This coming Saturday brings us UFC 150 from Colorado, USA, and the main events look guaranteed to provide plenty of action. Besides the heavily anticipated rematch between Ben Henderson and Frankie Edgar worth the promotional lightweight title, Donald “Cowboy” Cerrone will be taking on Melvin Guillard, while Ed Herman squares off with Jake Shields.

And as is his custom during the week leading up to a UFC event, promotional president Dana White released his usual behind-the-scenes video. This episode, you get to see everything that went on backstage at UFC on Fox 4.

Saturday saw the UFC pitch tent at the Honda Center in Anaheim, California. For the historic first broadcast on Fox, as well as on Brazil’s most popular station, Globo, Junior Cigano took his post at the top of the heavyweight heap. Check out the results to arise from the card:

New champion

For the first UFC broadcast not just on network TV in the USA but on Brazil’s most popular TV station, Globo, Junior Cigano defeated Cain Velazquez and is now the UFC heavyweight champion. From the outset, the Brazilian took control of the ring and threw his fists menacingly. A right cross behind the ear knocked Cain to the ground and a few follow-up strikes left referee Big John no choice but to call an end to the encounter. The knockout came at 1:04 minutes of the opening round.

The win marks Cigano’s 14th in 15 fights, his eighth in a row in the UFC. Six years ago Cigano was serving tables. In a meteoric rise, he joins Anderson Silva and José Aldo as Brazil’s current UFC champions.

Henderson vs. Guida

Three action-packed rounds played out in the contest between Ben Henderson and Clay Guida. Henderson did well to control Guida’s momentum and used his ground game to good effect, passing guard and reaching back mount. Clay did throw some danger Henderson’s way in the third round with a snug guillotine, but Henderson worked through it to win the unanimous decision, and now he’s setting his sights on lightweight kingpin Frankie Edgar.

Submission swap

In the first round, Pablo Garza risked going for a tight kneebar on Dustin Poirier. Seeking his fourth win in a row, Poirier was already seeing the better of the action when he sunk a tight arm-triangle choke to end the action at 1:32 minutes of the second round.

In the first round, Ricardo Lamas had his work cut out for him against Cub Swanson but managed to work his way free from a tight guillotine. In the second, Lamas came up with his own choke hold, finishing Swanson with an arm-and-neck choke 2:43 minutes in.

Quick knockout

Damarques Johnson recovered his winning ways by laying out Clay Harvison with an upper cut and following up with another strike before referee Herb Dean separated the two 1:34 minutes into the first round. At bantamweight, Darren Uyenoyama controlled the action against Kid Yamamoto throughout the three rounds, winning the unanimous decision after the final bell.

Prelims serve up Jiu-Jitsu show

Alex Caceres had back-to-back losses leading in to his fight with former WEC champion Cole Escovedo. Caceres controlled the center of the ring and put on a sightly striking display, but the highlight came in the third round, when he landed in bottom position. “Bruce Leroy” did well in using his gentle art skills to get out of the jam, sinking a triangle, extending his opponents arm in an armbar, and even slapping on an omoplata. Escovedo managed to untangle himself but, once the three rounds had played out, he was the one to suffer a third loss in a row.

O sábado foi de UFC on Fox no Honda Center, em Anaheim, Califórnia. Em um evento histórico, Junior Cigano se sagrou o novo campeão. Confira os resultados e análises das principais lutas:

Novo campeão

Pela primeira vez em transmissão ao vivo para a TV aberta nos EUA e pela Globo, no Brasil, Junior Cigano derrotou Cain Velasquez e é o novo campeão peso pesado do UFC. Desde o início o Brasileiro dominou o centro do ringue e jogou perigosamente os seus socos. Um cruzado de esquerda derrubou Cain e alguns socos depois só restaria ao juiz Big John separar. O nocaute foi a 1min4s do round inicial.

“Acabou, acabou!”, gritava Galvão Bueno na transmissão, completado pelo comentarista convidado Vitor Belfort: “Foi um swing de direita, o famoso pombo sem asa!”.

Esta foi a 14ª vitória de Cigano em 15 lutas, a oitava seguida no UFC. Há seis anos, Cigano era garçom. Numa escalada meteórica, se junta a Anderson Silva e José Aldo, todos atualmente  campeões do Ultimate.

Henderson vs Guida

Foram três rounds de muita ação na luta entre Ben Henderson e Clay Guida. Henderson soube controlar o ímpeto de Guida e usou bem a luta de chão, tendo passado a guarda e atacado as costas. Clay ainda incomodou com uma guilhotina, na terceira etapa, mas Henderson levou a melhor em decisão unânime e fica de olho no campeão de leves Frankie Edgar.

Troca de finalizações

Na primeira parcial, Pablo Garza arriscou uma justa chave de joelho em Dustin Poirier. Em busca do quatro triunfo seguido, Poirier já vinha sendo mais efetivo quando, no segundo assalto, encaixou um justo triângulo de mão para definir, a 1min32s.

No primeiro round, Ricardo Lamas levou um sufoco danado de Cub Swanson, mas escapou da justa guilhotina. Na segunda parcial, no entanto, foi Lamas quem usou o estrangulamento. Com um justo katagatami, fez Swanson dar os três tapinhas, aos 2min43s.

Nocaute rapidinho

DaMarques Johnson se recuperou da última derrota com um rápido nocaute contra Clay Harvison. Com um poderoso upper, derrubou o oponente. Ainda aplicou mais um soco até o árbitro Herb Dean separar aos 1min34s do primeiro assalto. Em luta válida pelo peso pluma Darren Uyenoyama controlou os três rounds e derrotou Kid Yamamoto.

Bom Jiu-Jitsu nas preliminares

Alex Caceres vinha de duas derrotas para encarar Cole Escovedo, ex-campeão do WEC. Dominou o centro do ringue e foi bem com belos chutes, mas o melhor momento de Caceres foi na terceira parcial, quando caiu por baixo. O “Bruce Leroy” usou muito bem a arte suave para sair do sufoco. Arrochou com um triângulo, esticou o braço do oponente com um armlock e ainda plicou uma chave omoplata. Escovedo escapo das armadilhas, mas acumulou, após decisão unânime, três derrotas seguidas.

“Belcher is super strong, has good Jiu-Jitsu and sharp muay thai. I trained a lot and, God willing, everything will go well for me,” he is quoted as saying on the UFC website.

“I feel this will be a good fight because our styles are similar. But the fact that we are both coming off losses is further motivation,” he adds.

Anderson is the champion because he’s the best, period” Wilson Gouveia

A former light heavyweight, Gouveia will fight at middleweight. The change of division could set him up to face Anderson Silva. Nevertheless, the American Top Team representative discards a confrontation with the current champ. At least for the time being.

“I’m conscious of the fact I’m not ready to face a guy of the caliber of Anderson Silva. For that reason I’m trying to improve as a fighter, not just technically, but psychologically as well,” remarks the Brazilian, who spares no praise for the current champion.

“It’s one thing for someone to think he can beat the champion, but to win is completely different. Anderson is the champion because he’s the best, period. Of course one day he’ll lose the belt, but by the time that happens a lot of competitors will show confidence they can beat him and, when fight time comes, they won’t be able to accomplish what they promised to,” he says in finishing.
