In those early days, MMA was far from reaching the widespread popularity it has today.

Even being able to legally organize an event in the USA was a hard thing to do.

Senator John McCann was the leading man in the opposition to the new sport.

In this environment, the UFC landed in Detroit for its ninth edition and the main event was set to be the rematch between Ken Shamrock and Dan Severn.

In UFC 6, on July 6, 1995, Shamrock quickly reached victory with a guillotine choke.

The crowd expected another great battle, but that was when the law got in the way.

After threatening to shut down the event altogether, a local judge decided give the go ahead it but only if closed-fist punches and headbutts were not allowed.

Fighters were warned beforehand and even a threat of a $100 fine per punch thrown was mentioned.

O ano foi 1995, mais precisamente no dia 14 de julho. Era a sexta edição do UFC, ainda nos primórdios e de “mãos peladas”, no qual a luta principal seria entre os lendários Dan Severn e Ken Shamrock.

Shamrock se consagrou usando o Jiu-Jitsu, e surpreendeu Severn com uma bonita guilhotina. Porém, outra finalização naquela noite entraria para história do esporte. Oleg Taktarov, russo mestre em sambo que depois viraria vilão em Hollywood em filmes com Robert DeNiro e tudo, realizou a proeza de finalizar a fera Anthony “Mad Dog” Macias, em singelos nove segundos.

Outra curiosidade interessante: a luta, que foi a segunda de três finalizações de Oleg no torneio daquela noite, foi anunciada por “Mr. Buffer”. Mas o Buffer em questão não era o Bruce, e sim seu meio-irmão, Michael Buffer.

Dan Severn, mixed martial arts pioneer and one of the first fighters to compete in the UFC’s early days, retired from competition on Tuesday.

Severn made the announcement through his official website, stating he’s calling it quits after matches with Royce Gracie, Ken Shamrock and Mark Coleman never came to fruition.

“I was attempting to do my own self-directed retirement tour in the last couple of years, reaching out to only three people: Mark Coleman, Ken Shamrock and Royce Gracie,” Severn wrote on dansevern.com. “I spoke with two of them (Mark and Ken), and through [a] representative for Royce. It seems as though these matches will not take place for whatever reasons and my life now goes on to the next chapter.”

Severn added that he will still be involved with MMA, working with various companies to support the industry in roles such as play-by-play commentator, ambassador, as well as doing appearances.

“The MMA workshops and seminars will continue,” he wrote. “I have a lot of fun with them and enjoy the interaction with the young competitors … ”

Severn’s first documented MMA fight came at UFC 4, where he took on Anthony Macias in the first round of the promotion’s then-tournament format. He submitted Macias, as well as Marcus Bossett in the semifinals, both by rear-naked choke.

“The Beast” moved onto the finals where he met Royce Gracie. The two battled for nearly 16 minutes, but Severn was eventually submitted via triangle choke by the tournament champion.

Severn has also excelled as a professional wrester, and announced that 2013 would be his last year participating as an entertainer.

Severn finished his MMA career with a 101-19 record.

In the early days of the UFC, Royce Gracie took the world by storm with his Jiu-Jitsu and guard, leaving a string of bigger, heavier opponents in his wake. In December 1994, at UFC 4, the commentator for the fight between the Brazilian black belt and Dan Severn said: “He wants to get out of there; he’s got nothing.” A slight misjudgment, as Royce was in the process of introducing the world to the triangle choke. Within mere seconds, the lumbering wrestler was tapping out, signaling he’d given up.

The guard continues to draw awe to this day. In the latest issue of GRACIEMAG, for example, Jiu-Jitsu stars take a close look at the details involved in mastering the guard and the triangle. Nos primórdios do UFC, Royce Gracie espantou o mundo com seu Jiu-Jitsu e sua guarda, contra lutadores maiores e mais fortes. Em dezembro de 1994, no UFC 4, o narrador da luta entre o faixa-preta brasileiro e Dan Severn comentou: “Ele está querendo sair por baixo, mas não há nada ali”. Ledo engano, Royce estava apresentando ao mundo o triângulo. Em questão de segundos, o fortão deu os três tapinhas, desistindo da peleja.
