That Godofredo “Pepey” Castro is a Jiu-Jitsu ace and unbeaten in MMA, even Brazilian sports commentator Galvão Bueno knows. But who is the first TUF Brazil finalist really?

To begin, Pepey has been fighting since he was 12 years of age, which may help to explain some things. From the city of Fortaleza, in the Northeast Brazilian state of Ceará, the 24-year-old has amassed numerous medals around the northeastern region, both in Jiu-Jitsu and in MMA. With his crafty guard, Godofredo Pepey commands respect for his intricate fighting style, as well as for his charisma and friendly nature outside of the ring.

“He treats everyone the same. He greets everybody, talks to everyone, is always friendly. He never goes out at night. His thing is training and teaching his students, who happen to be winning most of the Jiu-Jitsu tournaments here in Ceará,” explained the black belt Claudio Oliveira, Pepey’s brothers and one of the first people to encourage him.

Pepey now holds black belts in Jiu-Jitsu and Thai boxing (in Brazil there are belts for Thai boxing), has amassed 11 MMA wins—three of them in the TUF house. “He’s living out a dream. It is all he ever wanted. He deserves everything he’s going through; he’s a hard worker,” added the finalist’s brother.

If you believe in yourself, soon others will too.

“He’s never been in an IBJJF World Championship because he lacked sponsorship. However, here in the Northeast he’s a seven-time North/Northeastern champion and two-time Ceará State champion. He never gave up on his dream of making a living through fighting,” said the brother, underscoring the biggest lesson of Pepey’s career: always believe in yourself, otherwise no one else will.

“In Jiu-Jitsu here in the state, his biggest rivalries on the mat were with Caio Magalhães [now in the UFC], Helio Mourão and Thiago Goiabeira,” he further elaborated.

“He started training under me, after that he went to Ricardo Holanda. He also trained with Manoel Soares, William Couto, Carlos David, and for the last five years he’s been training with Marcio Guilherme ‘Cupim’ at MG team,” Claudio added.

The Ceará native with brown eyes and naturally black hair (when he doesn’t die it orange) is a black belt Jiu-Jitsu newcomer generating the biggest buzz on TV. In his hometown he is affectionately approached when at the bakery and on the street. Last Monday morning, having his customary coffee, the last mystery cleared the air. Why the nickname “Pepey”?

“My sisters nicknamed him Pepey. He was a pesky kid. They just started calling him Pepey, Pepey out of the blue, and it stuck,” recalled the brother.

At 1.80 meters and weighing 66 kg, Pepey awaits his opponent in the “TUF Brazil” final, to be determined between of the semifinal pitting Hugo Wolverine and favored-to-win Rony Jason—who Pepey happens to have already faced in the gi.

Que Godofredo “Pepey” Castro é uma fera do Jiu-Jitsu e está invicto no MMA, até o Galvão Bueno sabe. Mas quem é afinal o primeiro finalista do “TUF Brasil”, o reality show que está mexendo com a Rede Globo?

Pepey, para começar, luta desde os 12 anos de idade, o que talvez já explique muita coisa. Cearense de Fortaleza, o magrinho de 24 anos coleciona diversos títulos no Nordeste, tanto no Jiu-Jitsu como no MMA. Dono de uma guarda afiadíssima, Godofredo Pepey é respeitado pelo seu estilo de lutar, bem plástico, e também pelo seu carisma e gentileza fora do ringue.

“Ele trata todo mundo igual. Cumprimenta todo mundo, fala com geral, sempre simpático. Ele não sai de noite nunca, o lance dele é treinar e dar aulas para seus alunos, que aliás estão ganhando a maioria dos campeonatos de Jiu-Jitsu aqui no Ceará”, garante o faixa-preta Claudio Oliveira, irmão do lutador e um de seus primeiros incentivadores.

Pepey hoje é faixa-preta de Jiu-Jitsu e muay thai, acumula 11 vitórias no MMA – três delas na casa do TUF. “Ele está vivendo um sonho. Era tudo o que ele sempre quis, ele merece tudo que ele está passando, é um batalhador”, ressalta o mano.

Se você acredita em si, outros também logo vão acreditar

“Ele nunca disputou o Mundial da IBJJF por falta de patrocínio. Porém, aqui no Nordeste ele é heptacampeão Norte/Nordeste e dez vezes campeão cearense. Ele nunca abriu mão do seu sonho de viver da luta”, disse o irmão, reforçando a lição maior da carreira de Pepey: acredite em si sempre, se não os outros é que não vão acreditar.

“No Jiu-Jitsu aqui no estado, as maiores rivalidades dele dentro do tatame foram com o Caio Magalhães (hoje no UFC), Helio Mourão e o Thiago Goiabeira”, acrescenta o irmão.

“Ele começou a treinar comigo, depois foi aluno do Ricardo Holanda. Treinou ainda com Manoel Soares, William Couto, Carlos David, e nos últimos cinco anos treina com o Marcio Guilherme ‘Cupim’, na equipe MG”, completou Claudio.

O cearense de olhos castanhos e cabelos pretos por natureza (quando não faz uso de tinta laranja) é o faixa-preta de Jiu-Jitsu novato mais comentado da TV. Na sua cidade, ele sente o carinho da galera na padaria e quando anda pelas ruas. Na manhã da última segunda-feira, no tradicional cafezinho que ele toma, um último mistério pairou no ar. Por que o apelido “Pepey”?

“O apelido Pepey foi minhas irmãs que colocaram na verdade. Ele era um moleque muito danado, ou popularmente falando, muito apimentado! Do nada, elas começaram a chamar de Pepey, Pepey, aí pegou”, relembra o irmão.

Com 1,80m e 66kg, Pepey aguarda seu adversário nas finais do “TUF Brasil”, rival que vai sair do combate entre Hugo Wolverine e o favorito Rony Jason – com quem Pepey, aliás, já lutou com kimono.

The tenth episode of TUF Brazil was chock full of excitement for its viewing audience. Through to the reality show semifinals, Rodrigo Damm of Vitor Belfort’s green team was taken sick and was given medical advice not to compete against blue team’s Godofredo Pepey for a berth in the tournament final. In his place entered former Wanderlei Team member Vinicius Vina, who has represented Vitor’s team since a reshuffle in the second phase.

In the fight, Pepey looked to get the action going on the ground, pulling off a triangle, armbar and deep americana from guard, not to mention a scissor sweep and heelhook attempt, all of which Vina duly defended and responded with punches and kicks.

In the second round, against Pepey insisted in going with the guard attack and sunk another americana. Vina somersaulted to escape, but this time the MG Ceará black belt had the elbow locked down and wrapped up the fight.

“You can see how Pepey does a better job of positioning his body during his second attempt and gets leverage on the elbow. If Vina hadn’t screamed he would have broken his arm—it was at its full extent,” explained black belt Claudio Oliveira, Pepey’s brother and one of those responsible for having taught the fighter his gentle-art skills.

Team captain Wanderlei Silva heaped praise on Pepey for his performance. “Sometimes we judge people without justification. The guy’s a warrior, determined, and you could see that he, like me, came from the bottom; he’s moving up the ranks through grit and hard work. He earned my respect and admiration,” said Wand.

Now, Pepey is waiting for next Sunday to find out who he’ll be facing in the final, to be determined between Rony Jason and Hugo Wolverine.

O décimo capítulo do “TUF Brasil”, exibido ontem pela Rede Globo, reservou muitas emoções para os espectadores. Com as lutas das semifinais programadas, Rodrigo Damm, do time verde de Vitor Belfort, passou mal e foi aconselhado pelos médicos a não disputar a vaga para a final, contra o recém-acolhido pelo time azul Godofredo Pepey. No seu lugar, entrou Vinicius Vina, ex-time azul de Wanderlei Silva, que agora defende a equipe de Vitor após o remajenamento da segunda fase.

Na luta, o cearense Pepey buscou a luta de solo desde o começo, chegando a encaixar o triângulo, o armlock e uma perigosa americana na guarda, além de aplicar uma tesoura e tentar uma chave de calcanhar, todas bem defendidas por Vina, que respondia com socos e chutes.

No segundo round, novamente Pepey insistiu no golpe partindo de dentro da guarda e encaixou outra americana. Vina chegou a capotar e esticar o braço para escapulir, mas desta vez o faixa-preta da equipe MG Ceará foi bem no cotovelo e fez a alavanca para encerrar o duelo.

“Pode reparar que o Pepey ajusta melhor o corpo na segunda tentativa e faz a alavanca embaixo do cotovelo. Se o Vina não grita, ia quebrar o braço, tava esticado”, explica o faixa-preta Claudio Oliveira, irmão de Pepey e um dos primeiros a ensinar as técnicas da arte suave para o lutador.

Quem elogiou o desempenho do cearense foi o capitão Wanderlei Silva. “Às vezes julgamos as pessoas sem saber. O cara é batalhador, esforçado, deu para ver que, como eu, veio do povo, está galgando a posição dele com muita raça e muito suor. Ganhou meu respeito e minha admiração”, afirmou Wand.

Agora, Pepey espera por seu adversário na final, que sairá do duelo entre Rony Jason e Hugo Wolverine, no próximo domingo.
