Any intern worth his salt shows up 15 minutes after lunch with his T-shirt caked in sauce. The GRACIEMAG.com rookie repeated the routine today, and he looked to be a powder keg of excitement. The reason: There are two UFCs going on this weekend: one in New Jersey on Friday, and another on Saturday in Minas Gerais.

The two days are indeed rich with fistic promise. There’s the barbarous Clay Guida against Gray Maynard in New Jersey; the milestone of 2,000 fights under the UFC banner, to be celebrated when Yuri Marajó and Hacran Dias square off at UFC 147 in Belo Horizonte City; the return of Wanderlei Silva’s own brand of hyperviolence to Brazil for the first time since August 2000, for the 47th fight of his career; the appearance of a Jiu-Jitsu world champion on the card in Sérgio Moraes, the 11th black belt world champion to step into the octagon.

With so much information swirling around his mind, the pipsqueak looks set to blow, and a gem seems sure to spout from his mouth. “Boss, did you catch the scene where Sérgio Moraes grabs a mop to help the UFC cleaning ladies out at the open training session yesterday in Belo Horizonte?” he said with a gleeful grin.

The whole newsroom stopped in its tracks. Could the upstart journalist finally be onto something worth writing? An article on Jiu-Jitsu and humility, on good cheer, on the appreciation of effort and sacrifice? A chat with Sérgio Moraes about his origins and where he wants to go at this new stage of his career, as a professional fighter working for the UFC?

No. No, he wasn’t. “Imagine the headline! Sérgio mops the floor with Mutante! How about it?”

Sérgio grabs a mop and helps the cleaning lady dry the dojo floor in BH. The Alliance champ has his work cut out for him against Mutante at UFC 147, to be broadcast live on Brazil's biggest TV network, TV Globo. The station will also be showing the fight between Wand and Rich Franklin, as well as Rony Jason versus Pepey.

Patient as a monk, the newsroom chief called the intern over for a gentle lecture on focusing on facts and details, but never the commonplace. That Sérgio went to work with a mop, everyone saw; but what did the cleaning lady think about it? What was her name? Did she recognize the Alliance team representative from TV, or did she not have a clue who he was? Did Sérgio remember the hard times of his past as he rubbed down the mat? Etc.

“Good one, boss. I got it. How about: Sérgio looking to rub out Mutante?!”

So as not to have to hear anything else of the sort, we sat the seal-like creature down in a corner and asked him to, analytically and without bias, list his picks for the winners of the two weekend UFC events.

É um fim de semana rico, de fato. Há o bárbaro Clay Guida contra Gray Maynard em Nova Jersey; há a marca de 2.000 lutas atingida pelo UFC, a ser celebrada durante Yuri Marajó vs Hacran Dias, no UFC 147 em BH; há o retorno de Wanderlei Silva, 47 lutas na carreira, a um evento em solo brasileiro, algo que não ocorria desde agosto de 2000; há a presença de um campeão mundial de Jiu-Jitsu no card, Serginho Moraes – a fera da Alliance será o 11º campeão mundial na faixa-preta a pisar no octagon.

Com tanta informação, a cabecinha do jovem foca ficou ainda mais cheia, e tome pérola. “Chefia, viu a cena do Serginho Moraes pegando o rodo para ajudar as faxineiras do UFC, no treino aberto de ontem em Belo Horizonte?”, disse ele, arreganhando os dentes.

A redação inteira parou. Será que viria, enfim, uma boa pauta? Um artigo sobre Jiu-Jitsu e humildade, sobre bom humor, apreço ao esforço e ao sacrifício? Um papo com Serginho Moraes sobre suas origens e aonde ele quer chegar, em sua nova fase na carreira, como lutador profissional do UFC?

Não, não viria: “Imagina a manchete! Serginho quer passar o rodo em Mutante! Que tal?”

Serginho cata o rodo e ajuda a faxineira a enxugar o dojô, em BH. O campeão da Alliance tem missão dura contra Mutante no UFC 147, em luta exibida ao vivo pela TV Globo. A emissora promete transmitir ainda a luta de Wand e a de Rony Jason vs Pepey.

Com a paciência de um monge, o chefe chamou o estagiário para uma suave preleção sobre privilegiar os fatos e detalhes, mas jamais os lugares-comuns. Que Serginho empunhou o rodo todo mundo viu, mas o que a faxineira achou disso? Qual o nome dela? Ela conhecia o lutador da Alliance da Globo ou nem percebeu que ele era o atleta? Serginho relembrou dos tempos difíceis enquanto esfregava o tatame? Etc.

“Boa chefia, entendi. Que tal: Serginho quer esfregar Mutante!?”.

“O Jiu-Jitsu na Cohab já existe há bastante tempo, com professor Dan, que formou o Serginho. Porém o espaço estava muito mal tratado e as condições bastante precárias. Serginho conseguiu apoio do subprefeito que reformou toda a associação esportiva de lá. O novo espaço ficou lindo e as condições para os alunos melhoraram sensivelmente”, disse o general da Alliance ao GRACIEMAG.com.

“O Serginho é da Cohab e tem uma identificação muito grande com toda a comunidade. Ele se tornou um exemplo de sucesso e de superação para todos. Não só de lá, mas de todo o Jiu-Jitsu. A influência dele na vida das crianças e jovens da Cohab vai ao encontro ao nosso principal objetivo com o Jiu-Jitsu: melhorar a vida das pessoas”.

Depois de discursar sobre a importância da Cohab para a Alliance, Gurgel repassou posições aos alunos e finalizou o dia com um churrasco.

“Saí de lá já era meia-noite, cansado de um longo dia, mas feliz de ver o bom trabalho que o Serginho e o Dan estão fazendo”, finalizou Gurgel, que nos enviou algumas fotos.
