The next engagement of Fabricio Werdum, the heavyweight UFC star, is set. It will take place Feb. 22, when the two-time world BJJ champion (2003, 2004) will meet no-gi star Gordon Ryan. The California-based Brazilian, who was handed a two-year suspension from the UFC, has been thinking about how he plans to handle the phenom from Renzo Gracie Academy.

“We will be fighting in Mexico at the Eddie Bravo Invitational (EBI), under combat jiu-jitsu rules, which is grappling plus slapping — a no-gi fight that allows for slaps when the athletes are on the ground,” Werdum told Graciemag on the phone. “It will be a minitournament with four fighters, with Josh Barnett and another one yet o be confirmed. The prize for the champion will be 20,000 dollars.” According to the organization, the fourth man will be Vinny “Pezão” Magalhães, an old acquaintance of Werdum’s — the Gracie Tijuca fighter foiled Werdum’s third ADCC title in 2011 in England, in the over-99kg final. Barnett, a former UFC champion, was recently submitted in a no-gi event in the U.S.

“My training will again be with Yuri Simões, who, as well as having fought Ryan a few times, will also be participating at EBI,” Werdum added. “As people know, Gordon is more of a leg lock specialist; he likes catching feet and heels. He’s very strong, one of the best grapplers in activity for sure, but I think things change a lot with the slapping involved. It’s a different game; all I think about is the knockout. In my mind, it’s all about the knockout. If it’s in the rules, we’re gonna go for it. But you have to know how to use it — not just think of slapping and forgetting about the jiu-jitsu. It’s gotta be an intelligent game. I’ve always liked trading slaps at the gym since I was a kid. Let’s see how Gordon behaves in this style, whether he will also display heart.”

Werdum and Yuri Simões have a curious history together. They met training in Rio de Janeiro, when the former was already a champion, with classic duels fought against Marcio Pé de Pano, and Yuri was just eight years old. Today, alongside Rubens Cobrinha, Yuri is the key piece in the preparation of the ex-UFC champion, making him sweat in practice no-gi matches and updating his game with many tricks regarding the guard and guard-passing.

“I remain active despite the unfair suspension by the Usada,” said Werdum. “People told me they would reduce my penalty if I snitched on other UFC athletes who were doping, but I repudiated that; I’m no snitch, nor would I ever harm anybody’s life.”

O próximo compromisso de Fabricio Werdum, astro peso pesado do UFC, está marcado: será no dia 22 de fevereiro, quando o faixa-preta de Jiu-Jitsu bicampeão mundial (2003/04) vai sair no tapa, literalmente, com o astro sem kimono Gordon Ryan. O gaúcho radicado na Califórnia, que segue suspenso do UFC por dois anos, devido a punição pela Usada, adiantou como planeja lidar com o fenômeno da academia de Renzo Gracie NY.

“Vamos lutar no México sim, pelo evento Eddie Bravo Invitational (EBI), nas regras do combat Jiu-Jitsu, que é o grappling com tapa, uma luta sem kimono que permite tapas quando os atletas estão no chão”, comentou Werdum, pelo telefone. “Será um mini-torneio de quatro lutadores, com o Josh Barnett e mais um a ser confirmado. A premiação para o campeão será de 20 mil dólares”. Segundo a organização divulgou, o quarto homem será Vinny “Pezão” Magalhães, velho conhecido de Werdum – o atleta da Gracie Tijuca impediu o tri de Fabricio no ADCC 2011, na Inglaterra, na final acima de 99kg. Já o também ex-campeão do UFC Barnett foi recentemente finalizado por Gordon Ryan, em torneio sem pano nos EUA.

“Meus treinos serão novamente com o Yuri Simões, que além de já ter lutado com o Gordon algumas vezes também vai fazer uma participação no EBI”, contou Fabricio ao GRACIEMAG.com. “Como o pessoal conhece, o Gordon é mais especialista nas chaves de perna, gosta de pegar muito pé e ‘calcanha’. Ele é muito bom, um dos melhores grapplers da atualidade certamente, mas eu acho que com tapa muda muita coisa, né? É outro jogo, e eu só penso no nocaute (risos). Na minha cabeça é nocaute. Se está na regra e vale, vamos tentar. Mas é preciso saber usar, não ficar apenas pensando em dar tapa e esquecer do Jiu-Jitsu. Tem de ser um jogo inteligente. Eu sempre gostei de fazer taparia na academia desde garoto, vamos ver como o Gordon se comporta nesse estilo, se ele também vai mostrar coração”.

Werdum e seu auxiliar Yuri Simões têm uma história curiosa: conheceram-se em treino no Rio de Janeiro, quando o gaúcho já era um campeão, com grandes duelos contra Marcio Pé de Pano, e Yuri tinha apenas 8 anos. Hoje, ao lado de Rubens Cobrinha, Yuri é peça fundamental nos preparativos do ex-campeão do UFC, dando aquele calor nos treinos sem pano e atualizando o jogo de Fabricio com vários macetes de guarda e passagens.

“Sigo na ativa apesar da suspensão injusta por parte da Usada. Pessoas me disseram que reduziriam minha punição se eu delatasse outros atletas do UFC que fizessem uso de doping, mas eu repudiei isso, não sou dedo-duro nem atrasaria jamais a vida de alguém”, concluiu Werdum.
