If Vinny Magalhaes doesn’t get a contract renewal or gets abruptly cut by the UFC, the light heavyweight Jiu-Jitsu specialist will retire from fighting.

The fighter said he’s currently waiting on a decision by the UFC on whether they’ll offer him a new deal after his next fight — which is the last on his current contract — or if the company will release him altogether.

“I have one more fight left in my contract, but we all know that it doesn’t mean much and there’s a chance that I get cut,” Magalhaes told MSN Brazil. “Before this fight I said I deserved to get cut if I didn’t win. I’m waiting for the UFC’s decision. Anything can happen, but I really don’t care, man.”

Many former and unnamed current UFC fighters have complained in the past about the low wages offered by the UFC. Magalhaes recognized the complaints of his colleagues, but added that fighting outside of the organization makes the income much worse. That being the case, if he receives his walking papers, Magalhaes doesn’t see a point to fighting anymore.

The lack of income from competing is something Magalhaes has dealt with in the past, he said. When he was competing in Jiu-Jitsu, he decided to stop because of the financial problems he ran into. He doesn’t plan on having the same issues in his MMA career.

“People say that the UFC doesn’t pay much to their fighters, but if you look to the other events it’s even worse,” he said, adding, “so if they cut me, I don’t see why I should keep fighting in other events.

“I’d rather open my own gym than fight for little money. I stopped fighting in Jiu-Jitsu because of the financial part, so it would make no sense for me to return now. If the UFC doesn’t renew my contract, I’ll stop (fighting).”

UFC President Dana White is firmly against the decision by the Swedish Mixed Martial Arts Federation (SMMAF) to deem Alexander Gustafsson unfit to fight Saturday, according to a post the president made on Wednesday.

White slammed the SMMAF with a Twitter post that included a picture of Gustafsson taken Wednesday that, according to White, doesn’t allow one to see a cut.

“This pic was taken of Gustafsson today and u can’t even see the cut!!!” White posted on the social media website. “Worst decision I have EVER seen to pull fight.”

The SMMAF decided on Tuesday that Gustafsson would not be medically cleared to participate in Saturday’s UFC on Fuel TV 9 main event against Gegard Mousasi due to a cut the Swedish fighter sustained in training.

As a replacement to Gustafsson, the UFC inserted his training partner, Ilir Latifi, to contest Mousasi in this weekend’s featured bout.

Gustafsson released a statement early Tuesday via MMANytt.se that explained how his laceration happened — an unfortunate mishap in wrestling practice.

“I am extremely sorry for this and I feel [for] Gegard Mousasi.” Gustafsson said in the statement. “I also suffer with the fans who have been looking forward to this event and this match.”

Gustafsson’s withdraw from the card has forced UFC officials to change the main event from a five-round to a three-round fight, which stems from the fact that Latifi is taking the fight with four days notice, according to various reports.

UFC on Fuel TV 9 is scheduled take place Saturday, April 6, in Stockholm, Sweden.

Due to a cut sustained in training, Alexander Gustafsson has been deemed unfit to participate in his main event fight at UFC on Fuel TV 9 against Gegard Mousasi, according to a release received by GracieMag.com on Tuesday.

The Swedish Mixed Martial Arts Federation (SMMAF) said the cut doesn’t allow Gustafsson to be medically cleared for competition in time for Saturday’s card in Stockholm, Sweden.

“As it is clear that Alexander Gustafsson will not be fit to compete as planned and cannot be medically cleared on Friday the 5th of April,” the release read, “the SMMAF Medical Committee has today decided that Alexander Gustafsson will not be allowed to participate in the planned match on April 6th.”

Medical examinations, according to the SMMAF, are carried out the day before a match to “safeguard” the competitor from being cleared early.

In the case of Gustafsson, a request was made for an early medical exam, which was performed on March 30, according to the release. The SMMAF doctors who performed the exam told Gustafsson that the cut made it very unlikely that he would be cleared to fight in Saturday’s Fuel TV card.

The federation today reviewed the circumstances of Gustafsson’s injury, and bearing in mind that a proper medical exam had been performed, “nothing in the SMMAF regulations hinders the SMMAF Medical Committee from making a decision to stop Gustafsson from competing.”

No formal announcements have been made by the UFC in regards to the status of the main event or the fight card, but GracieMag.com will provide further news as more information becomes available.

If UFC welterweight Nick Diaz tests positive for marijuana metabolites following UFC 158, he may get cut from the organization, according to UFC President Dana White.

White told reporters on Thursday that the UFC will likely take the action of releasing Diaz if the fighter repeated the offense as he did following his last fight.

“Probably,” White said when asked if he’d cut Diaz with another positive test.

Diaz has tested positive for marijuana metabolites two times before, the first time being after his 2007 Pride fight with Takanori Gomi, and the second coming after his UFC 143 loss to Carlos Condit.

Both positive tests prompted the Nevada State Athletic Commission (NSAC), the governing body overseeing both fights, to suspend Diaz for a year retroactive to the dates of the fights.

UFC 158 will be Diaz’s first fight back from his last suspension. If he produces another positive test, it may be the last time he’s seen in the Octagon, according to White.

The UFC has said in the past that they have a “strict, consistent policy” regarding illegal substances. The company has viewed use of marijuana, for example, as a breach of contract because of this policy.

Former UFC fighter Matt Riddle was the last athlete cut from the organization stemming from a positive test for marijuana metabolites.

“The UFC organization is exercising its right to terminate Riddle for breach of his obligations under his Promotional Agreement as well as the UFC Fighter Conduct Policy,” the company said in a release when they terminated Riddle in late February.

Following the UFC 158 pre-fight press conference, White added that Riddle was released because because he’s a “moron,” citing an interview the fighter did where he said he smokes marijuana to avoid beating his children.

“Matt Riddle is a moron,” White said. “That’s why he got cut.”

Diaz was unavailable for comment regarding a potential cut with a positive test at the time of this publication.

UFC 158 will take place this Saturday, March 16, at the Bell Centre in Montreal.

Following the release of welterweight Matt Riddle for a second failed drug test for marijuana, the UFC on Wednesday afternoon issued an official statement regarding their actions.

The company said that the positive test for marijuana metabolites was a breach of contract and violation of their conduct policy. For these reasons, Riddle was terminated.

“The UFC organization is exercising its right to terminate Riddle for breach of his obligations under his Promotional Agreement as well as the UFC Fighter Conduct Policy,”  the UFC posted on their website.

“The UFC organization has a strict, consistent policy against the use of any illegal and/or performance-enhancing drugs, stimulants or masking agents. The outcome of the bout against Che Mills was changed to a no-contest and the results of the positive test will be reported to the official Association of Boxing Commissions MMA record-keeper.”

As GRACIEMAG.com reported Wednesday morning, Riddle tested positive for marijuana after his UFC on Fuel TV 7 fight with Che Mills. The failed test was his second, the first one coming after his UFC 149 fight with Chris Clements.

Both fights have been turned to no-contests.

Following a second positive test for marijuana, welterweight Matt Riddle has been cut by the UFC, according to reports on Tuesday evening.

Riddle failed his drug test following his UFC on Fuel TV 7 fight with Che Mills in London, where he won a split decision over the homecountry fighter.

Typically, the local governing body, or athletic commission, oversees the drug testing for UFC events. England, however, has no such commission, so the UFC supervised the drug testing for the Fuel event where he subsequently failed his test.

Riddle first tested positive for marijuana following UFC 149 in Calgary, Alberta, Canada. The second failure in London, apparently, was enough for UFC brass to handle and Riddle was let go from the company.

Riddle’s name is added to the growing list of former UFC fighters that have been cut from the promotion. Last week, news broke that 16 fighters, including top-10 ranked Jon Fitch, were let go from the promotion. Riddle’s opponent last opponent, Mills, was included on that cut list.

UFC president Dana White went on to say that Fitch’s cut made sense for a number of reasons, including being too expensive.
