1^st – Gabrielle Lemos Garcia – 1066.5 pts

Gabi Garcia is no stranger to the IBJJF rankings. After securing double gold once again in her division and the absolute at Pans 2013, she moved herself even further apart from the other females. A seven time world champion, she has been unstoppable. Her ability to place pressure on her opponents gives her a level that so far, no one has been able to strategize. Her mentor Fabio Gurgel and the Alliance team in Sao Paulo, Brazil have supported her endeavors and victories across the globe and she will continue to rule the rankings with that guidance.

2^nd – Luanna Alzuguir Marton Moraes – 732 pts

Luanna Alzuguir

Luanna Alzuguir has been the partner of teammate Gabi Garcia, often closing out the open weight divisions at the most prestigious tournaments over the years. A light weight until moving to middle in 2012, she has conquered every major tournament: Pan American Championship, World Championship and ADCC to name a few. Her ability to win against nearly every type of opponent and do well in the light weight despite being at a smaller weight level, has contributed to her overall ranking score. Even though she was absent from the 2013 Pans, her double gold in the 2013 Europeans allowed her to maintain a nice lead over the other ladies.

3rd – Michelle Zonato Nicolini – 652.5 pts

Michelle Nicolini

Michelle Nicolini was another top black belt absent from the Pans but her double silver in the 2013 Europeans allowed her to maintain in the top rankings. In an unfortunate event in the semi-finals of the Lisbon, Portugal tournament she suffered an injury and we did not see her this past weekend. Her most known talent is her flexible and aggressive spider guard techniques, however she has proven skills from every position. A Checkmat team member, she fluctuates in weight classes but also does well in the opens as she won the open division at the 2007 World Championship which contributed to her total of six world titles. With a recent move to MMA, we hope to see her back in Jiu-Jitsu tournaments soon.

4th – Luiza Monteiro Moura da Costa – 447 pts

Luiza Monteiro

Having only started competing as a black belt in 2011, Luiza Monteiro has managed to rise up the ranks rather quickly. First coming onto the scene after winning at no-gi worlds as a purple belt in 2009 then repeating the performance in 2009 at the same tournament in the brown/black division. She made a move to the Cicero Costa team in 2011 and has since found much success. Her wins at the World Championship and the Pans have secured her spot. Winning the final of the featherweight division at the 2013 Pans against Mackenzie Dern gave her the gold medal and raised her name into the top five of the IBJJF rankings in the process.

5th – Marina Soares de Araujo Ribeiro – 348 pts

A member of the Checkmat team, Marina Ribeiro was another who was absent from the 2013 Pans but was still able to maintain within the top of the rankings list. She received her black belt from Ricardo Vieira in only four years and has proven her promotion many times in competition. Placing second in the feather weight division after competing in the final against fellow Checkmat member Michelle Nicolini and beating legend Kyra Gracie on the way gave her a more known name. She showed at the 2013 Europeans in January and placed third in the open after defaulting gold in her weight division earning her enough points to secure the fifth spot.

Current Jiu-Jitsu world champion Leandro Lo is one of the big names venturing into the lightweight division at this weekend’s Brazilian No-Gi Nationals 2012. And GRACIEMAG.com will be there at the Tijuca Tennis Club in Rio de Janeiro to bring you all the news.

Lo took a moment out of his frenetic training schedule to have a quick chat with GRACIEMAG.com, revealing to us his plans for 2013, as well as the hard time he has been having in his battle with the scale. Check out what he had to say:

Gi vs. No-Gi

“I feel it’s really different fighting without the gi. I’m not as comfortable as when I do Jiu-Jitsu in the gi. So I got some major help in preparing for the Brazilian No-Gi Nationals, and the November No-Gi Worlds in California. I did a lot of training with Murilo Santana, who’s won the No-Gi absolute in Tijuca before, and he helped me a lot. We’ll see how I do now at the Brazilian Nationals and next month’s No-Gi Worlds.”

Battle with the scale

“It’s hard making it down to lightweight, but the good part is that I feel good fighting at middleweight. I like fighting at middleweight so much I even felt good at the Copa Pódio Middleweight GP. Still I feel I didn’t fight that well. Even so, I managed to win, thank God. For those reasons, I intend to fight at middleweight next year.”

Future challenges

“On December 8 there’s the IBJJ Pro in Long Beach, and that’s going to be a really cool championship. Only the top ranked in the IBJJF standings will get to compete, and there will be fewer weight divisions, so the lightweights and featherweights will compete against each other. That will be a challenge but also a pleasure, since there are some really tough guys at featherweight who I’d like to fight, like Rubens Cobrinha, Bruno Frazatto and Rafael Mendes, who is a really good and strategic fighter. I really want to compete against those guys.”

Copa Pódio

“After that, on January 13 there’s Copa Pódio, and I should be at middleweight once again. I’m going to do a supermatch with Felipe Preguiça, who’s really good. I’m going to have to be really well prepared for that match.”

Pano vs Sem Pano

“Acho muito diferente lutar sem pano, não fico tão confortável quanto lutar Jiu-Jitsu, com kimono. Contei então com uma grande ajuda para me preparar o Brasileiro Sem Kimono e depois para o Mundial Sem Kimono, em novembro na Califa. Treinei muito com o Murilo Santana, que já foi campeão absoluto sem pano no Tijuca, e ele me ajudou muito. Vamos ver como vou me sair agora no Brasileiro e mês que vem no Mundial Sem Kimono”.

Briga com a balança

“Está duro descer para os leves, e o lado bom disso é que me sinto bem lutando no peso médio. Eu gosto de lutar como médio, inclusive eu me senti muito bem no GP dos Médios da Copa Pódio. Porém, acho que não lutei bem. Ainda assim, consegui ganhar, graças a Deus. Por tudo isso, ano que vem pretendo lutar de médio”.

Futuros desafios

“No dia 8 de dezembro tem o IBJJ Pro, em Long Beach, e esse campeonato será muito legal. Vão lutar só os mais bem classificados no novo ranking da IBJJF, e serão menos categorias, então os pesos leves e penas competem juntos. Isso será um desafio mas também um prazer, pois tem uns caras muito duros do peso-pena com quem eu gostaria de lutar, como o Rubens Cobrinha, Bruno Frazatto e Rafael Mendes, que é um cara muito bom e estratégico. Gostaria muito de lutar com eles”.

Copa Pódio

“Depois, no dia 13 de janeiro, tem a Copa Pódio, e já devo ficar de vez no peso médio. Vou fazer uma superluta com o Felipe Preguiça, que é um cara muito bom. Vou precisar estar muito bem preparado e treinado para esta luta”

Gabriel Vella fez uma luta bonita para os olhos de seu público, em São Paulo, nesse fim de semana. O bicampeão mundial de Jiu-Jitsu não se limitou a fazer as vezes de organizador do Festival de Jiu-Jitsu no Esporte Clube Pinheiros, e vestiu o paletó para uma luta casada emocionante, no domingo.

Seu oponente foi um companheiro da equipe Ryan Gracie, o faixa-preta Rodrigo Favalli, que no ano passado sofreu um acidente de motocicleta que o deixou de coma por uma semana. Provando a força do Jiu-Jitsu, Rodrigo voltou a viver, e a treinar. Vella não aliviou, montando e estrangulando o parceiro, para delírio do público num apinhado clube Pinheiros.

“Esta luta foi uma expressão de gratidão ao meu grande amigo das antigas, que nasceu de novo depois do acidente. E os médicos diziam que ele nunca voltaria a lutar”, disse o campeão.

“Por trás desta festa do Jiu-Jitsu existe um trabalho de muitos resultados positivos, que dizem respeito a atributos emocionais e físicos da prática da arte suave. Devido a esses resultados, o Esporte Clube Pinheiros confiou na gente para realizarmos juntos este festival para seus associados e para esportistas de São Paulo. Foi bom, principalmente, para o Jiu-Jitsu”, lembrou Vella, que dá aulas no clube.

“Com um relizador como o Pinheiros e um patrocinador do porte da Gatorade, conseguimos organizar uma competição baseada na Vella Metodologia, onde os atletas e torcedores são o centro das atenções. Aqui nos preocupamos em ter uma estrutura com vestiários impecavelmente limpos, frutas para os competidores e água e Gatorade à vontade para o público presente. Oferecemos também um atendimento preferencial para idosos, gestantes e portadores de deficiência”, contou Gabriel.

O campeonato ainda revelou futuros craques, como os irmãos Myiau, dois japoneses levinhos e enfezados alunos de Cícero Costa (Equipe Barbosa). O faixa-azul e o faixa-roxa dividiram o prêmio de revelação, com destaque para o roxa Paulo Miyau, que venceu todos os grandões no absoluto, no sábado.

No domingo, o dia foi de lutas casadas, com Caio Almeida (Ryan) vencendo Anderson Camara (Kihon) por finalização, Gabriel Rocha (Cia Paulista) vencendo Everaldo “Osso” Rocha (Pinheiros).
