O atleta do Corinthians, aluno de Ramon Lemos e André Galvão, finalizou Alex Silva no katagatame a 1min21s do primeiro assalto, no 1º Balada Combate Night, em Mogi Mirim, São Paulo. Confira sua atuação:

In 2011, Andre Galvao set out for a chance to win an ADCC title. Through struggles via immigration issues, minimal resources and other barriers, he was able to not only get to the UK but he won the whole event.

Read up on Galvao’s own words as to what he went through to become the 2011 ADCC champion:

It is already past but it’s good to remember this day. God gave me those titles and I really thank Him for that. Of course I worked hard for it. But He gave me power and health and energy to be every single day on the mat working hard. Also God got a lot of people like my wife, students, friends and family to help me reach my dream. My school was so little, I had to train, answer the phone calls, teach the kids, help the adults, talk with people, clean the gym and set up the waivers for the visitors, and train hard, I said: hard. I was doing it every single day. My academy had no wall protections, the mat space was so little, and only one bathroom. I thank my first students so much for the help, also Bruno Frazatto, Davi Ramos, Denilson Bischiliari and Ronaldo Candido. They were the only ones from Brazil with me in that journey. I really was training without knowing if I would be there because I was in my greencard process and I didn’t have my travel permission with me, but in about 3 weeks before the ADCC 2011 I got it. The U.S. immigration government sent me that. Thanks God!!! And not just that, also I got deported from UK in 2009. They didn’t let me get in and sent me back to Brazil at that time. I remember sometimes during the sessions I was training so hard and sweating so much but inside my mind I was thinking: “Why am I doing all this? They will never let me in there again or maybe I can’t even go there” but I believe God just didn’t let me stop and I just canceled those thoughts in my mind and kept going almost crying. When I was in the plane ready to arrive in UK I just thought: “OMG I will be kicked out of this place again, what am I doing here” but no. As soon as I got there I had a kind of hard time to get in but they got me in for just 4 days permission and the day back home was my birthday September 29th. I can’t forget it ever. So as soon as I got my bags I said: “I wanna fight so hard now. I wanna win it.” Then I got back home with 2 trophies and the award of best fighter and best fight (vs. Palhares). My students were all waiting for me in a big party  inside our academy. I just cried and gave thanks to My Lord! If you don’t believe God exist, I do!!! I don’t need to say anything. This is the resume of my 2011 ADCC championship. “When you are loyal , God is Loyal and whatever I do I will do for Him. Because He is my power and my strength” I know I may never have a moment like that again. This is just one of my great experiences with Jesus. Rm 11:36

Dia 13 de abril, Davi Ramos entra em ação no MMA pela segunda vez, pelo evento Max Sports, contra o adversário Rubens Castro. A luta será no ginásio do Corinthians, em São Paulo. O faixa-preta do professor Casquinha fez toda sua preparação no CT do Corinthians, ao lado do treinador Ramos Lemos.

Em papo com o GracieMag.com, Davi comentou os treinos, sobre confiança e o que aprendeu na transição para o MMA. Confira.

GracieMag: Como está sua preparação para sua segunda luta de MMA na carreira, Davi?

DAVI RAMOS: Os treinos estão indo muito bem, o Ramon (Lemos) é um excelente professor. Não é à toa que os melhores do MMA mundial estão com ele, como Anderson Silva e Junior Cigano. Estou afiando a minha parte em pé desde outubro e venho melhorando a cada dia, graças ao professor Washington Silva. Ele já lutou boxe em duas Olimpíadas, e tem muito a ensinar.

Com quem você tem treinado no Corinthians?

Na parte em pé quem vem me ajudando são os lutadores de muay thai Alex Canguru, Dedé e o Misael Silva, caras com uma boa experiência no MMA. Eles estão sendo essenciais. Estou me sentindo mais bem preparado a cada treino.

O que você prepara para o combate contra o Rubens Castro?

Meu adversário também vem do Jiu-Jitsu, porém sei pouco sobre ele. Hoje em dia, para lutar MMA profissional não dá para ser bobo em modalidade alguma, tem de estar preparado para tudo. O pessoal pode esperar o de sempre, não mudei meu jogo em nada. Sou um lutador que luto para frente em qualquer modalidade, então podem esperar um bom show do Davi Ramos. Estou me sentindo bem para manter a luta em pé, espero estar preparado logo para trocar com qualquer um nessa categoria.

O que você aprendeu nessa transição do pano para as luvas?

É tudo diferente. Aprendi que é necessário o atleta ser completo, e o treino é dureza. Em compensação, no Jiu-Jitsu lutamos com cinco tipos de atletas distintos. Já no MMA, a estratégia é para uma pessoa só. O lance é estar preparado em todos os sentidos, pois o oponente vai vir pronto para te atacar de tudo que é lado.

Tem treinado de kimono?

Sim, o treino de kimono é obrigatório aqui na Atos/Corinthians, todo dia tem. Quando a luta se aproxima vamos tirando o pano para dar mais ajuste em outros aspectos. O Ary Farias, Denílson Bischiliari e o Ronaldo Candido estão me ajudando a afiar o chão para esta luta.

Depois de abril, qual é o próximo passo?

Após este evento, eu me junto com toda equipe Atos, em San Diego, junto com André Galvão. Teremos lá nosso camp para o Mundial, na Califórnia, no fim de maio. Nos últimos anos eu estava bem lesionado, não estava 100%, mas aqui no Corinthians estou usando toda estrutura do clube e vou chegar muito bem neste Mundial! Agradeço aos leitores e à equipe GracieMag, espero que curtam esta posição que mandei!

The black belt failed to restrain his opposition to a penalty incurred by his student Denilson in the purple belt featherweight contest at the Worlds, and in an act of thoughtlessness jumped the divider to express his grievances directly to the referee in the match area. His actions earned him automatic penalization from the IBJJF, preventing Galvão from competing at the most important Jiu-Jitsu championship of the year, which ended last Sunday. Still regretting it, and after a couple of sleepless nights and even shed tears, André spoke with GRACIEMAG.com.

WHAT HAPPENED ON FRIDAY, AND WHAT LESSONS DID YOU DERIVE FROM IT?

Man, I got punished. Everyone knows that. I couldn’t control my emotions when I saw a student of mine treated unfairly during a purple belt final at the Worlds. I know a lot of folks are criticizing me for it, for sure. I’m aware of having made a mistake. I shouldn’t have gone past the security barricade to argue with the ref. And in the end, I paid a high price for it.

I was in perfect condition to take top spot on the podium this year. Not to discredit the winners at weight and absolute, but I was training with a “capital T.” Everyone who saw the work I put in knows full well what I’m talking about. But unfortunately it wouldn’t be this time around. It hurt a lot to be left out.

WHAT WAS IT LIKE WATCHING EVERYTHING THAT WENT ON AT THE 2012 WORLDS FROM THE STANDS?

I even cried about it, if you want to know. It was worse than defeat. Human beings sometimes learn from their mistakes. And that’s how I’m learning. I haven’t slept right since. May it serve as a lesson not just to me, but to everyone.

I’ve received a lot of messages from fans and people who like me. That’s been helping me a lot at this time. I’d like to thank everyone: Thank you for the messages, guys. I don’t want to come off badly, but from the outside I felt my division [medium heavyweight] didn’t have that special shine the other divisions did. Between us, it was extremely boring. But I’d like to extend my congratulations to all the champions. Especially to Bochecha, who did awesome!

ARE YOU THINKING ABOUT COMING BACK STRONGER IN 2013 THEN?

Yes, for sure. I already apologized to the IBJJF more than five times, and I’m asking forgiveness again here. I know I made a mistake, and that’s what I regret. When you know you did something wrong you don’t, by any means, want to do it again. I’ve grown as an athlete with what happened, but much more as a teacher.

I’m more than regretful, to tell you the truth, since I fight for a living—that says it all. I’d like to also say sorry to my sponsors, Storm Kimonos, Twinlab Fuel and Zebra Mats, for what happened. Now of course it’s over, but I think the only way to really get over it is by winning the 2013 Worlds, at weight and open weight.

FROM THE SIDELINES, DID YOU NOTICE ANYTHING IN PARTICULAR?

I feel that in terms of the rules everything is fine. It’s clear how much our art is growing with every year. The Worlds is really well run, but there’s just one thing missing, in my opinion: If the IBJJF can pull it off next year, there should always be three referees for each match area. The thing is that Jiu-Jitsu is really complex. There are lots of positions, lots of tangling up, grips here and there. It’s a lot for one referee to oversee alone, especially with the Jiu-Jitsu of today. A lot of refs can’t always accompany the pace of the matches, and they get lost with this tangle game.

I also feel there should be a refereeing school, and the referees should earn a wage for the work they do. A preparatory course for them, having a trade school, would be interesting and a good thing. I feel that would make a big difference, help them make decisions when they need to.

DID YOU OR DIDN’T YOU LIKE WHAT YOU SAW AT THE LONG BEACH PYRAMID?

Look, like I said, I feel the rules are almost perfect. But some changes could be made when the athletes land in 50/50 guard. There, the athletes should have 30 seconds with which to work. If they can’t do anything, get anything to develop out of it, the refs should stop the match and stand them up. If you look closely, almost every black belt final ended up in this situation. It’s horrible to watch, to corner or even to referee matches like that. The 50/50 guard should only be allowed for 30 seconds, going back to the feet when nothing happens. If folks agree with that, the rule could be extended even further, awarding penalties and even disqualification to the fighter who persists with the position, who resorts to it without developing anything. The same as they do for stalling.

It’s that there’s no point to it, the 50/50 most of the time is used to defend and to stall, not to attack. Watching matches like that is ridiculous. Why would a TV station want to broadcast two guys locked up like dogs for ten minutes? It doesn’t go over well.

O ato rendeu uma punição automática da IBJJF, impedindo Galvão de lutar este ano a competição mais importante do Jiu-Jitsu competitivo, que terminou no domingo. Ainda arrependido, e depois de noites insones e até lágrimas, André conversou com o GRACIEMAG.com.

O que ocorreu na sexta-feira, e qual a lição que fica?

Cara, eu fui punido. Isso todo mundo já sabe. Eu não pude controlar minhas emoções ao ver um aluno meu sendo injustiçado numa final de Mundial, na faixa-roxa. Sei que muitos vão me criticar por isso, certamente. Eu sei que foi um erro o que fiz. Não deveria ter passado da faixa de segurança para argumentar com o árbitro. E, no fim, acabei pagando um preço muito alto por isso.

Eu tinha total condições de estar no lugar mais alto do pódio este ano, sem desmerecer os campeões do peso e do absoluto. Mas eu estava treinado “com T maiúsculo”. Quem viu o trabalho que eu fiz sabe muito bem do que estou falando. Mas infelizmente não foi dessa vez, doeu muito ficar do lado de fora.

Como foi ver todos os lances do Mundial 2012 da arquibancada?

Eu até já chorei por isso, se você quer saber. Foi pior do que uma derrota. E o ser humano às vezes aprende com os próprios erros. E eu estou aprendendo assim. Não consigo dormir direito até hoje. Que isso sirva de lição não só para mim, mas para todos.

Tenho recebido muitas mensagens de fãs e pessoas que gostam de mim. Isso está me ajudando muito nesse momento. Gostaria de agradecer a todos, obrigado pelas mensagens, galera. Não quero soar mal, mas de fora senti que minha categoria (o meio-pesado) não teve o brilho especial, como as outras categorias. Foi extremamente sem graça, cá entre nós. Mas gostaria de reforçar os meus parabéns a todos os campeões. Em especial ao Bochecha que mandou bem demais!

Pensa em voltar mais forte em 2013, então?

Sim, certamente. Já pedi desculpas mais de cinco vezes para a IBJJF e peço mais uma vez aqui. Sei que cometi um erro e o arrependimento é esse. Quando você sabe que errou e não quer mais fazer aquilo de jeito nenhum. Tenho crescido como atleta, mas muito mais como professor com o que houve.

Estou mais do que arrependido, na verdade, pois eu luto para viver, isso fala tudo. Gostaria de pedir desculpas também aos meus patrocinadores Storm Kimonos, Twinlab Fuel e Zebra Mats por tudo o que ocorreu. Agora claro que já passou, mas acho que para eu engolir isso só vencendo o Mundial 2013, no peso e absoluto.

De fora, deu para analisar alguma coisa?

Acho que em termos de regras está tudo legal. É nítido o crescimento da nossa arte a cada ano. O Mundial é muito bem organizado, só falta um detalhe, ao meu ver. Se a IBJJF tiver condições ano que vem, deveria haver sempre três árbitros em cada área de luta. O caso é que o Jiu-Jitsu é muito complexo. Tem muita posição, muita embolação, pegada aqui e ali. É muita coisa para um árbitro apenas ver sozinho, principalmente no Jiu-Jitsu de hoje. Muitos árbitros que estão ali por vezes não conseguem acompanhar o ritmo das lutas, e ficam totalmente perdidos com esse tipo de jogo de embolação.

Acho também que deveria ter uma escola de árbitros e eles deveriam receber salário para exercer a profissão. Um curso preparatório para eles, ter uma escola de formação, seria bem interessante e muito bom. Acho que isso iria fazer a diferença, ajudá-los a tomar a decisão ali na hora H.

Gostou ou não de algo a que assistiu na Pirâmide em Long Beach?

Olha, como eu disse acho que a regra está quase perfeita. Mas poderia mudar na hora que os atletas caíssem na guarda 50/50. Ali, os atletas de repente poderiam ter 30 segundos pra trabalhar. Se não conseguissem fazer nada, desenvolver, os árbitros poderiam parar a luta e voltar em pé. Se você reparar, quase todas as finais de faixa-preta caíram nessa situação. Fica horrível de assistir, ficar de córner e mesmo arbitrar lutas assim. A guarda 50/50 poderia ser usada por 30 segundos, voltando em pé após não acontecer nada. Se o pessoal concordasse, a regra poderia ir até mais longe, conferindo punições e até a desclassificação para o lutador que forçasse a posição, que se colocasse nela sem desenvolver. Assim como é feito para quem amarra.

É que não adianta, a 50/50 é na maioria das vezes usada para defesa e para amarrar, não para atacar. Aí fica ridículo de ver lutas assim. Como uma emissora de TV vai passar uma luta de dois caras atracados como cachorros por dez minutos? Não fica bem.

The prospects and latest standouts to join the scene GRACIEMAG.com tipped to make waves in 2011 (refresh you memory here) are getting set for the biggest test of the season: the Jiu-Jitsu World Championship about to get underway this Thursday in Long Beach, California.

“I’m well trained and I’ve got my head in an excellent place. I hope it all works out. I want to thank everyone for the encouragement I’ve been getting; I hope to pay you all back at the championship!” brown belt João Gabriel said over Facebook just before embarking on his flight to Los Angeles.

João is one of the many who have lived up to the predictions posted on this website. In May, the Soul Fighters whiz won weight and absolute at the Brazilian Nationals. There are, however, a number of other star-material prospects who’ve been on a tear, and they’ll be at the pyramid, too.

Nova União rep Marcio André is also on his way to California, as is Atos’s Denílson Bishiliari, who is now a purple belt. From the USA, Christian Broadnax and Mackenzie Dern will add further spice to the mix. At brown belt, Michel Langhi is yet another we put our chips on, as is black belt Antonio Carlos “Cara de Sapato”, who will have his work cut out for him in the heavyweight division.

Add to them promising up-and-comers like dynamic purple belt duo Paulo and João Mayao… In a nutshell, the 2011 Worlds promises fireworks at every belt level. And the time to prove who’s here to stay is now.

Apontados pelo GRACIEMAG.com como candidatos a novos destaques em 2011 (lembre aqui), as feras já se preparam para o grande teste da temporada, o Mundial de Jiu-Jitsu, que tem início nesta quinta-feira, em Long Beach, Califórnia.
“Estou muito bem treinado e a cabeça está ótima. Tomara que de tudo certo . Obrigado a todos pelo treinamento e pela moral, espero poder retribuir isso a vocês lá no campeonato!”, postou no Facebook o faixa-marrom João Gabriel, pouco antes de embarcar para Los Angeles.

João é um dos tantos que confirmam nesta temporada as apostas deste site. Em maio, a fera da Soul Fighters venceu peso e absoluto no Brasileiro de Jiu-Jitsu. No entanto, outros candidatos a ídolo, que vêm fazendo bonito, estarão em ação na Pirâmide.

A fera da Nova União Marcio André também já embarcou e Denílson Bischiliari, da Atos, também está confirmado, agora na faixa-roxa. Pelos Estados Unidos Christian Broadnax e Mackenzie Dern engrossam o caldo. Na faixa-marrom, Michel Langhi também foi uma das nossas apostas, assim como o faixa-preta Antonio Carlos “Cara de Sapato”, que vai ter vida dura entre os pesos pesados.

Junte aí outros novos talentos como a dupla da faixa-roxa Paulo e João Mayao… Enfim, o Mundial 2011 promete emoção em todas as graduações. E essa é a hora de provar quem veio para ficar.

The stars of team Atos are hard at it in Rio Claro, São Paulo, and there’s no pointing out a firm favorite to be the biggest star from the outfit at the 2011 Worlds. Rafael and Gui Mendes, André Galvão, Ary Farias, Bruno Frazatto, Gilbert Durinho, Guto Campos and others are all in tip-top shape and California-bound to take on what promises to be a electrifying championship, but there are other soldiers from their ranks, too.

The team’s high command is already pointing out a number of promises for this Worlds. They are young champions who have been having impeccable campaigns over the year so far, with recently-promoted brown belt Ronaldo Candido among them. Light featherweight Candido won the Brazilian Nationals as a purple belt last year and the Pan in 2011. On his debut as a brown belt he won last Sunday’s 2011 Brazilian Nationals. “Our money’s on him to be world champion,” ventures Guilherme Mendes, who will also compete as a light featherweight, but at black belt.

Another standout is Denilson Bischiliari, a purple belt who GRACIEMAG.com has already highlighted as one of the athletes to watch out for this season. “Denilson won two World Pro qualifiers, won in Abu Dhabi, and won the Pan. He’s really dedicated, trains with the black belts and is always competing. For sure he’ll reap what he is sowing,” says Rafael Mendes in praise.

Among those from the less advanced belt groups to compete in Long Beach, Walker Pacheco is the big hope at blue belt. Other Atos aces in the Worlds mix are Marcelo Tarso (purple belt) and Bruna Ribeiro, Ralph Go and Alan Salgado (brown).

As estrelas da Atos Jiu-Jitsu estão treinando forte em Rio Claro, em São Paulo, e não é possível apontar quem será a maior estrela do time no Mundial 2011. Rafael e Gui Mendes, André Galvão, Ary Farias, Bruno Frazatto, Gilbert Durinho, Guto Campos, entre outros, estão a ponto de bala para um torneio que promete ser eletrizante, na Califórnia, mas a equipe tem muitos outros soldados.

A cúpula do time já aposta em algumas promessas para este Mundial. São jovens campeões que vem fazendo uma campanha impecável durante o ano, como o faixa-marrom recém-graduado Ronaldo Candido. Peso pluma, Candido venceu o Brasileiro de roxa, ano passado, e o Pan deste ano. Na estreia como faixa-marrom, venceu o Brasileiro 2011, no último domingo. “Apostamos nele para ser campeão mundial”, arrisca o astro Guilherme Mendes, que também vai de pluma, mas na preta.

Outro destaque é Denilson Bischiliari, faixa-roxa que já havia sido apontado pelo GRACIEMAG.com como um dos atletas para se ficar de olho na temporada. “Denilson venceu duas seletivas para o World Pro, venceu em Abu Dhabi e venceu o Pan. Eles são muito dedicados, fazem os mesmos treinos que os faixas-pretas e estão sempre competindo. Certamente eles vão colher o que já estão plantando”, elogia Rafael Mendes.

Entre os menos graduados em ação em Long Beach, Walker Pacheco é a aposta na faixa-azul. Outros futuros craques da Atos que vêm bem no Mundial são Marcelo Tarso (faixa-roxa) e Bruna Ribeiro, Ralph Go e Alan Salgado (marrom).

Thursday yielded the first batch of champions at the 2011 Pan, in Los Angeles, with white and blue belt athletes. And from among the champions arose some competitors worth keeping an eye on.

At featherweight blue belt, Denilson Bischiliari took top spot on the podium. The Atos athlete made GRACIEMAG.com’s list of athletes to watch out for this season (see here).

It’s worth pointing out as well, though, the participation of João Miyao (PSLPB Cicero Costha). The light featherweight, besides winning the division, took out much bigger opposition in winning gold in the absolute, as revealed on the IBJJF website.

Among the teams, our GMA BJJ Revolution Team did well to take first at white belt. The team results at blue are still being counted, check here to see all the results.
