Guybson Sá, a member of a traditional martial arts family in Brazil’s northeast, has been teaching in New York for a year and a half now.

The black belt is not taking on another endeavor, though: he’s promoting the inaugural Syracuse International Championship. The competition set for November 13 at Phoenyx High School in Syracuse, New York, will feature gi and no-gi competitions.

The divisions for the competition are beginners (white belts), intermediate (blue and purple), and advanced (brown and black belts). Medals and certificates will be awarded to the top three placed competitors.

Sign-ups end November 10 and cost $50, and can be performed on the www.active.com website.

As categorias serão divididas em iniciantes (faixas-brancas), intermediários (azuis e roxas) e avançados (marrons e pretas). Os três primeiros colocados serão premiados com medalhas e certificado do torneio.

Com duas vitórias em três lutas no MMA, Guybson Sá estará em ação neste sábado, nos Estados Unidos. O faixa-preta da família Sá, tradicional clã cearense da arte suave, encara o wrestler Mahnseah Boley pelo evento Raging Wolf  9.

O combate é válido pela categoria até 97 kg e será disputado em três rounds de cinco minutos. O casca-grossa, que dá aulas no East West Combat Club, vai ter adrenalina em dose dupla na mesma noite. Além de lutar, vai auxiliar o aluno Saldin Cummorovic, um bósnio de 19 anos, que estréia no mesmo evento.

There will be a GMA battle next May 28th.

Hermes Franca, of East West Combat Club, will be fighting Bill “The Grill” Cooper, BJJ black belt under GMA member Ricardo Miller, of Paragon BJJ.

The wrestling combat will take p;lace at the Grapplers Quest showcase at the UFC Fan Expo, in LAs Vegas, Nevada.

The dust has hardly settled from last weekend’s record-breaking Pan-American Championship and competitors are already gearing up for the next big international tourney on the Jiu-Jitsu calendar: the New York International Open Jiu-Jitsu Championship.

The NY Open returns May 1st to NY City College for the second time since its successful debut in 2009, and anyone wishing to participate and save better hurry, as the $102 discount rate ends at 11:59 pm this Friday. From this Saturday till the final deadline of April 24 at 11:59pm, the full $ 117.00 rate applies.

New York and its surrounding area being the hotbed for Jiu-Jitsu that it is, with Renzo Gracie Academy – last year’s winning team –, Ricardo Almeida Academy, East West Combat Club and Alliance strong in the region, there will be no shortage of local talent vying for top spot on the winners’ stand.

Although the athlete list is not yet available, several big names from the competition Jiu-Jitsu scene are likely to be there. With half of Alliance’s winning duo, Lucas Lepri, teaching in New York, it is more than likely the eternal finalist will be there for a repeat his jaw-dropping feat from last year, when he won not only his customary lightweight division, but the absolute, as well.

Sparks are also bound to fly in the super heavyweight division, with East West Combat Club’s Guybson Sa living in the city. And look for a riveting featherweight group, too, as this year’s Pan-American featherweight finalist Marcelino Freitas guarantees he’ll be there, as he is in Manhattan teaching at the academy of three-time Jiu-Jitsu world champion and former Shooto and Cage Rage champion Vitor “Shaolin” Ribeiro.

A faixa-marrom Hillary Williams faz tudo para se manter ocupada. Não bastasse as aulas na academia Westside JJ, a lutadora de 21 anos prepara-se para o aulão inaugural com Pablo Popovitch na academia de Hermes França, no Oregon, e para o Pan, em Irvine, entre outras aventuras.

Deixemos que ela mesmo conte, nestas 4 perguntas do GRACIEMAG.com:

Como foi sua participação no torneio de Jiu-Jitsu do Arnold’s, o grandioso evento do governador Schwarzenegger em Columbus, Ohio?
Foi no fim de semana agora, eu entrei no torneio sem kimono e venci minhas duas lutas com certa facilidade. Na faixa-marrom de kimono, porém, não havia competidoras, então me inscrevi no masculino mesmo. Perdi de 4 a 0, mas fui espancada (“took a beating”)!

Eita. Como foi isso?
Lutei com este faixa-marrom de Michigan, esqueci o nome dele. Ele é bom, e venceu mesmo na técnica. No fim eu agradeci a ele só por ter lutado comigo, afinal provou ter peito de entrar numa luta em que só perderia com isso. Quanto a mim, estava lá para aprender mais um pouco. Eu teria ido contra Roger Gracie se ele fosse o único competidor lá (risos).

E sábado agora? Como estão os preparativos para o seminário na East West Combat Club, nova academia do Hermes em Portland? (Veja mais aqui)
Poxa, tô animada mas tô nervosa! Eu já estaria empolgada só de participar de um seminário com Pablo Popovitch e Hermes França, né. Ensinar junto com os dois então é uma honra. Já planejei o que quero ensinar, espero mostrar aos alunos técnicas de Jiu-Jitsu sob a perspectiva de uma pessoa menor e mais leve. Eu não faço golpes extravagantes com nomes engraçados, você sabe, mas o básico que uso eu sei fazer bem, e são esses pequenos detalhes das posições que gostaria de mostrar. Eu realmente amo ensinar Jiu-Jitsu, então estou amarradona para que chegue o fim de semana.

E os preparativos para o Pan, tudo certo?

Claro, não posso perder este Pan! Estou fazendo minha preparação muito forte, sei que para ganhar das meninas tenho que ser aquela com a melhor técnica, o maior gás e na melhor forma. Um erro pequeno é só o que você precisa para perder para elas. Ah, e depois do Pan, vou ao Rio de novo, em maio. Comprei a passagem ontem e tô superfeliz!

Brown belt Hillary Williams does all she can to keep busy. Class at Westside JJ Academy is not enough for the 21-year-old fighter and she, along with Pablo Popovitch, now prepares to teach the inaugural class at Hermes França’s new academy in Oregon, and the Pan in Irvine, among other adventures.

We’ll let her tell it, in these 4 questions from GRACIEMAG.com:

How did your participation in the Arnold’s Jiu-Jitsu tournament, the grand event of Governor Schwarzenegger in Columbus, Ohio, go?
It was this weekend, I entered the no-gi tournament and won my two matches with relative ease. At brown belt in the gi, however, there were no competitors, so I signed up for the male one. I lost 4 to 0 but took a beating!

Jeez. How was that?
I fought this brown belt from Michigan, I forget his name. He’s good, and won using technique. In the end I thanked him just for having fought me, after all he had guts doing a match he had nothing to gain from. As for me, I was there to learn some more. I would have gone against Roger Gracie if he were the only competitor there (laughs).

And how about for next Saturday? How are your preparations for the seminar at East West Combat Club, Hermes’s gym in Portland, going? (See more here)
I’m excited but nervous! I’d be thrilled just to participate in a seminar with Pablo Popovitch and Hermes Franca, you know. So teaching with the two of them is an honor. I already planned what I’ll teach, and I hope to show the students Jiu-Jitsu techniques from the perspective of a smaller and lighter person. I don’t do fancy moves with funny names, you know, but the basics that I know, I do well, and it’s these finer details in positions that I’d like to show. I really love teaching Jiu-Jitsu, so I’m stoked to be there next weekend.

And how are your preparations for the Pan going, alright?

Of course, I can’t miss this Pan! I’m doing lots of prep work. I know that to beat these girls I have to have the best technique, the most gas and be in better shape. A tiny mistake is all it takes to lose to them. Oh, and after the Pan, I go to Rio again in May. I bought my ticket yesterday and I’m overjoyed!

After confirming his retirement from the rings and cages of MMA to GRACIEMAG.com, Hermes Franca, who spent years fighting in the UFC octagon, is now dedicated to the job of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu coach.

Hermes now has three East West Combat Club branches in New York and, as he previously announced, he will inaugurate another one on March 13, but in Portland, Oregon. The big news this time is that he will hold a super seminar on inauguration day, free to all interested parties.

“Next week I inaugurate the academy in Portland. I’ll hold a free seminar with Pablo Popovitch and Hillary Williams,” said the black belt.

Depois de ter confirmado a aposentadoria dos ringues e cages ao GRACIEMAG.com numa matéria exclusiva (ver aqui), Hermes França, que brilhou por anos no octagon do UFC, se dedica ao trabalho como treinador de Jiu-Jitsu. 

Hermes hoje conta com três filiais da East West Combat Club em Nova York e, como já tinha avisado, inaugura no dia 13 de março outra academia, só que em Portland, no Oregon. A novidade será um super seminário na aula inaugural, com acesso livre aos interessados.

The grand opening is scheduled March 13th and it will feature some very special seminars. GMA Pablo Popovitch (2009 ADCC champion), Jiu-Jitsu bombshell Hillary Willians (2009 No-Gi world champion) and Hermes himself will be teaching classes.

No dia 9 de janeiro, sites de todo o mundo davam conta da aposentadoria de Hermes França. O faixa-preta de Jiu-Jitsu é o brasileiro que conseguiu ir mais longe entre os leves no UFC, tendo disputado o cinturão da categoria em 2007, contra Sean Sherk. Na ocasião, acabou derrotado por decisão dos jurados. Numa entrevista exclusiva ao GRACIEMAG.com, o nosso GMA Hermes comenta a decisão de pendurar as luvas e analisa a carreira.

Foi noticiada a sua aposentadoria, mas você pouco falou sobre o assunto. Afinal, por que parou?

Pois é, parei cara. Estava muito difícil me concentrar para lutar. È preciso estar focado 100% no treinamento e eu estava dando aulas e trabalhando com a minha academia de Jiu-Jitsu. Estava difícil, aí falei: ‘quer saber de uma coisa, vou parar’. E foi o que fiz. Não deixei de lado as coisas que gosto, que é dar aulas e treinar os atletas. Estou dando muita aula de Jiu-Jitsu e a vida continua. Só parei mesmo de lutar.

Mas não faria nem uma luta de despedida?

Não. Já fiz o que era para ser feito.

Qual luta mais te marcou?

Todas as lutas marcaram. Lembro que cheguei nos Estados Unidos sem nada, tendo que trabalhar. Acabei tendo a oportunidade de lutar no Ultimate depois e disputei o título. Acho que toda luta tem seu papel. É lógico que a primeira no UFC (vitória contra Rich Crunkilton, no UFC 42) a gente nunca esquece! Foi só felicidade.

E qual foi o adversário mais marcante?

O Marcus Aurélio me marcou, porque foi meu professor da faixa-azul até a marrom. Ficou um negócio meio chato e essa também foi uma luta marcante.

O que fará agora que não luta mais MMA?

Estou com uma academia no Oregon e a abertura será no dia 13 de março. Vou fazer um seminário legal e também é muito bacana o fato de muita gente que mora por aqui estar amarradão. O Matt Lindland já falou comigo e o Chael Sonnen também está por aqui. O Fabiano “Pega Leve’, que é um amigão, também, então está tudo em casa. Estou só com gente boa.

Mas você vai ser treinador de MMA?

Agora só de Jiu-Jitsu. Já estamos com três academias e, em Nova York (East West Combat Club), com apenas quatro meses, já contamos com 60 alunos. Não posso esquecer o Jiu-Jitsu. O MMA é difícil de ensinar, é problema, muita dor de cabeça ensinar ao atleta. O Jiu-Jitsu é emocionante e é um esporte que nunca vai acabar. O Guybson Sá, uma pedreira de 21 anos lá de Fortaleza, está aqui comigo também me ajudando.

No MMA você disse que não luta. Mas na arte suave, luta?

Com certeza! O pano é a minha segunda pele. Pretendo lutar o Pan-Americano, agora em abril. Lutei os dois últimos Mundiais sem kimono e ganhei medalha no passado. Gosto da competição e isso me faz continuar em forma. Em campeonato de Jiu-Jitsu e submission, estarei dentro.

Gostaria de dar algum recado?

Quero agradecer a todos os fãs. Gostaria de pedir para quem está na batalha que não desista do esporte, nunca desista. Para mim nada foi fácil. Comecei nos EUA lavando carros e ganhando US$200 por semana. Para chegar, tive de lutar. E isso serve em qualquer segmento. Peço a todos que nunca desistam do sonho.
