O Campeonato Europeu de Jiu-Jitsu Sem Kimono 2022 será disputado de 11 a 13 de novembro, em Lácio, na Itália. O torneio conta com nomes consagrados do Jiu-Jitsu, como os veteranos Adam Wardzinski, Claudio Calasans e Fernando Reis, que estão inscritos no adulto, e jovens promissores da nova geração, como Alexandre de Jesus e Darlan Casaca. 

Atletas que estiveram em ação no ADCC 2022 também estão confirmados no Europeu Sem Kimono. Caso do libanês-canadense Oliver Taza e do polonês Mateusz Szczecinski. Atleta da casa e principal expoente da Itália no grappling, Manuel Pilato também disputa a competição.

Campeão absoluto do ADCC 2015 e multicampeão no Jiu-Jitsu, Claudio Calasans, de 39 anos, pretende adicionar mais uma medalha de ouro na coleção. O paulista de São José dos Campos está confirmado na divisão meio-pesado. O campeão mundial se manteve ativo nos últimos meses e conquistou o ouro no sem kimono do Curitiba Spring Open, disputado em outubro, na fase de preparação para o Europeu. 

Calasans, no entanto, terá adversários de alto calibre na categoria. Oliver Taza ganhou projeção no grappling nos últimos anos e é um dos atletas mais ativos da modalidade. O libanês-canadense competiu no ADCC 2022, mas foi superado pelo fenômeno Mica Galvão na fase eliminatória. Em sua apresentação mais recente, Taza foi derrotado por Roberto Jimenez na final do GP dos Médios do Polaris 22, realizado no último fim de semana.

Outro lutador que promete fazer barulho no campeonato é Alexandre Jesus. Aluno de Claudio Calasans, o popular “Robinho” é um dos favoritos entre os meio-pesados. Desde que se tornou faixa-preta, ele conquistou o ouro nos Opens de Londres, Atlanta e Rio de Janeiro, e ficou com o terceiro lugar no Mundial Sem Kimono 2021. 

O peso pesado também promete disputa acirrada pelo ouro. A grande esperança do público italiano está depositada em Manuel Pilato. O italiano atraiu holofotes do grappling ao enfrentar os brasileiros Felipe “Preguiça” Pena e Vagner Rocha no Honnor Submission Challenge, disputado em julho deste ano. Apesar da derrota no torneio, Pilato apresentou transições interessantes no solo e fez o que pôde para resistir à pressão dos brasileiros. Ele possui longa trajetória no wrestling e vai tentar usar as quedas como trunfo para bater os adversários. O americano Devhonte “Bones” Johnson, atleta da Unity Jiu-Jitsu, e o finlandês Santeri Ilius, que competiu no ADCC 2022 e foi campeão da seletiva europeia do torneio, são outros fortes concorrentes ao título.

O polonês Adam Wardzinski está inscrito nas categorias superpesado e absoluto. Dono de uma habilidosa guarda de gancho, Adam adapta seu jogo de kimono ao Nogi e tira proveito da longa envergadura para raspar os adversários. Uma das especialidades de Wardzinski é a guarda-borboleta, que ele utiliza para raspar e fazer ataques no triângulo e armlock. 

Atleta da Alliance, Fernando Reis chega forte na disputa pelo primeiro lugar no superpesado. No retorno às competições da CBJJ após dois anos, Fernando sagrou-se campeão do Brasileiro sem Kimono, realizado em agosto deste ano. Foi o segundo título nacional dele sem pano na faixa-preta. O mineiro apresenta um jogo de quedas bem ajustado e detém uma meia-guarda traiçoeira.

Um dos principais nomes da nova geração no Europeu Sem Kimono 2022 é Darlan Casaca. Atleta da Atos, Darlan está confirmado no peso médio, categoria mais populosa da faixa-preta, com 23 lutadores inscritos. Casaca é conhecido pela explosão e pelo ritmo intenso que costuma imprimir nos combates. Ele esteve em ação nos tatames há menos de um mês, quando participou do GP dos Leves do BJJ Stars 9. Na ocasião, Darlan foi derrotado por Israel Almeida nas quartas de final do torneio. Neste ano, Darlan boletou o ouro no absoluto do Rio Winter Open.

Apesar de não estar no centro dos holofotes do grappling, Mateusz Szczecinski é um dos faixas-pretas mais perigosos no peso médio. Especialista em chaves de pé, Mateusz competiu no ADCC 2022 e foi parado pelo jovem Dante Leon nas quartas de final do torneio. O polonês tem uma guarda perigosa e faz transições consistentes para finalizar os oponentes, especialmente na chave de calcanhar.

With less than two weeks to go until the start of the 2018 Worlds, the Salvador Open marked the final stop on Brazilian soil before the season’s crown jewel. With that, some heavy hitters were present in the state of Bahia to make their final adjustments and secure the points required to compete in California.

The event, held on May 19th, featured world champions and other strong Brazilian competitors. In the women’s section, for example, sitting absolute world champion Tayane Porfírio (Alliance Rio) went two for two as she beat Joaquina Bonfim (Gracie Barra) in the super-heavyweight final and then closed out the absolute with Cláudia do Val (De La Riva).

Cláudio Calasans (Atos) signed up at middleweight and beat that field. In the absolute, Esdras Mendes (Checkmat) dusted himself off following a loss to Diogo Almeida (Almeida JJ) in the super-heavyweight final, and bagged the gold.

Gracie Barra prevailed over the other teams, with 230 points, followed by Nova União (175) and GFTeam (160).

Com menos de duas semanas para o início do Mundial de Jiu-Jitsu 2018, o Salvador Open foi a última parada em solo brasuca antes do maior torneio da modalidade. Com isso, alguns nomes de peso estiveram presentes na Bahia para fazer os últimos ajustes e garantir os pontos que faltavam no ranking e assim garantirem seu lugar para competir na Califórnia.

O evento, realizado no dia 19 de maio, trouxe campeões mundiais e atletas fortes no cenário nacional para disputarem o ouro. No feminino, por exemplo, a atual campeã peso e absoluto do Mundial, Tayane Porfírio (Alliance Rio), mais uma vez mordeu a dobradinha, ao superar Joaquina Bonfim (Gracie Barra) no super pesado e depois ao fechar o absoluto com a também campeã mundial Cláudia Do Val (De La Riva).

Já no masculino, Cláudio Calasans (Atos) se jogou no peso médio e faturou o título. No absoluto, Esdras Mendes (CheckMat), sacudiu a poeira após ficar com a prata no super pesado em revés para Diogo Almeida (Almeida JJ) na final e voltou com tudo no aberto para garantir o ouro.

Por equipes, a Gracie Barra venceu com 230 pontos, seguido pela Nova União, com 175 pontos, e com a GFTeam em terceiro, com 160 pontos.

A BJJ star with titles in the world’s biggest events, André Galvão has become a synonym of tenacity and success on the mats, in and out of the gi.

In an interview given to Graciemag’s print edition after another victory at the ADCC, the Atos leader went over the emotions of fighting for a title in Finland against a childhood friend and teammate, and what he does to activate his “competitor mode.”

Read on for his interview with reporter Marcelo Dunlop. Please note that Galvão speaks of 2017 as the present, as that is when the chat took place.

GRACIEMAG: You became the absolute champion at ADCC England, in 2011, when you beat Rousimar Toquinho, Pablo Popovitch and others. Two years later, promoted to the superfight, you finished Bráulio Estima at ADCC China. In 2015, you took the back of Roberto Cyborg at ADCC São Paulo. Could it be that your superfight this September with Claudio Calasans was the toughest out of this entire globe trot?

ANDRÉ GALVÃO: I believe so. Juninho (that’s what I call Calasans) and I knew since 2015 that we would fight. He’s taken part in every camp here at Atos headquarters in San Diego since 2011. We always train together. He also did the 2016 IBJJF Worlds camp with us. That was the last time we trained together. When 2017 rolled around, we had to get a little separated. We began focusing on this superfight, which was the main goal of both of us for the year. I knew he really wanted this title, and I respected that the entire time. In fact we have always respected each other a lot; our friendship is very healthy, and this fight had no power to change that. We then put bonds of friendship aside and went in search of our dream. We did it all very professionally, and all is well. With respect above all, there was no way for it to go wrong.

How do you prepare for a specific fight for two years? Did you get anxious? Did you spend months studying his game even more thoroughly?

Even though we knew about this fight since ADCC 2015, it’s necessary to take one step at a time. Nobody can stand being focused when there is a 24-month wait. It’s a long period, and there are other missions to accomplish — many things can happen in that time. During that period, I won two IBJJF world titles, in 2016 and 2017, as well as having to work to elevate my team to number one at this year’s Pan and Worlds. But I always keep my focus on upcoming fights. On top of it, I had meniscus surgery last year, in August. So it’s a marathon until fight time. There was all of this planning, but you can’t stay tied to a fight that’s only happening in two years. There is planning, but it begins with a lot of precision about nine weeks before the fight.

Let’s remember your trajectory in superfights. Bráulio, Cyborg and Calasans have completely different games from each other, but you got in there and took the backs of all three. All four, if we count the weight class final with Toquinho in 2011.

True. They all have very different traits. In fact, every fight is a different fight, but I need to keep my jiu-jitsu. I don’t think of changing my style; I just study my opponent and work on the traits of his jiu-jitsu. And team work makes all the difference in the training. What I extracted from the other fights for this superfight with Juninho was the experience gained with each duel. My style is this, and with each passing day, I’m feeling better going to the back. As you guys have been witnessing, I’ve always sought to take the back since the white belt. If you guys look into the Graciemag archives of the 2003 Worlds, when I won the purple belt absolute, you will see that the back-taking comes from way back. [Laughs.]

Have no-gi BJJ and submission wrestling been evolving as fast as classical BJJ?

Yes, a lot has been changing; jiu-jitsu, in general, is changing at a fast pace. I believe that despite being a thousand-year-old art, the sport with its current rules is still very young. The first Worlds was in 1996; the first ADCC, in 1998. We are living a phase of evolution, for sure. The evolution in classical is more perceptible and talked about, because there are world championships every year. But the evolution in the ADCC happens every other year, and it also exists. I notice a big change in the takedown side of things, in the leg attacks, heel locks and leg locks. At ADCC 2011, I invested a great deal in wrestling, and I think many people realized that it was necessary to take takedowns seriously to win there. Another aspect that has evolved is fighters’ physical capacity. Nowadays, there are more methodologies of training, of physical preparation. If we compare it to the 2003 ADCC, it’s been a huge leap.

What is your routine like on competition days?

On the day of a fight, I strive to go into total focus, and nothing can take my attention away. I try to get motivated from myself, thinking about all I’ve gone through to get that far. And then comes the transformation from Galvão into gorilla! And it comes early, as soon as I wake up. I try to keep myself not just motivated; I go a little beyond: the feeling is one of being very happy with the moment and with everything around. Many things can happen during the day to take away my focus, but I prepare mentally so that nothing can take my attention away from the target. I also strive to think about the promises that God made to me through his word. That motivates me a lot and gives me a lot of confidence. Lastly, I have a good breakfast and rest right up until fight time, because that is very important. And then, when it’s show time, it’s all about letting the gorilla loose until the end of the fight! [Laughs.]

How did it feel to be face to face with Calasans?

They called me out first, and I came out. Then he came out. Then he took off his coat, and when I looked at him, I thought, “Crap, I’m fighting this white gorilla. Let’s go!” [Laughs.] The fight began, and I sought to get a feel for the fight at first; I tried to read his body language to know what was going through his mind. I started setting the pace, and I felt that in the first four minutes, he started to get a little tired, maybe due to the psychological pressure, or for the physiologic factor. I then kept up the pace; I took him down while there were still no points in play, just to feel it. Then, when the points kicked in, I gradually cranked up my pace. Time was passing and I was getting better, and he was getting worn out. Until the time when I had the opportunity to take the back. I tried to sub him, but I think I could have adjusted better the rear naked choke and the kata-gatame as well, when I mounted. We got up again, and I kept imposing my rhythm the entire time — there were three minutes left, and I was already leading by 14-0. When the final minute started, I began accelerating more. At this time, we started talking to each other, and I don’t want to share this here, because I don’t remember what was said very well — I don’t want to say here something we didn’t say, or add something due to a faulty memory. But we just talked. Then it was all over! I won and I celebrated intensely. After everything, when we were leaving, we talked at the parking lot, and all was well.

Got any message for Calasans now that the emotion has settled down?

Dude, Juninho is a guy I love and for whom I always wish the best, because I know how much of a warrior and a hard worker he is. He is a true athlete and a great example of a champion. He may be the humblest champion I’ve met to this day.

And what about the Sunday following your bout? You just watched and cheered like an emperor at the Coliseum. What did you learn?

Yeah, I saw the guys killing each other. [Laughs.] ADCC Sundays are sensational, because you get to see the condition of all the great champions at the championship up until the finals. I was pretty confident in my students, because we had trained a lot. Keenan Cornelius, for example, who came in second at 88kg, has a very special game. He is like software that is updating itself all the time. It’s all very modern and calculated, and beautiful to see. From what I watched in Finland, I thought that many guys from this new BJJ crop have been bringing a forward-facing, intelligent game. The intelligence comes through the excess of information that they have these days, like easy Internet access, videos, books, Google, etc. This makes athletes more learned, with a much faster capacity for absorption and learning than in previous eras.

We talked about physical preparation, and we saw that many fighters arrived exhausted in the final stretch of the tourney. With this trait of putting the absolute division last, is the ADCC like the Ironman Triathlon of BJJ?

I believe he who is better prepared wins — there’s no such thing as luck. But the event isn’t that much more exhausting than other events in the gi. There’s none of that Ironman business — but, indeed, it’s another type of fighting. What really changes is the fact that you don’t have the cloth to control your rivals with. If you analyze it, those who were better prepared and focused on the ADCC’s rules won. Gordon Ryan and Felipe Pena really were the best prepared there. They were the guys who had focus in their training. I didn’t see either of them competing close to the ADCC. Felipe fought at the Worlds, and then just no-gi after that. Gordon was focused for two years to be there, and he would always mention the ADCC during interviews. They were the guys who showed no sign of fatigue, who didn’t get lost with the rules — that’s why they arrived in the most important final of the competition. It’s all focus, and knowing what your priority is. I thought that many athletes there, including renowned athletes in the BJJ world who didn’t give the ADCC 100% of their focus, got tired or lost in the rules during the event.

What is this battle in 2019 going to be like, between you and Preguiça? Who is taking whose back?

Look, after Preguiça won, I was happy for him. Now it’s all about preparing myself to do battle against another absolute ADCC champion. I’m super-happy at the moment, and at the time I wasn’t even thinking too much about how it was going to be — after all, a lot can happen until then. I know I will be older, around 37, but since I’m healthy, I believe I will get there in good shape, and with more experience. And we may even meet before that, in the gi. If a promoter wants to see this fight in no-gi, I believe they’ll have to fill our pockets, right? [Laughs.]

To wrap up, I’d like to thank my entire family — my wife, my daughter, my brother-in-law and my nieces, who are here with me in California helping me a bunch. I’d like to thank all my employees, my instructors and my students, who have helped me a lot. And my fans, who always send wonderful messages, and God, for giving me health and peace. He has guided me here.

New heavyweight Leandro Lo advances to the final

The Multiusos Pavilion in Odivelas, Portugal was shaken this Saturday by the first black belt matches of the European Championship — more specifically the men’s and women’s open divisions.

Leandro Lo, Lúcio Lagarto, Cláudio Calasans, Márcio André, Isaque Bahiense, Mahamed Aly, Rodrigo Caporal and Nathan Medelson were among the men in the running, but only two will go through to tomorrow’s final.

It was Lo and Calasans that made it past the 36 other competitors. To get to the final on his side, Lo beat four athletes, including Mahamed Aly and Isaque Bahiense. Calasans also beat four, including Manuel Ribamar in a semifinal and Gustavo Elias in a quarterfinal.

Fourteen athletes entered the women’s open. The final tomorrow will pit Beatriz Mesquita — who beat Karolina Zawodnik and Cláudia do Val — against Tayane Porfírio — who defeated Mackenzie Dern after getting past Priscila Cerqueira.

Agora no peso pesado, LEandro Lo avança à final do Europeu.

O Pavilhão Multiusos de Odivelas, em Portugal, ferveu neste sábado, dia 21, com as primeiras lutas de faixa-preta do Europeu de Jiu-Jitsu, mais precisamente com as disputas do aguardado absoluto, tanto no masculino quanto no feminino.

Entre os homens, nomes como Leandro Lo, Lúcio Lagarto, Cláudio Calasans, Márcio André, Isaque Bahiense, Mahamed Aly, Rodrigo Caporal e Nathan Medelson estiveram na disputa, mas apenas dois destes, dentre outros, estariam na finalíssima que rola amanhã.

Os guerreiros que superaram as chaves, com 36 competidores no total, foram Leandro Lo e Cláudio Calasans. Para chegar na final pelo seu lado, Lo venceu quatro lutas, e bateu feras como Mahamed Aly e Isaque Bahiense pelo caminho. Calasans, por sua vez, também encarou quatro duelos, e venceu Manuel Ribamar na semi e Gustavo Elias nas quartas para se credenciar à final contra Lo no domingo.

Entre as mulheres, 14 cascas-grossas entraram no páreo. Na final, teremos Beatriz Mesquita, que venceu Karolina Zawodnik e Cláudia do Val para chegar na luta de domingo no absoluto, e Tayane Porfírio, que bateu Mackenzie Dern na semifinal, e antes venceu Priscila Cerqueira.

World / ADCC champions Mackenzie Dern and Cláudio Calasans were the big names at the 2016 IBJJF Asian Jiu-Jitsu Championship, an event held last weekend at the Tokyo Budo-Kan, in the Japanese capital. Calasans was victorious at medium heavyweight, beating Charles Cobrinha pupil Alec Baulding in the final. In the open division, the Atos Jiu-Jitsu black-belt defeated Leandro Kussano (Over Limit BJJ) to take gold.

Mackenzie Dern was invincible in the women’s competition. After bagging the lightweight title, the Gracie Humaitá black-belt outplayed Isabelle de Souza (Impacto Japan BJJ), who had won the middleweight class, to become the absolute champion.

Rodrigo Caporal’s lightweight triumph is also noteworthy. The Atos black-belt bested Masahiro Iwasaki (Carpe Diem) in the final. At middleweight, Worlds runner-up Roberto Satoshi came out on top as he beat Rodrigo Teixeira (GFTeam).

Atos Jiu-Jitsu ended up with the teams’ gold. The André Galvão-led team placed first in both the men’s and women’s competitions.

A terra do sol nascente recebeu nos dias 10 e 11 de setembro uma edição do Open da IBJJF. Grandes feras do Jiu-Jitsu japonês, e nomes brasileiro de alto calibre, estiveram presentes no Asiático de Jiu-Jitsu, e o torneio contou com alto nível dos competidores.

Nome da vez, nosso GMI Claudio Calasans não brincou em serviço e faturou duplo ouro na disputa. No peso meio-pesado, o faixa-preta da Atos desbancou Alec Baulding (Alliance) pelo título. Já no aberto, o atual campeão absoluto do ADCC venceu Leandro Sousa (Over Limit BJJ) e garantiu o ouro.

Outros destaques no masculino ficaram para Rodrigo Caporal (Atos), que venceu Masahiro Iwasaki (Carpe Diem) pelo ouro no leve, e Roberto Satoshi (Atos), que superou Rodrigo Teixeira (GFTeam) na final dos médios.

Entre as mulheres, Mackenzie Dern fez bonito mais uma vez. Sem adversária no peso-pena, a filha de Megaton faturou o ouro na categoria e mordeu o ouro absoluto ao bater  Isabelle de Souza (Impacto Japan BJJ). Confira os resultados da faixa-preta abaixo!

Claudio Calasans Jr. has reached the highest levels of achievement in Jiu-Jitsu thanks to a lot of hard work to take advantage of his natural born talent.

The 2015 middleweight world champion and ADCC open class champion has a lot to teach to those starting out their Jiu-Jitsu life.

We have highlighted 10 tips he was kind enough to share with us.

1. In Jiu-Jitsu, you won’t be surprised by your opponent if you train more than them.

2. The more hours at the gym, the greater your chances of surprising your rival. Go train!

3. Go to Jiu-Jitsu championships to learn new moves. Whenever I watched competitions, I’d always go back home wanting to repeat some position and test it in my game.

4. Whenever you learn a new position at the gym, persist until you get it right in the rolls. Only against a colleague will you be sure of whether it fits your fighting style.

5. Training is risking. If you go to the gym and just do the very same positions both on top and on the bottom, you are reducing the speed of your evolution.

6. When the position doesn’t work very well, don’t simply discard it. Reflect on it, study, analyze, and unravel the position. See if you are able to adapt it before deciding that no, actually it doesn’t fit in your game.

7. Be complete. Standing, on top, on the bottom. But fight with a plan, drawn in accordance with the strong qualities of your opponent.

8. You don’t compete against other fighters, but against yourself.

9. At every training session, every competition, try to test your limits – physical, technical, mental. At each limit crossed, use that as an incentive to train more and more, and develop your Jiu-Jitsu constantly.

10. Every sport grows at a pace directly proportional to the emergence of good role models, good athletes, and good people. Be a martial artist useful for the rest of society. By becoming a good example, you help the sport grow.
