The couple Leandro Lo and Luiza Monteiro won the absolute division at Copa Kamikaze 8 for the second time, this Sunday the 11th in Ribeirão Preto, where 700 athletes from across Brazil took to the mats in competition.

In the men’s final, a curious fact: world champion Leandro Lo would have had Rafael Naves (Núcleo), a confessed fan of Master Cícero Costha, ahead of him. Recently promoted to brown belt, “Parmesão”, as Rafael is known, chose not to face his idol. “He’s a role model, an example of an athlete, to me. I surely wouldn’t have a chance against Lo, but I was really happy and honored to make it to the final and close out with him.”

Leandro Lo, who won his weight class, as well as four matches in the absolute, won Copa Kamikaze for the second time in his two appearances at the event. “There’s a great level of competition and good prize money, and that adds value for the athletes. I’m so happy to have fans and friends wherever I go, and as for Rafael, he’s got talent too,” he said.

Female division – in the women’s final, Luiza Monteiro (CheckMat) faced Bruna Ribeiro (Atos) and, just as she did at the previous chapter of Copa Kamikaze, it was an armbar that earned her the gold.

“I already imagined I would face Bruna, so I studied her. Knowing your opponent helps a lot,” she explained. Bruna is still recovering from the loss of her mother, who passed away in October. “I made it to black belt just before my mother died. I sewed her name [Noemi] on my belt and came, because I know how much she would have liked to be here,” said the athlete from the town of Rio Preto.

The couple – By each other’s side throughout the entire competition, Leandro and Luiza were only apart when competing. Together for six months so far, the pair have been amassing titles, like the Abu Dhabi Pro 2012 Trials and the absolute at the São Paulo-based Internacional de Jiu-Jitsu, which earned them plane tickets to the 2012 Pan. The cheerful and friendly couple revealed to journalist João Augusto some of the details behind their union.

On who gives who advice, Luiza was categorical: “I get more pointers from him than he does from me. Just having Leandro Lo by my side makes me calm when I compete. I won a lot of matches thanks to him,” she states.

Leandro, on his part, stresses that having Luiza as his companion at competitions gives him strength. “She becomes my coach,” he jokes. Any argument between the two is limited to being about Jiu-Jitsu: “There’s no way around it, she gets me every time,” said the champion in finishing.

Os namorados Leandro Lo e Luiza Monteiro foram bicampeões absolutos na oitava Copa Kamikaze, que reuniu, neste domingo, 11, em Ribeirão Preto, cerca de 700 atletas de várias partes do país.

Na final do masculino, um fato inusitado: Leandro Lo, campeão mundial, teria pela frente Rafael Naves (Núcleo), fã declarado do faixa-preta de mestre Cícero Costha. Recém-graduado faixa marrom, “Parmesão”, como Rafael é conhecido, preferiu não lutar com seu ídolo. “Ele é minha referência, um exemplo de atleta. Certamente não teria chances contra o Lo, mas fiquei muito feliz e honrado por chegado à final e fechado com ele.”

Para Leandro Lo, campeão na categoria também, e que acumulava quatro finalizações em quatro lutas no absoluto, este foi seu segundo título máximo na Copa Kamikaze, em duas participações. “É uma competição de excelente nível, tem uma boa premiação em dinheiro e isso ajuda a valorizar os atletas. Fico feliz por ter fãs e amigos aonde vou e, quanto ao Rafael, é um talento, também”, disse.

Feminino – Na decisão do feminino, Luiza Monteiro (CheckMat) enfrentou Bruna Ribeiro (Atos) e, assim como fez na edição anterior da Copa Kamikaze, ela usou uma chave de braço para conquistar a medalha de ouro.

“Já imaginava que podia enfrentar a Bruna e a estudei. Conhecer a adversária ajuda muito”, ressaltou. Bruna, guerreira, ainda se recupera da perda da mãe, falecida no final de outubro. “Alcancei a faixa-preta um pouco antes de minha mãe morrer, gravei o nome dela (Noemi) na faixa e vim, porque sei que ela gostaria que eu estivesse aqui”, comentou a atleta de Rio Preto.

Casal em detalhes – Sempre colados um ao outro, durante toda a competição, Leandro e Luiza só se separavam no momento das lutas. Namorados há seis meses, juntos eles vêm colecionando títulos, como a seletiva para o Abu Dhabi Pro 2012 e o absoluto do Internacional de Jiu-Jitsu, em São Paulo, que lhes garantiu passagem para o Pan 2012. Simpático e atencioso, o casal revelou ao jornalista João Augusto alguns detalhes dessa apaixonante união.

Sobre quem dá mais conselho a quem, Luiza foi categórica: “Recebo muito mais dicas do que passo. Só de ter o Leandro do meu lado, isso já me dá tranquilidade para competir. Ganhei muitas lutas graças a ele”, afirma.

Leandro, por sua vez, ressalta que ter Luiza como companheira nas competições o fortalece. “Ela também vira minha técnica na hora”, brinca. Discussão entre os dois, só sobre Jiu-Jitsu mesmo: “E aí não tem jeito, ela me finaliza todas as vezes”, encerra o campeão, com sorriso apaixonado.

Leandro Lo, a black belt who made major waves on the competition scene this year, will return to action at Copa Kamikazi, a tournament coming up this December 11 in Ribeirão Preto, São Paulo state, where his girlfriend, Luiza Monteiro will also take to the mats.

This eighth installment of Copa Kamikaze kicks off at 8 am this Sunday at Palestra Itália club. All the club’s facilities, including the pool and game room, will be open for competitors to use freely, including the fine fare at the eateries.

Over the previous seven events, Copa Kamikaze has paid out a total of 30,000 Brazilian reais (around $18,000) and served as stage for nearly 4,000 athletes. Tickets for Copa Kamikaze cost R$ 5 plus a liter of milk, with will be donated to the NGO Sobriventes do Amanhã.

A competição será no próximo domingo, 11 de dezembro, a partir das 8h, no Palestra Itália Clube, em Ribeirão Preto, São Paulo. Todas as dependências do clube, como piscinas e salão de jogos, estarão à disposição dos competidores, além de bela estrutura para alimentação.

Com premiação em dinheiro, a Copa Kamikaze já distribuiu mais de R$ 30 mil em sete eventos, reunindo quase quatro mil atletas. O ingresso para a Copa Kamikaze de Jiu-Jitsu custa R$ 5 mais 1 litro de leite, que será doado à ONG Sobreviventes do Amanhã, no Jardim Salgado Filho.
