O terceiro dia do 13º Abu Dhabi World Pro Jiu-Jitsu Championship foi inteiramente dedicado aos Masters. Atletas de todo o mundo se reuniram nesta terça-feira, dia 16 de novembro, para testar suas habilidades nos tatames.

Os faixas-marrons e pretas deram tudo de si em busca da glória final. A faixa-preta master 1 foi o destaque do dia. Veja como foi a final de cada categoria de peso.

Masculino

56kg – Em quatro lutas, Luiz Ribeiro manteve total controle da chave e saiu vitorioso em todos os confrontos. Ele venceu Jorge Nakamura por 3-0, Marko Oikarainen por 7-2, Justin Ordinario por 1-0 e, finalmente, Andrea Verdemare por 2-1.

62kg – Em três lutas, o sul-coreano Wanki Chae foi perfeito. Primeiro, ele finalizou Esmaeel Alfailakawi e Mani Tavanaei. Na final, Wanki conseguiu uma vantagem de 2 a 1 sobre o brasileiro Gabriel Moraes.

69kg – Caminho difícil para o campeão Leo Saggioro. Ele lutou quatro vezes para garantir a medalha dourada. Saggioro finalizou Lyndon Quindipan, derrotou Darragh O’Conaill por 5-0 e Osvaldo Moizinho por 2-0. Na final, Leo finalizou o peruano Gustavo Carpio pelo ouro.

77kg – Quatro lutas rumo à medalha de ouro. Esse foi o caminho de Adriano para o título. Primeiro, ele derrotou o israelense David Zaken por 1-0, depois o português Delcio Santos por 9-0. A semifinal foi contra Rafael Carvalho e o duelo terminou com uma vantagem de 8-4. A disputa pela medalha de ouro contra Jacob Mackenzie foi difícil, decidida apenas por decisão dos árbitros após o placar de 0 a 0.

85kg – Ninguém conseguiu parar Claudio Calasans Jr. De seus três duelos, ele venceu Nathan dos Santos por 3 a 0 e Sergio Rios por 5 a 2. A luta pela medalha de ouro foi contra o espanhol Arturo Salas. Um placar de 4-2 foi o suficiente para Calasans comemorar o título.

94kg – Duas lutas pela medalha de ouro. Para alcançar seu objetivo, Renato Cardoso primeiro finalizou Maksymilian Wisniewski. Na final, Cardoso enfrentou o sueco-brasileiro Alan do Nascimento. Em uma luta complicada, Cardoso conseguiu construir uma vantagem de 5-2 para garantir o título.

120kg – Igor Silva lutou quatro vezes até alcançar a medalha de ouro. Na fase de grupos, perdeu para Felipe Bezerra, mas conseguiu se classificar para as semifinais. Depois de vencer Khasan Varando por 2 a 0, Silva voltou a se encontrar com Bezerra na final. Depois de um empate por 3-3, Igor levou o título para casa por decisão dos árbitros.

49kg – A italiana Serena Gabrieli fez uma campanha perfeita rumo à medalha de ouro. Venceu Tatiane Nunes por 10-1, Emilie Neto por 8-0 e finalizou Vanderlucia Barbosa.

55kg – Quatro lutas e quatro vitórias em uma campanha de ouro da atleta Ariadne de Oliveira. Após finalizar Liisi Vaht, Clarissa Lacerda e Deborah Gautier, Ariadne superou Rafaela Rosa por 2 a 1.

62kg – Marina Ribeiro não deu chance aos adversários. Ela venceu Deborah Costa por 15-0 para chegar às semifinais. Depois, ela derrotou a russa Oksana Bench. A medalha de ouro veio através de um armlock encaixado na adversária Deborah Costa.

70kg – Medalha de ouro para a Mongólia. Em três lutas, Buyandelger Battsogt chegou ao topo. Ela venceu a italiana Gabriella Ripepi por 5 a 0 e chegou às semifinais. A vaga na final veio após uma vantagem de 1 a 0 sobre a brasileira Priscilla Assunção. Na disputa pela medalha de ouro, Buyandelger superou novamentre Gabriella, desta vez por 5 a 0, para comemorar o título.

Claudio Calasans Jr was the standout at the 2014 Asian Open, held this weekend, in Nagoya.

The Brazilian black belt, who is also a judo black belt, felt right at home in Japan and took double gold in the medium-heavy and the open class divisions.

The absolute final was against ultra-heavy champion Abraham Marte.

One of the most exciting moments of the recent World Jiu-Jitsu Expo was the superfight between Vitor Shaolin and Nino Schembri.

A classic match between two of the most important competitors in Jiu-Jitsu history.

Bernardo Faria vs. Luiz Panza

Osvaldo Moizinho, Vitor Oliveira, Keenan Cornelius and Bernardo Faria are the 2014 BJJ Pro League champions.

In the featherweight division, Osvaldo Moizinho first had a great showing against Ivaniel Oliveira.

After taking Oliveira’s back, he went for the lapel and got the choke to advance to the final.

His opponent would be Paulo Miyao, who didn’t get the submission, but put his berimbolo to work to defeat Koji Shibamoto 14-2.

The final match was a nervous one and decided in the last seconds.

After a exchange of sweeps and sweep attempts, Moizinho got a last-second inversion to tie the score 8(3)-8(3).

The win came in the way of unanimous decision by the three referees in favor of Moizinho.

In the middleweight division, a unexpected result right in the first match.

Two-time world champion Otavio Sousa was surprised by Francisco Iturralde’s strategy of pulling guard first and ended up being swept with only one minute left in the clock.

Sousa put his efficient guard game to work and managed a sweep, but time ran out before he could stabilize the position, costing him a 2-0 defeat.

In the other semifinal, Vitor Oliveira had a tough match with Claudio Calasans Jr and won 2-1 on advantages with two near guard passes.

The final was similar to Iturralde’s first match and the Ecuadorian pulled guard and managed a sweep to go ahead in the scoreboard.

Vitor battled from the bottom and in the last moments was able to come on top and get the mount to turn the score to 4-2 for the trophy.

In the heavyweight division, Keenan Cornelius was all about business.

The American black belt was not seen in the World Jiu-Jitsu Expo all weekend and appeared only to compete in the BJJ Pro League.

The first semifinal involved Jackson Sousa and Yuri Simões replacement, Eduardo Telles.

Sousa battled Telles’ famous turtle guard and won 4-1 on advantages after a 2-2 tie in points.

Cornelius had his first match against Roberto Alencar and was able to impose his game to win 12-0.

The final put old rivals face to face again and was decided by details.

Keenan used his notorious worm guard but couldn’t get ahead on the scoreboard.

In the end, two out of three referees decided that Keenan was the winner.

The Checkmat crowd complained that Cornelius should have been punished for an ilegal grip to Sousa’s pants.

In the ultraheavy division, Bernardo Faria put his A game to work and debuted with a triangle choke against Gustavo Pires.

In the other semifinal, Luiz Panza started out working his guard against Ricardo Evangelista and winning by armbar.

The final was a rematch of the 2014 Pan, when Panza was able to finish Faria with an armbar.

Faria gave no second chance to Panza’s dangerous game and choked from the back for the gold medal.

Vitor Shaolin takes Nono Schembri down at the 2014 World Jiu-Jitsu Expo

Day 1 of the 2014 World Jiu-Jitsu Expo was dedicated first to kids and then to the superfights.

In the children competition, Mendes Bros’ Art of Jitsu Academy took first place, with Gracie Barra second and Checkmat in third place.

After that and while many idols taught seminars or took part in other activities, the central mat was reserved for the superfights.

First, Alexandre Pulga outsocred Zach Maxwell 4-2 with two sweeps against one.

The second superfight ended fast with Ricardo Resende catching Danilo Indio with a triangle/armbar in 2:09.

Tim Spriggs stepped on the gas pedal in his fight against Leo Nogueira and with two guard passes and a knee on the belly won with a 10-2 score.

Bruno Frazzato defeated AJ Agazarm 3-0 on advantages in the forth superfight of the evening.

The fifth match ended with a referees decision in favor of Augusto Mendes against Gianni Grippo after a 0-0 tie.

The co-main event of the night was the firsth throwback match of the card, between Robson Moura and Marcos Parrumpinha.

Robinho put his well-known game to work and went from the guard to Parrumpinha’s back and finished the fight with a clock choke.

The main event of the superfights card was a classic match up between Vitor Shaolin against Nino Schembri.

With his judo up to date, Shaolin managed to take Nino down three times and also sweep one time to win 8-0.

The World Jiu-Jitsu Expo continues this Sunday with the BJJ Pro League, Long Beach Open and more seminars.

Marcelo Garcia’s black belt Gianni Grippo will be facing 2013 featherweight world champion Augusto Tanquinho.

The IBJJF has released the brackets for the 2014 BJJ Pro League.

The event will consist of four weight divisions with four competitors each.

Each division champion will get a prize of $5K and the second place will get $1K.

The event takes place at the World Jiu-Jitsu Expo, on October 19, in Long Beach.

The two are getting ready for the third match up between the two and the score now is 1-1, so it’s for the tie breaker.

GRACIEMAG.com talked to the the two about the match.

Chantre talks about what motivated him to accept the fight against Yoshida: “Besides the fact that he is a world champion (no-gi) and that he was part of many prestigious events in his career, our personal score is 1-1. He beat me in the 2009 Worlds No-Gi, when I was a black belt for only three months. It was a defeat that mattered a lot to me. Then, I was able to defeat him at the American Nationals one year later and I want to take the lead now.”

Yoshida was very candid when talking about why he accepted the fight:”My main motivation is that I’m getting paid to fight, and I can use the money”.

When asked about the main qualities of their opponents, Samir highlighted Yoshida’s skills: “He is very experienced and besides that he is very flexible and have very sharp attacks. It’s gonna be a fight where you can’t loose your focus even for a second.”

Yoshida looked back into their past matches to praise Chantre: “He is a very skilled fighter.”

In closing, the two say why they think they are going to win the match.

“I think I evolved a lot as an athlete in the recent years and gained a lot of experience. In my opinion, that was what I lacked in our first fight in 2009. I’m in a very good training routine and God willing I’ll win and get ahead in our personal record.”

Yoshida believes that his prior experience will help him: “We fought before, so I know his game and that will help me to win.”
