In November 1991, Murilo Bustamante became one of the most notorious figures in Jiu-Jitsu. On the 26th of the month, the Carlson Gracie black belt overcame Marcelo Mendes in an epic encounter against representatives of the luta livre style, at a time of heated rivalry between the two modalities.

Time went by and MMA events and teams became professional. The Brazilian Top Team – between athletes and trainers – now has a number of luta livre black belts, among them Milton Vieira, Sérgio Babu, and Eraldo Paes.

“The world goes full turn and I feel honored for this tribute. These days professionalism is the name of the game and I have lots of luta livre kids here at BTT. There was a challenge fight and I represented Jiu-Jitsu, but I never had anything personal against anyone. To me it’s a great honor and a tribute,” remarks Bustamante.

The black belt will be awarded by Coach Eduardo Paes and certified by black belt Daniel D’Dane. Other illustrious figures will be promoted too.

“His diploma is ready and signed by me and Eraldo, it just has to arrive in Rio. There will be others promoted as well, like Rousimar Toquinho,” says D’Dane.

Em novembro de 1991, Murilo Bustamante tornou-se uma figura das mais notórias no Jiu-Jitsu. No dia 26 desse mês, o faixa-preta de Carlson Gracie derrotara Marcelo Mendes no épico desafio contra representantes da luta livre, numa época de muita rivalidade entre as modalidades.

O tempo passou e os eventos de vale-tudo e equipes se profissionalizaram. Na Brazilian Top Team, entre atletas e treinadores, há vários graduados em luta livre, entre ele Miltinho Vieira, Sérgio Babu e Eraldo Paes.

“Ó mundo dá voltas e me sinto honrado por essa homenagem. Hoje impera o profissionalismo e tenho muitos garotos da luta livre aqui na BTT. Houve um desafio e representei o Jiu-Jitsu, mas nunca tive nada pessoal contra ninguém. Para mim é uma homenagem muito honrosa”, comenta Bustamante.

A faixa vai ser entregue pelo treinador Eduardo Paes, certificada pelo faixa-preta Daniel D’Dane. Outros ilustres também vão ser graduados.

“O diploma dele já está pronto e assinado por mim e pelo Eraldo, só falta eu chegar no Rio. Vão ter outros graduados também, como o Rousimar Toquinho”, conta D’Dane.

Representatives of luta livre, sambo and Jiu-Jitsu from all around Switzerland, as well as some from France and Germany, participated in the event. There were more than 80 athletes in all, and the show drew a sizeable crowd, too.

The president of Rio de Janeiro’s Luta Livre Submission Federation Daniel D’Dane and king of Pancrase Assuério Silva were present at the event and held a seminar together.

Such was the success of the event that the next stage has already been penned in for October.

Foi realizado no dia 22 de maio, no Budo Clube Grottes, em Genebra, na Suíça, o primeiro torneio de luta livre submission no comando do representante da luta livre em Genebra, o faixa-preta Junior Barata.

O evento teve a participação de atletas da luta livre, sambo e Jiu-Jitsu de toda a Suíça, além de atletas vindos da França e Alemanha. Foram mais de 80 atletas e o público também compareceu.

Marcaram presença o presidente da Federação de Luta Livre Submission do Rio de Janeiro Daniel D’Dane e o rei do Pancrase Assuério Silva, que realizaram juntos um seminário.

E a empolgação é tanta que a próxima etapa deve ser em outubro.

O mestre Hugo Duarte, personalidade lendária da luta no Brasil, comentou que Sérgio Babu absorveu a cultura da luta livre quando treinavam juntos, por isso merecia a graduação há pelo menos dois anos. 

Babu, que também é faixa-preta de Jiu-Jitsu, hoje comanda os treinamentos na Brazilian Top Team, ao lado de Eraldo Paes.
