his crew interviewed people like Renzo Gracie, Eddie Bravo, Roberto Cyborg, Kurt Osiander, Fabio Santos, the Valente Brothers, among many others, and they were able to paint a very clear picture of what the gentle art is all about.

Based on their comments, we listed 10 lessons people will learn about BJJ.

Leo Vieira at the 2013 ADCC

Leonardo Vieira is celebrating his 39th birthday this Monday, March 23.

Two-time ADCC champion and also a world champion, not to mention many other glories, the leader of Checkmat has definitely made a name for himself.

Protagonist of some of the most thrilling moments in grappling history, like the open class match up against Mark Kerr at the 2000 ADCC, Leozinho has a lot to be proud of.

We decided to bring back one of those moments from the 2003 ADCC, the -66kg semifinal against Eddie Bravo.

Remember that Bravo was a instant celebrity at that time after submitting Royler Gracie in the first round with a triangle.

Royler was then the sitting three-time champion of the division (1999-2000-2001).

After that year, Vieira went on to win the -66kg division again in 2005, finish second in 2007, reach the semifinals in 2009 (didn’t compete for the third place for health issues), finish second in 2011 (-77kg) and fourth in 2013 (-77kg).

The position aims to break the posture of an opponent and attack from there–a good way for MMA fighters to control an opponent and still be able to punch.

Marcelo’s technique makes sure to negate the possibility of getting caught in a triangle by positioning the arm to prevent the free leg of the opponent from closing. By standing up and placing your limbs in the right angle, you can shake off the rubber guard to escape.

O Metamoris Pro 3, realizado neste sábado 29 de março, recebeu diversas feras do Jiu-Jitsu numa disputa onde o objetivo era a finalização. Na luta principal, Royler Gracie, 48 anos, e Eddie Bravo, 43, fizeram a aguardada revanche do ADCC 2003, e levantaram a galera em Los Angeles, Califórnia.

Onze anos depois do notório triângulo de Eddie sobre Royler no ADCC São Paulo, os atletas fizeram um grande combate com raspagens, meia-guardas, legdrags e tentativas de finalizações plásticas, mas ninguém venceu. Depois de 20 minutos, Royler e Eddie empataram e ambos tiveram o braço erguido pelo juiz central da luta.

Ainda no evento, Rafael Mendes e Clark Gracie protagonizaram uma guerra. Rafa tentou inúmeras vezes pegar as costas do Gracie, que se defendeu bem. Nos minutos finais, Clark foi com tudo para atacar, mas o tempo acabou.

Houve duas vitórias por finalização no evento. Keenan Cornelius pegou o tornozelo de Kevin Casey, que cobriu Vinny Magalhães, afastado em cima da hora por obra de uma infecção. Já Guilherme Mendes usou o estrangulamento beisebol para pegar Samir Chantre.

Metamoris 3 took place this Saturday afternoon, in Los Angeles, California.

Four out of the six matches ended in draws, once no fighter was able to submit his opponent.

The main event was a thrilling battle between 43-year-old Eddie Bravo and 48-year-old Royler Gracie.

Initially, Royler played on top, trying to pass Eddie’s half guard, but soon Bravo put his technique called “Eletric chair” into action and inverted the position.

Royler was even deeper in trouble when Bravo got a neck crank in place and went for the submission.

Royler was brave and calm at the same time and worked to escape and come back on top again.

Both fighters came went from top to bottom several times in the 20 minutes of match but managed to resist each other attacks.

Near the end, while their legs were all tangled up, Eddie went for a calf slicer and Royler once again resisted bravely.

The fight ended with both fighters pleased with their performances.

“I’m 48 years old and I still fight and I did better that last time!” joked Royler, referring to the 2003 match, when Bravo tapped him with a triangle choke at the ADCC, in São Paulo, Brazil.

“He is so tough! No one resists the vaporizer like he did!”said Bravo, who went on to thank the crowd for the support.

Ralek Gracie came on the stage and asked the crowd if they wanted to see another match between the two.

The audience was unanimous, but both fighters said they would have to talk about it.

In the other five matches of the day, some good moments and two submissions.

Gi – Zak Maxwell vs. Sean Roberts (Draw)

Newcomers Sean Roberts and Zak Maxwell opened the card with exciting gi action.

Roberts started out better and almost got a choke on, but later in the match Zak was more active and almost finished the fight with an armbar.

Gi – Guilherme Mendes vs. Samir Chantre (Gui by baseball choke)

Gui put his gameplan to work from the beginning.

He swept Samir, worked the pass and went for the baseball choke.

Chantre defended well the first time, but had no choice but tapping at the second attempt.

The match was over in seven minutes.

No-Gi  – Dean Lister vs. Renato “Babalu” Sobral (draw)

The big guys on the card also did a great job in the 20 minutes they had to showcase their talents.

Now retired from MMA, Babalu had some trouble in the beginning with Lister’s famous ankle locks but was able to spin out of it.

On the last 10 minutes, Babalu managed to make the fight more even and also went from some nice submission attempts.

Lister seemed to be in trouble at least in one of the d’arce chokes Babalu set up during the match.

In the end, another draw and the recognition from the crowd.

No-Gi – Keenan Cornelius vs. Kevin Casey (Keenan by heel hook)

Vinny Magalhães was disqualified by the event’s doctor due to a serious case of staph infection.

With a 30-minute notice, MMA fighter and UFC veteran Kevin Casey stepped up to the chance of being part of the show.

Keenan Cornelius adapted quickly to the change of opponent and went for the win with a good guard game.

With a little over the half of the time gone, he went for a heel hook from the 50/50 guard to end the match and get the win.

The crowd applauded Cornelius for the win and Casey for the courage of fighting on an unbelievable short notice.

Gi – Rafael Mendes vs. Clark Gracie (draw)

Some 15lb lighter, Rafael Mendes relied completely on his technique to outsmart Clark Gracie.

He went right away to his berimbolo game and Clark was in trouble with less than 30s on the clock.

The Gracie was able to maintain his cool and defended the hooks and neck to stay in the match.

Rafael repeated the strategy a few times but was unable to get to where he wanted to go.

The match ended with no winner and Rafael clearly much more disappointed than Clark.

Metamoris 3 takes place this Saturday, March 29, in Los Angeles, CA.

The main attraction of the event’s third installment is the rematch between Royler Gracie and Eddie Bravo.

The two fought for the last time at the 2003 ADCC, in São Paulo, Brazil.

At that time, Bravo shocked the world when he caught Royler in a triangle to win the match valid for the -65kg round of 8.

Besides Gracie vs. Braco, Metamoris 3 will also feature a series of exciting matches:

Tetracampeão mundial de Jiu-Jitsu e tri no ADCC, Royler Gracie deixou as aulas de lado e voltou a treinar forte para uma competição. O técnico magrinho da família Gracie luta este sábado, 29 de março, a revanche com Eddie Bravo pelo Metamoris 3, em Los Angeles.

Na Califórnia, onde mora e ministra aulas, Royler, 48 anos, jamais deixou a preparação física de lado e por isso exibe uma forma de causar inveja. Para ir à forra contra o cara que o finalizou no ADCC 2003 num notório triângulo, Royler montou um camp com os alunos Johnny Faria, Fabricio Morango, Zak Maxwell, Regis Lebre e outros faixas-pretas da equipe.

“Royler está voando. Ele tem uma alimentação muito balanceada com frutas, legumes e peixes. É toda baseada na Dieta Gracie. Ele sempre teve uma vida regrada, de atleta e isso ajuda muito”, detalha Johnny Faria.

“O treinamento foi dividido em duas partes: de manhã e à noite, mais no horário da luta. Royler fez muito treino específico, drills de variadas posições, e rolou muito com a galera. Ele também faz preparação física três vezes por semana, muito treino funcional específico para a luta. Ele não se fixou em nada, está treinando um pouco de tudo para não ter surpresas e se sentir confortável em todas as situações na luta. O mestre não para!”.

Amigo próximo do Gracie, Johnny destrinchou como está a mente de Royler para a luta sem kimono.

“Ele está se sentindo pronto, o camp dele foi muito bom. Royler está forte, com muito gás e técnica afiada, sem falar na experiência que tem. Tudo isso junto dá muita confiança. Além disso, quando eles lutaram a primeira vez, Royler não conhecia Eddie Bravo. Agora ele conhece o jogo dele e vai ser uma luta totalmente diferente da primeira”, aposta o professor da Gracie Del Mar.
