Eleita a luta da noite no UFC 166, a batalha travada por Gilbert Melendez e Diego Sanchez foi digna de ovação geral após o evento em Houston, Texas, Estados Unidos. Num evento de grandes lutas como Velasquez x Cigano e Cormier x Roy Nelson, apenas um duelo tão aberto e franco poderia roubar a noite de tal maneira.

O duelo, dominado por Melendez nos primeiros dois assaltos, quase foi interrompido por conta de um grande corte que Diego sofreu na testa. Mas o médico liberou, e a batalha teve uma reviravolta quando Sanchez conseguiu encaixar um lindo upper no terceiro round, levando Gilbert a um knockdown.

Após o grande embate entre ex-companheiros de treino, Diego, que chamou o ex-colega para briga a luta toda, enviou uma mensagem respeitosa para Melendez via Twitter:

“Foi divertido ir para a guerra com você. Você sabe onde encontrar o Pettis ou o Josh e vai ficar com esse cinturão. No meu caso, vou fazer minha escalada no peso leve, e sei que faremos uma ‘Segunda Guerra Mundial’, agora em cinco rounds”, postou Sanchez.

A próxima parada de Melendez, de fato, deve ser contra o vencedor de Anthony Pettis x Josh Thomson, que se encaram valendo a cinta peso leve no dia 14 de dezembro.

“Eu já venci o Josh Thomson duas vezes na carreira, sei que mereço disputar esse cinturão de novo”, disse Gilbert, que perdeu em decisão parelha para Ben Henderson, no UFC do último dia 20 de abril.

UFC lightweight fighter Diego Sanchez is a well-rounded mixed martial artist. Now he can beef up his résumé with a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu black belt.

Sanchez was awarded his black belt by GMA Roberto Tussa of Gracie Barra New Mexico on Monday. The fighter tweeted out a picture with his professor to show off his new belt.

Sanchez currently has a fight lined up with Gilbert Melendez at UFC 166. This will be his first fight with his new black belt.

All fighters participating in UFC on Fuel TV 8 weighed in on Saturday in Japan, making the fights official for the Sunday night event.

Main event fighters Wanderlei Silva and Brian Stann tipped the scale, giving their featured bout the green light to headline the card. Silva weighed in at 204 pounds, while Stann hit the 206-pound mark.

For the co-main event, Mark Hunt came in at the heavyweight limit of 266 pounds, and his opponent, Stefan Struve, made weight at 260 pounds.

Main card fighter Diego Sanchez missed weight, coming in at 158 pounds, two pounds above his lightweight limit. He was unable to cut the weight during the one hour of additional time after his initial weigh-in, so he will be forced to pay a penalty equaling 20 percent of his fight purse. The 20 percent penalty will be paid to his opponent, Takanori Gomi.

The 11 fights on the the March 3 card for UFC on Fuel TV 8 in Japan are in place..

The first five match-ups will be broadcast on the promotion’s Facebook page. The main event at the Saitama Super Arena will pit Wanderlei Silva against Brian Stann, and the co-main event has the squat Mark Hunt facing the rangy Stefan Struve. Another attention-grabbing fight is the middleweight tilt between Hector Lombard and Yushin Okami.

There will also be a clash of savvy grapplers in Jiu-Jitsu black belt Marcelo “Magrão” Guimarães (8w, 1d) against Hyun Gyu Lim. Then there’ll be fourth-degree black belt Cristiano Marcello, onetime coach to Wand at Chute Boxe, taking on UFC first-timer Kazuki Tokudome.

Cristiano, who has fought in Japan in the past, starred in season 15 of The Ultimate Fighter reality who, where he lost to San Sicilia by knockout in the second round.

Cristiano Marcello is also famous for a memorable behind-the-scenes video taken backstage at Pride FC. Following an argument between Wanderlei Silva and Charles “Krazy Horse” Bennet in the dressing room, Cristiano, who was translating what Wand was saying, became the target of the aggressor, who didn’t come out too well against the Brazilian’s Jiu-Jitsu.

Já estão definidas as 11 lutas do UFC on Fuel TV 8, o UFC Japão, no próximo dia 3 de março.

As cinco primeiras lutas serão exibidas na íntegra pelo Facebook da organização. O evento principal da noite na clássica Saitama Super Arena será a batalha entre o ídolo Wanderlei Silva e Brian Stann, e no coevento principal, Mark Hunt terá pela frente o comprido Stefan Struve. Destaque também para o duelo na categoria dos médios entre Hector Lombard e Yushin Okami.

O card ainda apresenta o faixa-preta de Jiu-Jitsu Marcelo “Magrão” Guimarães (8v, 1e) contra Hyun Gyu Lim, e outro bom finalizador. Cristiano Marcello, faixa-preta quarto grau de Jiu-Jitsu e ex-treinador de Wand na Chute Boxe, enfrenta Kazuki Tokudome, novato no UFC.

Cristiano, que já lutou no Japão, chegou a brilhar no reality show “TUF 15”, no qual perdeu a final para Sam Sicilia, por nocaute, no segundo assalto.

Além disso, Cristiano Marcello ficou famoso por protagonizar uma cena memorável nos bastidores do Pride. Após uma breve discussão entre Wanderlei Silva e Charles “Krazy Horse” Bennet nos vestiários, Cristiano, que traduzia o que Wand dizia, foi alvo do agressor, que não se saiu muito bem contra o Jiu-Jitsu afiado do carioca.

A organização do maior evento de MMA do mundo confirmou, nesta terça-feira, mais um embate para a próxima edição do UFC on Fuel:  Yushin Okami enfrenta o nocauteador Hector Lombard no card principal da oitava edição do evento, que ocorre dia 2 de março, no Saitama Super Arena, no Japão.

Okami, um dos mais promissores japoneses do UFC, ficou conhecido após lutar contra Anderson Silva pelo cinturão dos pesos médios. Yushin, que tem 28 vitórias e sete derrotas na sua carreira, vem de duas vitórias seguidas no UFC, sendo a sua última sobre Alan Belcher, no UFC 155.

Hector Lombard tem 32 vitórias e 3 derrotas, e vem de nocaute sobre Rousimar Toquinho , ainda no primeiro assalto, no UFC on FX 6. Lombard, apesar de ser oriundo do judô, tem 18 nocautes anotados no seu cartel.

O UFC on Fuel 8, ou UFC Japão, terá na luta principal o brasileiro Wanderlei Silva enfrentando Brian Stann, além de Mark Hunt contra Stefan Struve e Takanori Gomes pegando Diego Sanchez.

Yushin Okami will square off with knockout-savvy Olympic judoka Hector Lombard at March 3’s UFC on on FUEL 8 in Japan, the UFC announced on Tuesday.

Okami (29-7), one of the UFC’s great Japanese hopes, is riding the wake of back-to-back wins, the latest being over Alan Belcher at UFC 155.

Lombard (32-3-1) most recently knocked out Rousimar Palhares in the first round at UFC on FX 6. Though Lombard comes from a judo background, the 18 knockouts on his record are testament to his having some serious fistic skills as well.

The UFC on Fuel 8, or UFC Japan, headliner has Wanderlei Silva taking on Brian Stann in a catchweight bout. Additionally, a heavyweight tilt pitting Mark Hunt against Stefan Struve and a lightweight one between Takanori Gomes and Diego Sanchez are also featured on the card.

Ronny Markes made his UFC debut beating Karlos Vermola by unanimous decision last August. Whereas that time Markes fought at light heavyweight, this time he will be doing battle at middleweight, when he takes on the tough Aaron Simpson on February 15 in Omaha, Nebraska, USA, at UFC on Fuel TV 1. While the Jair Lourenço black belt and Nova União rep Markes carries a five-fight win streak into the match, Simpson has won his last three.

Jiu-Jitsu will also be on display in other fights on the night. In the main event, Diego Sanchez takes on Jake Ellenberger. Another black belt to take to the cage at the event is Rani Yahya, who lost to Chad Mendes at UFC 133, who will test his mettle against TUF 12 winner Jonathan Brookins.
